America Is Back, Baby!: World Exchanges Melt Down on Slowing US Economy

Happy New Week!

I know the interest in Sh3lving Phas3 Thr33, "PROJ3CT OAKTR33" (new name) is intense and intensifying. I wanted to update: A minor part of Phas3, building a minor booksh3lf, has been compl3t3d with minimal damage. I mean, some damage. Obviously. But minor damage.

Bonus damage is a built-in feature of my construction style.

But meanwhile, the main proj3ct has 3xpand3d in ambition, power, and maj3sty: instead of being two double rows of Ikea shelves (that is, two rows of two shelves connected by a GRANHULT connecter), the proj3ct will now be two rows of tripl3 shelv3s, thr33 shelv3s conn3cted by two conn3ctors each, the length of almost the whole wall.

It will be a Sh3lving Paradis3 hitherto undr3am3d!

Plus, I'm putting up special sp3cial 3xtra bonus sh3lf hanging out below the Main Sh3lving Ass3mbly. For vitamins and suppl3m3nts and things of this natur3.

The last pi3ces of this pi3c3 d3 r3sistanc3 will be delivered Thursday, allowing a w33k3nd build. I will try to get most of my work for Friday done on Thursday, allowing liv3 sh3lving updat3s throughout the day!

To be done pre-build:

1. Find and mark the studs
1.a. Pre-preparation: find my stud-finder. Or, find both of them, and then figure out which is the one that actually works. Then finally throw out the one that doesn't work.

2. Find my stupid saw so I can cut these sh3lves to custom l3ngth. I have literally no idea where this could be, which is weird, because it's a saw and isn't easily misplaceable.

3. Figure out which button makes the drill go forward. Alternately, figure out which button makes the drill go backwards and then order special backwards-threaded screws from Chy-na.

So that's my 3conomy, Jack!

But what about the national economy?

Best economy in history, Fat!

The NYT has a sad:

A sell-off in markets around the world turned into a rout on Monday as investors grew panicky about signs of a slowing American economy, with stocks tumbling across Asia and Europe.

The moves were a sharp reversal in the world's major markets, which for much of the past year have risen to new heights, propelled by optimism about cooling inflation, solid labor markets and the promise of artificial intelligence technology.

The declines were especially pronounced in Japan, where fears about the economy added to other concerns about the damage a strengthening yen could do to corporate profits.

The Nikkei 225 index fell 12.4 percent. It was the benchmark index's biggest one-day point decline, larger than the plunge during the Black Monday stock market crash in October 1987. The Topix index, which includes companies that represent a broad swath of Japan's economy, fell 12.2 percent.

The unease spread to Europe, where the Pan-European Stoxx index fell more than 2 percent in early trading, with every major market on the continent recording declines.

American markets are crashing, too.

And analysts are now speaking of the "Sahm rule," a rule that has successfully predicted every recession for the past 54 years.

Stocks plunged on Monday as U.S. recession fears caused turmoil throughout the global markets.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled 1,000 points, while the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 also fell by 5% and 3.7%, respectively.

A weak jobs report and shrinking manufacturing activity in the world's largest economy, coupled with dismal forecasts from the big technology firms, pushed the Nasdaq 100 and Nasdaq Composite into a correction last week.

...

The weak jobs data also triggered what is known as the "Sahm Rule," seen by many as a historically accurate recession indicator.

"The July jobs report is being viewed as a recession warning, and the markets are responding accordingly," said Bill Adams, chief economist at the Dallas-based Comerica Bank.

With the jobless rate unexpectedly rising, the so-called Sahm rule is now in play. Named after former Federal Reserve economist Claudia Sahm, the rule has successfully predicted every recession since 1970.

It stipulates that the economy is in the early stages of a recession when the three-month moving average of the jobless rate is at least a half-percentage point higher than the 12-month low. Over the past three months, the unemployment rate has averaged 4.13%, which is 0.63 percentage points higher than the 3.5% rate recorded in July 2023, crossing that threshold.

