Is RFKJr. the Key to Attracting Suburban "Health Moms"?

The realignment of left and right has broken a lot of the political ice that kept people frozen into positions they've held so long they've forgotten why they adopted them in the first place.

One area where the left and right are more aligned than before is on matters of health. There are a lot of right-leaning gym bros who have looked into what they might have previously rejected as "silly health worryism" from the left, and found those positions have some merit.

For example: Hollywood has long been a bastion of "left-wing anti-vax nuttery." Now many on the right have adopted vax-skeptical positions.

Women have tended to be much more health-conscious than men and have been more willing to look at new thinking on the issues. Men, especially conservative-leaning men, tend to dismiss all "new thinking" as faddish and Obviously Wrong.

You know, I thought the same thing about the Atkins diet. Faddish and obviously wrong! But Atkins' book explained that this wasn't faddish and new -- and that Akshually, the old thinking had been, for one hundred years of medicine, that carbohydrate causes weight gain, not fat.

It was only in the late 70s and then more seriously in the 80s that the "old thinking," that carbohydrate causes weight gain and dietary fat is relatively benign, got displaced in favor of the theory that dietary fat was the enemy and we should replace fat with lots and lots of carbs.

And that "new thinking" was pushed by... the federal government, which, of course, always gets everything right.

Anyway, I think that these simple rules-of-thumb about whether a theory is "new" or "time-tested" is simplistic -- new, as of when? Is "eating naturally" a "new," "Hippie" idea? Weren't people doing that for 10,000 years?

RFKJr.'s endorsement of Trump, and pushing of health as a major issue -- why are chronic diseases worse than ever? Why are children, especially, sick with chronic illnesses at great rates than at any other point in history? -- might drag some of these "Health moms" to the Trump side.

Maybe.

Out: Soccer Moms and Security Moms. In: Health Moms.

Is RFK Jr. the secret to suburban women?

Everyone says that Donald Trump needs to recruit suburban women voters. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. may be his secret weapon. We used to hear about soccer moms, but RFK, Jr. may be able to mobilize a new group, the Health Moms.

Several years ago, I was eating lunch at one of the concourse "sidewalk cafes" in the Houston airport when I noticed that a guy sitting a few tables away was attracting a steady stream of attractive, middle-aged, soccer-mom types stopping by for autographs. I had no idea who he was, but I asked my waiter who said he was a vaccine activist. Apparently he was a rock star among yoga pants wearing moms who worried about vaccine safety and the like. (This was pre-Covid).

In that crowd, RFK, Jr. is a much, much bigger rock star. And the suburban Health Moms who don't trust the establishment on health issues are numerous and don't just fall on the right.

In fact, the crunchy, health-conscious mom shopping local and organic, avoiding high-fructose corn syrup and canola oil, and suspicious of the prescriptions and proscriptions of the medical establishment, has generally been found on the left, though that has changed in recent years to a degree. Popular Instagram accounts like House in Habit, with over 1.2 million followers, talk about this stuff all the time to huge audiences.

A lot of gym bros have adopted this as Bro Science.

...

Government nutrition guidelines have as much to do with what foodstuffs the government wants people to buy as what is good for them. (As even NPR has reported, concerns about eggs and cholesterol were made popular by President Lyndon Baines Johnson, trying to hold down food prices in a time of inflation. Johnson told the Surgeon General to issue an alert about cholesterol in eggs, so people would buy fewer and the price would fall.)

The "food pyramid" is a joke, the FDA does a poor job of policing foods and additives, and Americans are way too fat, and it's not just because we aren't exercising enough.

People care about their health, but people -- especially many mothers, I suspect -- care even more about their children's health.

...

What matters for the election is that RFK, Jr. is talking about that stuff -- under the rubric of "Make America Healthy Again" -- and the Health Moms are listening, and now he's endorsed Trump. This election is likely to be close. And close elections are decided at the margins.

Glenn Reynolds adds:

[As always, if you like these essays, please take out a paid subscription. I will thank you, and my family will thank you.]

Kamala Harris says she is very interested in telling people to eat less red meat-- a health prescription right out of 1970s junk "science."

But I'm sure she'll change that position soon enough.

I guess this is a good place to ask: How are yo' GAINZZZ?

I haven't had GAINZZZ all summer. Or spring. Allergies were hard this year, and also, I was lazy. I keep posting GAINZZZ threads because my lack of GAINZZZ should not be a reason you can't talk about your GAINZZZ.

