THE MORNING RANT: Kamala and Fracking - Can She Successfully Pull Off The “Trust Me, I’m Lying” Gambit?

One of the most entertaining political moves when a left-wing politician has secured a nomination and must appeal to an audience beyond the far-left base is the “Trust me, I’m lying” gambit. It gets employed when a candidate has a position that is toxic to the general public, yet is a foundational issue for the Democrats’ base. Thus, the candidate needs to make a statement that, if effective, will fool mainstream voters, with the intention that the activist base understands that the statement is just a politically necessary lie. It often blows up on the candidate.

In Kamala Harris’ case, she just rolled out the “Trust me, I’m lying” strategy on the issue of fracking for oil. The Democrat party in general is hostile to the petroleum industry, and its coastal left-wing base is religious about its desire to destroy the oil and gas industry, and bring a halt to all new drilling.

In Kamala’s own words at a CNN townhall meeting during the 2020 presidential primaries, “There’s no question I’m in favor of banning fracking.”

Unfortunately, Pennsylvania is a must-win state for Kamala, and it has an oil boom going on. Promising to kill off all those high-paying, blue collar, oilfield jobs is a winning message in San Franciso and Boston, but it doesn’t play so well in western Pennsylvania. So Kamala is trying the always difficult “Trust me, I’m lying” approach, hoping she can fool the blue-collar voters in Pennsylvania, while also hoping her radical left-wing base knows she is just lying to get elected, and that they’ll still vote for her despite Kamala now being on the record as pro-fracking.

“Harris courts swing voters with fracking reversal” [The Hill – 8/01/2024]

Vice President Harris has reversed her position on fracking, signaling a move to the center on the issue. The rightward shift comes as she tries to court swing voters in states like Pennsylvania.

A few years ago I wrote about how difficult it has become to pull off the “Trust me, I’m lying” charade, focusing especially on the 2018 Tennessee Senate race in which “moderate” Democrat Phil Bredesen and Republican Marsha Blackburn were vying for the open US Senate seat formerly held by Republican Bob Corker. Polling showed the race to be tight, and the media was ecstatic about the chances of a Democrat flipping a Senate seat in deep red Tennessee.

Then the Kavanaugh Supreme Court nomination happened, and it just kept dragging on, getting uglier and ever more preposterous. Throughout it all, Bredesen kept trying to straddle the top political issue of the day. He kept refusing to say how he’d vote on the Kavanaugh nomination, indicating to both sides that he was inclined - but not yet committed - to vote their way. Meanwhile, Blackburn was quite emphatic about her support for Kav, and the polls started breaking toward Blackburn. Bredesen could no longer wait until after the vote to declare his stand.

So Bredesen rolled out the “Trust me, I’m lying” strategy, stating that if he were currently a Senator, he would vote to confirm Kavanaugh. With that, his campaign quickly imploded.

Unfortunately for him, it played out exactly the opposite of how “Trust me, I’m lying” is supposed to work. Everyone knew he was lying, except for the left-wing activists who form the base of the Democrat party. They took Bredesen at face value. And they revolted against him.

“Volunteers bolt Bredesen over Kavanaugh support” [Politico – 10/11/2018]

For Kamala to succeed in her fingers-crossed-behind-her-back “support” of fracking, she needs the anti-carbon, net-zero zealots to play along. That’s a little like asking a religiously devout person to deny his faith in service to a greater cause.

Just Stop Oil spraying building.JPG

Kamala’s faux-support of fracking is also causing problems for other Democrats who cannot acknowledge that her shifting position is a transparently phony political maneuver.

Sherrod Brown, a left-wing Democrat who is hostile to the petroleum industry, is running for re-election in Ohio, and was asked by the media about Kamala’s new “support” for fracking.

“Kamala Harris’ fracking flip-flop is affecting races for other Democrats” [NY Post – 8/02/2024]

“My focus is on my state and my work,” a flustered Brown mumbled on his way toward an elevator. “I’ve endorsed Vice President Harris … I don’t know what she said on fracking.”

Let me paraphrase what Sen. Brown was trying to say, “Trust me, Kamala is lying.”

And?

Joe Biden said the same thing in 2020 and Donald Trump said the opposite to a crowd of over 10,000 people in western PA on the eve of the election.

And he kept his campaign promises.

Trump *is* a liar. He says one thing and does another.

Vice President Harris' evolution on various topics is not an indicator of deceit, but is rather an indicator of experience and flexibility. The right-wing pillorying of adaptation as "flip-flopping" is itself dishonest.

She believed one thing based on one set of assumptions. As she achieved greater insight and experience, her position shifted. Such shifts are rarely full reversals, but that doesn't stop the White Wingers from crying "flip-flop! flip-flop!" every time somebody integrates new information and experience into her knowledge base.

What you're seeing is maturity, intelligence and flexibility. To cast that as "lying" is profoundly dishonest.

Seriously, who is going to be able to do anything about the Philly vote counting center when they paper over the windows and kick out the GOP observers?

During 2020, when the GOP Observers tried to get access or demanded audits, they were told in no uncertain terms to f**k off.

