The Classical Saturday Morning Coffee Break & Prayer Revival

suburban-men-rise-and-shine-outdoors-camping-hiking-hunting-fishing-20230104-120.jpg

(What an order!?!?!)

*****

Good morning Horde. August keeps rolling along. Chilly morning here, so plenty of coffee to be consumed.

Before we get into what is good for us and our Prayer Revival, just a few housekeeping matters to go over. (Rulz for those of you in Black River Falls)

1. This is an open thread, please feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate.
2. Be nice to one another. And please don't jump on the furniture.
3. Running with sharp objects? You are on your own. Do you feel lucky?
4. Have a nice weekend.

*****

Moron in good standing, Hrothgar, wants you to drink you caffeine. His advice proves he is a giver. Kind of like me.

PHILADELPHIA -- Coffee and tea intake were associated with long-term cognitive changes in older adults, two prospective studies presented at the Alzheimer's Association International Conferenceopens in a new tab or window (AAIC) suggested.

Among 6,001 Health and Retirement Studyopens in a new tab or window participants in the U.S., drinking two or more cups of coffee a day was associated with a 28% lower risk of dementia over 7 years compared with drinking less than one daily cup (P<0.05), reported Changzheng Yuan, ScD, of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston and the Zhejiang University School of Medicine in China, in a poster presented at the meeting.

Thank you Annie for the following:

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

6/15 – Grumpy and Recalcitrant asked for continued prayers for J.J. Sefton of the Morning Report. He is about to begin chemo and radiation therapy.
8/6 Update – J.J.’s final chemo and radiation treatments were on 8/4 and 8/5. There’s a four week wait until the first post-treatment MRI. He’s hoping to regain energy and more of an appetite in that time. Please continue to pray for J.J.’s recovery and restoration to full health.

6/25 – TP asked for prayers for JT, who is ill and in need of prayer.
8/2 Update – JT is in a rehab facility. Prayers are appreciated.

6/29 – bluebell passed along a request from grammie winger, who asked for prayers for her husband, Rev, who is having open heart surgery on 7/8 to take care of his aortic aneurysm. Recovery time is expected to be 6-8 weeks.
8/3 Update – Grammie winger posted that Rev had emergency surgery, and now has a colostomy bag. She said it’s not as fun as it sounds…..

7/18 – Annie’s Stew sends prayers of thanks for God’s protection of President Trump.

7/18 – “Norman Spiny” requested prayers for his lovely wife, Cindy (married 33 years) who passed away on 7/20 due to metastatic breast cancer.

7/20 – Defenestratus asked for prayers for an aunt and uncle. The aunt just passed away after battling her second round of brain cancer. Her first bout was 34 years ago. The uncle has been distraught, and now they found a benign tumor at the base of his skull that is causing a blood vessel to be pinched. This is causing vision issues for him. They have to wait until next month to see if it is operable.

7/20 – barbarausa asked for prayers for her son. He has gone off the deep end again, and just got kicked out of rehab, after being kicked out of his last group home. He is calling her, asking her to come get him, and she cannot. She can’t take care of him, or keep him on his psych meds, or keep him in treatment, or live with the psychotic breaks.

7/21 – Nan in AZ asked for prayers for her doctors and her mom. Nan is in the hospital with possible cardiac issues. Nan’s dad passed away last month, so they are still dealing with that loss.

7/22 – Sponge’s First Lady is home and resting comfortably. The surgery went well and the doctor was pleased. They did remove some lymph nodes that looked suspect, but did not have to remove much mass around the cancer. They will have the results of the tests on the nodes next week. Thank you for the continued prayers as she has only just begun this whole thing.
8/8 Update – One of the lymph nodes had cancer cells in it. She’ll start chemo in a couple of weeks, but for now it will be once a week for 12 weeks, then different meds once every 2 weeks for 4 weeks, then radiation for 5 weeks. They send thanks to all for your support.

7/24 – Pooky’sGirl requested prayers for her SiL, who lost her mother to an MS-related aneurysm a few months ago, just found out that her father has pancreatic cancer.

8/3 – Black Orchid asked for prayers for her usual August blues, from taking the kids back to school/college. They love their schools and are excited to go back, but it can be sad.

8/3 – Our Country is Screwed asked for prayers for his 27 year old daughter. She is having breast cancer surgery in a week. The Mrs. and he will be heading out to be with her.

8/5 – bonhomme posted that her mother-in-law fell and shattered her femur. Her surgery went well, but it’s going to be a long recovery.

8/6 - LMD Outer Banker requested prayers for a son who is undergoing an experimental treatment for chronic Lyme disease, which he has been battling for 25 years. He will be in a clinic abroad for about a month.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.

