39 A ‘passage boat’ is an old-fashioned word for a ferry: this one is probably the regular passenger service between Dordrecht and Rotterdam, part of the network of waterborne public transport which was such a remarkable feature of life in seventeenth-century Holland. This vessel is a pleyt – a single-mast, sprit-rigged, shallow draught, broad-hulled tub, very similar to a smalschip – adapted to carry large numbers of passengers slowly in calm inland waters.

52 Canada Is America's Least Helpful Ally

The official NATO estimate of Canada’s defense effort is only 1.33% of GDP.
Canada is indeed a middle power, as measured by the size and stability of its economy, but Ottawa’s foreign policy has always been one of free riding on its democratic allies. Canadians proudly embrace joining international organizations that demand little of it.

65 "Passage" is a fun word. The sea lane or route is itself is a "passage." The boat that plies it is a "passage boat." Your ticket on the boat entitles you to "passage." On your way to the dock, you'll probably walk through a hallway (or corridor, or passageway).

You book your passage, then proceed through the passageway to the gangway to board the passage boat to cross the passage.

70 I like what Cuyp does with light and perspective. Also, the natural poses of the people. The distant areas he usually includes have the benefit of stressing the details of the main subject. In this case the way he shows the worn wood of the hulls and the wonderful details of the sails. I'm not familiar with this artist although I can see why he is included in the Golden Age of Dutch painters. Looking at his Wiki page shows a lot of charming scenes done with the same skill and techniques. It will be worth the time to learn more about Cuyp.

Thanks, CBD, for today's art and an introduction to the artist.

The Bechdel Test is stupid and meaningless. It exists merely as a way for bitter feminists to point at normality and call it oppressive. It's utterly irrelevant and pointless.

If a story *doesn't* fail the Bechdel Test, it's because it has characterization and the women in the story actually care about shit like relationships and family. For a natural or realistic story to pass the Bechdel Test, it has to either have no women in it at all (or just one lone woman), or be entirely about a something where romance can never even enter into the equation in the first place without breaking the story.

Bechdel and her stupid test are stupid.

Unalloyed nonsense.

The Bechdel test, also known as the Bechdel-Wallace test, is a measure of the representation of women in film and other fiction. The test asks whether a work features at least two female characters who have a conversation about something other than a man.

If two women appear in a work of fiction and discuss a man, the work fails the Bechdel Test.

196 Dream on, Apu- Congress has no police powers
Posted by: Don Black at June 20, 2024 10:09 AM (/7KEl)

The inherent power of Congress to find a recalcitrant witness in contempt has not been invoked by the House in recent years because of the time-consuming nature of the trial and because the jurisdiction of the House cannot extend beyond the end of a Congress. See Anderson v. Dunn, 19 U.S. 204 (1821). The first exercise of this power in the House occurred in 1812, when the House proceeded against a newspaper editor who declined to identify his source of information that had been disclosed from executive session. 3 Hinds Sec. 1666. Such powers had been exercised before the adoption of the Constitution by the Continental Congress as well as by England's House of Lords and House of Commons. Jurney v. MacCracken, 294 U.S. 125 (1935). Although the use of such powers was supported by the Supreme Court in Jurney, neither House has used them since 1935.

True enough. You can't tell me that Cagney & Lacey, as working cops, *never* talked about anything other than men or babies. Or Rizzoli & Isles. Or the women cops on Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue, and other cop shows.

And I recall an episode of TNG where Deanna Troi wanted to take the test to be a bridge officer, and Dr. Beverly discussed it with her. I don't think any men were mentioned. (Well, Will Riker might have been -- but it was because he was going to be the tester.)

HILL STAFF VIEWS: Most Aides in Both Parties Prefer Different Presidential Candidate

More than three-quarters, 77 percent, of all congressional aides from both political parties who responded to the latest CNCT Capitol Pulse survey said they would name a new presidential candidate if they got the opportunity.

Among Democratic staffers, 88 percent said they would name somebody other than President Joe Biden, while 70 percent of the Republican aides would prefer somebody other than former President Donald Trump.

Community safety requires the community to stop shooting each other.
Housing requires an income

Unions will accept ANYONE that has a required job and can pay dues
