The Ace of Spades Pet Thread

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Your regular hostess at this time, KT, is under the weather and she asked if I could fill in. Yes! Always happy to help KT.

Just a friendly reminder, no politics or current events here.

302072084_5383348311711116_1183863215609949375_n.jpg

Although KT has taken over the AoS Pet Thread, I still receive emails from pet owners and animal lovers. Here is one I recently received from a Lurker who provided no nic.

Sammy Smiling.jpg

I'm just a lurker, so keep me anonymous, but hopefully you enjoy my story below and my photo for the Pet Thread.

Not sure if MisHum is still running the Pet Thread but if not, I'm sure this will find its way to him somehow.

Finally, for KT since I'm emailing the Pet Thread anyway, I've attached a photo of my princess, Sammy the Corgi. She's been featured once before a few years ago but she's overdue for another appearance.

Thanks for reading!

From Blog pal, isophoroneblog......

Everything you wanted to know about catnip, but were afraid to ask. Or something like that.

Catnip actually repels mosquitoes from cats.
Catnip is best known for producing bouts of euphoria in cats of all sizes, from house cats to their big cat brethren (including bobcats, jaguars, and lions). In addition to giving felines a healthy release from stress and anxiety, however, some studies show it offers up an additional perk: repelling mosquitoes. Related to mint, basil, and lemon balm, Nepeta cataria (aka catnip) emits a chemical compound called nepetalactone when crushed, which naturally wards off some mosquito species. What’s more, catnip-addled cats often chew and rub the leaves into their coats, an action that (unknowingly) spreads the natural bug repellent around.

That's it for the world of animals and pets. Here's hoping that KT quickly recovers. Thanks for stopping by today.

Because from sheer happiness, I can't help myself from repeating that Phoenix, George and Puff were examined at Texas A&M yesterday and found by echocardiogram and EKG to have normal hearts. There is no restriction on their activities, thank God.

We were apprehensive that they might share the dilated cardiomyopathy that killed their brother Spark a couple of weeks ago, as it's a genetic condition. We've been feeling a lot of stress over this, which is now relieved.

Brother Zeus, currently living in California, is coming to the shows in Houston in July and will be tested the Monday after.

17 the new cat, Magic, is learning to be an outside cat. He found mice last winter and this spring he discovered snakes. So far he has brought in 13, that I have discovered.

Last week he came trotting in with that "I have prey" walk, and I went to try to save whatever it was. I discovered that for some reason he was carrying a green apple, and was proud as Punch to have caught it.

The apple trees are dropping off extra apples, it is what happens in early summer here before they start getting big and ripe. I guess one bounced next to him, and he caught it on the bounce.
I never had a cat who insisted, on catching the feather on a string, that he was going to carry it off as a trophy. He feels the same way about apples, I guess.

21 You can also use catnip for dogs, my wife's daughter claims it calms the high strung dogs down a bit.
I also dried some for herbal tea, it doesn't do anything for me, but it is a nice change from lemon balm and mint when I am done drinking coffee for the day.

I spilled a cup of it once, and dried it up, and when I came back from throwing the towel into the laundry, I found one of the cats rolling in the damp spot.

29 That image of the guy and his passed puppy on the bench triggers a neurotic question for you all. My last dog was the first ever that I had from puppyhood (rescue) until death. I felt she and I had a bond and she was very special to me. Our current dog is phenomenal and we absolutely adore her. My wife always says things like "you're the cutest thing ever", "best girl ever" etc. and I sweet-talk her (the dog lol) all the time as well. However, I sometimes feel a twinge of guilt and refrain from saying "ever / all time" or anything like that; it always reminds me of her predecessor (heck I sometimes tell the current one about her). I know it's highly neurotic and kinda ridiculous but it makes me feel like I'm slighting my lost one.

Does anyone else ever feel this way? I know it's crazy, just that pic made me think about it.

Mrs. E saw a miniature longhair dapple dash-hound a few weeks ago, tried to con me into this new dog scheme. Thing is, when Pepper dog passed away age 18 last July, it damn near killed us. Madison T. Cat took it bad too. So we got Minnifer the mini-cat for Madison. Madison don’t like her. Because Minnifer’s a cat, not a dog. Like Pepper, who raised Madison as a dog. Think that’s complicated? Pepper was raised by cats. I think somewhere in there’s a case study. Wonder can I get a grant?

I have been feeding my cats a quarter can of Friskies Pate every evening, a 16th of a can in the morning, and Purina kibble to get them through the rest of the day.
It seems to be doing them good, they are all 14 or so, except the new one.
I also can ground chicken and pork and I will vary the morning feeding with that instead, they seem to like it. It is made without any salt or seasoning.
It can get hard to get cats to drink enough, since they get most of their water by food. I leave a bowl of water out to degass the chlorine, with a pinch of salt to try to kill any bitterness of the tap water. I am also told by my vet that fish is an issue since it can promote bladder and kidney stones in the cats too.

There are sources online showing the nutrition of various cat foods, I chose my feeding based on one of those, and from pricing.

I don’t know how much work you want to put into this, but to introduce cats with minimal drama, you should quarantine one, usually the new one, in a room for 2 weeks. Let them sniff under the door, trade out toys so they smell each other for the first week, and then in week 2, you have to get creative and create a barrier where they can see each other, but not get to each other. Let them do that a little bit at at time, and then slowly allow them to spend time together. If they hiss, that is okay. Only intervene if there is actual pouncing with malice, not play (🤣, otherwise let them sort out the hierarchy.

