Female Olympic Boxer Forfeits Fight In Tears After 46 Seconds of Being Pummelled by a Man

Italy's Angela Carini quit 46 seconds into her Olympic boxing match with Imane Khelif on Thursday, after the Algerian -- who failed a gender eligibility test last year -- landed the first significant punch of the fight. The pair were competing in the women's 66kg category, in a round-of-16 bout in Paris, but the fight had barely begun before it came to a premature end. Carini, who tearfully fell to her knees in the ring, later told reporters she had never been punched so hard in her career. After an early pause in the fight, due to Carini needing to adjust her head guard, Khelif landed a clean right hand. Almost immediately, Carini motioned to her team and opted against continuing, with the referee waving off the contest. After Khelif's hand was raised, Carini dropped to her knees in tears. Before and after that moment, the Italian twice seemed to ignore Khelif's attempts to console her. Carini could also be heard telling her coach, "It's not right, it's not right!" before promptly leaving the arena.What a hater! She should be #cancelled.

I don't think it's so much the power of the punch, but the perfect spot it landed: right on the chin, in between the headgear. It smashes your chin into your skull. Painful and it usually makes you dizzy.
So even if you can stand the pain, you know that being dizzy will ensure you get whacked again. So you throw in the towel. I think it's very likely that's exactly what happened here.

This is a part of the issue.
I remember Theodore Dalrymple's "Life at the Bottom" where he describes warning a girl about getting involved with violent men and she says "I can take care of myself". When he goes on to tell her men are stronger and therefore, more dangerous, she says "That's sexist".
The girl who didn't learn much from school learned VERY WELL that saying there was any difference between men and women was sexist.
These are the types of people who think the Hollywood portrayal of a 90lb woman subduing 200+lb men is believable and very possible. Those who are a LITTLE more intelligent think that the weight class is the only issue. (it's not)

I don't think most women understand how much harder men can hit, even men of the same size. They think "how much harder can a man hit than a powerful woman?" The answer: much, much harder.
Back when I was competing in tae kwon do matches, my master had a daughter about my age who was fucking AWESOME. She'd been training since she was born.
Anyway, she would spar with me to prep her for her matches. The idea was to face a bigger, stronger opponent so that her actual opponents would seem weak. She was much more technically skilled than me. But if these were real fights, I would have literally killed her. Her hardest hits on me were like slaps. But if I ever hit her full force, I would have taken her head off.
And yes, she was smoking hot.

But she still climbed into the ring. It was only when she personally feared for her life that she refused. She didn't refuse on principle or because this is *wrong* on its face. She didn't decline to participate. She climbed right in.
She got mugged by reality. That is a valuable object lesson and will probably be helpful. But from what I can tell so far, she *still* isn't saying, "this was all bullshit from the start and this is *wrong.*"
It's loudly implied, but unsaid as far as I can tell.
This example is going to help move the needle, I think, but she did not, apparently, disapprove.

Polling is pretty consistent showing that AZ and NV are out of reach for Harris now. Trump is over 50% in those states, and strucural changes in AZ in particular is making this a tough lift for Democrats, even with the GOP cheating to help them.
This leaves 4 states that where the election will be decided, GA, PA, MI, and WI. GA is in play because for now Harris is appealing to black women. With Kemp/Raffesberger helping them cheat, they think they possibly can pull of a repeat of the 2020 cheat.
Also I expect they are going to make Shapiro the VP pick to help in PA.
Harris must win 3 of the 4 states to win, any combination. If Trump win any two states, he wins.
All of this assumes Harris does not get a surprise in MN or VA. Also a state like NH or ME could mess up the math for her in some combinations.

If that's what had happened, I'd agree with you. Show up, get ready, then walk away. That's a powerful message that would have an effect.
But that isn't what happened. She showed up, got ready, started the bout and walked away only when it was obvious that she risked serious injury.
This does not appear to have protest, it appears to have been self-preservation. I have no problem with that. She made the right choice in that moment and it is still going to result in some helpful messaging. But this was not a protest.

But against a lesser-skilled but bigger and much stronger man (me), she wouldn't have lasted 30 seconds. I could hit right through her guard. I don't know what her true skill level was. But even the best boxers get caught with punches they should have seen coming. He also threw it from a high angle, almost over her guard. I just don't think she was ready for the speed, the power, or the unorthodox technique.
My best guess is also that she had felt the power earlier in the round, and was fighting very defensively by that point. Fighting overly defensively is usually the best way to get KTFO. It's like the "Prevent Defense" in football.

It's amateur boxing with headgear. Pro boxing doesn't have headgear. I think the main difference is that amateur boxing is mostly won on "points." And a clean head-shot is easier to see and score. So there are more head-shots. In pro boxing, there are more body shots because the matches are longer and body shots really wear an opponent down.

Yes, but amateur is more points based. There are rarely any knockouts or even knockdowns. And the matches are much shorter than pro. So the main benefit of body blows in pro matches is not as much of a factor in amateur. In amateur, it's better to land one good headshot and get that clear point, than it is to dig into the body and not get a clear point.

I've seen many of those Men V Woman sports video compilation. Women vs kids, Women vs Old men, a team versus one man in soccer, you name it. In all of them despite crushing the women you can see the guy holding back. Not doing the incidental contact with defenders that is routine, only shooting away from the goalie and not very hard.
