Happy Summer and all that BS Morons. Before we enter the Prayer Revival there are just a few housekeeping matters to take care of. (Rulz for those of you in Potosi, WI)

1. This is an open thread, please feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate.
2. Be nice to one another. It's troll month somewhere.
3. No running with sharp objects. No is there any glassware near the Barel.
4. Have a nice weekend.

A Big Thank You to Annie for the Weekly Prayer Request.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

5/22 – Vmom stabby stabby stabby stabby asked for prayers. She has been in the hospital since Monday with sudden dizziness and emesis. They’ve ruled out stroke. They have noticed nystagmus and it might be BPPV. She is scared she won’t be able to function anymore.
6/1 Update – Vmom sends thanks for the prayers while she was in the hospital last week. She is so grateful to be home, back at work, and going to vestibular rehab therapy for her inner ear woes.

5/23 – Olddog in mo could use some prayers. He is going in for surgery again at 10 am. Squamous cell carcinoma under the tongue. It is not a good location due to the proximity to a salivary gland.
5/24 Update – Olddog sent his thanks for the prayers. Surgery went better than expected. No skin graft and so no overnight stay. Flash biopsy was negative.

5/25 – Matthew Kant Cipher requested prayers for his older brother, who was admitted to the hospital with a bowel blockage. It doesn’t sound too serious, but one never knows. He also sends prayers of gratitude for each reader, and for all His incredible blessings which surround us. May our eyes and hearts be opened to clearly recognize His love for us.
6/1 Update – His brother’s hospital stay was brief and his bowel blockage resolved itself naturally. The Horde prayers were answered and are most sincerely appreciated!

5/25 – Tonypete asked for prayers for an elderly neighborhood couple. They are in failing health and abilities. They insist on living independently, yet they can’t do it. Tonypete and his wife are torn between respecting their wishes and privacy, but there are numerous LEO wellness checks each week.
6/8 – Tonypete and R have been subpoenaed to give testimony at the competency hearing in a few weeks, called by the elderly couple’s children. The elderly couple is still fighting against going to an assisted living facility. It’s just a very sad situation.

5/25 – Mindful webworker sent a prayer of thanks for the prayers of the Horde. He is alive and 90% well and 100% grateful for that. He will have more surgery ahead. He also sends thanks for MiladyJo’s hip fixes seem to have worked very well with no complications. She is getting around fine, which is such a blessing after her long time of pain and mobility limitations.

5/25 – Cybersmythe sent word that he got a job! It pays well, but it’s by the Space Center (100+ miles round trip and the traffic sucks). It should be interesting work.

5/25 – Neverenoughcaffiene asked for prayers for all people affected by the barbarity of Hamas.

5/25 – NaCly Dog sent an update, that his wife (who we prayed for last month) is almost back to where she was before she broke 4 ribs.
6/8 – NacLy Dog sent thanks to the Horde for their prayers.

5/25 – Martini Farmer asked for prayers for his grandson, who will probably not graduate from high school due to poor grades. His family is (to put it nicely) “dysfunctional”. He will be here for about a month before summer school, and will be at a non-woke YMCA camp for 3 weeks. Hopefully his perspective will change.

5/25 – Tecumseh Tea gave an update on Pastor Joe, who we prayed for when he had brain surgery in February. He recently had an MRI, and his doctor is very concerned. He has to go for more tests. Please pray for him and his family. His answer to how he felt about this new development was: “In the words of King David, May I dwell in the house of the Lord forever”.
6/5 – Tecumseh Tea sent praise to God that Pastor Joe’s recent concerning test results turned out to be an infection, which is being treated.

5/25 – R posted that he got a call from his doctor’s office that recent tests found blood …. uh…. where it shouldn’t be found. Now he has more tests coming.

5/25 – Nurse Ratched sent thanks for the prayers from a couple of weeks ago. She is healing nicely.

6/1 – Polliwog the ‘Ette requested prayers for her sister C, who has surgery to remove some ovarian cysts and anything else in there that looked suspicious. Now she has to wait for the pathology report, and recover, which is complicated by her being extremely allergic to “all” opioids. Also, she is the family’s main earner, and her disability will only cover about 40% of what she brings in.