Big Wall Street brokerages also revised their Fed rate projections for 2024 to show greater policy easing by the central bank.

So the Fed will begin cutting interest rates to try to stave off the recession. But this, of course, will lead to further rising inflation. High interest rates dampen inflation but also dampen economic growth; low inflation rates spur growth, but also spur inflation.

"The Best Economy In History, Jack!" may now be in the same place as Carter's economy in the seventies, in which there were literally no good moves to make. In a "stagflation" economy, which features the worst of both worlds, low growth and high inflation, you can't cut interest rates to spur growth because that will increase the inflation which is already too high, and you can't raise rates to slow inflation because that will tank an already-weak economy.

A new Rasmussen survey finds that the real unemployment rate is around double what the Regime admits it to be.

And it might be four times more than what the Regime admits.

Rasmussen surveyed nearly 9,000 American adults and found that in July the percentage of Americans who are unemployed and looking for work -- this is the number that the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) should report each month -- was 8.4%. The BLS reported a rosy 4.3% unemployment rate last month, up from June's equally imaginary 4.1%.

...

Nearly one in 10 work for the government at one level or another. Those workers are supported entirely by tax dollars without producing any material wealth. Every government employee involved in regulation makes it harder for the rest of us to do so.

If you've been keeping track of these numbers in your head, you might notice they don't add up to anything close to 100%. About three percent of adults surveyed answered "not sure" about their employment situation, the kind of answer that I assume involves smoking weed. The remaining 9.7% said they were unemployed but not looking -- i.e., "Not in Workforce."

That means the percentage of Americans who could be working and perhaps would really like to be working but either can't find work or have given up finding work is 18.1%. That's more than four times the official unemployment rate.

I've got good news for everyone, though: Kamala's got this. She will direct all of her expertise and skill to solving this insolvable problem.

Bidenomics is working!

At the beginning of August last year, Kamala Harris praised a jobs report as being an example of "Bidenomics" at work. The term was co-opted by the Biden administration as a means of countering what Republicans were saying about the weak economy. Every good bit of news that came out, they took credit for.

"Bidenomics is working," she said at the time, letting the Biden-Harris administration take credit for the economy that month.

*All* of the major indices suffer from this weakness. The Nasdaq is the worst last time I checked, but they all have the problem. We have a handful of companies with stupendous influence on the indices because most firms are lumbering zombies with only a few with real - and stupendous - profits. They carry a *lot* of weight in the indices. Add in the AI bubble and it gets worse.

The small-cap Russel 2000 is a much broader index at a different economic sector, and a sector which is historically a major growth component (midsize enterprise is responsible for a ton of innovation and employment). The Russel is up on a one-month comparison - albeit barely. The five-day comparison, though, is down almost 10%, though trying to rebound as is normal after a major sell-off.

Don't get too caught up in the stock market generally and in the Big Three indices in particular. The top is weird because everything is dislocated.

The unemployment rate is fake. Fed omnipotence is fake. Corporate profits are fake. GDP is fake.

The yield curve is still *deeply* inverted and has been for months on end. That's a recession indicator, too.

We are in a recession. Go subtract the deficit from GDP - nominal, current-dollar terms - and see what happens. Spoiler alert: it's negative a lot of the time. I'm going to continue being on the other side of this one. We *might* - in a nakedly political pandering move - get one tiny cut. But I doubt even that. The Fed is going to try to avoid *raising* rates to be sure, but I doubt we're going to see any meaningful cuts.

The Fed will either defend the dollar or watch the entire world order crash. Historically, the Fed defends the dollar, and Powell is a Fed traditionalist. The next chairman may move this into an "all bets are off" scenario, but right now I'm standing by my assumption.

94 Doom! Gloom! Calamity! Impending Catastrophe! Just thought I'd get that nonsense out of the way so we can move on to actual informational news.

Wall Street is pushing the market down bigly as we speak - to make SURE Needy Amin wins. It's no laughing matter. They're pulling all the stops, and playing for keeps.

