There was a 1930s and 1940s Sports announcer turned sort of Ripley believe it or not. Way before my time, but he would talk about a famous person for about 5 minutes or so with all this really interesting trivia, and then spring the name of the celebrity at the end. It was really good, I hear it on old time radio programs.
If you want to listen to old school students/pupils, listen to "Quiz Kids" a popular test questions for children with celebrities in the 1940s and 1950s. Before Jeopardy! there was "Information Please" a radio show in the 1940s with a regular panel and celebrity guests. Tough questions. Posted by: Common Tater at June 19, 2024 08:01 PM (wz2JN) 68

Geese are no joke. They were used as "guards" going way back, said to have saved some roman garrison by sounding the alarm somewhere. I heard they were used at certain sensitive nuclear installations too, fenced in compounds, on top of all the high speed tech.
They don't sleep much, are paranoid, can see in the dark just fine, and will really mess you up when they attack. Make a lot of racket. I bet a lot of farmyard critters are pretty good sentry animals. Posted by: Common Tater at June 19, 2024 08:04 PM (wz2JN) 72

You don't have to eliminate carbs. You don't even have to exercise. In fact, obese people will probably tear something up.
You have to reduce calories, below your maintenance requirements, to lose fat. Anyone can lose a hundred pounds eating nothing but candy bars if they want. You won't want. Figure 700 to 1000 calories a day. Once a day is more satisfying. After a few weeks of this, your liver may clean out enough to function, a little. Non-alcoholic fatty liver is pretty much epidemic with fatties. You don't want this. Burn it off. Posted by: Common Tater at June 19, 2024 08:16 PM (wz2JN) 101

Even if you don't have the Type 2 diabeetus, Dr. Fung's work on fasting is good stuff. It convinced me to switch to a 16:8 eating plan. Cutting out breakfast helped to stop weight gain, and now I'm in the process of slowly taking off some extra weight by cleaning up my lunchtime calorie intake. I don't need to lose a bunch, but peeling off a few spare pounds would be a good idea.

I lost 70 pounds and keep it that way 5 years running by reducing calories. Definitely don't drink any of your calories.
Other than that, eat what you want. You have to reduce calories way, way WAY less than you might think. Nobody wants to do this, but once you get a gram scale and adding up calories you'll see it's true. You will naturally gravitate towards foods that are already high in satiety, or sticking power. Eggs, meat, cheese, mixed nuts. And naturally, if you stick with a reduced calorie daily regimen you'll naturally stay away from refined carbs, because they nuke your daily calorie count without really satisfying. I will eat chocolate or ice cream, pizza, anything. But it goes on the daily count, and there is no nutrition there. No protein, which we need to maintain higher levels of, especially as we get older. Active males easily need close to 80 or 90 grams protein daily, good high quality animal protein. To lose a healthy 2 lbs a week, you need to cut 500 to 700 calories a day. This is daunting. It becomes less daunting if you exercise and burn even 250 calories over what you need to live. This means you can cut 250 calories, which is far easier to manage.
Weight loss is always calories in / calories out. You need to be in a caloric deficit to lose. However, what you choose to fuel your body with does make a difference in terms of energy, healthy skin, healthy bones, building or rebuilding muscle, etc. Journaling food - every darn thing that passes your lips - gives you a good insight into where you can start with minor changes. You won’t have to do this forever, but it is a great place to start. No judgement, just log in an app or on a piece of paper. Posted by: Piper at June 19, 2024 08:30 PM (pZEOD) 122

