Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Hollywood Bust: Technicians, Craftsmen, and Below-the-Line Workers Being Laid Off in DrovesBefore getting to that, Strong and Diverse Plank of Zero-Charisma Wood Amandla (Amandla, lol) Stenberg has some Thoughts about why her piece-of-shit garbage-fire show failed so badly: The Acolyte star Amandla Stenberg revealed that she is "not surprised" that the Disney+ series set in the Star Wars universe was canceled after one season following the "vitriol, prejudice, hatred and fateful language" that the cast received from internet trolls since the series was announced and through its cancelation earlier this month. Stenberg had dual roles in The Acolyte, as twins Osha and Mae, who fall on opposite sides of The Force. The actress spoke out on her Instagram Stories on Wednesday night about her experience with fans, whose relentless vitriol made her feel compelled to respond to, as she says, "honor my value system."One of the most important skills needed to improve and succeed is the ability to take criticism, evaluate it as either valid or invalid, and then adjust one's performance and improve oneself as needed to improve. DEI mandates that no criticism of any Privileged Minority is ever valid, and thus they never feel the need to improve. It's one thing for a talentless actress like Amandla Stenberg to sleepwalk through yet another crap piece of Disney Star Wars "content." The real problem is with DEI "doctors" who think it's racist that you expected them to know that this medicine could cause potentially-fatal allergic reaction, or this DEI engineer who thinks it's sexist to expect her to accurate calculate the maximum load of a bridge's supports. On to the layoffs. Much of the slump in Hollywood has nothing to do with politics. Studios and streaming services overpaid and overproduced "content" to fill their streaming start-ups with. It was never sustainable for these companies to spend literally billions on streaming "content." It was all a loss-leader -- they all overspent to attempt to be one of the two or three companies that survived the Streaming Wars. All that had to end eventually. Hollywood also bet big on the idea that if it produced expensive IP exploitation films crammed with CGI, they would spend $200 million to make a movie, but be virtually guaranteed to make $500 million to a billion plus. This bet has turned very sour over the past few years. People are no longer impressed by CGI and are sick of the simplistic, shallow, machine-like stories that are told by almost all CGI-driven movies. So that was also a crash that was bound to arrive sooner than later. That said, the fact that half the country loathes Hollywood and wishes to boycott them doesn't help. LA Times: It's a Summer of Layoffs in Hollywood. I'm very happy I cut the cord. I recommend it to everyone. Cutting the cord is like shedding thirty pounds overnight. Unfortunately, it's the more blue collar workers -- who are not nearly as left-looney as the higher-paid actors and soulless producers -- who are bearing the brunt of the recession. I'm not happy about innocent people losing their jobs, but there's no other way to teach the higher-ups a lesson. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

It's too bad Musk isn't interested in obliterating Hollywood.
Plenty of non-woke artists, writers, actors and such that could easily replace the crap that currently infests our mainstream entertainment. The market for all entertainment is so oversaturated with content, there's simply no way for anyone to process it all or for any one IP to gain the fan followings of the past.
Hollywood has been coasting for a long time on the established IPs like Harry Potter, Star Wars, and the MCU. Now people are going elsewhere for entertainment because they realize Sturgeon's Law is a real thing: 90% of everything is crap. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at August 30, 2024 04:10 PM (7fElN) 23