Starting this week, I'm recommitting to GAINZZZ. I'll call a guy from Taskrabbit and see if he can star working out for me. If that falls through, I guess I'll just have to resign myself to, starting today, hardcore keto and carnivore mode -- and back to the egg-heavy diet -- and working out myself.

14 "carbohydrate causes weight gain, not fat."

A major part of the problem is the terminology. "Fat" = "fatty acids" = health, but "fat" is also an adjective for excess adipose tissue which results from storage of excess carbohydrates.

30 I think the insight that it "permits" people to support Trump is spot-on.
We've had 8+ years of pure Trump hate 24/7 on the cable networks.
There's a massive, powerful social enforcement mechanism to keep women in the herd of Democrat 4Ever.
Support of RFK Jr (and Trump) allows them to question all the disgusting anti-American, anti-freedom positions of the Democrats openly.

31 Yes, the anti-pharma anti-vaccination hippie health food "Prevention" and healing with crystals and incense and some good windowpane was always pretty much a left wing thing.

There is some overlap, because the vaccination schedule was expanded, and some shots are multi-medicine package deals e.g. DPT, pertussis, etc. So baby gets loaded up with about 25 different immunizations now, when it used to be 3 or 4.

It (was) possible to "hide" children in a society that largely has herd immunity to a given disease, and thus avoid possible complications to vaccines or vaccine side effects.

The enthusiasm to sign up for an emergency use only, experimental vaccine was something to behold. One thing that struck me, anyone expressing even the slightest reservation online was descended upon like a pack of crows. On one discussion forum, I merely pointed out it was experimental and boy, gee wouldn't it be nice if it works and doesn't cause any problems.

RHEEEE! The first was a denial that it was even experimental i.e. brand new. Oh no, "it's just like the flu shot we take every year".

35 Pregant women are told to steer clear of lots of things, and this might carry over after the baby's born.

For example, the Boar's Head listeria outbreak shouldn't affect pregnant women because they're told not to eat cold cuts. (Listeria might cross the plancental barrier and lead to miscarriage.) But they're probably not going to buy BH products now for their families either.

There's a small moment in Joe Dante's Matinee. It was made in the early 90s, but set in 1963.

The scene is meant as satirical of old school dieting habits, so it's a teacher pulling down a screen that shows the ideal diet: almost all fatty meats with talk about how it's going to keep you thin. This, of course, is in a scene with only thin kids while the reality of the time was the same.

So, it's intended as a satirical jab at outdated science, but the science it's implicitly supported is outdated now. It's a cycle.

66 Listen, y’all. I am not going to tell you what to do, I am not your mother. I will, with love, tell you that in order to sustain anything it has to be…wait for it…sustainable. Going hardcore keto will cause you to lose weight. Because you are cutting your calories. You will start to have cravings for carbs, especially if you are working out hard. Your body tells you what it needs, many of us fail to listen.

I would offer to you a slightly different approach, assuming no health issues, etc. Stop thinking about this as a diet to get to goal x. That contemplates short term deprivation. Your body needs protein, fat, and carbs. The kind of carbs you eat matters. Of course highly processed, highly sugared carbs will cause weight gain - they are calorie dense. I've been doing classic compound movements at the gym 3x per week. Squats, RDLs, hack squats, bench, rows, lateral dumbbell raises, triceps, curls, deadlifts, back raises, etc.

I'm particularly proud of my squats, bench, and deadlift. Last week I did four sets of three at 350 for deadlift. Zero bounce, I'm setting it fully and gently on the ground. My squats are fully in control, solid form, past parallel. I comfortably did three sets of four at 245 on Monday. I did five sets of four at 185 for bench. Again, full control to chest, a pause, and punching out.

I'm in a strength cycle, so these are all with reps in reserve and not at maximum possible weight.

That being said, when I hear about wage equity I consider the fact that women usually cost their employers more in the long run...not to mention if you compared women to men on extra hours worked, women fall short there as well.

Zinc replenishment is huge. Every crop cycle takes more and more out of the soil and just like humans, it's a defense mechanism against disease for plants too.

When Trump was in the hospital with covid they gave him zinc and ivermectin* which aids the body in absorbing zinc. A one two punch. He was out of the hospital in three days iirc.

Their body their choice, bigot.

Posted by: Sponge - F*ck Joe Biden at August 30, 2024 02:27 PM (Zz0t1)

115 Your body does not "need carbs". There are no essential carbohydrates. You will die without protein and fat, though.

There is a single organ in the human body that needs glucose, and that is the brain. It can get all it needs, by synthesizing from other foods.

