One needn't have done anything special to the South's economy, merely leave it as it was, which is how things continued for a very long time. The economic outputs and worker model didn't change overly much for quite some time. Arguably Lincoln might've promoted an effort to better link up the South by rail much in the same way he had the West, which might've furthered industrialization, but that's speculative.

131 Okay, movie thread more or less.

We saw two new movies this last week:

1) "Longlegs" - the new Nicholas Cage horror movie.

The story is about a female FBI agent brought in to stop a serial killer that is somehow murdering whole families by getting a family member to kill them all and then commit suicide.

This is a particularly gory movie given the story and there's pretty much no jump scares. This movie wants to creep you out and does a pretty good job at it. NC plays a great lunatic serial killer and is used sparingly.

Very good though not great. Mainly, because while the movie does come to a conclusion, it doesn't really come to an end. So much so that i waited to see if there was going to be an after credits scene.

Great acting all around, great directing and cinematography to establish a constant feeling of slow burn dread.

The plot you may figure out once the movie gets going, however it did seem to surprise people from the reactions,

If this sounds like something you'd like, you probably will.

"Horizon: An American Saga"

Okay, so by now you know that this movie doesn't tell a whole story and in fact just sorta ends with a quick catalog of upcoming scenes.

So, how is it...

Well, first, neither the delightful and discerning Mrs naturalfake and I were bored at all. The multiple stories presented are all dramatic and mostly high stakes. Plus, the acting and directing are great, so you will be drawn into the movie.

The various arc of the various characters progress at different rates so, while one character may be in the first act of his/her story by the time the movie "ends" another character may be in Act Two of their story or Act 3 cuz they're dead.

You get the feeling that this panorama of western life is building toward something big, and in our case are ready to sign up for the ride.

I think one reason Horizon is getting poor critical reviews is because the Indians are not portrayed as delicate, little Smurfs frolicking on the prairie making friends with all the animals. They are portrayed as real people some of whom are ready to kill for their land and way of life.

I suggest even with this shortcoming that you go see Horizon.

Well the Jews are actually an excellent example. They were jurisdictionally independent. Much of the conflict within Christianity was about appropriate authority. Management of official belief within a religion by its authorities was regarded as valid.

Compulsory conversion was not regarded as valid by the Church, though that matters little to kings and emperors.

My wife leads a "Traveling Blessed Mother Ministry" whereby folks that request such are delivered a statue of our Blessed Mother for two weeks for their own individual prayer needs. We have six full dedicated statues and three emergency ones currently. Right now we are booked out until late December. We live in a mostly Baptist locale and surprising enough, some of our Protestant brothers and sisters are taking advantage of the service.

God provides a peaceful meeting ground, if one is so moved.

Right. "Freedom of religion" is an agreement among Christians that we're tired of killing each other over doctrinal arguments. No other religion is party to that arrangement. I'm not hung up on any of this personally. But some people see promoting and vindicating Christianity as more important than winning the presidency. It's kinda hard to fault them for that. I like CS Lewis' take on it in The Last Battle. Emeth, a soldier of Calormene (aka Islam) has his service in life accepted by Aslan, even though he did it in the name of the God Tash.

Aslan has accepted Emeth as one of his servants, becauseall he did was offered in good faith, and therefore was truly done to Aslan. The true servants of Tash only do evil. The Calormene is accepted into heaven with Aslan.

I think any true God understands that those following their version of God righteously, seeking to do good and be virtuous, are in reality serving him. And he will reward them in the way he chooses when the time comes. It's a very beautiful thought by Lewis.

(Again, I'm not hung up on this personally. I'm essentially a pagan when it comes to politics. But I just don't buy that we have to accept this because of the right to free exercise or out of high-mindedness, or rather Christians bothered by this do not have to do so.)