My point is all the dieting advice I see on boards is everybody making excuses why they can't lose the 100 pounds they are lugging around.
They've had it drilled into their head they have to exercise, or it isn't possible to lose fat. Then they want to argue about it, that somehow they are different, special, or somehow immune to the laws of nature and that reducing calories will cause the metabolism to "slow down" and they won't lose any weight. This is true for a couple weeks, but make no mistake calorie reduction will cause weight loss. In fact, it's the only thing that will effect weight loss. This one feller, the last post he made, was suggesting exercising in bed (because he's too fat to move around much at all) "Gotta start somewhere". Exercise is great, I recommend it, it is synergistic and the rest of it. But it has very little to do with weight loss. It is a red herring, and I get tired of the experts giving out silly advice that nobody will ever follow. "Go run 2 miles! You can do it. When you get back, have an Almond, and a Brussel Sprout Smoothie! Later, we'll have some hackberry toast, and water. In 6 months following our program, you can lose up to 5 pounds!" "To lose a healthy 2 lbs a week, you need to cut 500 to 700 calories a day"
Tell me you've never had to lose weight, without telling me you've never had to lose weight. Some people eat more than 4000 calories a day. The people you see that are really huge, cutting back 500 or 700 calories is skipping a snack. 600 to 900 calories a day (TOTAL, not "cut") is a bit faster than the more moderate 800 to 1000 daily kilocalorie. This takes a while to get a head of steam going, but you will feel it. Once a day is a lot easier for me, but YMMV. 1.5 pounds a week (over time) is really really good. This is an average over many weeks. At first, weight loss will appear rapid, say 3 pounds a week or better, and then slow, or even stop. Thus over time, as the body adjusts to new needs, the average will trend down . 1 to 2 pounds a week or 10 days is typical probably. Remember body fat is 4000 calories per pound. I would suggest that if you are eating many small meals then your blood glucose is always high, and your body will burn the blood glucose instead of breaking down stored fat. this is double if you eat a lot of simple carbs and starches since that breaks down to glucose easily, and triple so if you are drinking sugary drinks because you not only get lots of simple carbs, you also don't feel sated.
An interesting aside, Lipitor/Atorvestatin seems to keep my fasting blood glucose elevated but I don't know if it is blocking conversion of blood glucose or getting my liver to excrete glycogen. Posted by: Kindltot at June 19, 2024 08:43 PM (D7oie) 138

No fat burning occurs unless and until the glucose is exhausted and metabolized - so avoiding carbs altogether makes sense, but it is the calorie reduction that gets you to that point in the first place. This is the big flaw in all the professional weight-loss advice I see.
It doesn't cost any money to get healthy! No programs, no routines, no special meals mailed to you, nothing. I happen to love Pizza, and eat it often. If I could afford steak I'd eat that a lot more often. Get a gram scale and start weighing out your food items. You'll memorize most of it. It sure adds up quick. A sedentary person might only need 1000 to 1200 calories a day, they will start to creep up in weight! You can't outrun your fork, so don't even try. So if you run 3 miles, you can eat 1350. BFD. I'll skip the extra pat of butter, and stay home. What you do have to try, is sane sensible daily meals for the rest of your life. Permanent changes to lifestyle. Reading about the tree pictured above. Very interesting.
"Metrosideros robusta, the northern rātā, is a forest tree endemic to New Zealand. It grows up to 25 metres (82 ft) or taller, and usually begins its life as a hemiepiphyte high in the branches of a mature forest tree; over centuries the young tree sends descending and girdling roots down and around the trunk of its host, eventually forming a massive, frequently hollow pseudotrunk composed of fused roots. In disturbed ground, or where there are gaps in the forest cover, northern rātā will grow on the ground with a normal but short trunk." Posted by: Tuna at June 19, 2024 08:59 PM (oaGWv) 182

May have been mentioned in the earlier thread, but a shout-out to Wayne and Shuster, still laugh-worthy to today's audiences. Yes, they're Canadian, and it was a CBC show, but Commonwealth, right? They're definitely working within the framework of British humor, with a little bit added in from American vaudeville and classic comedy duos like Abbott and Costello.