78 I thought about my cattledog Blue, about whom I could write an entire book. When he finally failed I wept for weeks.
Not ashamed in the slightest.
He came to see me, in a dream. He ran up to me, fully capable, not weak, next to a limitless clearing. He looked at me, smiled, and ran off into a mist.
The Cloud.
I was kind of offended. That's it?!

79 These two know of each other. Trouble comes in at night in cold weather. I bring Fanny back in the bedroom with me and Jake. It works out okay as he goes out in the morning. Fanny likes to move around and sleep in different spots in the house. Trouble doesn't really want to stay in but does like to come in and eat. He just forgets that there's another cat in here.

I think it's best to go very slowly and don't have any setbacks. She's 12 and set in her ways.

She also sleeps next to my head on the bed.

81 My cats eat better than we do, though I am going to start making my own due to Bidenflation. They get 2 separate types of freeze dried raw, and beef and chicken from Smalls. They don’t like turkey and I don’t feed fish. They don’t like it anyway. They get venison freeze dried raw, rabbit, and chicken on rotation. Oh, and bone broth. But not animal versions. Oh no. It’s made for people bone broth or it’s not getting consumed.

If my cats were normal, sticking with Smalls would be fine. But they eat A LOT. They are big, they have a lot of serval in them. I have to add taurine for them as a result as regular cat food doesn’t account for this. Sometimes I feel like I should just put half a buffalo carcass on the kitchen floor once a week.

85 We had Nyah when we got Kovu, who was a menace from day one. He quarantined in my daughter’s room (and as a result, loves her so much it’s insane. They FaceTime now). We really tried to do the 2 weeks thing but Nyah kept opening the door and letting him out. We finally just gave up. Kovu ended up being twice the size of Nyah, but she had put him in his place so often as a baby he just bowed down to her.

89 With Sabi, it was totally different. We quarantined him in J’s office, and I slept on a blow up mattress. Kovu did not care there was a kitten. He did not sniff under the door. Nothing. He would just growl like a rabid monster when he saw him. After 2 weeks of swapping toys, etc, Sabi could finally come out without Kovu threatening to kill Sabi, but Kovu wasn’t about to play with him. Kovu got sick right after with a kidney infection, which didn’t help. He really didn’t want anything to do with this Tasmanian devil kitten. So my very old GSP literally sighed got up and raised the kitten to the best of his abilities. I swear this happened, the sighing, you could just tell he was thinking “well, guess someone has to raise this thing because it’s out of control right now”.

I'd have joined in earlier, but I had a long, rangy, fourteen-pound black cat on my lap. It's either him or the computer, I guess.

Dr Fausti, about special bonds with former animal friends . . . I had Arizona the big red part-Coon tabby for sixteen years, from his kittenhood to the very end. Our relationship was special. But I still think with great fondness of all the others who have followed him, and I consider big black Stirling here to be one of the greats. I don't really feel guilty for it; it's not as if Arizona could know.

Still, you feel what you feel; there is nothing wrong about it, or about relating in a new special way to your new dog.

I mean really fearless.
They need a job employment to keep them occupied. Some are incredibly smart, Blue had a memory like a steel trap and could recall markings on horses after 3-4 years.

Dagny the little Siberian girl is somewhat aloof, but she's almost always in the same room with me, and loves to have her bellt rubbed and be petted. Now and then I find her sleeping with me. After two years, still no lap time, though.

Stirling the big black is very attached, sleeps with me nearly every night, has been curling on my lap multiple times a week, and again is almost always in the room.

Cats show affection; it just may not be in ways we humans recognize.

The Vicksburg shelter were a little more civilized than that when I went to meet and adopt Stirling. Miss Linda says, "They brought him out, put him on the counter, and pretty much said, 'Here he is. Howdy, LN,

I don't think Miss Linda will worry about it. I could sort of see a rambunctious big dog knocking a gun off a table, say, but cats? They love to push small objects off tables, but a heavier thing like a loaded gun is something else.

I owned a Ruger Single-Six back in the Eighties and a Remington Nylon 66 rifle too. Neither Mrs. Wolfus No. 1 nor No. 2 worried about them and the cats.

One thing I don't do is gloss over their faults. Arizona was difficult about carriers and strange people, Marie was noisy, Oreo had occasional litterbox issues as she got older, etc. I remember them and honor them as they were, not as perfect faultless friends. 155 Hadrian: Are you still able to show and breeds the dogs with a genetic disposition to bad heart? I ask because I am the proud owner of a Persian cat with a pedigree that out does the House of Windsor. He's shedding all over my apartment because his ears failed to grow properly. Instead of normal perky cat ears, his ears are just a couple of half developed stubs. His breeder was ready to spit nails. Hersh was the exact color she had been breeding for, and to my knowledge, he meets every other breed standard. But Mary Jane couldn't show or breed him for fear the defective ears would be genetic. And, no, he's not a Scottish fold or anything like that. His ears are simply these nubs.

156 I had to put my best friend down today. It had gotten to where she could barely breath and she could no longer swallow. Her nose was dry and cracked from dehydration and she gagged and drooled all morning. She tried to eat grass but I had to pull it out by hand as she was choking on a ball of grass as big as my fist. It was time.

I got her just a few months after my wife left in 2010 and took my boys. She was my only real friend during the lowest period of my life. She was my constant companion and kept me warm at night. She was 18 months old then. She would have turned 15 years old in August. I could not continue to watch her drop weight and slowly, painfully make it up the steps one at a time because of the arthritis in her shoulders any longer. She always really enjoyed eating and, finally, this morning, she couldn't even do that anymore. I finally realized I was being selfish because I couldn't bear to let her go. It was time to man up and say goodbye. I will never forget my little girl and the unflinching loyalty and happiness she brought me when I needed it the most.
