Pro-Hamas Protesters Raid Kamala Harris Event

A hastily organized rally supporting Vice President Kamala Harris descended into chaos after anti-Israel protesters infiltrated the Big Apple event -- and later barged into an afterparty venue, causing several thousand dollars' worth of damage to its outdoor space.
Several demonstrators against Israel's military campaign in Gaza were booted from the Democratic gathering in Harlem, where Mayor Eric Adams gave an impassioned speech.
"Make sure you vote," Hizzoner chanted as the disrupters were dragged from the tiny venue in Upper Manhattan.
Adams stood with other prominent elected state Democrats, including City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams (who is not related to the mayor) and Gov. Kathy Hochul, as he endorsed the party's presidential ticket.

While protesters were escorted out of the main rally, which sources said wasn't attended by Harris or her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the demonstration took an ugly turn in front of a restaurant where up to 25 attendees stopped afterward.
The angry mob of around 50 protesters even stormed into the restaurant Bird in Hand at Broadway and West 146th Street as stunned patrons looked on, according to footage from the scene.
Other videos showed cops taking rabble-rousers into custody as a crowd circled the police. Whistles and horns sounded, and smoke bombs were also set off during the brouhaha.
One protester appeared to try to swipe at cops with a cardboard sign, leading several officers to grab the demonstrator and arrest her on the sidewalk, more footage showed.
At another point, authorities chased after another on Broadway during a brief encounter. "Free Gaza" was also graffitied on a police car, and an anti-Israel poster with the words "No Votes For Bombala's Genocide" was briefly plastered on a restaurant window.
At least 14 people were taken into custody, according to police.
Bird in Hand owner Brian Felicetta told The Post he estimated damages to the restaurant's outdoor seating area were at least a few thousand dollars. He will have a better idea Thursday when he surveys the aftermath.

Toho is finally opening the gates on 4K restorations of some of their most important catalogue titles to the West.

Criterion just announced 4K re-releases of Seven Samurai and the original Godzilla.

These 4K masters have existed for about 2 years. Japan has had home video releases of both (along with a handful of other Kurosawa films like High and Low) for about a year, but finally America can get them with English subtitles.

I'm less enthused than I thought I would be since I don't like the original Godzilla and I feel little need to upgrade my already very nice Blu of Seven Samurai, but still...hopefully it just means more is coming soon.

I have the Showa-era Godzilla boxed set in blu-ray. I think that's also Criterion. I think even blu-ray was the limit to what can be done with 50+ year old film, which wasn't the greatest quality to begin with.

4K is a very high-rez video format. Blu-ray is 1920 x 1080 pixels. 4K is 3840 x 2160. But if the original source material isn't very high quality itself, you won't see any improvement going from BR to 4K and possibly a decline.

I also don't like the gamma curve on most 4K discs. You can adjust the curve on BR sources if your receiver supports it. But for 4K, the gamma is built-in and can't be changed.

The 4K discs also have so much storage space that they usually also have higher-quality audio (atmos, DTSX, etc).

Depends on the quality of the master and transfer. Some are indeed crap. You also need at least true 4K all the way from the disc player to the TV. If your receiver or TV isn't capable of playing native 4K, then the quality will suffer from the downsampling.

Also, because of the higher rez, the 4K picture is more susceptible to proper picture settings. Turn OFF all digital enhancements, sharpness increases, auto-this and auto-that. Just play the source output without any additions or subtractions.

I admit that HDR is something of a mixed bag in general. It actually works best on black and white films (get that shadow detail in here!), but it's often something like a weird trick to blow out whites unnecessarily (gotta hit a million nits, or something).

Also, I hear that Dolby Vision is actually a much better way to filter the colors. The disc/source has to be configured for it, but those that are come out very nice...or so I've heard. My TV and player don't do it.

HDR is a metalayer on top of the original image, so the brightening effects on colors will go away, but the fine detail of the underlying image should remain.

That could be called "washing out" the image, but it wouldn't be at the levels of what anyone would actually call "washing out" an image in real life.
