Plus: The Fake Conservative Party, UK Branch, Gets Rekt In Elections

Polling just closed in the UK. They're going to announce the exit polls any minute. I'll post a link when they do.

Ooof-- Labor expected to take 410 seats. The Fake Conservatives, who went into the election with 350 seats, will fall to 130.

Reform is only projected to pick up 13 seats.

Scotland's SNP, which used to be the party of Scottish independence but was transformed by Nicola Sturgeon and her racist Muslim successor into the party of shaming white people and trans extremism, will drop to 10 seats. It had had 43 seats, and the great majority of the 59 Scottish seats.

I heard that the Fake Conservative Party promised that immigration would drop to 10,000 or so per year. Last year: 600,000.

This had to be done. They had to be destroyed.

From andycanuck: Time to say goodbye.

Rishi Sunak @RishiSunak 9h
The polls are open.

Vote Conservative to stop the Labour supermajority which would mean higher taxes for a generation.

Jason Osborne @JasonOsborne_GM 8h

What an inspiring final message on voting day from the conservatives, in an age when things worth conserving are vanishing before the public's eyes:

choose us because the other guys will raise your taxes.

Sounds like a party I know very well:

24 Willowed, re: musicals: I don't mind musicals. Hell, I played Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls in high school, and will always love the songs and lyrics from that. But so many of the ones I'm acquainted with do not have songs that send you out of the theatre humming the tunes, or even one major song. All the songs in the Buffy all-singing episodes sounded alike.

That said, the movie musicals Cabaret and Saturday Night Fever, and the songs intertwined in Elvis's King Creole, make sense. All three are dramas rather than comedies, and all three have their songs limited to actual music venues rather than, say, the middle of a street. No suspension of disbelief required. And Travolta's Tony does not sing, he dances.

Posted by: immigration, not taxes, is the issue at July 04, 2024 05:17 PM (TtsS5)

41 Should have closed the parentheses on my previous - sorry.

There was a time in the UK when middle class and working class Brits voted for Labour Party candidates because they perceived them as a rejection of the aristocracy and the class system in Britain. I doubt it's that way anymore, and the current incarnation of Labour has little interest in the issues affecting normal people.

But the class thing over there - it is so entrenched. Brits "read" one another and decide how to interact with them on that basis. As Americans, we really throw them off track because most of us don't share those prejudices and treat all people the same way.

Hugh Laurie (I think) once joked that, with the proper Oxbridge accent, the right clothing, and the confidence of the aristocratic class, you could pass through customs at Heathrow while carrying a tactical nuclear weapon.

So yet another good reason to revere the Founders for taking us out of that social matrix.

American ache for that class system here. (You even used the Marxist term “working class” which suggests hyper evil rich people need to be brutally killed because they never work.). The Founders may have taken us out but the Left wants us in it.

How? By taxing people so severely and punishing them for wanting to better themselves, people learn to SHUT UP and KNOW THEIR PLACE and reject any aspiration of moving upward. Not to mention the American obsession with “class “.

Stand up for all the things the Rebellious Colonialists did, in 1776.

Revise the Declaration of Independence to fit the situation there, Declaring the Citizen as Sovereign; independent from and free of the State, other than the "powers" lent TO the State for minimal governance.

Run on Individual Freedoms, Rights and a wholesale rollback of Taxes. Add in Secure Borders and a "No Work, No STAY" hard-line law for any "immigrants".

THAT would gain some Voter Turnout there, I'd think.

Oh, and restore the daily shot of Rum to the Fleet.

There is a theory that just such a deluge happened and flooded settlements on the shore of the Black Sea, thus giving rise to the Babylonian (and later Hebrew) stories of a world-ending flood. If there were settlements in the Mediterranean basin, and stories got out from survivors or witnesses about that colossal flood, that would do it too.

There was never any chance of any other outcome, realistically. The only good thing is that this is the absolute death of the Tory (conservative) party - analogous to the GOP-e here. Taking over the UK is a hopeless task; they are guaranteed a long slow decline, economically and in every other way. Labour is going to be hated in less than 12 months of running the place.

Posted by: Tom Servo at July 04, 2024 05:29 PM (S6gqv)

65 One thing the UK needs to consider as well: becoming a federal nation instead of the unitary nation they have today. Scotland and Wales already have their own parliaments, England may as well have one as well and they should decide what parliament has control over what. And maybe even have a single document to spell it all out.