6/1 – Tonypete asked for prayers for his BIL, who is cognitively disabled. He lives alone and normally does pretty well, but recently quit his job, which has led to issues: namely money. Social services are involved, but it isn’t going well.

6/1 – G asked for prayers for healing and strength for Uncle Joe. Joe’s wife of 50 years passed earlier this year, and now Joe is having painful back problems. He is in pain and lost without Sally.

6/5 - Teresa in Fort Worth requested prayers for friends, Chris and Debby, whose 22 year-old son (Jeremy) passed away this week. Jeremy choked on food at his daytime facility. He had Down Syndrome and autism, and was non-verbal. His parents know he is in a better place and finally free of his health issues, but they still could use comfort.

6/7 – Village Idiot’s Apprentice posted that his radiation oncology follow-up went well, and he is cancer free. He will have to do surveillance bloodwork for the rest of his life, but that’s okay!

6/8 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers for her friend and running mate, P. She has been in the hospital in WI with bleeding ulcers. She is doing better now, but still needs additional healing. Thanks so much.

6/11 – Sponge clarified the prayers needed for his wife, “The First Lady”. She has breast cancer, and the initial prognosis is good, as it is Stage 1 and caught early. It is an aggressive form of cancer, and but it is the most common, so they’re feeling good about her full recovery. They meet with the surgeon next week and will know more after that.
6/20 Update – The meeting with the surgeon was moderately frightening, as she ‘s been declared Stage 1B ,which means it’s a relatively aggressive form and can spread quickly. Her surgery has been scheduled for the end of July, but they don’t know the severity of that surgery yet. There are more tests to do and will meet with the oncologist. Thanks for all the prayers.

6/14 – Perfessor Squirrel requests prayers for his friend from church. Jimmy has been suffering some issues with his lungs and could use prayers for healing.

6/15 – Jewells posted that she has decided to end her cancer treatments. She had 6 months to go on her 2 year palliative care program, but the chemo drug is ruining her quality of life.

6/15 – Grumpy and Recalcitrant asked for continued prayers for J.J. Sefton of the Morning Report. He is about to begin chemo and radiation therapy.

6/19 – DangerGirl lost the SanityProd requests prayers for her father, who was admitted to the hospital with respiratory issues. He’s been struggling for the past year, on and off, with shortness of breath and could use prayers for both healing and a proper diagnosis. (The doctors can’t figure out what is causing it.) Thank you!

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

For what it's worth, my late wife had shortness of breath and wheezing for a few years, to the point we took her to the hospital. It was a pulmonary thrombosis. They put her on a load of blood thinners which caused hemorrhaging somewhere and she died.

I cannot speak of electric perk coffee makers.
But stove top, here goes......

Coarse ground coffee.

Bring to perk.........turn down as low as you can go while it perks for 10 minutes.
Take off stove after 10 minutes of perking.
Let settle for 5 minutes.
Voila, great coffee.

35 Kinda good news from my little neck of the woods. One of the kidlets found a new 'mini chainsaw' and bought it. Nice case, two batteries, extra chain, etc. for $20. If we can keep it going for this season, it will have paid for itself 10x over. I have some kind of vicious tree-like weed that has taken over my yard and that little thing went right through it. Maybe I can avoid the stern letter from my city this year for high 'weeds'. Although to their credit they laughed at my 'think Midsomer Murders rather than Better Homes & Gardens.'

I have to agree with the Telegraph. Goldfinger set the form for the Bond movies that followed. But the best adaptation and the closest to Fleming's vision (out of the Connery films anyway) is FRWL.

69 Doctor No is my favorite Bond novel, and the film is very very good. It captures that flavor of Bond the professional security officer who is also licensed to kill on assignment. The truly great scene where he coldly shoots the Doctor's henchman who has tried to kill him, a scene not in the book, just sums up Bond for the audience. And there is the peculiar "Dr. Fu Manchu meets science fiction" element of the film and book, a strong and exotic contrast to the first half of both.

