The Morning Report — 7/5/24

BidenandStepph.jpg

Good Morning Kids. Hope you all had a happy and festive Independence Day. It's natural as we get to be of a certain age, to look back on our younger days and of happier times. For me, I came of age in the late 60s and early70s and so the Bicentennial was one of those events that I can distinctly remember, as it was both smack dab in the middle of my high school years and then about a week later, a memorable road trip with my dad to visit relatives in Chicago.

Despite the rampant commercialization of the day that was ever-present and almost inescapable wherever you turned since even before New Year's eve '76, there was still a definite sense that people were sick and tired of the 60s, ready to move beyond Vietnam and had a general distaste for the hippie generation. And yet, 48 years later look who the hell is running the country, and steering society and culture. Along with the bicentennial, the other seminal event that occurred four years later was the US Olympic hockey team winning gold in 1980 by defeating finland after first gaining a huge win against the much feared and vaunted Soviets. And then came Ronald Reagan and what should have been a complete rejection of the failures of Leftism. But still, look where we are.

And two years from now The American revolution will be 250 years in the past. How will it be celebrated, or the question is in fact will it even be celebrated? Given the fact that we have academics and politicians who believe that this nation is both illegitimate and evil and ditto its founding.

On this Fourth of July, we are in another civil war (dubbed by me more than a decade ago as the Cold Civil War), this one a duel to the death between the Nation and the State. Here, and all across Europe, the Nation must win, regain control over the State and, if necessary, dissolve it. As history shows, it's easier to disestablish a form of government -- the French are on their Fifth Republic in the same amount of time that America has had only one -- than it is to kill a nation. But make no mistake: that's the goal the International Left has set for itself since Lenin was a pup. The tide is now running in our favor; celebrate our national birthday by acting accordingly.

YEs, as my dear friend and friend of the blog Michael Walsh underscores in yet another fine essay is that much of the Western world and even here in America have woken up to abject failures and intentional destruction of society. Yet the election results in both France and the UK and even in places like Poland and Hungary seem to fly in the face of that observation. Will Biden's corpse or whoever it is that replaces him also defy what most seem to feel will be a stinging rejection of institutional leftists come November?

Another miracle happened on July 4th of 1976 which had us glued to our TV sets and still echoes today, 48 years later.

For those of a certain age, the word Entebbe is instantly recognizable.

We all know about July 4 and the amazing miracle that happened on this date 248 years ago in Philadelphia. Bur some of us are old enough to remember another July 4 miracle that happened not in 1776, but in 1976. It was not in Pennsylvania but in Uganda, and it's something we should all be aware of in this world of hostages today. . .

. . . The entire operation lasted 53 minutes.  All seven hijackers present at the airport, and between 45 and 45 Ugandan soldiers, were killed.  Of the 106 hostages, three were killed, one was left in Uganda (a woman who had been taken from the airport to a hospital on June 29), and ten were wounded.
On July 9, the United Nations convened to condemn Israel for the attack. But thanks to the strength of Britain and the United States, no official resolution was passed.  Europe and America were unified in condemning the terrorists, and effusively praised Israel for her strong actions, swift and decisive response, and for not surrendering to terrorists.
But as we have seen since Oct 7, that Western support for decisive action agsinst evil that existed in 1976 has been replaced with a sympathy for the terrorists today.  Praise for Israel as a defender of freedom has been transformed over the last 48 years into an overt anti-Israel hatred of Jews worldwide.  Commitment has been replaced by capitulation.
America's Founding Fathers courageously acted on their faith and dedication to freedom 248 years ago with the Declaration of Independence.  Israelis acted with that same commitment to protect freedom 48 years ago today in Entebbe.  We all need to emulate their courage and commitment in every aspect of our lives by being and acting as proud Americans every day.

Have a great weekend.

    ABOVE THE FOLD, BREAKING, NOTEWORTHY

  • Michael Walsh:What this all boils down to is simple: across the Western world, there is an ongoing war not only between Left and Right, but more fundamentally between those who believe in the power of the State versus those who defend and cherish the rights and prerogatives and histories of their Nation. For countries begin not as political entities -- political entities called States -- but as Nations, rising up from a people united by blood, faith, languages, culture, and philosophy. Some leftists refer to America as a "notional" nation, but that is historically untrue: the United States was founded in principle and practice almost exclusively by white Protestant men from the British Isles, sons of the Enlightenment who cherished right reason, Christianity, English culture, and who spoke the English language.

