Biden-Harris Administration Brings Joy to Employers By Depressing White Collar and Blue Collar Wages
As your wages contract in the midst of high, unstoppable inflation, please remember: Kamala Harris is practicing the "politics of joy," as her media propagandists have dubbed it. She is above petty concerns about real wage losses and stagflation: She's all about bringing joy.
This is "vibes" election, not a "facts" election. Racists. Biden and Harris will end their fake presidency and vice-presidency with a perfect economic storm. And this will not Bring Joy, I can assure you. There's more great news for the Biden-Harris economy: Dollar General is reporting a "record drop" in sales. Usually downscale stores and fast food restaurants are seen as a good hedge in a recession -- almost recession-proof and inflation-proof, as it were. Dollar General is not the cheapest place to buy food, but there is one a mile from me, while Aldi's is 15 miles. DG is the only real store in the small town by me, so they have been doing well.
But if people are short on cash, they will probably not shop at DG very much. I'm not sure what other cheap crap they sell, but it is generally more about convenience than savings, imo.

McDonald’s in my area is paying $17-18 an hour, about double the state minimum wage. I doubt $20/hr in California is that much of a burden. It’s most likely right around market rate.

We used to be able to get a $5 sandwich from the cafe located upstairs from my office.
Now it's around $7.50 just for a cold, pre-made sandwich.
Then factor in chips and a drink and that's going to run around $12 at least.
For something that used to cost well below $10.

I've long been convinced that the Democrats think the economy is magic.
"Yeah, sometimes it goes bad (for unknown reasons), but it always gets better (for unknown reasons.)
But we can use those downturns to push through the policies we want, whether the economy is good or bad, and then when the magic economy gets better, we can say it was our policies that did it!"

This is anecdotal but telling. I talked to a young store clerk at Walgreens here in my country town in East Tennessee just last week and she told me that she was making about $9 an hour and when Trump was president, she was able to afford to keep her car and have her apartment and still have some spending money. But now she says she can't afford to do any of that because the inflation is so ruinous. Yes she gets it that the Democrats have ruined everything.

A lot of people never realize just how much states regulated their economies in the first place.
The fed minimum wage is still 7.25 per hour and has not been raised in years.
What you are seeing is the effects of federalism and inflation rates pushing costs of labor higher.
Some states have jumped up labor rates far beyond that. Part of that is because of labor contract language with prevailing wage clauses.
Wickard v. Filburn needs to be relitigated as well.

One of my peers had this experience at his Midwest mfg. company. A couple of hundred illegal aliens who performed semi-skilled labor walked off the job because they heard that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was going to do a raid. (It wasn’t clear whether the company knew they were illegal aliens or not.) The company was understandably desperate to fulfill customer orders, so they went to the market to replace the employees. When they did so they realized that they had to pay fifty percent more in wages. Fifty percent! The remaining employees who were citizens got a huge raise. The new employees got market wages. These jobs were ideal for those without college educations or formal training. They require some skill, but it can be learned on the job.

I'd argue that the people making c. $200K are the most impressive spending cohort in our economy. They are the ones who dine out on a discretionary basis. They are the target market for mid to high fashion, and they go on the most vacations. You hollow out these earners, and the economy feels their loss much more than the departure of the rich would.

I don't think $200k is all that much, especially in bigger cities with higher cost of living. Make it a family of four and you probably need a quarter of that for a home where the good schools are.

Doomberg has an article about the oil refineries in CA. There are three of them and they make the special blends that are only used in CA. None of the surrounding states have refineries. The state Is in the process of regulating them out of business. Chevron has left the state and will likely close the refineries. That's when life in CA will get really interesting.

I'd argue that the people making c. $200K are the most impressive spending cohort in our economy. They are the ones who dine out on a discretionary basis. They are the target market for mid to high fashion, and they go on the most vacations. You hollow out these earners, and the economy feels their loss much more than the departure of the rich would.

The summer after High School in the early 90's I got a job before college started at a company that made floating fishing intertubes. There were so many illegals working there. One night shift, one of the guys runs in the back open roll up door screaming "la migra! la migra!" and the whole place cleared out like it was on fire. I'd never seen anything like it. There were probably only 25 employees left. Immigration did show up, and did a half ass job of pretending to care. The place shut down for 24 hours and when they reopened almost everybody was back like nothing happened. It was a real eye opener for an 18 year old kid.