🚨#BREAKING: A False Active Shooter Scare at Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Causes Mass panic and Stampedes After Fight broke out as Multiple Balloons began popping 📌#Orlando | #Florida Earlier this evening at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida, numerous people ran for their lives and took shelter, causing a stampede and chaos after rumors spread of a shooting or active shooter situation. According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the panic started with a fight, followed by a ‘popping’ noise possibly a balloon exploding—which led to mass panic and people running. It is unclear where the reported fight occurred, whether anyone was hurt in that fight, or if anyone was injured during the ensuing chaos. This is how the active shooter rumor began. Authorities have confirmed there is no active shooter and there’s no threat to the public. ==== Walz claims he carried a balloon in anger in Italy during his service. Ach, of Tinseltown, what can Werner say? A brief period immersed in its despair inevitably reveals that history shows again and again how nature points out the folly of men. Wait, this the Blue Oyster Cult. Werner likes their judicious use of the cow's bell, but we must be honest, they are not The Beastie Boys. Werner shall not sleep until Brooklyn in solidarity with MCA of blessed memory.
But it was of Hollywood I wished to speak, or, more specifically, of George Lucas. Werner had been summoned to perform an intervention when it became apparent he intended to include the Jonas Brothers in the second of the prequel films. It was arduous, made doubly so when it became clear they wanted Wim Wenders. Obviously, it did not succeed, nor did my earnest plea that he cut back (heh) on the severed limbs motif in the cinematic galaxy fair, fair away. George, said Werner, you know of Tarantino and his proclivities, think what people may conclude by your continuing carnage of limbs. This is not a good look, mein Herr. And Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the sequel to the movie made almost 40 years ago, is tracking to make $100 million next weekend. They keep doing it because people keep showing up. There was a time when Hollywood knew that sequels meant diminishing returns, not instant huge opening weekends.
------------------ Is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice a bad thing? Is it not apolitical and entertaining? There are plenty of sequels that are fun or even downright good. Given how you can count on the fingers of one hand the number of movies made each year that are both entertaining and not woke, I'm all for one that fits the bill, even if it's not completely original... Politics & culture are way more important than originality now... But maybe it is deceptively woke...? I saw American Fiction on a flight a couple weeks ago. Good fun. They had to throw in some kowtows to the woke alter but I wonder if that was in true belief or it's own satire to get the movie made. It was still fun and skewering white guilt / the moral superiority of liberals... Posted by: bearski at August 30, 2024 04:40 PM (Bhsk7) 164

Sometimes wife and I will watch some TV on streaming.
My hobby right now is watching my movies on DVD & Blu-Ray, following an actor from one to the next. My rules are: no rewatching the same one twice (accidentally messed up on that one a couple of times), and do not use the same actor in two consecutive films. I am currently at 179 out of about 450. Kinda fun, really. Might get more difficult the further in I go. Posted by: Pug Mahon, Flightless Icky Weirdo at August 30, 2024 04:46 PM (Ad8y9) 184

I feel a little bad for the layoffs.
And then I think - white conservative Christians/Catholics were unemployable in Hollywood, so this doesn't really effect me. If religious media/movie makers were having layoffs, I'd care more... As of now, this seems like a total "these folks got what they had coming" - they made stuff for liberals and cut out 1/2 of America, thus losing 1/2 their revenue, and now face huge cuts b/c of that (and b/c our side always paid more than 1/2, b/c we tended to steal less and have more money)... Thing I’ve noticed recently in online discourse is that defenders of this shit have started to subtly switch their tactics.
The line they sometimes take is “well of course as a piece of media, it’s got its flaws, but it’s just such a shame that we can’t actually talk about the artistic issues because of all the hate.” Which is convenient because the “hate” is just what they labeled the legitimate criticism we were making 5 minutes ago, and they’re trying to gaslight us into the belief that they were actually the ones making the legitimate criticism and not us. Existing in America really feels like being in an abusive relationship lately. Posted by: Joe, living dangerously at August 30, 2024 04:52 PM (B9Prs) 208

Let's not discount that AI will make Hollywood irrelevant in 5 years.
I've seen some AI stuff now that is already too good of quality. The hyper-capitalists (and they are the most ruthless of capitalist there in the hills of L.A.) that run Hollywood know this and were trying to lock up image and likeness rights in perpetuity. But, that was never going to save them. Why pay for a movie to star a likeness of a real-world "beautiful person" when AI can give you any number of beautiful people for free? And big name stars don't have near the draw they used to. Look at all the turds in the last year that have starred big names. Story > star > set. Hollywood reversed that order in the last 20 years. Ja, here we go. George, impervious to all attempts to salvage his integrity as an artist, told me Vern (they are stuck on this, I cannot dissuade them in their pronunciation) my work has increased in its value thanks to my colleague here. He indicated a woman to our left. Her name is Kathleen Kennedy. The coffee chick, George, seriously, I inquired. At this Frau Kathleen said, I'm George's ideas person. Perhaps, I suggested, you might develop ideas over this weak-ass Folgers dreck you are serving.
No, really Vern, George insisted. She holds the Holy Grail of what Star Wars can be. At this, the two exchanged glances, and Kathleen the Coffee Slayer opened the door, revealing two women in odd garb. And this is Hollywood, remember. Werner has seen things. I present to you, Frau Kathleen intoned, that which the fans most desire - lesbian space witches. They shall conceive a child. Aghast, I prevailed upon George to join me on tour with hip-hop collective Wu Tang Clan, that he might be cleansed and develop rizz. Alas, no. Ghost-Faced Killah later told me we had dodged a bullet, and I agreed. Werner tried, but a man must desire his salvation. Ach. Imagine a remake of Dirty Harry now but without any woke BS. It would make millions.

