Five People, Including a Personal Assistant and Two Doctors, Arrested in Connection With Matthew Perry's Overdose Death

I don't know if there's any grist here for the political mill.

A prosecutor says five people have been charged in connection with Matthew Perry's death from a ketamine overdose last year, including the actor's assistant and two doctors.
U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada announced the charges Thursday, saying the doctors supplied Perry with a large amount of ketamine and even wondered in a text message how much the former "Friends" star would be willing to pay.
"These defendants took advantage of Mr. Perry's addiction issues to enrich themselves. They knew what they were doing was wrong," Estrada said.
Perry died in October due to a ketamine overdose and received several injections of the drug on the day he died from his live-in personal assistant. The assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, is the one who found Perry dead later that day.
The actor went to the two charged doctors in desperation after his regular doctors refused to give him ketamine in the amounts he wanted. DEA Administrator Anne Milgram said in one instance the actor paid $2,000 for a vial of ketamine that cost one of the physicians about $12.

Two of the people, including one of the doctors charged, were arrested Thursday, Estrada said. Two of the defendants, including Iwamasa, have pleaded guilty to charges already, and a third person has agreed to plead guilty.

The other person arrested Thursday is Jasveen Sangha, who prosecutors described as a drug dealer known as the "ketamine queen." Ketamine supplied by Sangha caused Perry's death, authorities said.

A San Diego physician, Dr. Mark Chavez, has agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to distribute ketamine. Prosecutors allege Chavez funneled ketamine to Plasencia, securing some of the drug from a wholesale distributor through a fraudulent prescription.

Perry's autopsy, released in December, found that the amount of ketamine in his blood was in the range used for general anesthesia during surgery.

He was undergoing "ketamine infusion therapy." I'm not sure for what. Ketamine is sometimes used for depression or chronic pain. I don't know if any of this was legit or Perry just googling "ways to get ketamine legally."

In any event, the ketamine infusion was not a big enough dose, or a recent enough does, to explain the massive, lethal dose he had in his bod.

Ketamine was listed as the primary cause of death, which was ruled an accident with no foul play suspected, the report said. Drowning and other medical issues were contributing factors, the coroner said.

"Drowning... was a contributing factor in his death" is an odd sentence.

Two things I never understand:

Celebrity millionaires who become drug addicts. As I think Dennis Miller once said, these people are rich enough to be able to pay people to act out their hallucinations for them. Why bother with drugs?

Doctors who turn drug dealer. Doctors are pretty rich. Yes, I guess it's nice to take $2000 bucks, tax-free, for each $12 dose of ketamine you sell to an addict.

But... risk-reward, man. That addict will eventually kill himself, and then you'll be prosecuted. And lose your medical license.

r are addicts themselves. Or gamble or invested in some shitty business that went under. And they need money. Besides a GP makes decent money but not fuck you money. I think a GP makes $250k on average. Which is nice but still an extra $2k doesn’t hurt. These doctors weren’t specialists from the sound of it.

Hence why surgeons always want to do surgery: it's not just because that's what they know how to do, but that's how they make money. They don't make nearly as much for a patient they prescribe therapy to as they do off surgery.

And a 'bad' doctor, yeah, SOL. Drug dealing ain't far afield for them...

If ketamine is a general anesthetic For surgery, why is it available outside of a hospital setting? No doctor is doing general surgery in his office. No doctor is going to do gallbladder surgery or an appendectomy in an office setting.

I think envy is a big factor. They see these ultra wealthy celebrities with money, women, fame,... and figure they can make themselves bigger by making their dupes smaller. Nothing smaller than a drug addict desperate for a fix.

Actor in some mediocre '90s sitcom... "Buddies" or "Pals" or something like that. It was quite popular for some reason. Not worth reruns like Seinfeld or Gilligan's Island. He never had residuals or another job. Could not Code or Uber.

I have an idea these celebrity doctors who keep their "patients" happy get into a position where they can't get hired elsewhere. Probably get referrals by word of mouth, they don't publish papers, don't have institutional associations, aren't in practices with other highly respected doctors, in short, no c.v.

Just my guess. Maybe nurse ratched knows about doctors who care for low-lifes on the down-low.

139 Welp... We delivered our girl down to college today. Vincennes University is a nice small two year college. It's the oldest college in Indiana. She has a ground floor room that's very close to the bathroom/showers. Close proximity to the class buildings for all of her classes. Her roommate will arrive on campus tomorrow. She was a little nervous as time came for Hubbymayhem and I to leave but I checked on her after we got home and she sounds fine. Even wandered the campus a bit. She has her car there and it's an easy one hour drive home.

The cat is not pleased that her girl didn't come back with us. Poor kitty.

Anyway: nobody ever starts drugs thinking they’ll end up as junkies. Never. They always think “oh I’ll just try it, no big deal.” It always starts off small. Then gets incrementally larger. The user never even really realizes they’re hooked until it’s too late. And once hooked, it’s very very hard to get clean. Almost impossible.

Back when we lived in Kentucky they had people that would drive buses filled with meth heads to doctors they knew that would give them pain pill prescriptions. Once they got their pills they would hand them over to the driver and he would give them cash.

One of them that was doing fraudulent SS disability claims got busted and he fled to South America but later got arrested and brought back to the US to stand trial. His name was eric conn and he had hundreds of people get fake SS disability claims and tons of pain pills based on those claims. He is still in jail.

I ran into one of his minions at a VFW convention and he was a slime ball.

So many fentanyl od’s happen when the person used some other recreational drug, or what they think is a prescription drug ( remember the adderall shortage at pharmacies after Covid?) but it’s been laced with too much fentanyl.

About 6 months ago the local Denver news reported that at least 60% of street drugs contain fentanyl. All drugs, not any kinds in particular. Russian roulette where more than half the gun’s chambers have a bullet.

When you are forced to work for other people all the time, the joy of it palls quickly.Adding in impending dementia, Parkinsons, and depression are enough to drive a person to suicide.

I know little of his personal relationships which would always be difficult anyway with stardom, drugs, and etc. Instability in families is pretty horrific to the kids in those marriages and doesn't really help the other people. I am merely remarking on the man, not whether he was a moral paragon to those around it. Pretty clear way back it was not so.

Williams was never parading around like Norman Lear trying to take away my rights via his vile organization so Williams never bothered me. Same with Perry.

You can like him all you want. I find him and his shows awful and low in entertainment value. I don't mistake my opinions on entertainment as fact. Simply the way that I feel.

Almost all celebrities, I simply don't care that much about them nor their lives. You have to work your way up to being an obnoxious asshole to make me care. Lear and Reiner cared enough to put in the work to make me dislike them and everything they did in response.

Yes, that's what I meant in my reply to whig. Regardless of the creator's intent, some characters just take on a life of their own which may contradict that intent.

Not to elevate Lear too much with this comparison, but Shakespeare and Dickens are replete with such exmples.

Actually as I understand it, prosecutions and lost medical licenses are pretty rare. Those punitive measures generally have to go through the local medical licensing boards, where most of the members engage in the same activity.