Some TV has always been frivolous but during that period at least a few memorable and worthwhile shows. In addition, the Holocaust miniseries and Herman Wouk’s War and Remembrance. You could actually learn a little history watching TV when I was in junior high!

'The Conspiracy of Silence to Protect Joe Biden The president’s mental decline was like a dark family secret for many elite supporters.'
"Those who encountered the president in social settings sometimes left their interactions disturbed. Longtime friends of the Biden family, who spoke to me on the condition of anonymity, were shocked to find that the president did not remember their names. At a White House event last year, a guest recalled, with horror, realizing that the president would not be able to stay for the reception because, it was clear, he would not be able to make it through the reception. I had been married 1 year and we were living in Pretoria. My in-laws from Southern Illinois came over for a month or so to check out how their daughter was doing with this guy they'd only met a week before the wedding and that was it (we flew to London on our way to South Africa the next day).
Entebbe? I first landed there in 1950 as a small child, after an amazing three day flight from Rome in a DC3, with many stops. Again in 1956, also from Rome but this was a day flight in a BOAC Bristol Brittania - more civilized.
Over the years we would visit Entebbe anytime we went to Kampala for whatever (we lived in Jinja and then Tororo while in Uganda).

148 There shouldn't be such rancor about measurement systems. I like to look at it a though we're spoiled for choice.

English for discreet transactions, or things you need to eyeball and get close enough (halves and thirds are easy to handle), like small scale trade, cooking, etc. Metric for stuff where you need precision and relative amounts don't matter, like medicine or science experiments.

Why be annoyed that we have two systems we can switch between to best suit the task at hand? It's like bitching about knowing two languages, or hating that your neighbor has a pickup truck *and* a motorcycle.

240 Who will soon-to-be POTUS Kamala nominate as the new VP for the next 6+ months?

The Dems will want a new VP ASAP. Without one, Speaker Johnson is Number 1 in the line of succession. That will be intolerable to the Democrats. Approving a new VP requires a majority vote, not 2/3, in each the House and Senate. Can the House Republicans hold together and block the approval of a new VP? Would they? Should they? Would that be a bad political move right now?

Kamala will not want an interim VP that overshadows her. Not Newsom, nor any of the persons being floated as Biden's replacement at the top of the ticket for November. Will Kamala's new interim VP run as Kamala's VP on the Dem ticket for November? Who will really make the interim and Dem ticket selection(s)? Kamala or the DNC?

May you live in interesting times, indeed.

282 I grew up and have lived with both metric and imperial (as well as the related US) systems, plus Science, so I really don't care which system is in use as long as it's consistent. So this is really silly:
Do you want to build a 12ftx16ft shed or 3.6576m x 4.8768m shed?
Posted by: Thomas Bender at July 05, 2024 07:49 AM (XV/Pl)

If you were in most other parts of the world you would be building to slightly different dimensions, say, 4m x 5m (13.12' x 16.4'). Now go order those in feet.
Also 3.6576m is 365.76cm or 3657.6mm. This would be reduced to 3658mm. Easy isn't it?
Now do 13.12' : 13' 1.44" -- what's 0.44 of an inch? Yeah, a bit harder without a calculator.

I don't know why we have this aversion to anything that's not from the US. Even the US system derives from the Imperial!
I was living in South Africa when there was the switchover to metric. Everybody panicked but within a month shopping was back to normal as people got used to a different standard, one that was much easier with which to calculate as well.

318 There are still some things rooted in tradition that even the left is wary about changing. I think that might be part of the issue the left is having with *biden and Harris. It would upset a certain age demographic (including Olde Guard Democrats.)

Maybe they really don't care. Maybe it's just simply a couple factions fighting for supremacy. Whatever the case the Democrats, and by extension, us are now in uncharted waters.

Yet, I think the left will ultimately do whatever has the best chance of either; screwing Trump over and/or retaining power.

The Tory party has been split since WWII between the wet faction and actual conservatives. The wet faction, other than Margaret Thatcher's era, has dominated because that is what the big money interests wanted in an era of the EU.

Starmer's problem on rejoining the EU is that it isn't looking so bright either. Germany's economy is in the toilet and the French economy is already swirling around the bowl. The Ukraine War ending cheap Russian gas and losing exports/investment from the Russians while sending billions to the Ukraine is not particularly a recipe for economic success.

