13 Thanks, Pixy. Hope all is well. Speaking of AI, I just spent a little time cruising the interwebs to see what was up in the sportsball world. The articles for the most part are somewhat alarming. To me, many of them are obviously AI generated, or at least AI assisted. Poor grammar, inconsistency and repetitive in content. I have been observing this more frequently. Kind of surreal.

Our local rag is total leftard trash & has been for many years. Don't know how it stays in business.

During the o'bummer years, they had some old guy hawking that rag at the entrances to various retail stores-- handing out free papers & trying to get subscribers. LOL. Most of those stores are closed now, thanks to the policies embraced by said paper.

But still they publish.

Would've thought they'd go under, long before now.

I always simply chalked that up to lower education standards.

Specially in the Baltimore area reporting.

Remember when the big story of the day was the false narrative that Border Patrol was chasing down and whipping Haitians at our undefended southern border?

24 Evening and morning to all the far-flung outposts of the AoSHQ Empire! 'Tis Thursday, and I am here to tell the tale of Hurricane Francine.

Short version: kind of a bust, for me.

Long version: I'm extremely glad not to have lost power, and to have two days off from work. A drip from my living room ceiling into a bucket on the dinette table, and a small leak that appeared on my kitchen floor last evening and which I've mopped up and dammed with a towel, are about the only issues. Nothing new -- this has happened many times over the years I've been incarcerated here.

If any of you were, or are, in it, how did you do?

55 for kids who have trouble writing a first draft college essay, it helps in organizing notes and ideas into paragraphs the kid can use as a starting point

-

The problem is "organizing notes and ideas" can very easily be "please write a five page book report in the style of an American 11th grader on the importance of trade routes in the American revolution. Please include multiple paragraphs discussing England, France, Spain, and Portugal separately."

I just made that up for this example. I can't link the ChatGPT output, but here's part of the conclusion:

"Trade routes were of paramount importance during the American Revolution. The British attempts to control and disrupt colonial trade highlighted the critical role of maritime routes in the conflict. France’s support through its trade routes and naval power significantly impacted the outcome of the war, while Spain’s contributions through its own routes helped sustain the American effort...."

I think the only solution will be something solid and unforgiving, like if you're found to be using ChatGPT in that setting you're expelled from school and cannot re-apply to it or any other for five years.

True. I grew up in the French Quarter before it became a giant T-shirt shop, and the French/Spanish style is distinctive. I'm sick to death of shotgun houses, though.

Santa Fe, NM, also has a distinctive style -- similar in some ways -- and yet residents don't have to worry about floods and hurricanes. (Lack of water, maybe, but not hurricanes.)

Of course, lazy kids will always exist. But as a general statement this technology can often help.

Are tech-based tools all bad to use, or do you make exceptions to your blanket condemnation? Should kids not use graphing calculators? Are word processors evil? Of course not. The issue with ChatGPT, just to use the example you cited, is that relying solely on the first draft output creates lifeless writing with often inaccurate statements. But it helps kids get started. It is a tool, like a calculator or Excel or Word. Will lazy kids turn in essay output and not work at writing? Of course, but idiots have always been a problem.

67 Mark Steyn says Dick Cheney endorsing Que Mala is very helpful. To GOP voters who have resisted the idea of a uniparty, especially one with a defense-industrial priority, Steyn says now it is so obvious it cannot be ignored. In other words, Cheney is helping Trump make his case:

So Trump has performed a great service in driving the likes of Cheney to vote Kamala. The feeble charade of TweedleDem vs TweedleRep is designed to obscure the central fact of end-stage western “democracy” – that, on anything that really matters, nothing can be permitted to change. Thus, having Dick Cheney and Ilhan Omar formally on the same team is very helpful.

We have math and writing so that students no longer need to put any real effort into anything if they don't have a moral basis or long-term vision (from their parents) for how it will harm them. 81 We're dumping an entire generation of kids into an experiment with no idea of how it will turn out for them (spoiler alert: badly), same as handing them all cell phones.

Agreed and I am far from a Luddite, having been in the tech industry for most of my working life.

83 77: well, the river on fire thing happened in the 60s. There isn't any industry left to cause that now.

84 Grit TV has started running the old Zorro TV series with Guy Williams at 11:00 my time. I may settle down and watch to see if it's half as good as I thought when I was nine.

85 Re: Zorro, Wiki says, "For most of its run, Zorro's episodes were part of continuing story arcs, each about thirteen episodes long. It had a structure similar to a serial." Now that sounds intriguing and very modern.

87 Puddleglum, I travel that way a lot. Just go a little further west, and take 219 just past Blairsville. It will bring you to 422 west. Probably the most direct without going into Greensburg.

88 I still argue that chained AI models are how we're going to get to small team movie making.

Basically use generative AI to cook up base character models, use another to rig it, use another to animate the rigged model, and another to voice the lines, and so on to build a tool chain that can replace most of the actors and repetitive animation steps involved, to the point that a small group can put together what used to take all of Pixar to build.

89 To the last article, current "AI" is actually very good at doing the same thing current "journalists" do: rearranging and regurgitating existing content with the vague appearance of knowing what you're talking about (but no need to actually know). Between them and no-talent "artists", it's ironic that the people most likely to be put out of work by AI are the ones most likely to be gleeful at the erroneous idea of it taking over blue-collar jobs.