First step. Acknowledge the dire straits we are in, definitely don’t minimize it or ridicule others that are blowing the whistle and waving the red flags, our Republic is at stake. Second step. There are options here, but the first step must be completed first.

you can do nothing to change national or global directions. All we can do is work to elect Democrats.

Good thing nobody wants to take a second step until all the hand wringing is complete!

The way I see this race is that it is now Harris’ to lose. The media getting a hold of a nice horse race bone like a slowing economy is more of a concern to me than the actual economic fundamentals themselves.

tRump is loosing his marbles and it is only going to be worse for him. Not sure if he can hold up thru the election.

Japan held its rates at or near 0% for 15 years. As such, investors began borrowing trillions of yen and investing them in stronger currencies and assets. Essentially, it was a bet that the Yen would continue to fall in comparative value. It worked well... until last Wednesday.

Japan's central bank finally hiked rates a bit, just to .25% which is still insanely low, but it spiked the value of the yen by 7.5% compared to the US$ and forced investors to cover their short positions to the tune of billions. Creating enormous losses
(Trillions?)

This was called the "yen carry trade." It appears to have ended this week. To cover those losses it requires liquidity and liquidity is achieved by selling off other performing assets. Hence, the global sell off.

I figured many of you would be wondering why your portfolios are getting hammered. This is why.

One other major bearish force which I think helped to set this off (I haven't seen anyone else discuss this in detail):

Japan imports most of the oil it needs to function. [rest is about an Israel-Iran war affecting oil imports; prices skyrocket etc.]

Which was the average rate during ... the Great Depression.

But think about it, if they jiggered with the inflation calculation so many times that it's useless as an actual measure of real inflation, why would they have not done all that an more to the unemployment rate?

I've long said they are counting significant numbers of workers as "no longer looking"--and not part of the official rate--by fiat, rather than fact.

176 Hi, Ace

WEB Forum org, agenda/2024/01/stability/risks24

But the questions is: Are we prepared for this uncertain world. Signs suggest that we're not addressing the need for risk mitigation to ensure we can navigate the current crises, both in the short and long term.

In part, "During the COVID-19 crisis, we witnessed some positive developments in terms of risk mitigation through global corporations, such as the rapid development of vaccines. But we did not respond as well to the crises that followed: the supply chain issues that plagued us as economies were rapidly released from lockdowns; the Russian invasion of Ukraine that triggered an energy crisis, which fueled inflation in the G7 economies and, for the first time since the 2008 Great Financial Crisis, interest rate increases; and the stronger US dollar, which had consequences for countries and businesses with dollar-denominated energy bills and debts."

214 44 Gold is down by $27 so far. Doesn't make sense.
Posted by: Maj. Healey

Actually it does, gold is a store of wealth and usually goes down in price during deflation/recessions and prices go up with inflation/war/uncertainty. Silver often follows but in the past had industrial uses (photography etc.) that stabilized prices. That is not present anymore so recently I think it tends to fluctuate with gold prices but would have to actually look deeper to see the correlation.

Same thing is happening to crypto--it has fallen and to a modest extent--oil and commodities are flat due to the impending reduction of demand by a slowing world economy.

Inflationary cycles almost always end in a bust.

LOL. Wow. What an incisive bit of insight.

"Risk mitigation" in this context means, "deal with the debt. Stop adding to it and get back to surplus - at all levels - to dig out of the hole." That in turn means, "the end of the current Party power system and potential breakup - soft or hard - of major political entities and serious damage to global power class."

Ain't gonna happen. We're riding this thing until it augers in.

And not that most of the major retail investment sites went "offline."
Preventing individuals from cutting their losses by selling.
While the institutions were still able to keep selling. And opening shorts.

Also, the market moves way faster than the dinosaur media--it's already priced in a Fed rate cut: There won't be anything but a short-lived spike if they do cut.
Which is why they won't cut.

Gold goes down simply because it is a precursor of deflation (which in modern terms is less than 3-4 pct or so) and less demand due to decreasing income, shift to other assets, etc.