And this f**k off came all the up the chain from SCOTUS.

So, again, the only way to really make any substantive change is to overthrow existing governments and install new ones.

What was true in 1776, 1789 and 1989 is true today.

72 Jesse Kelly is my spirit animal. He had a discussion the other day about how communists are always conducting probing attacks. And the Biden 2020 campaign - such as it was - was a probing attack. Could they get away with just not having press conferences, keep the candidate sequestered, and just not answering questions generally.

We know the answer: yes, they could do that, they could still get that candidate elected, and the press would let them get away with it.

So that's how they are going to go with Kamala. It won't even be a "trust me I'm lying" answer. It will simply go unanswered, so the media which isn't that interested in asking the questions to begin with won't bother trying.

I was watching a Lotus Eaters segment on some of the Just Stop Oil activists *finally* facing jail time for their vandalism and disruption of traffic. There must've been a dozen instances they showed, and the only times they were stopped was when authorities were right there already. They stepped out onto a Formula One racetrack and fortunately it was a red flag lap, but if a driver hadn't seen them in time, you know who would get blamed for the fatality!

I dug into the internals of the latest CBS poll that showed Harris up by 1.

A couple of major issues with their methodology. First, they weight it. Bullshit. Second, they weight it based on electoral models built on 2020 and 2022.

With massive election rule changes in GA (where they also released results), it's a serious question about why they would assume similar results. Plus, the whole mail in balloting thing is going to be far less.

They're playing games with polls. Just like always. It's not new.

What I failed to appreciate was the barrel of $1 a pair at the checkout in a Hawaiian 7-11 was apparently the height of the craft of a mature technology. I should have purchased a dozen. This pair lasted about 20 years or more and were comfortable. The replacements are just pale imitation in material and construction. They last less than a year with any use. Jeeze.

Of course one can buy bespoke open toe stuff. Teva and others were big at one time. River rafters and assorted scrofulous desert rats figured that out too.

249 Shorts are also popular for hiking even at altitude, and when it gets fairly cold too, or it works out that way. Down to about freezing. So long as there is no wind. During heavy exertion and hiking qualifies when carrying a pack, very little clothing is required to maintain the correct temperature. She's 25. That's still in prime territory. It doesn't matter that she's homely. If she wants it, she can *easily* get it. She can saunter into any bar in the land between midnight and one o'clock and find someone who is more than willing to take her home and throw a bone into her. 281 Colorado Politics: Willie Brown thinks Harris should keep people ‘guessing’ about her ideology, Jack Birle, Washington Examiner Jul 31, 2024

Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown offered his advice for Vice President Kamala Harris as she battles former President Donald Trump, including keeping people "guessing" about her ideology.

Harris and Brown dated in the 1990s, and around the time the two were in a relationship, she was appointed to two California boards. Brown has also supported Harris in subsequent races. The former mayor told Politico that while he is no longer directly in touch with the vice president, he has several suggestions as she seeks to win the presidency.

Brown said that President Joe Biden should step down to allow her to show how she would be as president prior to the election, to avoid making her identity her central campaign pitch, and to embrace her unclear ideological tilt.

“If she keeps people continually guessing, then she can adjust the interpretation of your guess every time she sees you,” Brown said.

Until someone didn't. All it requires is a bit of contrast. The Iowa state fair during the 2016 campaign was illustrative. All the candidates from all the parties showed up in their brand new blue jeans and starched flannel shirts to pretend like they were people, when Trump landed in his helicopter and stepped out in his New York suit.

Immediately provided visceral evidence of just how phony the rest of the field was.

307 STG, that's the tragedy of all this. Modern politics is scripted almost completely revolving around myriad issues that have all been artificially contrived.

All of them. It is literally insane to operate this way, but here we are. Energy is of course a huge component, and has been for years because it is a lynchpin or keystone to so much that follows.

Safe to say that America the US of A is the envy of the world in so many ways. Food production - farmland alone is priceless. Then the timber, oil, coal, gas, minerals. America is the Saudi Arabia of Coal. Known and proven reserves of high quality coal are probably 500 years. Alaska is a whole nother subject.

Our leaders though, are talking about eating bugs, transfer payments to people living in pods who have no jobs (Sure, Jan) rechargeable cars, and fine-tuning the weather 100 years from now.

None of this is necessary. None of this is inevitable, but nobody seems too inclined to try and stop any of it.

Excluding 2020 which is the current high mark for fraud, my scientific wag is normal fraud in a general election is about ten to fifteen percent. 2020, my guess it was roughly 20 percent.

That includes paying actual voters to hand over their ballot to be filled in, inserting fraudulent votes by harvesting mail in ballots from the USPS dead letter office that have no valid address nor resident, capturing mail in ballots sent en masse to large apartment buildings, dorms, etc. Scanning existing ballots over and over again election night, and possibly some jiggery pokery on electronic voting tabulation. No one has ever had a credible explanation other than the Code Ninja findings in 2020 Georgia elections where Edison (the media feed from the tabulators--the other went to SoS offices) showed votes being subtracted and added in real time. That can never happen according to the tabulator software folks as votes are additive--not something subtracted.

