Lawmakers in California could soon make the Golden State the first in the country to make undocumented immigrants eligible for up to $150,000 in state-supported home loans. The Democratic supermajority in the California state legislature is likely to pass a measure this week that would make undocumented immigrants eligible for the "California Dream for All" loan program, a state-funded program that provides 20% in down payment assistance up to $150,000, according to a report for Politico. Participants in the program must be first-time homebuyers, and at least one must be a first-generation homebuyer, while income levels must be below certain limits depending on the county where the recipient lives. The measure comes amid the backdrop of a national election in which immigration has taken center stage, the report notes, with the Trump campaign attempting to tie Vice President Kamala Harris to Biden administration border policies that have proven unpopular with voters. California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has been one of President Biden's and now Harris' top surrogates on the campaign trail, has not said whether he will sign the bill into law if it clears the legislature before the Aug. 31 deadline.

So this is an example of yet another White Wing blogger, raging in his basement as he misconstrues everything about a program designed to help our people. It isn't for "illegal aliens." Setting aside that deeply problematic and othering language, this is a general program run by the State of California to help its residents. All they are doing is modifying the acceptance criteria to help those who live in California achieve the American Dream in California.
He also leaves out various conditions for the loan. This is a hand up, not a hand out. The loan is in fact repayable. It is repaid when the property is sold later. The loan is also not "free." A piece of the property's appreciation is remitted to the state when the loan is repaid.
What we have here is a sensible, safe program to promote California's greater social good, which is structured to give both the buyer and the state an interest in the property. This is how you build stable communities and help everyone at once.

I live in Alabama and we are not the designation of choice for illegals for a lot of reasons, but even here, we had a young child killed by a drunk driver who shouldn’t be here (don’t get me started on her mom) and just yesterday, a dispute was resolved by one cutting the other’s neck.

Unless he has a policy proposal in mind to deal with places like CA and WA who do this crap - like cutting *all* federal funding to "sanctuary" jurisdictions altogether, or punitive measures for spending taxpayer money on illegals - he should just leave it at a simple comment that it's all bullshit.

Yes, but car loans are a different animal. Many of the low-income, high-risk loans are private lender's money, often the dealer's own money. That's how it was done when I was in the car business. There are no restrictions on that kind of lending.

Another wrinkle is that Prop 13 freezes what the property tax is from when you bought the house and rate increases due to value are limited. Getting an old property into a sale means a big kick in the tax assessment.

It *might* clear hedge funds' and investment firms' backlog of underwater properties that they bought when there was zero interest, and now they can't move and are having trouble paying that interest and taxes.
Imagine, BlackRock bought up a quarter of a city and has all these houses they can't move and can't rent at what they need to get.
They "sell" the houses, the houses go into arrears, the taxes don't get paid and then they go on the block, eventually, it is now a business loss, and they have a new assessment for the investment. I am sure I am wrong somewhere, but let me know where so I can do this again.

No, it's a normal mortgage. I said to assume no repayment so I wouldn't have to go do the amortization over some period of time for a hypothetical example. The structure is no different as far as the mortgage lender is concerned.

I haven't seen that the bill also expands *funding* for the program, which means the program will remain essentially the same size that it is today. The only difference is that illegals are suddenly able to qualify for it, which will crowd out non-illegals.
It could, however, cause a shift in allocation within the state. Instead of being largely for Coastal California, access by illegals could move more payments to Interior California (illegals in agricultural labor, for example), which could cause some local distortions. Overall, though, I doubt it will move the needle any more than the original program already has.

You left out that Detroit is getting sued over it. State law prohibits what the Dems did there but the RNC is at least proactive enough to sue well before the election day. You left out that Detroit is getting sued over it. State law prohibits what the Dems did there but the RNC is at least proactive enough to sue well before the election day. The problem with what the Dems did is that Kamala never got to define herself with voters even at the DNC. Thus, the devastating ads that Trump is hitting her with and her basement campaign relying on media to defend her is not apparently working.

Wondering if Detroit is balking because they have had very few Repub election inspectors in the past. But, with 2020 cheating visibility, many more Repub election inspectors have now signed up, and they aren't used to that. An unintended consequence, so to speak.

Perhaps what I'm missing is that banks only need 10% in reserve, so they can write a check for $400K with only the 20% down payment in reserve ... the rest is they hold the note. So as long as the home holds its value, they come out OK.