Most people are "sugar burners". They get all their energy, all day every day, from glucose. Even tiny mitochondria, at the cellular level, can have a preference for glucose and the fat-burning pathways become atrophied from disuse.

The reason cutting back on carbs works is because it forces this process to occur faster, assuming calories are cut back enough. Calorie reduction is what does this, it forces the body into a metabolic workout, by re-learning how to upregulate fatty acids and turn it into energy. Every "diet" works this way.

No weight loss can occur unless and until all glucose stores are exhausted, in the liver, bloodstream, etc. Alcohol is burned preferentially over carbohydrate, which is why it in turn will nuke any diet very quickly.

146 "side of veggies (no carbs)"

Are there any veggies that are no-carb? I don't think so. Avocado (which is a fruit) is mostly fat, but it still has a little carb. Olives (also a fruit) may have no carb.

147 > The reason cutting back on carbs works is because it forces this process to occur faster, assuming calories are cut back enough.

In my experience, carbs trigger hunger. If I stick to a bit more than 1/3 protein, a bit more than 1/3 fat, and less than 1/3 carbs, I don't have hunger spikes and maintaining a calorie deficit is easy peasy.

If I have a big carby meal, suddenly I have big cravings and it's very hard to maintain a calorie deficit.

He prefaces the book with his history as a medical school student and then a Professor teaching at UCLA Med. School and his practice. Basically doctors know shit about proper treatment for metabolic diseases without drugs. Lufkin explains that metabolic dysfunction is the common underlying cause of most chronic diseases that has been overlooked for decades, providing the tools needed to prevent and reverse them in ourselves. He draws on expansive, peer-reviewed evidence, proving that standard medical recommendations are killing us. He has reversed 4 metabolic diseases that he had using what his book recommends. Well researched and laid out for the general public. He scorches not only general medicine, but the FDA, CDC, and pharmaceutical companies among others. Easy reading and highly recommend.

Study the nutrion facts label on everything you eat. Get a scale, a gram scale, and weigh your portions out. Don't forget anything, calories add up QUICK.

I figured out right away, weight loss is what you eat, not what you do. An extra spoonful of peanut butter would take a couple hours of serious exercise to burn off. It's like topping off with gasoline and then going on an unnecessary 150 mile roadtrip to burn it off every day.

The next thing you'll discover, though, sedentary people particularly as they age, don't need very many calories. 1500 might be too many. I can see why taking a pill sounds so lucrative.

Does this mean people still stuff their face with 3000 calories, yet lose weight? I'm sure there couldn't possibly be any weird side effects with something like that, no sir.

Carbs are a macronutrient that provide energy, true. But it’s more than that. Vegetables and fruits provide a whole host of micronutrients. Fiber rich carbs help remove toxins, etc.

Your brain requires glucose to function well, and carbs provide this, they also support cell vitality. The problem is people associate carbs with a brownie, and that isn’t the case. Legumes are carbs. Spinach is a carb. A carrot. Minimally processed carbs are good for you, in conjunction with proteins fats.

I've decided to drop some weight so, I'm doing the usual.

Eat less, exercise more. Dial back on the carbs. Drop cocktails to once per week.

Not trying to lose too fast cuz that makes you look wrinkly as you approach 29.

I've dropped about 15 lbs, buuuuut now I've hit that point where your weight kinda loiters around a certain point. A little down, a little up. That sort of thing.

Maybe change my high fiber breakfast to more egg-based. And exercise even more ought to get things going again.

Not a hard thing it just requires discipline.

212 Alcohol is problematic, because it is burned preferentially over carbohydrate.

Remember, no fat burning can occur until glucose stores are emptied from the liver and bloodstream. And the alcohol is going to be processed first. Always. It's sort of like a poison, as far as the body is concerned.

See also: Non-alcoholic fatty liver. It's easy to screw up the liver, even without booze. Excess calories, especially carbs - turn the gut into one big petri-dish, and fructose can only be processed by the liver, it is unusable by cells. And then the hydrogenated oils, which are fairly indigestible. I'm surprised liver failure isn't more common. Maybe it is, they just call it something else.

For women, especially after a certain age, it’s like the entire universe is trying to make you hang on to every ounce. Making huge changes to dietary habits AND making time for yourself to workout is not easy. It’s not a light switch. It’s a journey.

Finding 50 minutes for you every day to do something should be priority. You make so many things a priority for others. Give yourself the gift of 50 minutes a day, no matter what, at least 4 days a week.