Prayers up for those that know they need them but
have not asked us for them;

Prayers up for those that need them but don’t know it yet; and

Prayers up for those who pray alone, asking for help in silence, and whose prayers are known but to God!

Prayers up even for all "our" politicians who have apparently decided that the 10% money and power are far more desirable than honor or integrity, may they see the error of their ways and repent!

And lastly, prayers up for former (and hopefully future) President Trump, keep him safe from harm and may the many forces of evil arrayed against him be made ineffective and come to naught!

25 Today is the feast of St Lawrence, deacon & martyr, patron of firefighters.

The story of his martyrdom

In AD 258, Emperor Valerian issued an edict: all bishops, priests and deacons must be put to death. Saint Lawrence, other deacons, and Pope Sixtus II were apprehended. The Pope was killed on 6 August. At first, the emperor offered to spare Lawrence’s life, in exchange for his handing over of “the treasures of the Church.”

Lawrence is said to have presented the emperor with the sick, the needy, and the marginalized. These, he said, are the treasures of the Church.

Four days later, on August 10, Saint Lawrence would be martyred.

How based is that!

28 From last thread:
223 “Depressing Trump supporters is exactly what they are trying to do. Make it seem that Kamala is super popular and demoralize Trump supporters. It's part of the election rigging process.
ODon't fall for it. Trump is winning and I expect his lead will only grow once the ad wars start, the debates happen and we hit Labor Day when people start getting serious about the election.”

X is worth watching because it and Rumble are the only true Free Speech platforms left (which is why Maduro and the UK government hate them.). The Tim Walz choice has been blowing up more and more each day there - absolute scorn poured on Walz from every direction. To say this is a “popular” ticket is madness.

I think it is a reaction to counter-act the Modernist theology that infected the Catholic Church in the 1960s and 1970s. Jesus Christ is more than a non-judgmental hippy.

My home parish still a bunch of grey-hairs that think tambourines and bongo drums are 'hte awesome." We have a new crop of priests that are slowly weening them away from that irreverent behavior.

I imagine that people that want a more orthodox Jewish worship service are going something similar.

37 Good morning! I hope I’ve said this before- but thank you all for the prayers and encouragement. Hard to believe what a difference a year has made (not really, with God). I’m back to the fit, fun, fashionable, fearless, and faithful man I’d been. The pit of despair and despondency is a memory. There is a residual sadness for the now former Mrs. Bob- through the grapevine I’ve heard she’s spiraling again- the major depression she “cured” by abandoning her faith and family is back with a vengeance and she’s on some newish, very expensive anti-depressant (trelliinex?). So please pray for her. I trust God, but I do fear for her when the scales fall from her eyes- it will either be God, showing her and strengthening her to come home (to Him, not me). Or the devil, springing his final surprise it’s going to hurt when it happens, but that’s not my concern, my concern is how she deals with it.

Of course! He knows our hearts better than we do.

But for me, praying in Latin when I can puts me in a different state of mind. I guess knowing that I am saying the same words that have been said for centuries, by an unbroken line of believers, makes me feel like I am participating in an endless prayer chain.

I guess it feels like being part of history in a way?

That mindset was a topic within Father Nathan Cromly's homily at the "Fatima USA" Mass yesterday. Not having God in your life leaves you adrift, and vulnerable to the Evil One. So many people are now pagans and they are not happy.

58 Update for me.

I finished the two week course of nuke it from orbit antibiotics a week ago Thursday last. Felt mostly okay until Wednesday evening, when I got a tickle in the back of my throat which turned into a full blown post nasal drip of Noah's Flood proportions yesterday and last night with a 100° fever thrown in just in case I wasn't appreciating it enough. Had my appointment with the ENT specialist's vomit comit vestibular tube testing chair yesterday and will have an MRI next Friday. Won't know anything about the outcome until the 22nd.

Tinnitus is still turned up to 11, and the vertigo is dialed back somewhat so there's that I guess.

I'll keep you posted if I learn anything sooner.

Our parish has two worship sites due to a consolidation that took place about a decade ago. Despite the union (and the fact that the same priests preside at each location) the "student parish" is still infested with hippies who like bongos and guitars in their worship and scandalously applaud at the end of each Mass.

The "townie parish" has a school and is much more formal in its presentation of the Mass. No one claps.

I normally go to the "townie parish," but due to the current household arrangement, went to the other site for the early Mass, which used to be subdued. It was awful. The Communion Hymn was up-tempo Christian rock, and I'm trying to meditate after receiving Our Lord but they are just belting it out, banging the bongos. I shall have to speak to the priests because this is intolerable.

Mr. Phoenix is a very sick boy. His prognosis is not good at all.

