“YO-HO!”, HORDE! (More about the “YO-HO!”” later.) The experienced traveling Horde will immediately recognize the banner pic as Denali/Mount McKinley. What makes that picture unique among countless pictures of that famous mountain is that I took that picture with my Galaxy S23+ (not a promo). Unknown to me at the time, that placed my wife and me in the “10% Club”. It was a great experience, and I counted us extremely lucky with the weather, having only one objectionable day out of 12 between Denali and Vancouver, Canada. This is a travelog of sorts. It will be short, I promise.
The short stay in Anchorage brought us to the 49th State Brewing Company since, literally, anyone we asked said we had to go eat there. I don’t think legal action would have ensued if we had not gone, but everyone was fairly adamant. I don’t get many fish dishes where I am for several reasons, so I jumped at the signature halibut and chips. Sure enough, if you get to Anchorage, you absolutely must go eat at the 49th (to avoid possible legal issues).
After Anchorage and Denali, it was a 9-hour train ride to Whittier for the boat. (Apologies to the Horde. I’m a Naval aviator so even a 105-thousand-ton aircraft carrier is still a “boat”. We do it just to annoy the Black Shoes. (Apologies to the Black Shoe Horde.))
It was our first time on the Grand Princess. It is one of the older boats in their fleet but it was still clean and sparkly and the crew was outstanding. Of course, the whole point of cruising from Anchorage to Vancouver through the Inland Passage is to see glaciers and wildlife. We didn't see much wildlife, although we didn't take any excursions, so we didn't really try very hard. But the glaciers...what I didn't realize until seeing them up close is how loud they are, especially when they calve. We just saw a few smaller ice calves, but they were still thunderous. Here's a You Tube vid from eleven years ago from a Greenland glacier, but you'll get the idea. Volume up to get the deep cracking and rumbling sound.
At 3:22 the narrator notes that they were “just observers, two little dots on the side of a mountain.” Speaking of little dots, checkout the little boat.
What then do I hear? (Random aviation plug.) Why, those are T56s attached to a Coast Guard C-130. Must be a heck of a view!
Everyone knows about the airplane “black box” data recorders that are, of course, not black. But the teleprompter readers are too stupid to know anything useful, so they just call them “black boxes”. Sorry…that is a little opinion that slipped in there and got me off point. I never thought of a ship data recorder until the SS Dali hit the FSK Bridge. But, on one of my many tours of the deck, there was the Grand Princess’s voyage recorder.
Passenger ships and ships other than passenger ships of 3000 gross tonnage and upwards constructed on or after 1 July 2002 [the Grand Princess is 107,517 tons] must carry voyage data recorders (VDRs) to assist in accident investigations, under regulations adopted in 2000, which entered into force on 1 July 2002…Like the black boxes carried on aircraft, VDRs enable accident investigators to review procedures and instructions in the moments before an incident and help to identify the cause of any accident.
The cruise docked at the usual suspe…err…ports. Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. Many of the horde have no doubt visited them so I will keep comments to a minimum. Skagway was interesting. I didn’t know it was part of the parks system. I also didn’t know the ”Alaska gold rush” was two separate events that took place around Dawson, Canada and Nome, Alaska.
The Klondike Gold Rush slowed by the end of 1898 as word got out there was little gold left to be had. Countless miners had already left Yukon Territory penniless, leaving gold-mining cities such as Dawson and Skagway rapidly declining.
The Klondike Gold Rush ended in 1899 with the discovery of gold in Nome, Alaska. The find reignited the pipe dreams of many dejected miners who quickly forgot the hardships they’d just endured and couldn’t wait to set out on a new adventure.