239. I actually used that with ATT via phone. "Well we cant cancel because you don't have the passcode". Me "well dad is dead and his account will be closed soon, I am just trying to do the right thing instead of waiting until you cancel for non-payment". Pause, "OH, sorry, you'll have to take the death cert to an ATT store to cancel". And I got it dragged out of them that the account was still listed as under my mom's name.

Can't imagine anything that would bring me back to a movie theater.
--- Yup. We're in the last days of the movie theater. It's really sad to me. I worked a few years in a theater, from the door guy up to projectionist. Nothing at home can compare the the quality of film or the experience. It's all digital now. But watching a movie film, a big bucket of popcorn, giant soda, candy and a hot dog will always be a favorite memory. The best movie you could have ever seen was wide-screen format on film at the drive-in. That was the closest you could get to full life-quality recreation of what was filmed. Wife and I also enjoy watching Looney Tunes. We have the entire collection on DVD. It's fun as hell. Some of the older ones are just weird, but you have all the classics, like the one with the big mean dog and the teeny kitten. Doggie thinks kitten was thrown in the oven in a pie at one point.
Magnificent animation. the doggie is heartbroken, and it's heart-wrenching. Good news, kitteh is fine. Whew! Posted by: Pug Mahon, Telling War Stories at August 30, 2024 05:06 PM (Ad8y9) 259

Musk announced yesterday that Starlink would stay up at no charge to users, because schools in Brazil depend on it as a media resource. Until de Moraes shuts it down, that is.

erner, what do you think about my idea for a movie about actors that have to build their own sets and make their own costumes, in which they make a movie about actors that have to build their own sets and make their own costumes?
I'm thinking they should have to make there own sound effects too. Or would that be asking too much? Posted by: fd Ach, one can never ask too much of the cinematic Muse. Certainly she does not hesitate on her part. Your idea has its appeal - we might call it Infinite Recursion, and the critics would love it. Also, the actors would be significantly confused, which is quite entertaining to observe. Once, on the set of Nosferatu, I insisted that Klaus Kinski must lose any reflection in a mirror (Vamps, ja?) and told him to keep checking if it was working. This was merriment. We got a lot of mileage out of that, as we did when we required Klaus to operate a hula hoop while filming Aguirre. Ja, that was the best. Posted by: People's Hippo Voice at August 30, 2024 05:06 PM (k7oKo) ——— Same. I spent a lot of time and money building a home theater. It looks and sounds better than anything in the theater. Plus: no hassle, can watch when I want, the girls are impressed, etc. The experience is so far superior to going to a theater it’s like jerking off vs real sex. I don't feel a bit sorry for these people. Stupidity needs to be painful.
I walked by their houses in Burbank, Pasadena, South Pasadena, Highland Park, etc etc with all the causes of the day on display... "We Support BLM", "We Support The Science", on and on and on. They were on the periphery of Hollywood but felt they were in the stratospheric orbit by association. The stars don't give a shit about them. They are basically the truck drivers of Hollywood are are now tossed to the side like so much trash. Their political purpose has been spent. Who votes for Adam "Pencil Neck" Schiff? Performers, Writers, directors, producers, sure. But set building guy making $40k/year? Busted knuckles, splinters, clothes with paint stains, what's Schiff done for him? More like TO him, really. The nuts and bolts guys that make Hollywood look like Old West, Victorian England, or Outer Freaking Space have to out number those other guys, right? Dry cleaners? Food truck operator? Set Guy probably waits for his CA ballot to come in the mail because he can't find time on election day to vote in person. Ballot never shows up, and Schiff goes on to another term.

This is worth noting: Paramount could have sold their library at WILDLY inflated prices in an environment where everyone was overpaying for content.
Instead, they decided to try to be one of the streamers. Idiots. I rank their management team right up there with Sears, and Montgomery Ward. Posted by: Steve O at September 01, 2024 12:49 AM (iY2C2) Processing 0.04, elapsed 0.0563 seconds. |