He stopped eating and was vomiting. We took him to the vet and they determined that it was necessary to open him up and see if there was anything there.

What was determined was that he had pythiosis, which is caused by a fungus-like microorganism that causes the growth of granulation tissue and had also invaded his lymph nodes. It was a large growth and blocked his intestine. It was too large for a resection to be done.

We were at the point of telling the vet to let him go while he was under, but we decided to take a chance that medication would help shrink the growth enough for him to undergo a resection to remove it. His odds are very long, though.

Say a prayer or give a thought to our handsome boy. He seemed better this morning, but every day is a day of grace.

That happened last year at my parish too. I threw a $h!t Fit at the Worship Commission meeting. Thankfully, that hasn't happened again. Our priests are making changes (not fast enough for me). Sadly many of the grey-hairs are perplexed and don't grasp why things they have been doing for decades were misguided.

I'm now Chairman of the Worship Committee and am going to set three goals. 1) How do we make Communion more reverent? 2) How do we encourage religious vocations? 3) How do we make the environment within the church building more reverent?

I know the answers but have to get buy-in. I don't have any power; I'm just another member of the laity.

Well, if you're making such a racket that people who want to say prayers while contemplating the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, then that is a reverence propblem.

One of the reasons I became Catholic is the solemnity of the Mass, which provokes contemplation and yes, reverence.

Overall, the parish is moving away from the 1970s look, with abstract images being replaced by icons, etc., but the student parish is where the hippies are making their last stand.

I believe you are Lutheran, correct? I suspect Martin Luther would not have liked bongo drums.

I understand that sensibilities change. A gauge is whether those changes have borne good fruit. In the Catholic Church, bongo drums and Hippy Guitar Masses have not borne good fruit. By any objective standard it was an experiment that has failed.

Church attendance down, vocations down, an increasingly pagan society. The parishes that are re-embracing Sacred Traditions are growing; the parishes that are persisting in the same tired Folk Masses are dying.

146 117 Which is more reverent: a choir singing a polyphonic hymn in Latin, or somebody over-enthusiastically pounding on bongo drums?

You probably don't want to hear my answer to that.
Posted by: grammie winger - cheesehead at August 10, 2024 09:36 AM (SfhV1)

I think both of these can be reverent. That's why there are different kinds of churches. I would absolutely not attend a more modern church with the modern Christian pop-type music, like you find in the mega-churches. But this reaches a lot of people.

I've been to black churches with my ex-husband, where people jump and shout. Definitely a form of reverence.

Posted by: Dash my lace wigs! at August 10, 2024 09:46 AM (OX9vb)

147 The worship team at our former church had a very good drummer (actually, all the musicians were excellent). Whenever we played a song that had a drum solo, he would very competently and joyfully play his part and it always amazed me how he managed to glorify God and not himself. I think it meant his heart was right and he was playing as a gift of himself to God. He was also a very humble person.

I think God is pleased with his offering.

150 I think the main thing is to worship the Lord in the beauty of His holiness, out of the abundant love of the heart. I think one size does not fit all, and cultural expressions can all be accepted by a Holy God if they sincerely proceed from the mouth (and hands) of His children.

Now I'm trying to learn Psalm 121 as well, but my memorizing skills seem to have gone out the window with age. The words keep getting all scrambled (KJV, because poetry). I wonder if this is one reason for chanting, that it aids in memorizing.

Kidding, kind of. I may have a very simplistic view, but I have been to many a black Church service and come out feeling moved, excited, refreshed and my heart and soul filled. I have been to modern churches, and it too can move you, especially when you see many others in the congregation with their honest love and joy on their faces. But a Latin Catholic Christmas Mass? Overall, our parish is moving to greater orthodoxy and solemnity at the Mass. We're being exhorted to receive the Host on the tongue rather than the hand, and kneelers are now in place to facilitate this. A neighboring parish is being remodeled with a Communion rail and my sense is that when Francis passes, the TLM is going to take off.

But the Boomers do like their guitars and bongos.

Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at August 10, 2024 09:56 AM (llXky)

174 I think there's a time and place for both quiet contemplative music and making a racket with the drums in praise. Maybe even with dancing, as David famously did. (Totally agree that Communion is one of the quieter times!)

I have my preferences for worship style but it's not something I quibble over, if the doctrine is sound.

I visited a mainline Protestant church in the Midwest once. They had a wonderful pipe organ, expertly played, and used familiar traditional hymn tunes. However, the lyrics had been updated for a woke audience. On top of that, it was Gay Pride Sunday.

There were a number of purples, but the Biblical one was probably the dye made from the Murex snail, the royal or tyrian purple, that had been cultivated as a dyestuff by the Minoans and later the Phoenicians. There are some other natural purple dyes, but that one was the high status one.
It was more of a reddish purple.
There was also red in cochineal, and madder but those are reddish orangeish colors.

