21 It would be so easy for this to be a dreary scene. It has all the elements - isolation, weariness, gray skies, solitude - but it isn't dreary. It's just a scene and, in my opinion, a pleasant one. She isn't downtrodden, she's just tired.

I love this. I might get a print when I have an income again. I'm adding it to my very short list of prints I'd like. Depending on how big it is (when I order prints, I try to match original dimensions), I have a couple of spots it could go.

Not unusual, even in the industrial age.

The "Pittsburgh Potty" is an example. Common in Pittsburgh (thus the name), it's usually in a basement and consists of a freestanding toilet and a crude showering facility (either a small stall or a big utility sink with flexible faucets for reach), often also doubling as a laundry room.

Pittsburgh was *dirty* because of all the coal, and steelworkers got especially filthy. Get home, enter through the basement, clean up and use the can so you don't track coal dust and soot all through the damn house.

This is also one possible origin of the "don't wear white after Labor Day" rule. As summer winds down, heating turns up - and in an era where "heat" meant "coal," your whites were unlikely to stay white. So at a common "end of summer" point, just put your whites away.

———-

The biggest issue IMO is that we’ve been surveying the night sky for decades and astronomers see super nova explosions in other galaxies, the light of which would take millions of years to arrive to Earth. But in a universe only 6000 years old that means the super nova never happened, rather God created the light to mimic an explosion. I can’t see that as anything other than straight up deception, which goes against God’s character. So either most of astronomical science (and a good bit of physics) is complete bunk or the interpretation that God created the universe 6000 years ago is bunk.

@AdamKinzinger
There is a push by MAGA to say “real men” can’t vote for Kamala.
Their understanding of masculinity is so juvenile.
Real men have compassion. Real men protect the vulnerable, real men would advocate tooth and nail for Ukraine to survive.
Soft, weak men, need someone to tell them who to vote for. A crisis of masculinity exists, but mostly on the right.

I always look to Butch Adam to define masculinity.

Funny story from the NBA. One of the teams was leaking stuff to the press but the league office couldn't figure out who. So they floated four different stories to four teams they thought it could be.

Taylor Swift is currently a new song about her break-up with Joe Biden.

At first, she was fascinated with his gentle sexy hair-sniffing ways and his musky, manly odor of feces leaking from his Depends. Biden's angry outbursts and weird whispering spoke to her very soul.

But....well, now the thrill is gone.

I used to edit my obtuse sentences multiple times before submission to journals. I learned long ago to avoid writer's block to simply put material on the page and then edit the heck out of it. Solves one problem but introduces others. Started posting here simply to clarify my thoughts into prose way back when. That was before the cut and paste troll struck and AOS instituted a limit.

That is forcing me to be more succinct, but I often butcher grammar rules when trying to edit for the gray box length. And so it goes.

434 Oh, she's right. I've known she's right for a while.

My sentences gain complexity and lose focus the longer they go on. I adopted the habit decades ago because I thought that's what esteemed writers do. It's the Joyce influence.

I cut things down on my own now,...when I notice.

--------
I used to edit my obtuse sentences multiple times before submission to journals.

Posted by: whig at July 31, 2024 10:39 AM (qdbNv)

I don't think there's any absolute rule.

Long complex sentences can work very well, buuuut there needs to be a reason for their length and complexity.

Short punchy sentences can work.

But, for me a single reading rhythm is a bore.

I like to mix them up. And use them to help delineate characters.

There was a great line in Bewitched that I've remembered since childhood. Darren and Samantha were having a spat, and Darren (the Dick Sargent version, who generally sucked) said "This was all started by something I said."
Samantha: "Oh? What was that?"
Darren: "I do."

Writing depends on the purpose and audience. I always write prose as any fiction that I would write would probably be an inferior version of Heinlein's competent man in his stories.

Writing fiction depends on being able to get into other people's heads. I find that difficult.