Rejoining the EU would probably require another national referendum which Starmer would want to avoid as long as possible due to it splitting his own party. Look for subverting it via the Northern Ireland portal and agreements instead.

That isn't a useful test. It will be 33°C around here today. 30°C is great for swimming and boating - except up North where it would be considered hot.

Its better not to think in terms of conversion, but to immerse in the temperature scale and learn to associate a particular number with what is "normal" for your particular environment/climate.

100°F was determined, probably because it is a large round number to be the marker for Too Hot. I see Texas weather reporting "Number of Days 100°F or greater" as if that means anything. Maybe 30°C is that arbitrary number too.

I would suggest not applying tired political nostrums based on the Cold War. Simply put, the political battle is between globalists and nationalists. The globalists are currently running much if not all of the old political parties because that is the way financial oligarchs want it. A borderless world because it means they can suck the marrow out of nations before they disintegrate into anarchic messes fighting among themselves.

New feudalism more or less with a rigid class system but without the ameliorating effects of religion.

My guess is that DeSantis does not want it. Cleaning up after Biden will be a shit show and DeSantis is best to leave that unpopular task to DJT and run unspoiled in 2028.

Running with Trump means that DeSantis would be tarred with a loss if DJT is cheated again and if Trump wins, be overshadowed as VP.

From Trump's viewpoint, DeSantis adds little to the ticket electorally and Trump does not want another Pence situation where the VP office was the center of the internal resistance for national security and economic policy.

More likely to be someone who has a self effacing personality but an effective manager behind the scenes. That requires a certain degree of humility and managerial skills best exemplified by the gubernatorial wing.

If Trump decides to go political with his choice, then he will pick someone probably from the congressional side of the party. They would be expected to be the attack dog of the administration and not a manager (Spiro Agnew for example).

It does not prohibit this. It's a constraint of the Electoral College that electors cannot cast votes for President and VP that are both from the same state as themselves. That means in this case Florida electors could choose to vote for Trump for President or DeSantis for VP but not both.

They’ve been worse than our GOPe. Sadly Farage didn’t have the ability/charisma to take over that party like Trump took over our GOP (well… he’s made a good start but nowhere near finished)….. eh who am I kidding. Just yesterday celebrated slapping them around…

Easy enough solved. In 2000, both Cheney and Bush were Texans. Cheney simply reregistered in Wyoming and claimed that as his residence. Problem solved.

Trump has multiple residences if really wanted DeSantis to be VP. I think there is too much history there along with differences of policy goals for either man to want to cohabit.

406 I remember the Bicentennial as well. I was a law student then, spent the summer doing legal research for a law prof. I drove up to DC from NC to watch the fireworks show on the Mall and then partied in Georgetown afterward. The thing I remember most is not the fireworks, but my adventure drive home to NC after midnight. Out of cash and very low on gas, I had to take backroads home to avoid the tolls that were then set up on 95, especially in the Richmond-Petersburg sector. Coasted home on fumes.

Anyway, yes Americans were tired back then...of the 60s violence and the Vietnam War, and of the Watergate drama.

Americans showed their displeasure a few short months later by electing Jimmuh Carter President. I learned then to never underestimate the voters' ability to make terrible decisions at the polls, making their lot worse.

A lot has changed since 76, but that baseline of American voter stupidity has not. The voters went all in on Stupid again in 2020, and could easily screw themselves over yet again in 2024, especially if the Regime installs a different D nominee.

414 Donald Trump Seems Healthier Than Biden: He’s Not. Donald Trump is IN MUCH WORSE SHAPE than Biden, something that most of the media has largely ignored. He has received a pass despite numerous instances of his saying bizarre things (sharks or electrocution), getting simple facts wrong (mistaking Nikki Haley for Nancy Pelosi) and his frequently slurring words.

Dr. John Gartner says..."Trump appears to be showing gross signs of dementia. This is a tale of two brains. Biden's brain is aging. Trump’s brain is dementing."

for Trump to have the energy he did have during the debate, he was jacked up on speed, probably Adderall. In a classic case of projection, Republicans suggested that Biden would take something prior to the debate to enhance his performance.

