The Classical Saturday Morning Coffee Break & Prayer Revival

rise-shine-20201223-1022.jpg

*****

Good morning Horde, I hope that you an enjoyable Independence Day celebration. If not we can pray for your recovery from fireworks gone wrong.

How Coffee Helped the Union Caffeinate Their Way to Victory in the Civil War - The North’s fruitful partnership with Liberian farmers fueled a steady supply of an essential beverage

Ten months into the Civil War, the Union was short on a crucial supply, the absence of which threatened to sap the fighting strength of the Northern army: coffee. This critical source of energy and morale was considered almost as vital as gunpowder; Union General Benjamin Butler ordered his soldiers to carry coffee with them always, saying it guaranteed success: “If your men get their coffee early in the morning, you can hold” your position.

Before we enter the Prayer Revival. Just a few housekeeping matters to go over. (Rulz for those of you in Park Falls, WI)

1. This is an open thread. Feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate.
2. Even trolls have feelings, be nice to one another.
3. Running with sharp objects and/or flaming projectiles is not recommended.
4. Have a great weekend!

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

5/25 – Tonypete asked for prayers for an elderly neighborhood couple. They are in failing health and abilities. They insist on living independently, yet they can’t do it. Tonypete and his wife are torn between respecting their wishes and privacy, but there are numerous LEO wellness checks each week.
6/8 – Tonypete and R have been subpoenaed to give testimony at the competency hearing in a few weeks, called by the elderly couple’s children. The elderly couple is still fighting against going to an assisted living facility. It’s just a very sad situation.

6/11 – Sponge’s wife, “The First Lady” has breast cancer, and the initial prognosis is good, as it is Stage 1 and caught early.
6/20 Update – The meeting with the surgeon was moderately frightening, as she ‘s been declared Stage 1B ,which means it’s a relatively aggressive form and can spread quickly.
6/28 Update – The blood test came negative on hereditary cancer markings, so that is good. They meet with the oncologist on 7/11 and surgery is scheduled for 7/22. Hopefully it will be just a lumpectomy and 5 days of radiation.

6/14 – Perfessor Squirrel requests prayers for his friend from church. Jimmy has been suffering some issues with his lungs and could use prayers for healing.

6/15 – Jewells posted that she has decided to end her cancer treatments. She had 6 months to go on her 2 year palliative care program, but the chemo drug is ruining her quality of life.
6/22 Update – They are going to get a second opinion. She still doesn’t want to do any more chemo, but maybe another doctor can come up with something else.
6/29 Update – Jewells will get a CT scan 7/2 and will see the new doctor on 7/8. She is losing weight, which is a concern.

6/15 – Grumpy and Recalcitrant asked for continued prayers for J.J. Sefton of the Morning Report. He is about to begin chemo and radiation therapy.
6/27 Update – J.J. posted: “On a personal note: for those who have been asking about me, I’m four days into treatment and mercifully not feeling any side effects so far. Thank you for your continued support and prayers.” Grumpy and Recalcitrant sends a big thank you to God for helping to keep J.J. strong at this time, and asks that we all keep J.J. in our prayers as he continues with his chemo and radiation therapy for his cancer.
6/29 – J.J. posted that he’d completed week 1 and has 5 more to go. He asked God to bless everyone for their prayers and well wishes.

6/19 – DangerGirl lost the SanityProd requests prayers for her father, who was admitted to the hospital with respiratory issues. He’s been struggling for the past year, on and off, with shortness of breath and could use prayers for both healing and a proper diagnosis. (The doctors can’t figure out what is causing it.) Thank you!
6/27 Update – Dad is back home, on oxygen as needed and other meds. The doctor thinks it is an allergic raction to something that is causing his bronchial tubes to spasm and create mucous, which results in low oxygen levels and breathing issues. Future plans include appointments with allergists and cleaning out the HVAC.

6/22 – Our country is screwed offered prayers of thanksgiving that their daughter, age 27, battling breast cancer, is on her last chemo treatment. She has tolerated it very well. She still will have surgery in August.

6/22 – Aetius451AD sent thanks to the Horde for the prayers, and thanks to God, for the healing of his dad after a heart attack and surgery. Dad is cleared for normal activity now.