I'm currently reading Michael Crichton's Next. One of the characters is clearly an expy of Dr. Anthony Fauci. With the added bonus of portraying himself as a holier-than-thou evangelical Christian. He uses "religion" to promote ideologies that many Christians find abhorrent, such as the continued use of embryonic stem cells in genetic research. He lets nothing stand in the way of his lab, his research, or his reputation. Sound familiar? Now back to your usual CAFE shenanigans... 183 The biggest problem people face is not realizing HOW much they are eating.
Example. One bowl of cereal isn't one cup. A standard American bowl is like 3 cups or more. The portion size on the box says 150 calories for one cup but you just ate 3 cups and toast. That's 600 calories for breakfast. If you want to lose weight, you've got 1100 calories left and you just started your day. Posted by: AlaBAMA at June 19, 2024 09:01 PM (8Ldii) This is why you track everything you eat for a week. Everything. No judgements on it at all. But you discover when you are eating because you are hungry, stressed, bored, and how those pinches, just a tastes and bites add up. And then you learn to eyeball. A serving of cheese is your thumb. A serving of meat is the palm of your hand. A cup is about the size of your fist. Posted by: Piper at June 19, 2024 09:07 PM (QzINz) 192
The core problem with suggesting that exercise is exclusively intertwined with fat loss is that
Fat people don't exercise. I mean obese, morbidly obese people. And they weigh so much, tendon or cartilage damage is likely if they try. They get winded trying to wipe their ass. So it ain't happening. What they can do, is put down the goddamned fork. There is no magic involved here. Reduce calories to a level below that what is required for basal metabolism, plus the activity level. Everyone is different to some degree, but somewhere under 2000 kilocalories is plenty. To burn off fat requires very few daily calories at all. This is the problem. Fasting works great here too, because with practice perceived hunger is not a problem at all. In fact it is enjoyable. Mindful eating - carbs will make you feel sluggish, or cloud your thinking. You will naturally start to avoid foods that cause problems, if you stick with your base calorie level. I still like to eat Ice cream - just not the crappy fake shit that passes for it. If I'm gonna sin - I'm gonna do it right, so to speak. You will start to pay attention very closely to what you put in your body. Posted by: Common Tater at June 19, 2024 09:07 PM (wz2JN) 193

My physicians desk reference from 1952 suggests 600 to 800 calories a day for "rapid" weight loss, 800 to 1000 for a more moderate pace. That's the daily calorie count. If someone was active, very active or at work hard it is doable but it takes practice. I would fast at work, skipping breakfast and lunch and often a late dinner.
The latter under 900 calories a day extended periods I suppose, it came out to around 1.5 lbs a week, after 8 months anyway. I think modern dietary advice is written by people who don't know what they are talking about, because they just keep repeating things they have read, but they've never actually penciled it out. It is SIMPLE to lose fat, but that doesn't make it EASY. You are worth it, and you won't have to take all those medicines to treat symptoms that are killing you in the first place. Stay with it, it will work for you. Posted by: Common Tater at June 19, 2024 09:19 PM (wz2JN) 212

Mindful eating - carbs will make you feel sluggish, or cloud your thinking. You will naturally start to avoid foods that cause problems Carbs are fuel and your body needs them. It doesn’t need carbs in the form of a donut. But it does need whole grains, fruits, and veggies. Here is what I ate today: Breakfast was an RX bar because I was running late for my 6a and a latte with cashew milk. Snack was an apple and almond butter (1 med apple, 1 tablespoon almond butter) Lunch was whole grain crust pizza with a little olive oil, garlic, tons of spinach, and some fresh mozzarella. I had 2 slices. Snack was baby carrots. I ate the whole bag, lol. And I had a juice of spirulina, chlorophyll, lemon and water. Dinner tonight was 3oz bison burger on 1/2 of a whole grain / amaranth bun, lettuce and onion, a boatload of roasted broccoli that had 1tablespoon of olive oil on it (divide that by 3), plus salt, pepper and lemon juice. I will probably have a “mousse” for desert - 1/2 serving of kachava whipped into plain, whole milk Greek yogurt. He was in sad shape, and probably in for a good case of hypothermia had it been too much longer. His ski tracks led to the edge of a canyon, but they indicated he was going recklessly fast, as if he was being chased. 1/ Posted by: John Drake Is Now Rounding The East Coast Of The Caspian Sea at June 19, 2024 09:40 PM (u/Zei) 257