In re musicals, Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood starred in a musical. Not a particularly entertaining one, but starred in it they did.

"1776" has the novelty to it that every song in the film directly relates to the drama of America making the choice to become a sovereign nation or to the social and personal issues of the Colonists at that time of choosing sides. The comedy within it derives from the actual lives and personalities of the Founders, warts and all.

I'll turn the temp up a bit and the fan speed down when I go to bed, and have the floor fan blow cool air into the bedroom. I ought to be comfortable enough to go work out tomorrow morning.

78 And remember no election was necessary until December. This was a totally unforced error by the Tories. Well, the final one. All they needed to do was to say “you know what? Mass migration is over. If you want to immigrate here you better have a damn good reason for doing so and you’ll be lucky to be one of a 1000, or maybe even a HUNDRED immigrants to this country. Oh, and WE will decide if we want you or not.” But no, that was just TOO HARD. Reap what you sow, Tories.

103 American ache for that class system here.

Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33

Good points and quite true. The term "working class" is the one the Brits themselves favor, and it's one that was more or less imposed on them by the old aristocracy, who had nothing but contempt for anyone willing to get their hands dirty doing a job, or anyone that operated a business of any sort.

I like a water tap approach. (As I was brought into the world by an immigrant, I approve of immigration. BUT…read on.). If the economy can support 100K immigrants, great. If we can do without immigration at all because things suck in the country economically, sorry, but the USA gets first dibs, and if we DO allow immigration, it has to be beneficial for both sides. We get someone who wants to bust their ass here and may even be highly educated; they succeed in the country and boom, all is good.

Oh, and I do not think it is too much to ask that English be the official language here. Having our own Quebec or Belgium here appeals to Leftists and others. It has zero appeal to me.

Nigel Paul Farage[c] (born 3 April 1964) is a British politician and broadcaster who has been the leader of Reform UK[a] since June 2024, having previously been its leader from 2019 to 2021. He was the leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) from 2006 to 2009, and 2010 to 2016. Farage served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for South East England from 1999 until the UK's withdrawal from the European Union (EU) in 2020.

A prominent Eurosceptic since the early 1990s, Farage was first elected to the European Parliament (EP) in 1999. In 2004, he became the president of Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy. Farage was elected UKIP's leader in 2006, and led the party at the 2009 EP election, when it won the second-most votes in the UK. He stood unsuccessfully in Buckingham at the 2010 general election before he returned as UKIP's leader that same year. At the 2014 EP election, UKIP won the most seats in the UK, pressuring David Cameron to call the 2016 EU membership referendum.[2][3][4] At the 2015 general election, Farage was an unsuccessful candidate in South Thanet

She had to learn English the hard way: by going to school and being immersed. Her mom and the school just looked at her and basically said “tough shit kid, welcome to America.” Which is probably why she would go off on her kids for using poor grammar or spelling things wrong.

My mother was from western Canada, so English was her first language. But she too was tough with my brother and me about grammar and spelling. yone else share the tradition of watching "1776" on the Fourth of July? Somewhat flawed for history purists, but accurate in all the ways that count, and a mixture of high comedy and moving drama, ending with the somber reality of the leap of faith that the American Revolution constituted.

My professor of Colonial History saw "1776" when it was a stage show on Broadway. She said that during the musical, two little old ladies in front of her were talking, and one asked "Do you think they'll vote for independence?"

That's how it was 30 plus years ago: the process for immigrant visas often took seven to 15 years. I worked on cases that were 13 years old, and those people waited in war torn countries until they were called by the embassy to be interviewed, their backgrounds were fully checked, assurances that they would not be financial burdens on the citizens of the United States, and that they had the intention of becoming naturalized American citizens. And every last one that I dealt with could not wait to take the oath to be "an American." They loved the US and what she stood for. I was proud to be the one to give them the final papers to get on the plane. And now... I honestly don't know if that even happens now.

205 What's happened in the UK eleciton is what would be happening this November in the US if the "RatherTrumpers" were successful in beating Trump in the primary. But instead of a huge portion of the conservative voter base voting for Reform party as a protest vote, they'd just stay home and not vote at all. An important point I want to make here is that its not enough to be "based" in policy and action, but you need to be based in attitude and persona, projecting masculine and confident leadership, which Nigel Frage certainly does whereas DeSantis always came across as a pretender imo (talking about personality here, not policy). I think we'll do fine in November, with Trump having coattails to pull over the finish line more than a few close races, but going forward I sure hope the party promotes the likes of JD Vance and Vivek R., as just having the same policies as Trump isn't going to keep his coalition together and motivated.