Marathon in Seward. He held the record for 80 and over age group for a few years, too, until Fred finally turned 80. His theory was that even though he was never fast, his competition mostly died off. Anyway, he lost about 30 pounds and his blood pressure dropped precipitously, and he was very healthy right up until his stroke at 86. Something will always get you, but it isn't too late to try.

251 Your brain requires glucose to function well, and carbs provide this, they also support cell vitality.
-------

Carbohydrate is not necessary; there are no "essential carbohydrates" you have to get that through your head on a technical basis.

"Cell vitality" sounds like nonsense. The human body has the remarkable ability to synthesize all the glucose it needs from protein and fat.

Those are "essential", meaning "you will die" without them. Glucose can be utilized by every cell in the body, indeed this is the problem. Over time, even at the cellular level, there will be a marked preference for glucose over fat.

Our bodies like to take the "what do we have to eat around here anyway?" and glucose is instant energy. But it is otherwise a poison in excess.

253 Another way "old thinking" kind of helps is that the old folks never substituted motor oil for cooking oil.

Vegetable oils were an attempt to develop a cheaper alternative to motor oil. Which is why the chemical bastardizations were not that big a deal.

DC allowed food makers to use chemical oils in foods *only* for WWII, but as vegetable oils became cheaper to use than expeller-pressed or animal fats, that permit became open-ended.

Chemically-treated vegetable oils are not food.

So, I'm on board with MAHA.

This is correct. Went Keto in 2019 and dropped 50 lbs in 8 mos.

I consume almost no carbs during the day, but if I eat too much protein or drink too much hard liquor, my weight will climb as my body converts those to sugars.

What's too much? Well, it's really more about not getting enough fat. Sometimes I'll go through a case of porkrinds in a week and watch 5 lbs melt back off.

Having changed nothing else, clearly not giving my body fat to burn means it will create its own carbs (sugars) if it needs what I won't provide.

You are NOT what you eat. Your body is an incredible machine capable of all kinds of chemical miracles.

As Elon Musk has pointed out one of the grave.
Existential problems of almost all countries right now is population decline. We need more citizens having babies but the type of people who use IVF (single moms, homosexual men) are not necessarily the people we want to encourage to have babies.

Elevating the stutus of mothers who have multiple children within a marriage would be a better, less costlyvway to solve the problem.

Seen a few studies on it. The most important thing to avoid is "seed oils", or any vegetable oil not out of a press (so olive oil, avocado oil are expected to be fine).

Seed oils create fat that it stresses your body to burn, so unless you have enough antioxidants, your sells end up ordering up glucose and you get the sugar tooth effect.

Seed oils will cause more consumption of sugar. So, they are twice as bad.

327 No, if you consume too many calories, in theory, even protein would be converted into adipocyte tissue (fat cells).

Ya gotta get both protein and fat. That's why all those hydrogenated chemistry set fats were invented. Wartime shortages led to starvation.

A person can easily eat 15 pounds of lean elk or deer a day, and guess what - without anything else, still be ravenously hungry, weak, and get sick as hell, because it is so lean. This is very common in survival situations over time.

Don't overlook the importance of fats in your "prepping", if you don't understand this.

As an anecdotal story about the power of animal protein and fats I will tell you about my son. He was born fairly early, doctors said he would miss most of his milestones and be behind in most things at his 6 month check up.

I researched my ass off and came to the conclusion that animal products, red meat specifically, seemed like the key. Well it was. At his next check up the nurse thought we brought a different kid in, when the doctors saw his chart he didn’t believe it and measured himself.

Animal protein and fat is the key to health and development.

So the issue with seed oils is confusing and the empirical evidence is not panning out to show this. There is a lot of noise around the ratio of omega 6 and omega 3s, both essential. There is also a lot of hullabaloo over inflammation, etc. the problem is, if you look at the studies, the food used were all highly processed and highly sugared plus seed oils, which hardly seems conclusive for anything except highly processed, highly sugared foods are no bueno.

We can get into Linoleic acid and arachidonic acid if you want, but arachidonic acid is a by product of many foods, not just seed oils.

349 "Make a sandwich with a single slice of bread, it works. So easy."

I make "keto bread" with a bread maker. Pretty good, not sure on carb/fat per slice. Toasted is even better. But I haven't made it in a few months.

Many swear by the carnivore diet, idk. I take a bunch of supplements, but about a half or fourth of the "recommended" amount. Also do some broccoli once in a while, and some fiber pills. BP is still on the high side though.