6/22 – Tonypete requested prayers for Sandy, a friend from church who passed suddenly.

6/22 – Gushka asked for prayers for herself and for her husband’s soul. His body was found in the river. He had been missing since 12/8. The coroner is ruling it a suicide.

6/23 – Steck asked for prayers for a former co-worker named Allen. Before Allen was transferred back to his former job, Allen became cold and distant after hearing that Steck is a born again Christian. As a former atheist, Steck’s experience is that there’s often a nearby “support system” of fellow atheists. Please pray hard to bring Jesus into this fine man’s life, and into the lives of those around him and change their hearts as well.

6/25 – TP asked for prayers for JT, who is ill and in need of prayer.

6/25 – Alberta Oil Peon posted that he has a lump of some sort impinging on one of his vocal cords. He is booked for surgery on 7/31.

6/26 – VM requested prayers for 2 co-workers. Mrs. C, who is hospitalized for an unspecified illness. And Mrs L, whose teen daughter is in the hospital for a seizure.

6/29 – Misanthropic Humanitarian asked for prayers for our local, state, and federal officials.

6/29 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers for her son’s university. They are facing financial difficulties. It is a small “farm school”, founded by a rabbi, and has a steady enrollment of students studying farm/dairy/animal science. Fenelon’s son was happy there, and the professors are good.

6/29 – Reforger is looking for a job. He quit after 6 years of being treated poorly.

6/29 – bluebell posted that she had the following message from BitterClinger: It is my most fervent prayer that those there that are struggling would find relief, that those that strive would find success, and that those that worry would find comfort, that those that are ill would find healing, and most of all that the truth of the Savior of the world, our Lord Jesus Christ, would live in the hearts of them all, throughout all trials and storms and in every jubilant and celebratory moment and even in the dull times. We shall see each other on the other side, and what a glorious time it will be, when our strivings cease and death and corruption is defeated.”

6/28 – Sal asked for prayers for Karen, age 11, who was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Her prognosis is good, but this is a big hurdle for a kid. Petitions for courage and patience would be great. Thank you!

6/29 – bluebell passed along a request from grammie winger requested prayers for her husband, Rev, who is having open heart surgery on 7/8 to take care of his aortic aneurysm. Recovery time is expected to be 6-8 weeks.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

2 Corinthians 4:8-9
We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.

Grocery today, then exercise and car wash tomorrow. I hope.

Ah, Parry's "Jerusalem", words by William Blake.

And did those feet in ancient time,
Walk upon Englands mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On Englands pleasant pastures seen!

And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these[c] dark Satanic Mills?

Bring me my Bow of burning gold:
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold:
Bring me my Chariot of fire!

I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In Englands green & pleasant Land.

43 Morning.
Prayers for those asking and those needing but not asking.

On my job front. I don't want anyone to worry about me. I'm almost solvent and could really, almost, possibly get away with never working again.
My wife, however, does not agree with that.

I'm really in no hurry and am looking for that last job that I can live with for another 6 to 10 years. I have eyes on two places right now.
Monday I go see both. One making bullets and one making AR's.
I'm torn between finding a shithead job to just do and being willing to take on 'sponsibility type stuff. I did Administration at my last place (someone saw something in me I never did) and really turned out pretty good at it.
It's been a month and the yard is cleaned up now so Monday I get off my ass and do something.

59 The final words of Jimmy Cagney's Cody Jarrett in White Heat are usually misquoted as "Top o' the world, Ma!" But he actually says, "Made it, Ma! Top o' the world!" before the exploding fuel tank consumes him.

The film is the best cops-and-robbers movie ever made. Oddly, it was written by the two guys who much later created Charlie's Angels, Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts. A classic, and it should be. Cagney deserved an Oscar nod; did he get one? Come to think of it, did he ever win an Oscar, or even get nominated?

74 What did confederate soldiers drink?

Lets Ask AI !!1!

Substitutes for Coffee:
• Coffee was scarce during the war, leading soldiers to find creative substitutes.
• Confederate soldiers roasted various ingredients to make a coffee-like brew. These included rye, rice, sweet potatoes, beets, chicory, peas, dandelions, acorns, and even peanuts3.