...reporters "are now expressing regret... now admitting they were 'turned off' from exposing his mental decline before last week’s debate in part because of the attention it has got from 'right-wing media'..."

Then, as videos repeatedly surfaced showing the President confused and fragile, the media declared them “cheap fakes” and attacked Fox News and other outlets for airing them even though Fox noted that the clips were unedited. Virtually every news outlet aired the attack with politicians, pundits, and celebrities attesting that the President was sharp and engaged.

Seems they disbelieve FoxNews so much, they actually ignored the truth.

the first part is true, and provable, the second has not been proved, though it would solve some questions about the rising temperatures between the older and younger Dryas glaciations.

Blocking the Drake passage would rise the global temperature, until there was enough melt to raft it off and break it up, afterwards the global temps would then plummet again.

Starmer last year said the UK needed to "wean itself off" China on issues like trade, commerce and technology"

"Defence spending -

A strategic defence review would be carried out within the first year of government to set out a path to an increase in defence spending to 2.5 percent of GDP."

the Eastern Washington scablands and the gullies into the Columbia canyon show scouring and deposition ridges equal to massive flows of water, and the scouring is incomplete, as if it only lasted a short while. The Grand Canyon does not have those features, but instead appear to have been worn away slowly without a lot of water coming in over the canyon walls.

Geology as a science, though it moves faster than continental drift, tends to be fairly static in theory, there may be indications of a fast creation of the Grand Canyon, but I have not heard of any, and I like that sort of thing.

Thanks - I wasn't sure when that occurred. Ever since hearing about the Chicxulub Event and the likely mega tsunami that followed, I've had a slight bit of nervousness about living in a state whose highest elevation is 806 feet above sea level, especially since most of the state is significantly smaller in elevation than that.

IIRC, the Grand Canyon was progressively cut by the Colorado as the now Southwest US sloooowly raised-up as part of the crazy plate tectonics-driven mid-continent formation of the Rockies. I cannot recall the name of the huge plateau, that is similar to the even huger Tibetan Plateau

325 I live in the central Willamette valley and it was flooded during the Lake Missoula floods, with erratic rocks being rafted down in icebergs in the flood. I was digging clay last winter and found some blue and yellow clay, that when I washed it out to get the shale and the sticks out of it, left a small deposit of sand and grit on the bottom, which appeared to be a mixture of rounded quartz, jasper, and some green stone sand grains. The closest quartz to here is about 80 miles away in the Cascades, so I suspect the clay is from one of the bergs washed down in the Lake Missoula floods. The altitude of the hill site was about 100 - 150 feet above the level of the Willamette river, and about 5 miles away from the river. It was a very big flood.

Amazing, how anybody still pays attention to "538", after 2016.

There's no reason why anybody who voted for Trump in 2024 wouldn't do so again, and plenty of reason for those who didn't to wise up.

It's hilarious that he's giving Trump a "52%" chance, when everybody else - especially the Dems - are speaking as though a Trump victory is inevitable, even as they rail against it.

Trump was up by a solid margin in PA in 2020 (but it was stolen, obviously). It's undoubtedly bigger now.

2016 was set up to be stolen as well. As Gen McInerney told us, "It (the steal) was stopped". As youknowwho told us, "they never expected her (Hillary) to lose".

Probably, the 2020 steal was allowed to happen, for strategic reasons (and Continuity of Government kicked in), and the 2024 steal will be stopped, just as the 2016 steal was.

Posted by: runner at July 04, 2024 06:35 PM (V13WU)

You forget that the May 3, 1979 general election came after the “winter of discontent” and the no-confidence vote forcing PM Callaghan into an election. That 76% percent participation rate is not surprising under those circumstances.

frankly, the tories were so far to the left (in addition to beclowning themselves), the new labour leadership is literally to the right of them on SOME issues.
the reason for this is labour kicked corbin and other marxists-leninists out and managed to create a competence facade.
but, i am pretty sure it's just a facade. farage needs to work on destroying the tories and replacing them. unlike in europe, the electoral system doesn't allow for 3 large parties, and in most cases not even 2.
