Kafiyeh-Wearing Rainbow Warriors Bravely Unionize to Get High Wages at a... Coffee Shop.
Eight Days Later, the Owners Close Their Three Coffee Shops.

And then they started protesting outside the now-shuttered coffee shops, demanding the owners re-open them.

The coffee house management released a statement:

It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the closure of all three OCF Coffee House locations. After 13 wonderful years of serving our beloved community, the time has come to say goodbye.

Throughout the years, our passion for creating a welcoming and warm space in our neighborhoods has driven us forward, despite operating at a loss. We pushed forward because we understood the positive impact we were making in our communities and the importance to maintain a level of compensation and benefits (health, vision, dental, life, matching 401k) that each staff member deserved. Rising operational costs, reduced sales and the expiration of a couple of our leases this summer have made it difficult to continue operating the coffee shops, and the administrative and legal costs associated with our staff's desire to organize has regrettably moved us beyond any cost that we could sustain.

Sounds like they were pretty generous with employees -- but parasites gonna parasite until the host is dead.

I've seen this behavior in the comics industry -- low-skilled, interchangeable clerical workers unionized at (I believe) IDW, demanding higher wages at a company that is on the verge of bankruptcy. They even demanded that they be granted veto authority over any comic book IDW intended to publish that they considered politically problematic.

IDW is losing all of its licenses and has been delisted from the stock exchange. It's just a matter of time before it goes bankrupt.

The left is just a cargo cult of very stupid and fundamentally broken people. They do not accept that a company needs to make money before any workers' demands can be satisfied. They view money the way all leftists view electricity -- you just stick the thing in the socket and the money comes flowing out, by magic.

Workers have no leverage in a Biden economy, especially these very low-skilled workers (some of whom allegedly even intentionally drive customers away with hostile antisemitism).

Macklemore is an openly antisemitic rapper. Like old-school Nazi-propaganda-poster hatred for Jews. He just released a full album of pro-Hamas raps.

If you're just hearing about this, that's because the left covers up for its own many, many racists and antisemites.

This is taking place in Philadelphia -- does everyone remember the coffee shop where the bratty (and very LGBT) child of landowning parents decided to boot them out of the space because they weren't turning a profit and the parents got sick of letting them keep the space for zero rent? They got very, very angry about that. They even protested their parents.

Black Orchid explains:

ok so Minas was a co-op cafe - basically one of those very Woke, pay-as-u-wish, head in the clouds hippy operations. it was owned/run by a lady named EJ. her son is trans, that's Kate. they are about as lefty as they come, the whole idea for the place was socialist, etc etc

they employed a bunch of (probably) dropped out former penn and drexel BIPOC students. these employees decided they needed to get reparations in the form of collective ownership of the business - building and all. EJ said "um, no."

the workers grabbed her "daughter" who has some mental issues and made "her" the face of their demands on Instagram. with a series of very bizarre videos where "she" talks quite badly about "her" parents and supports the demands of the baristas. they look like hostage videos.

so the parents were stuck, they closed up shop, and are now putting the building up for sale. Kate is apparently a total mess and sunk into a deep depression, so I am not really laughing at all this. it's blue-vs-blue, yes. but i'm just hippie enough to feel for EJ with everything going on.

it's total insanity, basically.

Okay, okay, okay, now I understand "Kate's" position in this. The son of the owners of the coffee shop, who thinks he's a girl, who is trying to raise enough money to buy the building back so he can give it to the "black and brown" workers who demand reparations in the business.

Philadelphia "baristas" sure seem to have a very exaggerated sense of their economic necessity.

Especially like this rabble-rouser who just shut down three coffee houses with her (or "her") extravagant appraisals of her value in a customer-facing operation:

baristanosering.png

She (or "she") has more metal in her face than the Statue of Liberty.

Would you like your coffee with a splash of accidental nasal discharge? With just a spritz of Hep C?

And wasn't it in Philadelphia where Starbucks, under pressure by BLM grifters, first implemented its policy of allowing every franchisee's bathroom to be used as a hobo's craphouse/traphouse?

WTF is going on Philadelphia? Do they just want to drive all small shops out of business?

Oh right -- it's a Soros Zone. Soros intends to destroy the cities and immiserate the population. But we can't say that because he'll order his paid media shills to claim that I'm antisemtic, even though he's not Jewish and is actually a Nazi collaborator.

Maybe George Soros should open some coffee shops in Philly. And run them on "Soros values," paying "baristas" $50/hour or whatever he claims is a "livable wage."

You gonna step up, George?

Meanwhile, Pizza Hut is in serious trouble.

Best economy in history, Jack!

82 Pizza should be made in real ovens. Most chains use this conveyer-belt heat-blower system, because they don't want their dipshit 17 year old employees sticking their hands in a real oven.

But a real oven cooks dough better. Maybe because of direct transfer from the oven's floor. These blowers just blow heat around the pizzas.

Meanwhile, there are a LOT of very good local/regional chains around here that are doing pretty well.

If you like Pizza hut deep dish, Detroit Style is the superior product.

If you don't like think, crunchy crust, Detroit Style isn't for you.

This is NOT TRUE.

Try "Brooklyn Pizzeria" There's one on FM 1960 at Townsen Rd. Another on Garth Rd. in Baytown. Another somewhere in Sugarland. And a few more (8 in total), but I don't know those.