Like a house, art, gold is not actually an investment in the traditional sense but actually a store of wealth. People flock to it in inflationary times and demand/price slumps in relative deflationary times.

It was a great headline "Nothing But Gold Or Silver Acceptable for Payment!" for the goldbugs, I suppose.

They prefer to lord over the peasants in their GOPe aristocracy while they can still get some more grift. Then they will flee to other nations like locusts.

Something similar happened with the Venezuelans that were connected with their two political parties pre Chavez. They were upper class and quite comfortable looting the oil revenues while the lower classes languished. Chavez broke their uniparty and took power legitimately because most of the Venezuelans had enough of the nasty looting upper classes there.

The cure in that case was worse than the disease and Chavez simply cut out the middle man and grifted directly from the oil revenues to the extent that the economy crashed and has never recovered in a state that should be fabulously wealthy. Maduro is simply Chavez on steroids and without any popularity.

Gold usually acts countercyclically. It goes up during recessions, which is also when you see deflation. Commodities in general correlate with inflation, but for gold that impact is swamped by its use as a safe haven asset.

Under hyperinflation inflation will dominate its price movement, but in more ordinary times it works more like US Treasuries.

We made good money off Cramer's endorsement of Apple back in 2010 - but a stopped clock is right twice a day (unless it's a 24 hour clock)

He recently implied Harris would be better for business, but what made me really suspect he's being influenced by his network bosses were his full-throated enthusiastic support for the clot-shot - saying people who refused were 'selfish' as I recall, and his embrace (now tempered) of the electric cars.

I think he is good at spotting trends and profiting off them early. I don't like his continual promotion of his 'investment club'.

A guy named Robert White, I think, he was the first to get Air Force astronaut wings. Flew at 300,000 feet or whatever, and was captured in WWII as a fighter pilot. Re-activated for Korea. Served in combat over Viet Nam too. Commanded this, designed more planes, etc etc.

There's a picture of him in silver flight suit, and Chuck Yeager (in dress blues no less!) discussing the flight at a dry lake bed. In those days it was legal for them to advertise Wheat Chex on Space Patrol. You want to grow up and fly X-15s too, don't you Timmy? Well be sure to eat a balanced breakfast buddy!

Way back when, before HFT became a thing, I bought stocks here and there. I used two pieces of information when buying stock: P/E and Debt to Income to determine value. After the crash, I realized I no longer trusted the balance sheet of companies, because I was pretty sure they were marking stuff as assets that should have been moved to the debit side of their balance sheet. Funny thing, over all, my approach did make me a few dollars. Not a lot, but, I didn't lose my shirt.

They pretty much suck because builders don't use a lot of nails. I gotta about 5 methods. One is turn lights off and use a flashlight to the side of the wall. The odds that a dimple is going to show up where the nail got bashed and never given enough coats of drywall are pretty damn high. From there measure. Another method is educated guess. If you have a wall outlet it is certainly attached to a stud. Use a finishing nail and tap tap tap. If you hit wood, determine the center of the stud. If you don't hit anything move over half an inch and try again until you hit wood. Sometimes outlets are to the left of the stud, sometimes to the right. Once you score, measure from there.

2016 Hillary, as much as I loathed her, made perfect sense in prospect: first woman, established vs unknown, boring vs unpredictable, etc.

2020 Biden, as much as I loved Trump's "America First" policy and what it did for the economy, I totally get why Biden would have been favored: four years of media onslaught and hyping up every nothingburger as the biggest gaffe in history, Covid shutting down the world, etc.

2024 Kamala? Seriously? Where is her appeal coming from? Dems supporting her makes perfect sense. They don't care who the nominee is. The (D) after the name just means "puppet for the big government deep state." But why would independents swing to her? I just don't see any intangible working in her favor like there was in 2016 and 2020, one of which Trump won, and the other he greatly increased his number of votes.