I think they found a fragment of wool cloth in Israel from the early Iron age that was dyed with cochineal

Porphyry would be the most documented, it being the purplish granite prized by the Romans for exclusively Imperial buildings and residences. The famous phrase “to the purple born” was literally “to the Porphyry born.” It was an extremely rare and expensive building stone, which is why they reserved it for themselves.

I only added the Glory Be to my daily prayers a few months ago, and it just seems to take it to a new level. I can't explain it other than perhaps in all this chaos, saying that prayer is profoundly reassuring.

The other prayer I've (finally) memorized is St. Michael the Archangel. At my retirement ceremony from the Guard, I had the chaplain use that for the invocation.

That was actually a bit of a sticky issue. Originally, I was going to have the Wing Chaplain (a Missouri Lutheran) do the invocation and he had a nice Catholic prayer lined up for me. But he was sick, so the gig defaulted to a junior chaplain, who was a Baptist woman. After some negotiation, she agreed to say the St. Michael prayer albeit with a disclaimer lest people think she was a crypto-Papist.

In exchange, she had to begin an end the prayer by invoking the Father and the Son and Holy Spirit, and one of my treasured memories is my youngest kid - who has struggled with her faith - grinning at me as we crossed ourselves.

An old joke form the Presbyterians: a man from another church tradition comes to church one morning. The Choir sings a lovely piece and he jumps up and shouts “Hallelujah!!!” The others stare so he sits back down. The preacher starts his sermon, and after a good point he jumps up and shouts “Amen!” The others stare at him again. He is moved a 3rd time, and shouts “Preach it brother, Preach it!” The Usher finally approaches him and says “sir, for the others here, you’re going to have to contain yourself.” The man replies “But I got the Spirit!!! I got the Spirit.”
The Usher replies sternly, “I don’t care what you got, you didn’t get it here!”

There is an ongoing push to stop that sort of thing, and open discussions about how late one can be to Mass and still validly recieve Communion as well as how one must pause afterward to prayerfully reflect upon it.

The "clappers" as we call them are few in number and growing fewer each year. When I first came to the parish, just about everyone at the student location clapped. Now the young people are abstaining and it's a handful of holdouts. I think the leadership is just waiting them out.

Did you know that Trump is a convicted felon? Did you know that Trump has done many awful things?

The poor guy kept saying "Yes, dear" to all this, and then the AWFL began denouncing him for failing to be sufficiently enthusiastic in his denunciations of Trump.

I had two takeaways: 1) I'm really glad I'm not that guy; and 2) I feel better about our prospects. The AWFL is clearly running scared.

I saw that breakdancing was an Olympic “sport” this time…. So ridiculous. No comparison with the superbly fit athletes in track and field, wrestling and even swimming. I don’t even think golf and tennis should be part of the Olympics. I’ve run 17 marathons myself so I know how hard it is…. And it takes me almost twice as long as the top runners. If I slip in under 4 hours I’m ecstatic…. I’m no Paul Ryan

296 The Singing Nun is remembered (and derided) for the song Dominique, which actually tells a good story if you look up the lyrics. Her real name was Jeanne-Paule Marie "Jeannine" Deckers (also known as Sœur Sourire which is French for 'Smiling Sister') and yes her life ended tragically in suicide.

She also recorded a song I find to be beautiful and inspirational: "Avec Toi" or With You in English. It speaks of traveling with God to reach others for His kingdom.
I plan to start a new chapter next year and spend some number of years as a nomad. I'll be by myself, but I won't be alone.

I can't find a recording of her version in English, but here are the closing lyrics:
With You I will partner till the end of life
By the roads of the entire world
With You I want to leave all of life
On the roads of Eternity
At the threshold of Heaven
You wait for my life
In Your hands, oh my God
I lift my spirit up
With You I want to leave all of life
On the roads of Eternity

She's okay. I chatted with her quite a bit about theology. With the Wing Chaplain sidelined, it was a question of whether I was going to have an invocation at all, because (as she well knew), I don't consider her ministry valid.

So we did a compromise - she could lead the invocation, but also wanted the group to know that the prayer she was about to say was in fact aligned with Protestant sensibilities. In return, she had to go Full Catholic. It was great. I've told my parish priests about it and they love it.

little to eat, lots of malnutrition if not outright starving, no leisure time but lots of working and scavenging to make sure you can eat, collapse of law and order so you spent your nights huddling indoors, poverty, exploitation of your labor, your wife's/husband's labor, your kid's labor, every day a grind to serve Your Betters, Leisure time?
