Paramount Studios Begins Long, Painful, Hilarious Process of Laying Off 15% of Its Employees

Learn to code.

Paramount Global was to begin laying off 15% of its workforce in the U.S. starting Tuesday as part of its planned job cuts, the media giant said in an internal memo.

Paramount, which owns networks like CBS, MTV, and Comedy Central, aims to reduce annual costs by $500 million and return to profitable growth before its merger with David Ellison's Skydance Media.

In an internal memo, Paramount's co-CEOs said the company is at an "inflection point" where changes are necessary to strengthen the business.

The layoffs, which were announced during a post-earnings call last week, are expected to affect about 2,000 people....

The restructuring comes as the New York-based company navigates a challenging linear TV market, having recently written down the value of its cable networks by nearly $6 billion.

They also own Pluto and Paramount+. Supposedly they hit profitability on their streaming operations for the first time. I assume most of that was for Pluto. I don't hear people talking about Paramount+ much, though they have... Yellowstone? Is that right?

Anyway, they've continually ruined their most valuable IP, Star Trek, and made it Star-Wars-level, and I don't mean that in a good way.

The latest girlboss video game movie bombed. Borderlands has not one but two Girls Who Are the Key to Everything.

Plus Jack Black being " " " funny. " " "

Speaking of Busty Woke Frankenstein Jamie Lee Curtis:

Jamie Lee Curtis revealed on Kevin Hart's SiriusXM podcast "Gold Minds" (via Entertainment Weekly) that she asks film crews to wear name tags so that everyone remains equal on her film and television sets. The Oscar winner and current Emmy nominee for "The Bear" said that her aim is to dispel the "hierarchy" that inherently exists on sets between actors and the crew since everyone already knows the actors' names in most cases.

"There's something really uneven about our position on a set, on a movie, in this arena," Curtis told Hart. "You guys know our names, we don't know yours. There's something inequitable to me about that...On a movie set, if we were all working together, we would all be wearing name tags so that tomorrow when we came in, I would be able to then say 'good morning [Sabine]' without even [...] thought because I've learned her name."

Oh shut up you batwanger ding-dong.

You've just created a new inequality: You're making professionals, who aren't actors, wear name-tags like they work at Target.

I'm sure the actors and rich people ain't wearing name-tags.

Stuff your "equity," you moron.

To the point where some people are wondering if it's intentional.

The Oscar winner and current Emmy nominee for "The Bear" said that her aim is to dispel the "hierarchy" that inherently exists on sets between actors and the crew since everyone already knows the actors' names in most cases.

Season 1 was a show about a plucky group of misfits struggling to stay afloat at a sandwich shop.

Season 3 was them trying to get a Michelin Star.

- Shoot Me in the Face; you shoot a kid in the face 'cause he asked you to.
- Kill Yourself - you jump off a diving board into lava. Or not. Jack dares you to.
- there's another where you crush a guy inside a car in a car crusher.
- another where you get medicine to a town of folks who can't live without it.
-then you later launch artillery at one of the jerks in that town and kill him.
--and another where you deliver body parts for a doctor.

It was never movie material.

They’d also be saving “benefits” if they’re paying that so whatever that number is (I don’t know entertainment industry practices). I’m sure they’re gonna have to cut back elsewhere, perhaps production costs. Who knows? I guessing very few execs making upwards of $400K will be leaving there any time soon. 254 I've had the misfortune of working with some programmers after they spent several years at Boeing. Every single one of them had terrible coding practice and refused to adopt good practices. 260 The Bear is like Drama for Retards.

Every single minute of the show is occupied by some character telling you their exact thoughts and feels and wishes and dreams and what they want to do. Which they repeat several times in case you're3 too retarded to get it the first time.

Even the guys. No! Make that especially the guys. They all sound like weepy, overdramatic 13 year old girls when they're not sounding like angry, overdramatic 13 year old girls.

Just the worst. It's the kind of show that probably makes Borderlands look like Shakespeare.

No human male ever behaved in this way. Wedgies and swirlies for all the characters. Stat!

My DIL is a dead ringer for that robot chick. I don't even want to think about it. Extra fun, actress's real name was Brigitte Schittenhelm. They Schortened it.

353 The only reason Pluto is profitable is because every availability is filled with political ads from Harris & other PACs promoting her.
In November, Pluto will go back to SFDR (short form direct response) which pay only when someone calls the 800# and buys the product.

354 Paramount+ has "Tulsa King" which, if you can get past Sly Stallone's freaky plastic surgery face, is pretty good.

Lots of violence, technically they call it a comedy, but it is just a drama that has some funny moments.

I do like Strange New Worlds, and try to ignore the silly stuff from Kurtzman.

356 Speaking of slogs. I finally suffered through Dune, Parts 1 and 2, at the spousal unit's insistence. It confirmed for me that the book is unfilmable as a movie. It's simultaneously better made than the non-Lynch version but without any of the endearing oddness. Nerds, dorks, and other assorted misfits will never be quoting the new ones.

I never even slogged through the book Dune, and I have read reference books from cover to cover.

357 Paramount plus doesn't cost a lot and we can watch Blue Bloods reruns on it. Every now and then there is something good; Joe Pickett and Lioness. Seal Team was OK but girl bosses changed it's focus and it's ending anyway. After the final season of Blue Bloods and especially if the price goes up we're probably dropping it.

358 Seasons 1-4 stream on Peacock. I believe that Paramount sold streaming rights to NBCUniversal before it had its own streaming service. Paramount decided too late that with the massive popularity of Yellowstone they could actually whip up enough content to feed a streaming service and launched Paramount+, which streams the two spin-off series and Season 5.

359 Although I do not agree with Jamie Lee Curtis's politics, I must agree with her perspective on the set. She has a lot going on with her in-character performance and direction that requires her to be successful in appeasing the targeted audience. She is limited by the Hollywood bureaucracy's ignorance by politicizing their audience. Hollywood's bureaucracy is not appeasing the public's interest, but polarizing BS.

360 And the ORANGE hair, with unmoving stupid swoop (Wig? Likely) is just The Last Bad Idea That Makes This Movie Unwatchable!
I think they got the idea of orange from Milla Jovovich in The 5th Element.
I suspect that the reason Blanchett's face doesn't move is that she bought the Save My Dying Career level of Botox.
Hint, Cate - it didn't work.