Maybe I'd be inclined to say it ties with FRWL for No. 1.

72 I have a small percolator that I used to use when I was single. One of those old octagonal metal Italian ones. It's been descaled and is now utilized as a carafe for olive oil.

I only ever really used it because I love pretty European stuff, and it's just for one guy, so it's decently quick. Aside from the need for electricity, drip coffeemakers are totally better. Faster, easier, better coffee, and the fancier ones even come with a robo-function so your bleary-eyed self doesn't have to try thinking before you get the sauce in you.

But I'm one of the only people under 50 who's familiar with these things. Once the drip coffeemaker came on the market 50 years ago, it annihilated demand for percolators in about the time one takes to brew a pot of coffee.

This is why I always say: if you can't remember your mom brewing coffee in a percolator, you can't remember a time when Joseph Robinette Biden didn't occupy a federal office. I think that little factoid underlines a big problem with our political system.

85 So I was reading an Epoch Times article on how the DEA has arbitrarily side-stepped Congress and unilaterally decided to move marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III drug. That means that marijuana is no longer eligible for mandatory drug testing.... which is causing distress to the Trucking Association because they are seriously worried about driver safety so they are asking not the DEA (who made the change) but the DOT as to how this will effect operations going forward.

I thought as a society we pretty much accepted that changes in the law happened at the political level where people allegedly had he ability to vote the perp out of office. We also understand that no law is passed without some level of graft, bribes, extortion or violence being involved, just for as long as it remained in a relatively transparent Congress and not in the dark recesses of some faceless bureaucracy.

I'm just not comfortable at all with one department making law changes that effect other departments. Whatever happened to "Stay In You Lane"?

There's a wonderful Fleming-like bit in that film. Bond has been trapped in the ski-lift housing. The only way out is along the greased cable. He has no gloves. So he turns his pockets out, rips them off, and uses them as gloves.

Lazenby might well have grown into the role, but we'll never know.

The only truly "Bond" moment I can recall in the Moore movies is in A View to a Kill, when -- after extracting the information he needs from an opposition killer teetering in a car on the edge of a cliff -- he slams his boot into the car and sends the guy crashing down into the sea (or onto rocks, or both, I don't recall). Moore makes you believe in Bond's toughness there as well as Connery would have.

107 Bond info

The James Bond movies have always been controlled by EON Productions, with Danjaq LCC acting as the holding company, but the actual management of these businesses has changed dramatically over the years. EON was originally founded by Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman in 1961, shortly before the James Bond franchise really kicked off with Dr. No. The pair continued to run EON for several years toward the beginning of the series, until Broccoli eventually passed leadership down to his daughter, Barbara, and her half-brother Michael G. Wilson. The rights to James Bond’s character were passed down with them, and they’ve been overseeing EON (and working with Danjaq) ever since.

MGM Studios got involved with James Bond way back in 1981.

For Your Eyes Only is one of the best Bond films, period. It turned away from the excesses of 1970s Bond and got back to the basics. It also gave Moore some of his best scenes as bond, such as ascending the cliff while knowing someone is cutting his rope. The quiet determination he shows is subtle but brilliant.

The scene where he literally kicks a car off a cliff to kill the occupant is Bond at his most savage.

I also liked the nod to his age when the nypho teen ice skater came on to him.

My problem with Thunderball, both book and movie, is that to me Bond is at his best when he's alone, or has one or two helpers -- Felix Leiter and/or the current girl of the story. Bond, all alone except for Honeychile Rider (after the death of heroic ally Quarrel), vs. Doctor No . . . now that's the great stuff. Bond surrounded by Leiter and the US Navy is not quite the same.

It's the only book told from a point of view outside Bond (Bond is actually the spy in the title). 141 My mother started reading the Bond paperbacks when I was in grammar school, around the time of the first movie. One night she handed me Doctor No, open to the "centipede in Bond's bed," and said, "Read that." I did and was hooked.

I wasn't supposed to read the novels, but I sneaked them -- read mostly the action scenes, wasn't ready for the sexy moments yet. But I remained hooked.

142 Dr. No is missing from both top five, which I think is a mistake, since so many Bond themes were established in that move. And, Ursula Andress.

