Wednesday Morning Rant

From the Outside Looking In

Last week, an interesting picture briefly made the rounds on social media and one of the Morons (I forget who, but all credit to that person) dropped it in a thread. It purports to be an "infographic" from a Japanese newspaper created to help its readers roughly understand the American political divide. I have no idea which paper it appeared in - if any - or if it is real at all. I can find the picture easily enough, but not its true origin. It appears to be a social media phenomenon, but I found it interesting enough that even if it isn't real, I think it's still worth looking at.

The graphic shows a point-for-point comparison of some of the differences between "Democrats" and "Republicans" in the culture, not policy:

jp-infographic.jpg
Click to Embiggen

Some things immediately jump out. For one thing, it puts far too much stock in party affiliation. The infographic no more describes "Democrats" and "Republicans" than it describes literal donkeys and elephants. But the parties are still how most people think of things despite the fact that they're functionally merged at the national level, so I won't hold it against them. This is an illustration to try to communicate broad concepts, not a treatise on single-party rule. The contrasts the illustrator chose to draw, however, are interesting.

Casual vs. formal (I think is what they're going for, or perhaps "animated and casual vs. restrained and formal") isn't really all that close to the mark, I don't think. Standoffishness and sloppiness aren't monopolized by either "side," but as far as an idealized concept, it may be valid. The middle panels are more interesting. Urban vs. rural. Basketball vs. baseball. Sushi vs. fried chicken. EVs vs. pickup trucks. The "trendy coffee vs. soda" comparison, however, baffles me.

The final panels, though, have what is probably the most accurate thing in the picture. The last piece has three themes: cable news, technology and religion. The cable news piece is decently close, presented as "CNN vs. Fox." It could have been any non-Fox outlet, but fair enough. Fox News sucks hugely and is part of the same complex, but it still rides an undeserved reputation for being "Republican." The technology piece is portrayed as a baffling "Apple vs. HP" computer preference, though it might really mean "Apple vs. non-Apple," - but even that is a stretch. The religion piece, though is incisive. Church on one side, pride marches on the other. Wokism is the demonic and amoral religion of the Left, and the comparison is apt - however much the Left hates it when their creepy articles of faith are described as such.

An outsider's perspective on things is often useful to see how you're being interpreted by others. Seeing it boiled down into a low-resolution view in a high-brow political cartoon will help reveal the distillation of that perception. On balance, I think it's fairly valuable. If this is how the Japanese really see the divide, I think it's at least inside the realm of reality.

I'm glad I'm on the "courtesy, tidy homes, faith and fried chicken" side of things, if nothing else.

Fun fact, Australians have actually more guns now than when the huge and idiotic gun buy back occurred. Plus a fairly large percentage of firearms there were and are not on the books so to say (usually old shotguns, 22 LRs, old bolt action Enfields, etc.).

Canada ended its long arms firearm registry for much of the same reason. Dunno if Castro's son re instituted it and I think at least Ontario tried to continue the useless project. Vastly expensive, did not help solve crimes etc. Likewise the US states that required fired shell casings--vast registry, expensive, and ultimately useless for solving crimes.

I'll speculate on two reasons for that.

First, there is a lot of enthusiasm on both sides when it comes to that. Not by policy, but in reality.

Second, the concept of private ownership and control of firearms by anyone is likely an extremely alien concept overall that would likely have been excluded even if the illustrator thought of it in the first place, because it would probably cause more confusion than clarity.

It's an effect of meritocracy. Class status means little in reality. Rich people and powerful people have bigger houses and nicer stuff and more flexibility, but they aren't really "better" in most cases (high society is slightly different, and is a small group). Despite what the communists like to blather on about, it's the "capitalists" that made a classless society, not them.

But the provinces and local police departments are refusing to aid in confiscation plans so he's letting that go. We're waiting him out [hopefully before Oct. 2025] to be replaced and have the new Tory government return to the previous restricted weapons laws and permitted list.

They have an odd sense of racism though. It isn't necessarily race-based or skin-color based. It's more of the tribal/cultural kind.

Japanese think they're better than everyone, including other Asians. Yet they are obsessed with Western culture (especially USA).

Taiwanese mostly despise mainland Chinese. Not just because of the animosity b/t the countries, but because the Taiwanese are mostly Manchurian Chinese and mainlanders are mostly Hun. Manchurians always looked down on Hun. Hun mostly hated the Manchurians.