Fact: They have most all of their ingredients flown in from NYC on a weekly basis.

And they DO sell, by the slice. By the single, delicious, mouth-watering slice.

I took a co-worker there, he's a native of The Bronx. He took one bite of a slice of their Pepperoni Pizza, and said "I've just gone back home!"

Go find the Brooklyn Pizzaria closest to you, and *enjoy!*

233 I've seen this behavior in the comics industry -- low-skilled, interchangeable clerical workers unionized at (I believe) IDW, demanding higher wages at a company that is on the verge of bankruptcy. They even demanded that they be granted veto authority over any comic book IDW intended to publish that they considered politically problematic.

313 The Philadelphia elites are slick, and not all from Philly.

Until other desirable development - the right kind of gentrification - comes along, real estate LLCs often have coffee shops opened in potentially desirable areas of the future. They're charming, draw an interesting clientele, help make a community more walkable, quiet the radical leftists & new americans via jobs and provide a place to see & be seen.

Once gentrification sets in, down go the shops, out go the radicals and new americans - pushed towards the fringes of the city & eventually into the urbanized areas of the ring counties.

>New homes, condos in Philly qualify for a ten year (was double) ownership tax abatement plan. The well-to-do move in, own for about half the length of the plan, then they either sell & move out of the city, often down to the Delaware coast, or rent somewhere else. (Some repeat such moves back & forth multiple times over their lifetimes because Philly isn't outrageously expensive compared to other metropolitan areas.)

Philly may welcome the educated new americans but it keeps the others on a moving (out) cycle, such a NYC practices. (PA's Pocono Mts, etc.)

Easily. Most people in the "obscenely visibly wealthy" category are faking it. To roll like that - designer clothes, flashy jewelry, hot cars, swank apartment, bottle service at the club, etc. - takes serious money. If you're doing that, you're either *actually* stupendously rich and have loads of cash to play around with or you're actually broke because you're spending every penny you own (and probably more besides) just to keep up appearances.

324 It starts out the same as the other plans: a funeral home picks up the body of your loved one from the hospital, or your house, and takes it to their premises. But then it’s different. The funeral director bathes the body and dresses it in a compostable (cotton or something) garment. The family is invited to attend what’s called the “laying in ceremony”. The body is resting on a bed of straw and alfalfa. The family can say their goodbyes, and if they want, add flowers, favorite foods or other organics in. When they’re ready, the vessel is closed and terramation begins."

328 I would not be surprised if a labor charge doesn’t happen, especially if a manager threatened closure during the organizing, but they can’t be forced to reopen, and if they get the right attorney, will be fine.

Or, hopefully, someone was smart enough to get someone else to talk about effects bargaining, which makes the union accepting the closing and just wanting to talk about how to handle the closure itself. Interesting to do this before your first CBA negotiations, but I guess it can happen like that. No need to negotiate if there is no work happening.

Maybe.

I was in a fraternity: Phi Kappa Psi. We supposedly had a unit rule: one blackball in a vote meant no invitation to join (that is, any one brother could torpedo a candidate). But in reality that's not how it worked at all. After a civil war resulting from failure to observe the unit rule, a majority decided to make up the membership shortfall created by those who left (because the unit rule wasn't being observed) by recruiting gay guys. I shit you not. It was plain that I was going to blackball all of these undesirables. And it was equally clear that my veto would be ignored. So I quit. TL;DR: I would not assume that all the girls had a say in membership.

But then again modern feminism says women should "defeat the male gaze" so I guess it makes sense.

Women have been tatted and pierced for centuries. I am not a fan of anyone being heavily tatted, or heavily pierced, it’s just not my aesthetic. But as mentioned, I do have a small stud in my nose. I can also promise I don’t give a low class vibe. Even at my poorest, I didn’t give this vibe.

But to each his own, truly. I am not a raging fem, obviously, and not looking to avert gazes. I mean if you want to gaze at my 53 year old self, have at it! ☺️

There's a specific, recognized/legal manner to measure for heat stress v. employment and helpful guidelines developed.

However, OSHA has recently issued some BS citations for heat stress and would like to spread them nationwide, supporting labor.

Jordan is a nut, imo.

More importantly, I *never* get brain fog anymore. It wasn't commonplace before, but it literally never happens now since cutting out sugar.

Funny. I only recently started getting the nerve/feeling a need to take myself out to eat now and then. I went to a Texas Roadhouse Friday night with a Mother's Day gift card from my daughter and her fiance. Was finishing up my meal when a man sat down next to me and started making small talk. Within 2 minutes he'd told me that he had two businesses. Alarms went off, and I bolted. Not looking for money. Now, if he'd made me laugh? Might've been different story.

That's sad. It was good of you, too.

I've been in bottling plants, up on glass tanks, in forging areas, on manufacturing lines, in firerooms of ships under rehab, etc. and they can be so hot & standing while performing a job doesn't help. I've seen people come from working on top of 'tanks' and, hours later, have heart attacks. Proving a legal relationship is difficult.

There's are decent guidelines for rest periods, cooling rooms/areas etc. There should be fitness for duty PEs for many jobs. Unfortunately, there is only one way to take legal measurements - temperature AND humidity - for 'heat stress,' but that doesn't mean a private employer needn't have a decent Occupational safety and health Program for its employees, including ppe, etc. as applicable.