144 I have always put the book near the top of Fleming's Bond work. The book is NOTHING like the movie (literally a whole different story, set on a different continent). It's the only book told from a point of view outside Bond (Bond is actually the spy in the title). It is a little slice of 1950-60s Americana, when the backroad highways were studded with little motel lodges and gangsters were more suit and tie and fewer tattoos.

It is very well done -- a male writer doing a female point-of-view. Maybe he missed the mark, but the fun was in seeing Bond from outside, so to speak.

146 This being the prayer thread, just a reminder to find a stable, regular time for prayer in your daily life. If times are good, offer gratitude, When times get hard, you have something to fall back on and a comforting way to make your requests to God.

The pandemic helped me solidify my prayer life, and I continue to tweak and improve it, such as adding Glory Be to my daily prayers and a Rosary each week. If you can, fit in a daily Mass. I like going to the ones during the school year because the parish kids are a hoot to watch.

I get that the roots of Bond were in single warrior combat, and maybe Buchan books, but most WWII and forward espionage efforts were teams.

For a couple of hydrogen bombs with evil people in control of them, I expect the Armed Forces to make a power play.

162 There’s an interesting Mandela Effect in a Bond movie, concerning Jaws.

If you remember the final scenes in Moonraker where Jaws and his blonde girl are helping Bond and Goodnight escape Jaws smiles at his girl revealing all the metal.

Well, as I remember it, and so do most people, the girl had braces when she smiles back at him. Which works perfectly between them.

But, as it turns out, the girl had no braces but big, pearly, whites only.

I saw this recently on. YouTube video about the Mandela effect and couldn’t believe it as I was 100% sure she had braces because the scene worked so well that way.

163 For Your Eyes Only is one of the best Bond films, period.

Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at June 22, 2024 09:12 AM (llXky)

That teeny bopper ice skater bit was cringe as the kids say today. But I enjoyed For Your Eyes Only and yes, it was more grounded, especially following Moonraker. I give it a solid #2 behind The Spy Who Loved Me among the Moore era Bond flicks.

This idolatry has been noticed, and our collapsing nation is how God calls us to repent. In many areas it is working. Vocations are up sharply and the young people taking holy orders are the polar opposite of the pantsuit-wearing religious "sisters" hanging on from the 1970s or the gay Jesuits.

182 It is a little slice of 1950-60s Americana, when the backroad highways were studded with little motel lodges

There's a history documentary about the true back story of Who Loved Me. A Barney Fife-ish NY Statie got his teeth into a routine stakeout assignment, and recognized a whole slew of big city high rollers arriving at a little motel lodge for a high-level conference. Some of them were extremely wanted men. A good little movie tale in its own right, even without a superspy.

The real hook of Fleming tales is that they're not BS. His family's bank had operated a worldwide private finance intel net, about whose exploits he'd have heard at his mother's knee. Dr No is based on the very real Navassa Island Affair, and you can sail there in a day from his writer's resort at Goldeneye.

When a film changes media different takes can be inserted. It is not uncommon to have one take with braces, one without it.

I'm also going to say that I wouldn't put it beyond youtubers to create fake narratives, especially in the present environment.

We literally have almost the entire American journalistic establishment trying to convince people that Biden is healthy and intellectually sharp and Trump is the one in deep cognitive decline. A video "proving" that your memory of a classic movie is fake fits neatly into this.

215 "Are you SURE you saw Biden stumble and not Trump? You got this iconic scene from a classic film completely wrong."

There was a similar situation with Johnny Carson. Supposedly he had one of the Gabor sisters on and she had a cat on her lap. She asked him if he'd like to pet her pussy and he said: "Sure, if you get that damn cat out of the way."

I recall seeing it on a highlight, talked with kids in the 1980s about it, but we're told it never happened.

However, everyone on the set is long dead, and giving the fleeting nature of the show, it wouldn't be hard for the Carson estate to just have deleted that scene because it made Carson look like a cad. People did tape TV shows, but usually just to watch them later. My father did that, never retaining them, just taping, erasing, taping until the cassette wore out.