It will also bring down prices. Part of why food prices have shot up is you can fill these jobs.
It used to be normal for a 16 year old to work at McDonalds to save up for a car, now it's some middle age immigrant that wants a living wage and cadillac benefits.

Doomberg has an article about the oil refineries in CA. There are three of them and they make the special blends that are only used in CA. None of the surrounding states have refineries. The state Is in the process of regulating them out of business. Chevron has left the state and will likely close the refineries. That's when life in CA will get really interesting.

I've had a 3.4% pay cut myself, not counting bonuses which are going to be only 80% of the normal amount this year. Lots of places are sneaking in pay cuts with benefits changes. Accounting for inflation, base pay is now quite a bit lower than when I started for this employer and they're losing people left and right on account of it. If it wasn't for assorted extra bonuses I'd be jumping ship for a ~50k increase.

I used my cheap Aldi's eggs with my cheap Safeway bakery bread for a strata today (haven't made one in, um, years, but the weather sucks and the fridge is bare and this stuff was cheap - used 20 eggs, and a whole loaf (plus leftover crusts from Aldi's crap bread), some dying veg, but only 1lb of sausage (and no cheese for obvious reasons - nutritional yeast was put in, instead).
Now I need eggs, so hopefully, Aldi's doesn't raise the price this weekend, b/c when they do raise prices on staples, it tends to be drastic...

Annual pay increases for private employees averages what? 3%? That is all I've gotten each year for the last 3+ years. With inflation raging on multiples of that rate -- employees keep falling behind.
In the last 3+ years I've gotten 1 raise of 2%. People bring up the fact that they cannot afford to live where they work and upper management says "we pay to the cost of labor, not the cost of living"... "oh, and we're sending your jobs to India".

PS - I am currently bitter b/c I'm getting near my treatment period...and by waiting, I now have a new diagnosis 4 years in (yes, my cancer has changed from CLL to MCL - now an even rarer unicorn than I was before - right before I start) and shittier treatment options...what I want is still in a clinical trial (phase 3) and b/c I'm not 60+, I can't be in the trial. What I can get with approved insurance (and no work) will either immediately kill me or not help much and possibly risk the future helpful treatment - so yes, if I'm stuck, I'm leaning to the latter treatment which is hilariously considered palliative (b/c only old and frail get it). It should be an interesting virtual call next Friday.
Not happy, although I have a very convincing spouse who did mention if I still had the old cancer diagnosis, too, my treatment would be approved, 1 drug from 1 and 1 drug from the other...not sure it works that way...

I'm extra bitter b/c what would help, a Car-T therapy, requires you to fail two specific lines of therapy (the one that won't help me, an intense chemotherapy, and actually can harm Car-T, and a BTKi Inhibitor)...and then you still have to be in almost perfect health for insurance to pay.
If I go through 2 lines before I even get to Car T...it seems like my health probably won't be as great...
That said, the BTKi inhibitor is what I'm looking to combine with Rituximab...and that's the trial - it's literally getting compared to the current standard...and it's 60+.
I'm really bitter about the age, but I computed the number of females under 50 with MCL with TP53 deletion and Complex Karyotype in the US roughly...and by the online stats, I get 2 (now, it could be 5-10 b/c I assumed no combos). Total. 243 total under 50 in the US (before computing for my rare stats) b/c getting it under 50 is so rare. And more than 70% are men.
So, insurance can't handle us, and trials don't want us b/c there's no getting rich at those numbers...

Bongino really lowered the boom on the Secret Service on today's shows. He says he has names, and those people either resign or he starts calling them out by name. This is over the cocaine in the White House story. He says he knows who is trying to destroy the evidence and why. He gave big hints to the media on who to investigate. The partial DNA evidence on the baggie is damning as to who it belonged to.

In the last 3+ years I've gotten 1 raise of 2%. People bring up the fact that they cannot afford to live where they work and upper management says "we pay to the cost of labor, not the cost of living"... "oh, and we're sending your jobs to India".