Juneau was not very fun as it was the one cold, windy and rainy day of the trip. Nice picture at the Whale Project sculpture though.
Ketchikan was very fun, watching the parade of seaplanes pass by our balcony was fun (for me, at least). And, now for the “YO-HO” part: The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show. It is a little corny but fun and the audience is expected to yell, cheer, boo and scream “YO-HO!” on demand. Tricked out, dueling chainsaws…how can you not love those?
Finally, early dockside in Vancouver. I had laid over there several times, but the wife had never been. We paid big bucks for the Marriott Bayshore with an additional goal of redeeming a birthday present from the kids: a seaplane ride. The 20-minute tour around the city in a Harbour Air DHC2 Beaver with a purring P&W R985 was better than I expected. Plus, I got a .2 PIC out of the deal!
If you’re not familiar with de Havilland Canada airplanes, the company has produced some of the best backwoods, bush airplanes in the world (out of necessity, I might add. Have you been to Canada?) The Beaver was designed and built shortly after WW2. 1600 airframes later, it is still one of the premier workhorses for bush and water flying. You can read more in this great article.
Officially known as the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 MkI Beaver, the aircraft was meticulously designed as a purpose-built bush airplane capable of carrying heavy loads into confined, and sometimes rough, areas. Conceived and built in Downsview, Ontario, Canada, much of the Beaver’s early flight testing was done on floats…The Beaver made its initial flight in August 1947, and the first production Beaver was delivered soon thereafter, in early 1948. By the time production ended in 1967, approximately 1,650 Mk.I Beavers has been built, in addition to a single Mk.II prototype with a 500-hp Alvis Leonides engine, and 60 Mk.III turbo Beavers.
In Anchorage, Rust’s Aviation has been flying from Lake Hood for decades, but you’d better book early. In Vancouver it’s Harbour Air or Sea Air. You really must take a scenic flight. In fact, if you are in a Pacific coast city, you will likely have a choice of air tour operators. (Pro tip: choose the radial engine Beaver.)
Vancouver was/is spectacular, the weather was perfect, and the city was sparkling*. If you have never been, you simply must go (to avoid possible legal issues).
*It’s not all fun and games, even in that beautiful city. We inadvertently blundered into the drug and homeless district on East Hastings Street. No legal issues there. Tolerance is the name of the game with predictable results. At least it was daytime, and it introduced the wife to open meth cooking, fentanyl zombies and unusual odors.
Imagine drug addicts clustered together on the sidewalk under make-shift lean-tos of tarps and rope surrounded by filth, empty food containers, clothes, shoes, garbage bags and bottles…Think of trying to manoeuvre public sidewalks that have been taken over pretty much entirely for blocks by those makeshift lean-tos, scores of bikes, walkers, wheelchairs, wagons, shopping carts and of course the addicts…The stench of urine, feces and pot is everywhere and at certain points along the street on the sunny afternoon, goods (perhaps stolen?) for sale were laid out on blankets.
That’s a heck of a way to end a travel log, eh? So, here are a couple of random but positive items for your enjoyment. The new Chick-fil-A concept is exclusively drive thru. There are two lanes for mobile orders and two for drive up. It looks like an office building to me, but Chick-fil-A usually puts a fair amount of thought into any new project. Fortunately, a #1 with a vanilla shake (cherry, no whip) is just as good as Truett’s Not fancy, just consistent.
And as Professor Malcom (Jeff Goldblum) informed us in Jurassic Park, “life finds a way”.
That’s a watermelon vine refusing to be contained, finding a way out from under the office at my local airport.
So, here’s to uncontained life, oh great Horde! Be careful out there!

