As I understand it, Sabor the lioness does the hunting. Numa the lion has to fend off challenges to his kingdom and females from younger male lions, though. that can't be fun, especially as Numa gets older.

47 The fact that lions are social creatures, unlike most cats, argues that they might be more intelligent than other, more solitary cats. Imagine if they had developed sentience. Africa would be Kzinti-Land!

72 When a new male lion drives off/kills (I can write "kills" on this site, correct? I have an aesthetic problem with the disingenuous euphemism "unalives" and would prefer not to use it) the reigning male of a pride, one of the first things it does it goes around it's new territory and wipes out all the cubs. I was appalled at the barbaric practice when I first heard about it.

Later in life, I myself became a stepfather and, upon reflection, I now consider this bit of leonine culture to be quite a reasonable practice.

75 It was intriguing that Edgar Rice Burroughs gave different great-ape names to the lions, Sabor for the females and Numa for the males. He did not do that for any other animal that Tarzan knew in his jungle world. Tantor the elephant was Tantor no matter what sex the animal was. (I'm not sure Tarzan would have cared.)

Anyway, this is impressive, with the lioness on the left looking a bit smaller (and therefore maybe younger) than the other two, and the male definitely shaggy.

Posted by: BignJames at June 28, 2024 09:33 AM (AwYPR)

You always hear that the males are useless and make the females do the hunting, but Inspector saw footage from an older documentary that showed something different. Yes, the females started the hunt, but when they were having trouble with large prey the male ran in and broke the thing's neck with one smack of a paw.

80 I like how the lone lion on the left is drawn. She's alert and looks smaller than the others. A juvenile maybe? It gives her a playful look. I like this piece. I like how the blue and green are toned down, so they don't overpower the overall tans and browns of the lions.

84 I think I'd read that the lions found around Tsavo in recent years are not only larger than lions elsewhere, but the males have shed the mane, so their variety of lion is not sexually dimorphic.

85 The .700 Nitro Express
If you are someone who looks at the .600 Nitro Express and wonders “why” then the .700 Nitro Express will likely produce an even bigger collection of question marks in your mind. The .700 Nitro Express was created by Jim Bell and William Feldstein in 1988. William Feldstein had originally wanted a Holland & Holland .600 Nitro Express double rifle but the story goes that Holland & Holland declined to build him one because they had agreed with a previous customer that his would be the last they would ever make.

87 One customer for a Holland & Holland .700 Nitro Express double rifle commissioned it with engraving by Phillippe Grifnée in an African Elephant theme. Between them, Holland & Holland and Phillippe Grifnée created a rifle that is the epitome of the rifle-maker’s art. The rifle tips the scales at 17 lbs. 13.7 oz., and will be capable of taming the recoil and keeping the rifle controllable for the second shot: but in addition to that Holland & Holland will have built the rifle so that the weight is concentrated between the hands in such a way that it does not feel as if it weighs almost 18 lbs.

116 The extinct cave lions (Panthera spelea) fascinate me. They too were larger than today's lions; it's been suggested that the Tsavo variant are descendants of that long-gone breed.

Years ago I used to tell Miss Linda that my big tabby Arizona had racial memories of cave lion days. She thought I was making "cave lions" up.

Wasn't there also an American lion variant, probably wiped out by the early Indians when they colonized the Americas? Larger than our mountain lions today, and maybe larger than African lions too.

145 Lions once roamed in Europe and Asia. According to the Greek myths, Heracles (Hercules) had to defeat the Nemean lion. (Once Aurora even offered a model assembly kit of the struggle between them.) And they were found in the Near East, i.e., Asia Minor and Persia, as well.

146 Anyone with an appreciation of animals in art should like this artist. His ability to capture the musculature and fur of the animals is astounding. The natural poses of the lions in this one is what makes it such an attractive painting. That level of detail for the animals also makes other paintings with people like the Daniel in the lions den and Saint George, and Requiescat so effective. Not as apparent in this painting but he excels in the use of light.

I'm sure modern art critics would despise Riviere's art. Too literal, to many religious themes, too sentimental. All good reasons to enjoy his work.

147 Modern-day North America and Mexico were home to the American cave lion. About 12,000 years ago, the species went extinct, about the same time the Eurasian cave lion did. The size of American cave lions was noteworthy; some estimations put their weight at up to 520 kilograms (1,153 pounds)! With that, it can be concluded that American cave lions are the largest lion species ever recorded.

Eventually, she put him out the back gate, but he leapt back over the fence, and nearly beat her into the house. 186 We had a cat out on our deck the other day. My wife went out chase him off, fearing that he was after the bunnies who live under the deck. He instantly came up and rubbed against her leg and charmed her. So she sat down in one of the chairs with the cat (his tag said his name was "Oliver") in her lap, and petted him. Eventually, she put him out the back gate, but he leapt back over the fence, and nearly beat her into the house. He then sat there right by the back sliding glass door, looking into the living room, expecting that we would let him come in. Persistent little bugger. It finally got too hot for him and he left.