"Sitting on your ass is going to kill you faster than a tasty cheeseburger. Go for a walk, ride a bike. Being active is much better for you than sitting on your ass and counting calories"
Yes, that's great in theory, but the real world doesn't wor that way. Fatties don't get active, and they don't count calories. You're telling them to do something they won't ever do, and thus giving them a ready made excuse for failure. I see this all the time. "I now I need to exercise, but my bad knee/ankle/back/neck/hip etc etc." Trust me, they can't move now. In order for them to get healthy enough to move under their own power, they gotta lose a lot of weight. It's an insidious problem, and the calories expended are not enough to move the needle in most cases. They simply are not going to exercise unless forced. Basic Training works great, but that's a different thing. Posted by: Common Tater at June 19, 2024 09:42 PM (wz2JN) 260

Carter was part of a party of skiers, who carefully followed his tracks and could find nothing. Search and Rescue units looked high and low, but could find nothing save an eerie sense of being watched. And the kicker to the whole thing was that an experienced mountaineer told the media, in all seriousness, that "the mountain devils got him."

When I cut carbs my weight loss accelerated. 12/12 fasting accelerated it more. I would have done 14/10 but I have some appetite issues related to medication (really).
I lost 20% of my body weight intentionally and it was almost all of what I wanted to lose. I couldn't really get the last 4 or 5 pounds I wanted but then I got coof and lost 6. The coof weight eventually came back and then a little bit more on top of that but I've been a bit lax with my diet for the last 12 to 15 months. Posted by: ... at June 19, 2024 09:46 PM (lX8VI) 270

Sure it does. You don't have to run a marathon. Start small and keep going. The worst advice you can give someone is that they are just too far gone to move and all they can do is starve themselves when that isn't even the biggest problem. Telling people it's ok to give in to a bit of discomfort is telling them it's ok to nothing other than a diet they absolutely will never do is much worse. Nobody here is going on a concentration camp diet of the rest of their lives but they can be more active. Start small and get bigger. Chasing that figure you had when you were 20 is just going to lead to failure. It ain't happening. Anyone can make excuses why they can't exercise but ultimately it is a choice. A sedentary lifestyle is horrible for your health. Posted by: JackStraw at June 19, 2024 09:50 PM (LkLld) 279

Some had frozen to death after running away from their tents at night out into the wild, others suffered grievous physical injuries which killed them, but not of a kind they could identify with any known animal. Some of the 411 tales are just spooky.
Not really "Bigfoot" but some pretty wacky stuff have been reported by some folks. Both members of the expedition and Lewis and Clark expedition reported hearing what sounded like cannon in the Great Falls region in 1805. Lewis said it sounded "precisely" like a small howitzer or whatever going off, a four pounder or whatever, at about 3 miles distance or something like that. He was an artilleryman, so he knew what he was talking about. This went on for quite a while, and he said if he would have had the time he wanted to investigate whatever it was that was making those booms in the mountains. When he asked the locals about it, they reported the same. Posted by: Common Tater at June 19, 2024 09:55 PM (wz2JN) 289

Main reason is the 400 year cycle of the Gregorian calendar. 2000 was a 400 year leap year, which gave us 8 years straight of leap years. That pushed everything earlier. That's the main reason. I weighed 189 pounds when I started my fitness journey. I am 5’1. I wore a size 14/16. That isn’t just being fluffy. I wear a 4 now. Am I perfect? Not even close. I could probably lose another 5/10 pounds because I am 53 and all that goes with that age, and I had babies. But I am fit, I have definition in my abs where I once had rolls.