Thank you for the Emergency ONT, Roger. I have ridden in a DeHavilland Beaver on several occasions, on actual bush trips.
I grew up in Vancouver, and that part of East Hastings Street was a go-to for bar-hopping as a yute. But it was not wall-to-wall derelicts like the pic above. The odd sad alky, but mostly the streets were clean, and the cops kept them that way. And that was when the only good Chinese food was sold by restaurants in Chinatown.

One of the enduring shame of U.S. .mil/ind, was the utter annihilation of the Canadian aircraft manufacturing industry.
Know why there's not been much in the way of anything new or "breakthroughs" in aerospace? Yeah, advancements are exponentially more expensive. I get that.
But it's also become the death of competition heralds the loss of innovation. The survivors become fat, lazy and complacent.
Applies as much to General Aviation as it does the .mil stuff, too.

Otters are considerably larger than Beavers, aircraft-wise. They built single Otters, but most of the ones in service now have twin engines. Any many of them, and Beavers, have been retrofitted with turbine engines.

I think that what really killed off a vibrant market in aviation is the winner takes all contracts that became the norm over time. In both the US and Europe, the end state was one giant government controlled consortium that dominated all aircraft manufacturing, both public and private.
I think it’s a classic example as to how economies of scale combined with government encouragement will create a monopoly that cannot be broken.

A.V. Roe and Company. British, initially, I think, but they had a huge presence in Canada. Built the Lancaster bomber, for one. In the late 1950's, Avro developed the Avro Arrow, a supersonic jet interceptor that was way ahead of its time. AVRO didn't just "go under". They'd sunk tons into the then, highly competitive Avro Arrow, Mach 2.5++ interceptor. Not just fast, but monster radar and huge weapons loadout.
U.S. House & Senate funded Avro Crushing Contracts to various U.S. planemakers, and so vastly underbid AVRO for the Canadian Defense Contracts, that Canada had no choice under the laws, but to select the U.S. products.
Oversimplified, to be sure, but that's the gist of it. And the same happened to every other Canadian manufacturer, all the way down to the Canuk division of Shorts Aircraft of Belfast, Northern Ireland.
DeHavilland hung on to the last, I think. And now there are some Canadian firefighting amphibs, but I don't know if that assembly line is still rolling.
Shame. Canada produced world class planes, back then. The Canadian made F-86 Sabre was the highest performing Sabre of them all.

If I were a Navy guy I would be profoundly embarrassed that our Navy has nothing better then 105,000 ton aircraft carriers but Norwegian Cruise Line just ordered a 270,000 ton boat.
We should have aircraft carriers much larger than that by now, and they should be able to fly, and reach orbit.
But then again, a nation 35 trillion in debt shouldn't be having delusions about being a world power.

That is cool! Now that is what I call a small town. I only picture those planes with floats, so I had to adjust my mental image for a second!
Not related to your story, but I did learn from one of the pilots that they don't like water that's smooth as glass. Messes with depth perception or something when landing. Us non-pilots were commenting on how beautiful the water was and ooh-ing and aah-ing about how it was like glass. The pilot was like, yeah, no.

I think she's close to a foot shorter than Trump and claims she's never met him in person. With two men, there is always a brief moment on their first meeting where they size each other up and, even unconsciously, judge whether each could take the other. Looking the other guy in the eyes, you can see who is boss. With a man and a woman under those circumstances, I don't know if the same kind of dynamic holds. But you have to figure that somehow the person-to-person advantage is to Trump.

I get it. But BS.
Anyone with a clue and the will could tell you to make that roof restricted access, to get on the same effing frequencies to coordinate actions, and use a drone to surveil the area. Local PD told them to cover the roof, and they ignored it. They were provided radios to coordinate comms and turned them down.
It was extreme dereliction and incompetence at the most charitable. But sure, some zoom webinar would have fixed that.

Hale was under mental care for two decades at Vanderbilt Medical, was reported to have been diagnosed with five mental conditions, reportedly on several different mind/mood altering meds, was under consideration for involuntary commitment three times, and those treating her failed to inform parents that she wanted to kill her Dad and had a fascination with Columbine.
And yet, she was able to pass a background check multiple times.
Now you know why the journals could not be released. It embarrasses those who failed to prevent it or enabled it.

It's interesting to think that the North Korean government is worried about that. I do wonder how much information from the outside world is getting into North Korea these days.
I always wondered why the USSR went through the charade of having elections and a constitution and a rubber-stamp parliament. The only conclusion I could come to was that the Communists felt the veneer of legitimacy was necessary for some reason, that at some level they feared their people.
Poland (except in Warsaw, which was pretty much rubbled in WWII) never expropriated land. Why not? Again, at some level they had to have been afraid that it would result in toppling the government.
Like I said, if it's true, it's interesting that North Korea thinks it needs to show brute force to claim to be acting on behalf of its people.