Shit, just have 'em hit a bucket of balls. Mr. Trump wisely pointed out, "he can't even hit a ball 50 yards". Perfect cognitive test in the sense of being healthy enough to walk 9 holes. Or even spot 'em a cart.

Said no one ever.

My 17 yo son watched teh debate and said,

"Biden looked old. He really looked like the job of being President finally caused him the rapid aging that we saw with Barack. We liked him in 2020 because he had old guy "I don't give a fuck, I am going to speak the truth energy" [I'd call that Dark Brandon energy] At the debate he looked old, he seemed confused. People my age aren't going to want to vote for either of these old dudes."

If young people stay home, vote third party, etc., Biden will struggle in swing states. TFG's goal is for young people to stay home and not vote. Because the racist young ones will.

Of course President Biden would look confused. He was invited to a debate and he walked into a Trump rally. I’d look fucking confused too.

All that backs today's decision is the majority's belief that Chevron was wrong--that it gave agencies too much power and courts not enough. But shifting views about the worth of regulatory actors and their work do not justify overhauling a cornerstone of administrative law. In that sense, too, today's majority has lost sight of its proper role."

Jack - I think this is a great Court victory. And it is a great step forward. Coupled with the SEC case from earlier this week, the Court has made great strides against the admin state. But Roberts is also leaving himself a lot of wiggle room to declare some admin rules perfectly fine. This could also be overturned. I'll celebrate the win, but more decisive action is needed. I like the commenter who compared it to DDay - maybe somewhat apt. This week has given us a beachhead. Someone needs to gain significant ground by shrinking or eliminating the agencies.

Posted by: SH (no more socks) at June 28, 2024 10:39 AM (sX1BW)

445 Kagan characterizes this decision, along with yesterday's ruling in SEC v. Jarkesy, as "yet another example of the Court's resolve to roll back agency authority, despite congressional direction to the contrary."

--------

Yes. Congress has been ceding legislative power to the executive for decades. That's not a good or a constitutional thing.

The courts should have stopped it decades ago.

Her argument amounts to: "We've been doing it for so long, we need to keep doing it that way because we've been doing it for so long." Well, she'll apply that to executive power but not the rights of the people to determine what marriage is at the local level.

Yes -- 20th century morality plays for a 20th century audience, with a strong dollop of imagination and humor, plus scientific details for plausibility (something most other TV SF of the time didn't bother with).

It was also on a much bigger scale. Even the Forbidden Planet movie ship was not as big as the Enterprise, and no TV show before 1966 had given us such a universe, with what amounted to a battleship or heavy cruiser traveling routinely in space. Usually TV "spaceships" had been rocket-powered and only big enough for a few crewmen. Even the Robinsons' Jupiter II was more like an overgrown RV than like a capital ship.

A tremendous act of creation.

Star Trek is every bit the space fantasy that Star Wars is. Star Wars (1977-2012) demanded little from me; Star Trek demanded a LOT, especially lots of homework. Hence Star Wars it was for me.

478 Yes -- 20th century morality plays for a 20th century audience, with a strong dollop of imagination and humor, plus scientific details for plausibility (something most other TV SF of the time didn't bother with).

The days of an agency accusing you and then finding you guilty of a made up infraction are over. Not saying it is going to go away today but this ruling will eventually put a stop to it.

I am "on the spectrum".

Recently I found myself getting into Space:1999 for one simple reason: the switch came on. When I saw it on AFN in Germany when I was nine I thought the Eagles were cool but the show was simply bizarre. Now that I am 29, I Get It, and it all makes sense to me now that I am older.

If I'm the dems, I rest easy knowing I control the actual levers of power. Let Biden embarrass himself.

First, make it clear to Merchan that Trump is not to be jailed and made into a more powerful martyr.

Instead, focus on subverting Trump's next four years. Then claim he's a failure. Tarnish his successor with that same brush.

The memory of Biden will be long gone. Newsome will still be a youngish politician in four years.

Democrats started the modern era of torpedoing presidential nominations. I think with Nixon putting for Haynesworth or some northeastern feller. Prior to that they were pretty much voted in.

You got one group of people who want to minimally engage in politics. Or at least engage in them to the point expected of us by the Founders. BUT as they have things like bills, responsibilities, families, and perhaps even businesses to run, they by and large have little time to attend school board meetings and such things.

The other group? That's ALL they live for. No families, no businesses, maybe they work at Starbucks or someplace like that...the ONLY thing they have time for is politics and activism.