In summary, Confederate soldiers relied on whiskey and other spirits for both sustenance and comfort during their challenging wartime experiences.

I'm increasingly viewing the world through spiritual lenses. Leave out politics, personalities, and just focus on the big picture.

If we start with the foundational belief that all love comes from God and that He moves in ways we cannot fathom, the "dam bust" was inevitable and it was always just a question of timing. Biden himself has profaned the Host many times, blasphemously crossed himself when referring to abortion, so his continued torment in the public eye is right and just.

The cabal of evil people desperately trying to backstab one another is likewise predictable. The key is to keep praying and focus on family, parish and community and let the talking heads continue to tie themselves in knots.

115 Like everything else, there is a web page devoted to that. Or at least an article or two.

Coffee was a serious issue for the Rebs. The embargo or Union blockade saw to that. It disappeared virtually overnight, and cost a fortune when you could get it. Coffee substitutes - Kentucky "coffee tree" or Chicoy, well ... acorns roasted .... that ain't coffee.

What the Rebs did have was Tobacco, and that led to both Union and Confederate trading parties, which were discouraged naturally. There were a couple notable battles where the Rebs routed the Yanks, and along with that, the supply trains and depot stores of things like Coffee, which they enjoyed very much.

Confederate soldiers wrote home about Coffee in their letters, that's how important it was. They would search for spilled roasted beans. Soldiers on either side who halted even briefly on the march were sure to get a fire going to get a boil on. The problem was, an order to halt might not last long enough to get a good pot of joe going, and worse - you can't get back on the march with a pot of half done coffee, it will spill. Be careful!

Nepotism is the correct answer. The early generations did even know what film was, but they knew business and how to please a crowd. They hired the best, particularly emigres from Europe. Add in people who had lives outside of show business and you get great works of art.

That lasted into the 1980s because the kids who grew up on the classics wanted to build on that, but by the 1990s it was all who you know, and so we have box-checking numb nuts and perverts who hate the audience and can't write dialog beyond self-inserts of anxiety.

fwiw they tried to force the coffee sellers to adopt a "proprietary" system so you could only use their machine with the approved pods, but that is easily defeated. 125 59 The final words of Jimmy Cagney's Cody Jarrett in White Heat are usually misquoted as "Top o' the world, Ma!" But he actually says, "Made it, Ma!

When you are ready to take it to the next level, may I suggest you listen to some podcasts (start with the earliest) from these two Orthodox Fathers as they discuss the spiritual world through the lens of the Orthodox faith. I'm not Orthodox, but they have a very rich history in church thought on the matter and consider books like Enoch and other non canon church texts.

It is definitely eye opening, mainly because the past century or so of culture shift towards Materialism that has effectively erased what was the common foundation to civilizational thought.

The Sharps company offered a rifle that had a grinder in the butt of the rifle, but it was never an issue item. In testing it was found to be extra heavy and not terribly useful. The grinder was advertised for grains, corn and coffee. Can you imagine trying to operate the grinder in camp, or having the handle come adrift in battle so it could clobber you when marching or shooting?

Using our "They Live" spirit shades, we can see that the core weakness of the Dems is that only one can wield the Ring of Power at a time. While they could band together to drive Trump out, it was inevitable that they would turn on each other because they are at their core, selfish, wicked individuals.

Students of history will recall how the Popular Front in Spain swept to power in 1936, went on a rampage of destroying businesses, assassinations, and emptied the prisons before the July Rising.

Predictably, the hodge-podge of alphabet groups fell upon each other before in May, 1937 because they hated each other more than the Nationalists.

Slowly, slowly, slowly I've lost a couple of pounds. If I eat a hot buttery bagel while I sip the coffee the taste is not too bad. The half and half was 40 calories, the sugar 32. Three cups of coffee per day times 72 less per cup equals 216 less calories per day. Every 20 days equals a pound.

I think it was Jane D'oh who was the diehard black coffee drinker who got on me once about adding cream and sugar. ((Miss her))

The early episodes are great, and the D&D stuff is funny and appropriate. They probably should have wound it up after two years because they were running out of material and so started doing a more blatant advertisement for the Orthodox Church - which is fine, but if you want to rip on Catholics, at least get your facts straight and be consistent.