An explanation I believe is that the NK government never provided any funds or materials to do basic preparations for any level of flooding, so when the floods were devastating it was hugely embarrassing to the NK government. Kim’s response was to grab 20 or 30 prominent local officials and publicly execute them, even though there was nothing they could have done about the flooding. This had the twin effects of A) making Kim look like he was “doing something”; and B) letting everyone know what’s in store for them if they even think about criticizing Kim.

Average temp here for today (well the 4th, yesterday now), was 68.5F, compared to roughly mid to high 70s most of the time over August.
Days are getting shorter here at ~35N a smidge over 2 minutes per day now. Those farther north, it's even faster.
And that decrease relative to standard time has now shifted well to the sunset side, so sunset is getting earlier and earlier at a pretty good clip now which contributes to the fall is coming effect.

Last week in a telecon with media the FBI Pittsburgh Office Special Agent in Charge sad the scumbag's weapon remains fully functional and was fired by the FBI.
"Additionally, regarding the subject's rifle, the FBI Lab Division successfully test-fired the weapon, concluding it was and remains fully operational. They also positively matched all eight shell casings located on the roof with the subject's rifle."

About a third of the way down. Do a word search on 'rifle'.
The chunk blasted-out the top of the stock begins near the end of the carbine-length buffer tube, by my reading of the FBI-released photo. So, buffer tube may not be damaged or warped enough to affect spring and buffer movement. (Yeah, I know - FBI photos and statements)

To a 21 year old pretty much untrained combat shooter? Fragments from the wound would make them most likely freeze up.
But, if he was a right handed shooter, then the bullet came from WAY outside the perimeter... not from the snipers on the buildings closer to the stage.
If you look at his neck, you can see a wound there... consistent with the hole in the stock... but the angle of entry means it would have to come from WAY outside of the supposed bullet paths, UNLESS it came through his mouth, then shoulder, then hit the rifle?
But then the pattern of the hole in the stock itself becomes.... weird.

NO ONE is seeing the "Buffer Tube" on Crook's M4 carbine. Stop repeating that myth, already!
What you're seeing is the outer sleeve of the telescoping stock, and the inner mounting core, which slides on OVER the buffer tube, and is retained by a large nut at the receiver base.
Two sturdy layers of (usually) Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic, before you even GET to the Buffer Tube, itself.
Dammit, it'd be obvious, but everyone is parroting every other site and many other commenters, even here.

Read the Daily Mail linked above. It seems like the local SWAT came from behind at some parts of the story (a ground shot that would have to have been from the side of the slope that Crooks was on). Then in other parts, it describes the local SWAT was in the line of fire of the shooter, which could only work if he ran from the front side of AGR to the back. Not very illuminating, overall.

The DM story describes the SS shot as through right side of his mouth and out behind right ear. That could have caused stock damage. But the story also describes the local SWAT shot hitting the stock and peppering Crooks in the shoulder, face, and neck.

Europe is being invaded by muslims, and now black Africans. America was first invaded by Mexico, then Central and South America. Now we have the UN coming across illegally. Oh, and all these global illegal immigration issues mainly stems around the fact that these 'economic migrants' are mostly single young men, 15-30, coming into countries, including ours; we're starting to see the results of that now, what with that Venezuelan gang in CO, plus all the other crime including murder. We have Chinese police stations in this country, monitoring the local Chinese populations. A nice foreign army, or armies, already in place ready to be activated.

Haven't flown in a Beaver but was lucky to ride in a Taylorcraft floatplane a bit between Fairbanks and areas north (helping set up a duck hunting camp for fall). Swampy area, so plenty of places to land, and the pilot would cruise around on the water looking for moose on the way to the camp site, or to take off again.
For some reason, this now makes me think of the ill-fated IJN pilot who, not knowing about local conditions, set his disabled Zero down on what looked like a suitable spot on Akutan Island in June '43, and was killed instantly when the plane flipped in the swampy foilage. A PBY noticed it, it was recovered and shipped here, where it was restored to flying condition and USN pilots at North Island explored its strengths and weaknesses.

Any Alaska cruise is worth taking. Inland passage, the missus and I have done it twice. Glacier Bay was amazing. The ship anchored about 250 yards away from enormous chunks of ice calving into the ocean, sometimes even spraying us with water.
In Alaska I saw streams so full of salmon that you would think you could walk across on their backs and never get your feet wet. Eagles as common as crows in the lower 48.

