I have a thought experiment for you. Imagine that instead of a lane in the middle of this artwork, it is a river. And imagine that to the right - beyond the wall - is the coast. Would the otters you like be in the river or in the ocean?

48 Mr Mannix,
Sea otters live in the sea. They harass stoned surfers and steal their surfboards. They spend 99% of their time floating o their backs, foraging for shellfish and looking adorable.

Nasty evil aggressive river otters live in the river and spend a fair amount of time attacking people on land. They stink, are devious assholes and disrupt the ground nests of waterfowl and kill baby ducks.

He's there. There's an art technique called "pentimento," which is the repainting of a scene over a prior scene. This is usually in modest scale - moving a hand or a tree or whatnot - but is sometimes larger, including the repainting of an entire artwork. Pentimento is usually only discovered with either the destruction or restoration of a painting, but can now be detected with advanced imaging techniques. What lies beneath can be exposed with X-Ray and other sophisticated technology.

What has been discovered is that virtually every great work since the famous "Nekkid Lardass on Ottoman" was created starts out as a copy of that work. The artist paints a copy of this seminal work, then whitewashes it and paints his own scene on top of it.

All paintings are "Nekkid Lardass on Ottoman" if you peel back enough surface layers!

73 Interesting: In the world of Atkinson Grimshaw it is always autumn or winter, always evening, and the rain has just passed through. In his pictures people are sparse; the streets, docks and bridges are emptying; the roads are muddy; and the lights in houses and shops are coming on. Above all, the moon always shines down, through either mist or high, broken cloud, lightly dousing everything with a wash of mystery.

If there are narratives to be found, then Grimshaw doesn’t explain them. His solitary wanderers, farmers returning home from the cities, and women of indeterminate status – they could be lovers, servants or prostitutes – walking along quiet lanes or by the walls of big houses, are there to add piquancy. He made pictures as invitations for the viewer to project stories of their own. . .

78 continued. . .Grimshaw’s story is itself a very Victorian, Dickensian one: he was an artist from the north of England who transcended unpromising beginnings to find success through hard work and sheer cussedness; he painted the industrial centres – especially the ports – where many of his clients made their wealth; he amassed a tidy fortune and lost it in enigmatic circumstances; he rose in society, knew many of the greatest artists of his day, but after his death he drifted back into near obscurity. He left no papers, his private life remains largely unknown, and few recorded comments are attributed to him.

105 Oh, more about Grimmy:

As an artist, too, he was quintessentially Victorian; his styles encompassing the period’s full range of fascinations, from pre-Raphaelite nature-miniaturism and fairy paintings to aesthetic movement girls in interiors and Whistlerian river scenes by way of classical tableaux that bear the stamp of Lawrence Alma-Tadema. If he wasn’t as good as the best artists in each of these fields, then as the maker of atmospheric night pictures he was peerless. As his friend Whistler, not a man given to humility, once said: “I considered myself the inventor of nocturnes until I saw Grimmy’s moonlit pictures.”

Grimshaw’s lack of formal training led him to some innovative touches: he would mix sand into his paint to give his light effects added sparkle, and would often use a camera obscura or photographs as the basis for his work to overcome the difficulties of mastering perspective. Indeed, he would occasionally go so far as to paint directly on to the photographs himself, a trait that caused some critics to question whether his works were paintings at all.

Thanks for introducing me to a new artist, CBD!

106 Yesterday's art was horrid. Today is a baby-step better. Still, romanticizing a landscape in a fallen Empire seems to be a futile effort. Walls on both sides of the road to keep out the riff-raff, rape gangs in Rotherham, non-existant dental care, fat British tourists on beaches around the world, what is left to celebrate?

145 Thanks to a trove of previously unpublicized law enforcement records and interviews with several players involved, Headline USA can reveal that the [2007] Orlando neo-Nazi rally was indeed organized by the FBI. The Orlando event also seems to have been part of a larger program to hold Nazi rallies across the country. And according to FBI records, the bureau sponsored those events despite knowing they led to an increase in the number of card-carrying Nazis in America.

Moreover, the FBI’s Nazi rallies led to a much larger operation to target right-wing groups. Dubbed “Primitive Affliction,” the operation featured a motorcycle front group, rogue undercover agents, Outlaw bikers, Satanists, bomb-makers and a fugitive on the lam in Mexico.

To top it off, the FBI’s Nazi operation was briefed to the highest levels of the bureau, including to then-Director Robert Mueller, according to at least one record unearthed by this publication.

182 Thanks to a trove of previously unpublicized law enforcement records and interviews with several players involved, Headline USA can reveal that the [2007] Orlando neo-Nazi rally was indeed organized by the FBI.

282 254 Lost in the immunity news yesterday was some bad news. Scotus once again ruled that the govt can abridge free speech as long as Facebook and Google do it for them.

Posted by: Biden is Finished

Need to go back and read the decision. Scotus punted the Florida and Texas social media laws back to district courts for full trial inquiry instead of injunctions. Same as the Missouri case. Typical media misreporting including conservative media. Simply put, temporary and permanent injunctions have a high bar on issuing injunctions and the preference of Scotus is that they not be issued willy nilly.

You have to have irreparable harm, a clear injury in fact, and the likelihood that you will prevail at trial. So the Missouri case goes back to trial court for painful full discovery from the social media and fedgov over their censorship relationship. Trial court after the trial including witnesses can reissue the injunction and appellant courts may no longer inquire into the facts--just the First Amendment law and whether the remedy propounded by the trial court is reasonable to the injury inflicted.

Don't take counsel of your fears.
