State prosecutors quietly announced the plea deal during a hearing last week in Arlington General District Court, which is just an eight-minute drive from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport where Brinton stole a Tanzanian female fashion designer's luggage containing her custom designs six years ago. According to prosecutors, Brinton entered into an adult diversion program, which requires him to undergo mental health treatment, write a letter of apology, and complete 50 hours of community service helping the elderly. As part of the deal, the charges against Brinton were amended from grand larceny, a felony offense, to petit larceny, a misdemeanor. The agreement allows Brinton--who made headlines in June 2022 as one of the first-ever nonbinary gender-fluid federal appointees--to escape jail time in a case that could have resulted in as many as 20 years imprisonment, according to Virginia sentencing guidelines for grand larceny. The agreement marks the third time Brinton has been able to escape serving any jail time for stealing women's luggage from airports.

Interesting but it's probably standard language when it comes to scheduling a hearing that might end up becoming moot.
But as I mentioned in my comments on the last post, this whole thing is giving me vibes that they are looking for an off ramp. At least someone with pull with the judge is finally seeing that this whole thing is blowing up in their faces.
I'm still skeptical that will be enough to slake their hate for Trump and need to punish him no matter what, but we'll see.

That is exactly what the article at cnn is saying. They allowed evidence into the trial from when Trump was President acting in his official duties and had hope hicks testify about conversation she had with Trump while he was President. I am not a lawyer nor did I stay in a holiday inn express last night but even to me that seems to be a reach.
But if the judge and prosecutor are looking for an off ramp on the disaster they made in trying Trump then I am all for it.

I was immediately taken aback by the visage of the most powerful leader in the world declining the false authority the Roberts Court's rogue efforts created to shield Trump from legal consequences for his actions.
It was stunning and inspiring to watch. I'm not sure how many viewers appreciated that principled and selfless gesture for what it means for the defense of our democracy.
Biden, as president, is planting shade trees for America that he'll likely never sit under. That's a beautiful and heartening thing. I've never seen a leader like this in my lifetime.

Biden might be the most decent, grounded person to ever serve. Taking nothing from Carter or Obama. He is a man of ethics, believes in this country, and not lining his pockets.

The movie was sort of good. The thing I love about Fielding is his love of his own people - good, bad, ugly and indifferent. The guy was a Judge, too. Seems hard to understand a Judge who loves his people, high and low, but it comes through in his writing.

I like it a lot but the story is a French cuckoldry story aimed at Vichy France that projects French sins on the British. This, to me, tarnishes the film. Other than the oiliness of its origins it is a magnificent movie.

This is a serious attempt to obtain a mistrial- not because Trump’s team asserts his personal checks were “official acts” (which I erroneously assumed to be the argument), but because Judge Merchan, over Trump’s lawyers’ objections, allowed the prosecution to introduce evidence of Trump’s official acts to support a guilty verdict with respect to private acts.
In the Supreme Court’s immunity opinion, Chief Justice Roberts rejected the argument that a jury should be allowed to consider a president’s immune, official conduct in deciding whether he is guilty for non-immune, private conduct. Roberts wrote that allowing official acts, immune conduct to help secure a conviction for unofficial acts, “will heighten the prospect that the President’s official decisionmaking will be distorted,” thereby defeating “the ‘intended effect’ of immunity.”