Exactly.

It's stronger alright. The funneling of people into Medicaid was what allowed the government to require "rundeathisnear" treatment for Covid patients even though it was killing so many of them. If a hospital didn't follow the deadly Covid protocol the fedgov would withhold Medicare/Medicaid payments. The government yanked providers around by the purse strings. There is much blood on their hands, including Obama's.

She can saunter into any bar in the land between midnight and one o'clock and find someone who is more than willing to take her home and throw a bone into her. 350 The oil shocks, the embargos, the devaluation of the dollar in the 1970s really set the stage for the untethered currency markets. Deficit borrowing and spending.

"Deficits don't matter". Cheney was talking about them as they pertain to political campaigns. That's the context.

When was the last time any politician talked about balance of trade, favorable or otherwise? The US went negative in 1974 or thereabouts and never looked back.

Wages have been stagnant since 1974 too. Nobody could have seen this coming, recall. They were insistent at the time, the "experts" that a combination of high monetary inflation and unemployment could not exist together. Impossible.

You'll never guess what happened!

I read an interesting article online about that not long ago. According to Bob Denver, they were originally going to have an episode in which they found a sunken cruise liner that they were able to salvage all their stuff from. But then the producers decided that it would be funnier if they just let the castaways have all this stuff without explaining how they came by it, and just let the members of the audience come up with their own explanations.

360 281 Colorado Politics: Willie Brown thinks Harris should keep people ‘guessing’ about her ideology, Jack Birle, Washington Examiner Jul 31, 2024

If you are not in a state that is a swing state--it is foolish to waste money on commercials. I am in such a state and am seeing them on streaming channels like Sleuth no less. Effective ads.

My guess is that the GOP and Trump since dumping the awful Ronna and cronies is focusing intently on the lowest propensity voters--young males and occasional working class voters and turning them out.

So you won't see the crappy mass mailers, robocalls, wasteful broad ads across the country, etc. that enriched campaign consultants at the expense of the candidate's voter outreach. Targeted is the name of the game and mass media is no longer where the low propensity voters are. They are on social media, streaming channels, etc.

This ain't your campaign from the 80's like the GOP liked to run well into the 2020's. That era is dead and so is its politics.

All because of the Karens in the world that want other people to be as miserable as they are.

For one thing, Kamala is only the putative nominee. She won't 'officially' be coronated until she formally accepts the nomination from Barry.

For a second thing, we're dealing with one of duplicitious politcal organizations on the planet. One can never be too sure what might emerge from the Dem primordial goo in Chicago.

418 Er, NOT to wear black socks and shorts. But I think he probably did.

I'm always fascinated how fashion trends evolve. The 60s skinny ties and crew cuts somehow morphed into bushy hair, sideburns, porn staches, wide ties with paisley shirts as a sort of business attire. Even Gene Kranz let his hair grow out to 3/8ths or so by 1972. Insanity! Wide ties were of the devil, it reminds me too much of Avocodo appliances, "mood rings" and other assorted 70s strangeness.

Recall the joy of a new POS car from Detroit! The first thing one noticed, is that it stank like high heaven. Rotten eggs. Catalytic convertors.

Yup.
TV ads are as useless as cable news.

Never forget that one of the biggest reasons the NeverTrump hate him so is that he's cut them off from their usual pig trough of huge commissions made from stupidly expensive TV ads, mailers, radio ads, etc.

Recall one of the big moves by the NeverTrump was an ad in Times Square? The commission on that would have likely paid off most of us here's mortgages.

Try Westerns, Sleuth, etc. Trump team is apparently using micromarketing and Elon is actually helping with the GOTV effort.

Mass ads are like carpet bombing and very costly for the results---micro targeted ads which were first rolled out by Obama in 2012 back when cable was a thing used a similar tactic and was targeting minority voters on channels that most non minorities never watched. Then shows like Golden Girls, in rerun channels like TV Land etc. for the women.

As we get toward the election, the local news is a prime target for ads but they will probably be targeted even there to appeal to the low propensity voter to turn out rather than red meat for the policy voters.

Basically, most of the ad expenses are wasted on the committed which is about 43-45 percent of the Trump Vote and likewise on the Dem advocates which is about the same base size. The scarce 5-10 percent of swing voters is where the action is and turning out voters that rarely if ever vote. Old guard GOP type hate that.

Patton required 3rd Army soldiers to wear a tie in the European theater, in a combat zone. He could and did issue fines for being unshaved, boots not polished, bad haircuts and similar, if I recall correctly.

In those days, a private made maybe $20 a month, and getting busted down a grade or two, getting a $50 fine really stung.

Yep. Ad placement brings in a much higher percentage commission to the campaign managers than managing volunteers and GOTV.

It also strokes the ego of the whale donors as they see the useless ads themselves and sometimes have input into them, and the campaign staff does not have to deal with the smelly people--only the ad professionals of the media.

That is why a lot of the GOPe strength is the professional staffers and their desire is to get paid--not to produce results.