219 Good morning everyone! Happy Saturday! Talking things over with hubby we decided to see a different doctor at KU Medical Center for a second opinion. I still refuse to do any more chemo but maybe this lady can come up with something. If not that's okay. I have made my decision and am at peace with it. For the sake of my husband and kids I thought I should at least try.

This is a great example of how we're going out of our way to provoke God's wrath. This man has no accomplishments to speak of, his entire career is based on his very public, open denigration of Divine Law and to top it all off, he actually does interviews highlighting how he purchased another human being for his pleasure.

And this is portrayed as a good thing! How wonderful that he could buy an infant to share his degenerate lifestyle!

The chastisement shall continue until repentance occurs.

Younger one named one of the red sliders; because she's probably near-sighted, always very careful, so I was feeding the turtles and saying, "Come on, stupid, get up and eat your food." So my son started calling her Stupid and it stuck. Did one of those $1 things at the bank once for the turtles; they covered the name a bit with another one so it said "Stu"...

Indeed, and our society fuels this by emphasizing that happiness is only found in material things or inside ourselves, not through relationships, communities and families.

Suicide used to be seen as a great evil, a mortal sin that sent you straight to hell. I think we should get back to that - pointing out that it doesn't actually solve anything and makes everything worse for everyone else.

Where there is life there is hope, and our evil governments want to extinguish both. Humans are vermin, harming Mother Earth who is better off without us.

"Your family wants you dead, here, sign this form. They see you as a burden. Sign the form, it's better for everyone."

297 I rewatched a couple of older Bond movies in the past year or two. As someone above pointed out, they're more like montages of cool scenes tacked together with the thinnest of plots.

The first four seasons of Archer were the best homage to the Bond series ever.

I bought a dvd with the two Flint movies on it. Watched the first one. It's ok. Very cheesy, and frankly, Mr. Coburn is gangly and ugly, and really doesn't come close to being realistic.

I guess it's not supposed to be, but it was probably a lot more fun when it was made. Now it just looks old.

Yeah, but the downside is you're in Kommie Kalifornia.
This morning, a little bit humid, about 65°F right now. High will be around 85°F. Warmest day in the last month or two.

No, you misunderstand. Poles as in Polacks. They got stuck there when their helicopter crashed.

304 Don Black,
I gave up smoking many years ago, and this is what worked for me.

I did it in two parts: first I gave it up at work.

After several months, when that part of the day was craving-free, I gave it up altogether. Then I only had to fight myself in the evenings.

I could never have done all at once, but this worked.

Send-ups seldom do. What was original and edgy often becomes rather dull and plodding.

Airplane! is remarkable because has actually gotten funnier over time. It's more transgressive now than when it was made.

Posted by: BignJames at June 22, 2024 11:09 AM (AwYPR)

Maybe parolees? I mean, the prisoners have already committed the crime, they did the time, they're now being released into society. If they mess up along the way, they get put back in for another stretch, and eventually they'll mess up enough that they'll get the death penalty.

"Listen carefully, very carefully. This is the most important climate change clip you will ever watch - and only 4mins long. Watch and judge yourself. ABSORB the graph shown. THINK on it. USE your brain.

Some reporter asked the High Priest of Global Warming (Al Gore) about ice core measurements and he blew smoke up his ass and left the podium in a huff.

When they won't answer a serious question with a serious answer you know they're full of shit.

308 271 Who among you has experienced nicotine withdrawal
Posted by: Don Black

Quit Kools 'cold-turkey' 20 years ago after falling down the back concrete steps on the way to work, breaking a leg.

I didn't smoke indoors so the leg fx was actually a bit of a blessing because it was tough to be house- &/or office-bound and be able to get easily outside for a smoke.

Found I had to have cold water for sipping all the time and something to occupy my hands - a pencil, pen, keyboard, hammer - and my mind - if not work, a crossword puzzle or bills to write or file - to also occupy my mind as much as possible.

Within weeks, couldn't tolerate the smell of smoking & had no desire to go back, but dreamed for years that I still had my former 2 pm daily cigarette.

A week at a time.