Trump is obese. He eats crap. He is a Diet-Coke addict. He is reportedly incontinent from all the speed and cocaine he took over the years and needs to wear diapers. Biden may have a stiff gait when he walks, but he is trim and rides a bike for exercise.

A doctor friend believes that Trump has also been suffering from mini-strokes and doubts that Trump will even make it to election day without a major health event.

It makes sense for him to consider Youngkin because Trump wants to win Virginia so badly. I consider Youngkin as a darkhorse that has been asked about it. He might have said no though. Could have been something similar with DeSantis as they quietly met a couple of months ago.

Since the disastrous Thomas Eagleton nomination and the immolation of Dan Quayle, presidential nominees need months to conduct deep background checks for running mates and to find out any hidden landmines in choosing them.

Not a particularly good position either to run for the brass ring as President successfully in your own right as VP either. Most VPs as nominees lose when running on the own aside from GHWB.

The sad truth is no one really likes Newt for much of anything and like a lot of former academics, he can be directed into rather stupid and indefensible situations like sittting on a couch with Nanzi Pelosi and discussing green nude eels. Like Sam Adams, Newt was a brilliant revolutionary in his time in destroying an ancien regime but he was incapable of building much of a movement himself because ego and personality.

We shall see if Nigel Farange is different because from what I have seen is that he has a similar personality type.

Good. The most sensible choice.

540 Vance. He’s got a US Grant look who I always believe was an underrated President another good-for-nothin hillbilly from central Ahia with a serious drinking problem.

Hey, I'm already voting for him. No reason to talk after the sale.

“Space Force adds Stoke Space and Blue Origin to its list of smallsat launch companies”

I have much more confidence in Stoke Space actually placing a sat into orbit. Their engine design that also becomes part of the heat shield for reentry has potential to improve the efficiency of launches by making the entire second stage reusable. Even SpaceX isn’t there yet.

Those little hops that Blue Origin takes with rich tourists should not count as “launches”
They are more concerned about using law fare to attempt to limit launches by companies that are actually getting the work done.

542 Jim Harbaugh for VP.

We’d lose Ohio

Harbaugh was born in Ohio. The "other" Ohio.

543 can someone explain how to avoid the VP-from-Florida problem? The electors cannot vote for two people from Their own state, so picking DeSantis or Rubio would seem to mean surrendering Florida's EVs, which is obviously a non-starter.

When I see this brought up, someone usually says "they'll find a way around that." What would that way be? Having Trump reclaim NY residency? Wouldn't that just open the door to more legal challenges?

Genuinely don't know the answer to this.

544 531 Trump's VP should be someone with zero affiliation with anything political. Perhaps some old geezer with only 4-5 years to live and no fucks to be given.

Put that guy in charge of cleaning house.

A great ideal!

545 Thanks, J.J. 🙏 Good morning, all.

The 1960s and 1970s were chaotic & violent, i.e., the Entebbe raid on our Independence Day. The Munich 1972 Olympic Game when 8 Palestinian terrorists invaded the Olympic Village & killed 2 members of the Israeli team & took 9 others as hostages. In the rescue attempt, the hostages, 5 captors, and West German policeman were killed and then Olympics took a day off to mourn. The assassinations of John F. Kennedy (1963), Malcolm X (1965), Martin Luther King Jr. (196 and Robert Kennedy (196. The Civil Rights and Anti-War Movements of the '60s. And, we yet we celebrated a good & promising Bicentennial for our nation.

"And two years from now The American revolution will be 250 years in the past. How will it be celebrated, or the question is in fact will it even be celebrated?"

It will! See American 250 org, a National celebration years in the making, and its National Programming ‘playbook’ for America’s 250th just rolled out July 3, 2024.

CNN, The same Joe Biden suddenly looks different,
Analysis by John Harwood, Aug. 14, 2022

(In part) "Joe Biden is no more or less capable a president than he was two months ago. His staff is no more or less competent.

But suddenly, images of Biden as a feeble septuagenarian atop a mismanaged White House have given way to those of an experienced leader, smiling behind aviator sunglasses, whose battle-tested team has delivered on a range of national priorities. A winning streak does that for you."

Recycled theater for YEARS. "Voters aren't electing a president, they're choosing a presidency!" they WILL say.

I'm more interested in how it will be spelled:

"Semiquincentennial", "Sestercenteniall" or do we make the jump to "Quartermillenial" ?