That means that they aren't subject to the political whimsy of whatever pathetic human happens to temporarily occupy the various offices of whichever government happens to burden us at any given time.

If you do, all social contracts are thereby null and void.

Mike Hammer, I made a note of that book, The collision of those ships occurred of the coast of Massachusetts and I would like to read about that.

Believe me, I know, but she could fool the masses. Speaking about nothing and lying about something in an easy yet forceful way is the very best Obama style.

Yeah, I haven't heard of this one either. What is supposed to be going on with this?

David Paulides has been on Coast to Coast - I mentioned it to you some months back.

I don't think any Green Berets or Rangers are going to find anyone. Well, they aren't all found, or found dead, or found alive. Disappearances are often near bodies of water, IIRC.

I'm about 80% there on aliens, but that doesn't really help much because of the PSYOPS. I guess I'll just lay low and monitor the woo.

I was going to make a 'joke' but I have to admit I have heard about all the missing people in National Parks. Quite a few along the Appalachian Trail, too. I'm not sayin' there's not a serial killer or two out there doin' his thing, but Occam's Razor says it's nature, maybe even wilderness. Lots of animals and reptiles who get hungry, steep inclines, bodies of water (as you say). Mother Nature is always trying to kill you. Sometimes she wins. Then the scavengers take over.

Some do.

More like 11-1/2 months in AK and 2 weeks in Hawaii, along about the end of February. I like it.

354 I'm trying to remember a wild missing person (who returned story) I was watching a little while back. It was either Ancient Aliens or one of the other shows, Unexplained Mysteries, etc (there are a bunch of these).
Anyway, some guy is on some nature hike thing, vacation, and disappears. They find his tracks leading out on a frozen lake. They tracks just end. They figure the ice gave way and that was the end.
Months later, he just shows back up at his home, in the same clothes he said. According to him, he woke up in the middle of a field fairly close to home. To him, only a few hours or so had passed he thought when he woke up.
He remembered walking out on the ice and that was it. The field he woke up in was hundreds of miles from where he disappeared.
A "fugue state" would be the conventional explanation.

A human, without a serious weapon, is pretty far down the food chain. You are tougher than a marmot, but easier than an adult deer.

The "missing 411" phenomenon. The proponent of this, a somewhat controversial figure, did a lot of legwork on his own after being hired to investigate a missing individual.
There are quite a few stories, thought the earliest ones that I found were "interesting" in that a few thought they were genuinely pretty strange, people popping behind a big rock to take a piss or whatever something like that. "I saw him go around the tree, and then never saw him again". That kind of thing. Then they'd find his body a year later 20 miles away, 2500 feet higher in elevation, without any shoes on,.

"A plant in Charleroi will close its doors by the end of the year. Employees at the Anchor Hocking plant say they were given the news by the chief executive officer. The closure would affect around 325 jobs."
-----
Anchor Hocking at one time employed 10,000 people if their old radio advertisements could believed. They made Fire King ovenware among other things. Good stuff. Competitor to Pyrex maybe, similar. Pyrex (or whoever makes it) shot themselves in the head by changing the "recipe" they used for the glass.
The whole point of Pyrex was oven safe glassware. And the shit started breaking in the oven. Ya gotta wonder sometime about decision-making process with some folks.

Morning, fellow insomaniacals! I survived my ghastly work reception yesterday. The Big Boss showed up, bigger than mine, and so none of us dared slide out until he left. I entertained myself by talking with a young couple from Chile; the female half had just arrived in town that afternoon. I speak Espanol un poco y muy lentamente, and their English was terrific. They asked me about Mardi Gras beads, among other topics.
Anyway, enough sleep, and now some coffee. What's doing here?

317 The first ten amendments are known as the Bill of Rights.
That means that they aren't subject to the political whimsy of whatever pathetic human happens to temporarily occupy the various offices of whichever government happens to burden us at any given time.
You can't put your hand on your book and swear to uphold it and then overturn it.
If you do, all social contracts are thereby null and void.