I mean, I get it. The great thing about being Orthodox is that you get all the traditions, saints, Church Fathers and sacraments without having to give up your anti-Catholic hate. But it does get tedious.

The oddest sort of "tea" is to make it out of the newest blackberry tips you can find. I pick mine out of the thicket on the back fence. It vaguely tastes the way blackberries smell, and has a decent mouth feel. It isn't offensive and it make boiled water less boring.

Every day DOCTOR Jill and Hunter tell Joe big lies reduces the amount of sympathy Joe will receive when he does resign. Those two either don't realize it, or they don't care as long as THEY can continue to live in the White House.

Does Joe's personal doctor, Kevin O'Connor, now still believe his official statement in February, that Joe is fully capable of performing the duties of President? If not, what is he going to do or say about it? He is a retired U.S. Army Colonel. What does he see as his duty right now?

The annual NATO Summit will be held next week in DC, Tuesday through Thursday. I believe this is why on Thursday the Dems gave Joe four days to prove himself capable of the job. If Kamala is inevitably going to be President soon, it would be extremely helpful to her to attend this summit as POTUS. I do not like her politics but do want her to be capable as possible at some of her tasks, for the good of the nation.

I recently discovered an espresso roast and ground coffee can make a decent cup in a minute and 30 seconds. Place a large tablespoon of coffee in a mug with cold water. People are social creatures, and they natural prefer people they know (or who have person references) to complete strangers.

The problem with "meritocracy" is not only that it is just as easily subverted, but it also breeds that sense of unearned superiority we've been talking about. If you were hired because your brother is president, you know how you got there (and how you could be bounced).

But the "meritocratic" hires are starting to think they're some sort of Ubermenchen, and the lessers deserve the crumbs.

TL;DR - it's a fallen world. Pray more.

270 Taylor did something really cool for guitarists. "Fire and Rain" is a popular tune for fingerstyle guitarists who want to learn Travis style guitar picking. It's one of those things that takes 10 years, and then it's easy.

Well there are plenty of guitar lessons on "Fire and Rain" on YouTube, some of them are pretty good. Guess what, James Taylor decided to make his OWN video on how to play it. He even installs a camera INSIDE his guitar, so you can watch how he picks the pattern. Completely unnecessary really, but he breaks the entire tune down, and you can see how he does it.

One thing he does, he makes the "A" chord shape very much different than most. This makes hammering on the note possible, a distinctive thing about the tune. His finger style has been described as "Watching a Spider play Twister" LOL, it's true.

Mark Knopfler made a great point about changing up Sultans of Swing one time at a concert. He told his wife that nobody liked it, and she said "They came to hear their song." We still have a Facebook group. Nobody is really ever on FB but every now and then someone will find a photo or something and post it. And the. There’s a 2 day, 200 comment discussion about how awesome that time was.

This was a late 90s/early 2000s timeframe. Tech start up. That group of about 100 of us we’ve all orbited in each others’ circles over the years. Even today I can call up most of those guys (and they were almost all guys, hateful I know) and said I need a job is your place hiring, I’d have a job within a week.

It was a special place and time. Bunch of 20-somethings who had no clue what we were doing but somehow made it work.

We should pray for them to repent their sins, and seek to redress all the evils they have done. Until that point, I have no sympathy for someone who sins, keeps sinning, celebrates sinning and wants to persecute people who share their nominal faith.

422 I have long thought that Stephanopoulos was sent out to administer the coup de grace to Biden.

It seems that others agree.

After watching the 23-minute interview, it was obvious that Stephanopoulos was sent out to stab Caesar to death on [pre-recorded] television. There's no other way to spin it. After the interview, ABC political hacks piled on. Rather than reassuring skittish Democrat operatives (let alone the public) that Biden is fine, it reinforced the narrative that he is too old and feeble to remain as the nominee.

On Thursday, my esteemed colleague Stephen Green wrote:

Some argue that Stephanopoulos has been brought on not to help Biden but to commit the System's coup de grâce and "rhetorically assassinate" their flailing POTUS. Let George trip him up a couple of times in front of the TV cameras, the thinking goes, and even DOCTOR Jill Biden will have no choice but to relent and tell Joe to go Full LBJ.