390 Blake, because I was an Independent contractor for many years, I had a Keogh account which I always fully funded every year. I had a client who worked for Fidelity. His job was to oversee the mutual funds to make sure that they followed the rules.
I decided that was the way to go. Researched and picked a number of funds covering different categories of stocks. I have weathered a number of these storms and so far they have not disappointed.

398 Gold usually acts countercyclically. It goes up during recessions, which is also when you see deflation. Commodities in general correlate with inflation, but for gold that impact is swamped by its use as a safe haven asset.

Under hyperinflation inflation will dominate its price movement, but in more ordinary times it works more like US Treasuries.

Gold does not do well in economic shocks initially (store of value) but can do better afterwards depending on the times (wars, shortages, etc), government policies, etc.

Use Macrotrends 100 year of gold prices and you can see the peaks and valleys.

Energy is actually a better proxy for the economy as gross energy demand goes up in a functioning economy and goes down in a non functioning one.

Funny story. My FiL came to help me hang a TV. He kept tapping the wall to find the stud.

You seriously would've thought we were shooting at the wall with the amount of holes he put in the thing. Managed to miss every stud. Was impressive.

Depends on a lot of information but a half a percent drop is probably not going to cut it with the other economic problems going on. That leaves out potential oil price shock if the Middle East goes up in flames. Take out Kharg Island and energy prices will soar.

This comes down to a fundamental disagreement on methodology.

Most women I have met subscribe to the "just in time" model of dishwasher loading. As dirty dishes are made, they go into the dishwasher promptly to keep the counters and sink neat. Since the final dish volume and distribution is unknown, it results in what appears to be haphazard loading. It wasn't haphazard in fact, it was due to a data deficit.

The other approach is the "capacity optimized" model of dishwasher loading. In this approach, dirty dishes are cached nearby - on the counters or in the sink - until it approaches a volume approaching a full load. Then the dishwasher is loaded all at once and optimized for maximum capacity, then immediately run. The upside is greater loading efficiency. The downside is that it looks messy during the dirty dish production stage.

One fun variant on this I've been considering...I own my house. Well...I have a loan. If I don't make my loan payments my bank will take my house until I pay off the loan.

I also have real estate taxes. And just like the bank loan if I don't pay my regular tax payment the government will take possession.

But...I can't just "pay off" the government taxes can I? So do I even own it or am I renting it from the government?

In a "stagflation" economy, which features the worst of both worlds, low growth and high inflation, you can't cut interest rates to spur growth because that will increase the inflation which is already too high, and you can't raise rates to slow inflation because that will tank an already-weak economy.

I have several electronic stud finders, some of them pretty expensive. The best stud finder I've found is a simple magnet. Move it around on the wall until it hits a nail head. A vertical line from that point is the stud.

Phosphates help, but even phosphate-free detergents work much better if you allow the dishwasher to work properly by giving it a dose it can consume during pre-wash.

Also, pro tip: go to Ace Hardware and buy a tub of TSP. It's available and dirt cheap. Add a pinch of it to your detergent (whatever kind you use) in the main dispenser. It costs next to nothing to add the phosphates back in and it is a lot cheaper than buying special-purpose detergents.

Large plates always go to one side of bottom rack, small to the other, serving dishes in front of them. Glasses and glassware on second rack and utensils on third rack. Everything has its place. Very organized. I run it every third or 4th day, depending. I wash my pans and sharp knives by hand.

Hubby doesn't touch anything in it or put anything in it. He has been known to put a dish in the sink if I'm not home. He does zero dishes.

Meanwhile, he has laundry issues and washes and folds everything himself. It's quite nice. He does an amazing job.

Works great for us.

I operate a small business that is an arcade - in a mall. I see first hand when things take a turn for the worst, since even cheap fun gets axed from budgets first.

This silent recession has been going on since October of last year. Last November was the worst performing November I've seen in 16 years in business - even compared to 2020. This last month I saw one of my slowest July's on record too.

Historically, and I have my own earnings data to back this up, both November and July are generally in my top 5 months. Except for under Cumalanomics, that has suddenly changed.
