Now I hear this and think about the search for ball lightning. Now ball lightning is probably a real thing but finding cases where people have actually caught video of it has proved elusive.
I'm not sure if ball lightning is real or not. There are lots of fake video online, but I can't find one that people agree is real. That said, what the CIA dude describes isn't ball lighting. Ball lightning doesn't pass through walls without leaving marks. A ball of plasma coming in contact with the walls of a home would leave a scorch mark or burn hole. Of course, this assumes that ball lighting is real and it would be a ball of plasma. If it's something else, maybe it could float through a wall and leave it undamaged.

Most states have felony murder. Problem is extending that to otherwise lawful conduct which is not intended to be part of "the plan."
I hate to be defending this guy - and I am on record as saying it was monumentally stupid, and perhaps tortious* - but if he did not believe his son made credible threats (which the police couldn't prove at the time), then how could he be a participant under felony murder statutes.
That's the problem with extending such under public clamor for punishment.
*Also supported that, if there is specific statute (such as locked firearm statutes, etc.) to be prosecuted under, then fair game. But it should not be a mob rule charge him with anything like the BLM prosecution of Floyd's arrest.

One thing that everyone brings up is how many people have to know about a conspiracy in government, as a reason to argue that such conspiracies don't exist.
The answer all begins with the fact that governments have actual secrets they have to protect from actual enemies. As a result everything about a government has to be set up to protect secrets. It is a very short step to use that protective structure to protect government from their own population.
As a result one thing any government is VERY good at doing is keeping secrets from their own citizens. They can hide behind "on going investigation" and "national security" for almost any question they don't want to answer. In addition they can threaten potential whistle blowers with criminal prosecution, jail time, and loss of salary and pension for disclosing things the government calls either of those two categories.

A lot of people want to knee-jerk or claim moral superiority for their position (instead of recognizing it as mob mentality).
But the issue is really nuanced enough and important to enough people on an issue of such constitutional importance (not just 2A), that it is a disservice to the issue to just claim he deserves to fry over it, when we have so little information on a topic provided by people who historically lie to achieve their political goals.

People like that aren't part of the gun community, therefore it's not the gun community's job to police them.
It's also... a timing thing? You point out safety violations in the gun community because the worst hasn't happened yet, and you reinforce the rules in the hope that it never will.
But in a case where somebody's disturbed kid has already gotten access to the guns and shot a bunch of people... the worst has already happened.
Maybe more people should make comments about "This is why we do gun safety" or "Should ha' followed the rules".
But saying "I told you so" or "You could have prevented this" or "Welp, that was predictable." after a tragedy isn't most people's first impulse.