239 In one of his books, Malcolm Gladwell claims that despite most people expressing a strong preference for either Coke or Pepsi, very few people can actually tell them apart in a blind taste test. In fact, he claims that in a test with 3 samples, two of one and one of the other, most people can't even tell which one is different. Of course, his whole schtick is to make assertions that defy so-called "common knowledge" so maybe he's just BSing but I do find it interesting. Just not interesting enough to bother trying to replicate.

Posted by: Truck Monkey Report at July 24, 2024 11:24 AM (1FWWQ)

Eh, I was stationed in Japan for years and never experienced any racism. Not saying there isn't any, just saying it's grossly exaggerated.

Probably, the low Japanese tolerance for acting like an asshole in public is responsible for a lot of the racist claims. We, as Americans, tolerate a lot of public assholery in our country. Them? Not so much.

The panty machine thing again I've never seen. But, go to the right part of town where Soapland is, or the strip/sex clubs, and yeah, you can probably find panty machines. It's not like they're next to the soda pop machines in the nearest train station.

That's like saying crack is sold on every street corner in the U.S.

Now, the Chinese? Even on my short trips to Hong Kong, I've experience racist attitudes. The world will regret helping China become the world number one power.

YMMV.

246 The best southern fried chicken in the U.S. is, believe it or not, served for lunch every Wednesday starting at 11 am Central Time at an Irish pub in Pensacola, FL.

People start lining up outside the door around 10:30. The large parking lot is pretty much full by 11:30. The pub runs out of chicken around 12:30 and when it's gone it's gone.

The pub procured the recipe from a place that had gone out of business when the original owners passed on and the adult kids had no interest in keeping it going. (Years ago, when it was still in business, USA Today named it the best fried chicken in America).

The pub is McGuires for those reading who live relatively close and maybe want to give it a try.

283 Why The Attack On Kamalas Laugh ??? - Great Answer Here:
"I’m reminded of Margaret Atwood’s adage that a woman’s greatest fear is being killed by a man, and a man’s is being laughed at by a woman," wrote Georgetown University political science professor Matt Kavanagh. "These guys see a woman laughing and don’t register pleasure or joy. They think a woman’s laughter is laughter AT THEM."

Another reason might be that a hearty laugh is considered by some to be unfeminine. A woman is supposed to giggle demurely with a delicate little white-gloved hand over her mouth. No big happy unrestrained laughing at anything; it might be too loud and ladies mustn't be loud.

A hearty laugh is a sign that they're fully human. Can’t deny rights to the fully human.

Goodlawd these conservatives can't stand a strong woman whose intelligence, integrity, and accomplishments put them to shame. So they can't find a damn thing to pick on her on except blatant racist tropes & her contagious belly laugh? Tells u something about these snowflakes.

She’s not putting them to shame. She’s just existing. They’re ashamed of themselves, and that shame turns to anger and hate.

382 Initial reports seem to indicate the rifle had a red dot on it. 1 power, at best. Depending on the type of red dot sight, the dot itself is 2MOA to 4MOA in diameter. Most common, I believe, is a 4 MOA dot. A 4 MOA dot will cover about a 6 inch circle @ 150 yards. Trying to take a head shot with a red dot at that range is difficult but not impossible.

395 Regarding the top panels of the infographic: the emphasis on formality vs. informality in personal relations, speech, attitude, etc. is a big deal in Japanese society, not so much our own. So the idea Republicans interact formally and Democrats informally misses the mark because it is trying to fit aspects of our culture into a “face” cultural mold.

Pepsi began focusing on overseas markets and underwent several mergers, spin offs, etc. and is actually now no. 3 in the US. Conglomerates always end up losing their mojo because corporate focus shifts from one division to another.

Amazon is having that problem losing over 25 billion since 2017 in their electronic gadget department from their Alexa, etc. products. Their delivery of products and quality of them has been deteriorating as well while most of their profits come from their cloud services division.

Israeli law requires construction of shelters in every newly constructed house and apartment since either the mid 90's or early 2000s. Part of the requirements are a metal door and heavier metal shutters. It's insane!

When hi-rise office buildings go up, you can see that the building's center columns are not only elevator banks but reinforced concrete shelters around or between them. Stairwells in office buildings can also be built to meet the requirement.

Now imagine hospitals and schools.

HP is considered (rightly or wrongly) the *business* computer for America, at least it was in the early 90's. (I'll be fair I haven't checked on them in decades, because I just don't care). Apple is considered the slacker/wannabe artist computer.

The fun bit? Whoever did that infographic was presenting the Republicans as "the people who are closer to us."
Formal is preferred, fried chicken is a 'holiday' food (KFC, man, KFC...), business computers are preferred, church is respected, let's not even start with Japan's love of Baseball (they don't care about the NBA what so ever), and most Japanese want to have their own home.
