THE MORNING RANT: What Does It Portend when Neither the Government Nor Corporations Are Providing Reliable Economic Reporting?
It is now accepted (and expected) that the economic and financial data being reported by both the federal government and by corporations is massaged into providing reports that are often misleading, and frequently dishonest. Analysts must decipher and recalculate the official reports to try to get a better handle on the unpolished facts. Aside from making it difficult to accurately gauge economic activity, this broadly tolerated dishonesty also reflects on the ethical rot that has taken over our institutions. I am not warning of economic doom. However, I am very concerned that with the government providing falsified economic data, and with corporations becoming aggressive about manipulating financial reporting, we no longer have an accurate picture of economic activity or business health. The fact that those publishing these financial reports feel the need to massage the data is alarming all by itself, and the enthusiasm in financial circles to embrace what are clearly dishonest reports is a form of willful blindness. I have written repeatedly about how the government’s economic reports are fraudulent. The Bureau of Labor Statistics habitually publishes favorable numbers regarding jobs and unemployment, then quietly does negative revisions after the initial euphoric headlines. Likewise, the BLS’ official inflation figures are laughably understated. Just this past week, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported some great economic news, “U.S. adds a much-better-than-expected 272,000 jobs in May”. But this was despite the unemployment rate increasing to 4%. Meanwhile, the BLS also reported that the labor participation rate has decreased. Excuse me, but my brain is struggling to reconcile an increase in the number of jobs, concurrent with a decrease in the number of Americans working, while at the same time the unemployment rate increases.
The increase came even though the labor force participation rate decreased to 62.5%, down 0.2 percentage point. The survey of households used to compute the unemployment rate showed that the level of people who reported holding jobs fell by 408,000.Either there is some fraudulent reporting by the BLS that will be “adjusted” in the future, or jobs are being lost at a much faster rate than new jobs are being created. Meanwhile, corporations are starting to abandon the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”
which investors and lenders have always relied on for accurate presentation of companies’ financial performance. To show better-than-actual financial results, companies are aggressively using “adjusted earnings,” which add back actual expenses that were incurred, thus pumping up the results in their earnings reports. The excuse for doing this is that these are one-time, non-recurring expenses.
“S&P 500 Companies Boost Profit by Stripping More Items From Earnings” [Bloomberg – 5/22/2024]
An analysis of earnings reports was done by a data firm named Calcbench, which randomly chose 260 companies from the S&P 500. It found that these companies added back a combined $182 billion of expenses in 2023 in reporting their “adjusted earnings.” This resulted in the reported “adjusted earnings” being a whopping 29% higher than their actual GAAP net income.
US regulators in recent years have become increasingly concerned with companies’ usage of non-GAAP measures, with the Securities and Exchange Commission sending letters to various businesses asking about the rationale for stripping out certain expenses.The rationale is that corporations sometimes incur extraordinary expenses that do not recur every year, therefore they should be added back to net income for reporting purposes, since those expenses don’t reflect normal operations. The trouble with this reasoning is that while a specific expense may be non-recurring, it can be expected that there will be numerous different non-recurring expenses that will occur regularly, all of which consume cash, and all of which will reduce the true GAAP bottom line. Think of your own household and the various non-recurring expenses that periodically happen, even though they are not part of your regular monthly household operating budget, e.g. the new tires, the broken window, the A/C compressor, etc. None of these is likely to happen in any given year, but you are not able to “adjust” your checkbook upward when these household expenses do happen.
Among the examples identified by Calcbench were Walgreens adjusting its earnings upward by $7.5 billion for legal and regulatory expenditures, and 3M adjusting its earnings upwards by $11.6 billion for litigation expenses.
Walgreens pointed to its most recent quarterly filing, in which it stated that in 2023, the company “recorded charges related to the opioid litigation settlement frameworks and certain other legal matters.” 3M, meanwhile, said it does not consider the litigation charge to be a normal operating expense related to its ongoing operations, revenue generating activities, business strategy, industry and regulatory environment.There are many of us for whom GAAP accounting has been the foundation for how we monitor corporate performance. This intentional distortion of corporate earnings and cash flow is making reporting that was once accepted without question into something that is unreliably opaque.
Most, or 86% of examined companies, adjusted income upwards in 2023, meaning non-GAAP income was higher than GAAP income, whereas 14% adjusted it down.The accounting chicanery of Enron was supposed to be a cautionary tale, not a role model. Intentionally distorted economic and financial reporting - whether it comes from government or corporations - is a red flag about our economy. It’s also an indictment of those holding positions of power and responsibility that they now see financial reporting as a way to conceal information rather than for conveying it accurately.

They report in GAAP. They have to. The GAAP figures are always there, and they are reported tot he SEC. Where the non-GAAP figures show up is in the press releases, headlines, etc.
The attitude is, "GAAP is X, but we don't think that's reflective of reality because of factors Y and Z, so we think the non-GAAP calculation of X+N is a better reflection of business health. Also, we're going to use the non-GAAP figures to determine our dividend this quarter."

Trump spoke nonstop for 90 minutes in Las Vegas yesterday, standing up for AN HOUR AND A HALF in 100 degree temperature!
I'm his age, & I couldn't do that if my life depended on it.
It never gets mentioned, but his physical stamina is remarkable for a 77-year-old-- and he's is at least 15 pounds overweight, too. Imagine what he could do if he got his weight down.

I hate that acronym.
"EBITDA" is awkward to pronounce.
"EBTIDA" is equivalent, and very easy to pronounce.
I learned it as "EBTIDA," but that is not the normal order or way to spell it. Unfortunate. "EBTIDA" rolls off the tongue, whereas "EBITDA" makes you swallow your tongue trying to say it.

Im of the view that most companies should not be publicly traded.
My own company fudges their labor expenses by hiring contractors instead of more FTEs because contractors are not reported under the base expenses for earnings, making it look like theyre keeping their labor costs low
Meanwhile we have a glut of contractors with no insurance or PTO but work hard while the full time staff that have both jerk off all day

I replaced my roof last year. That was a pretty massive expense that doesn't represent my normal functioning budget.
I'm unlikely to have another expense like that for probably a decade. (And very much not likely to be the roof.)
However, next year I'm going to have to repair our fence. I likely won't have to do that for another decade.
BUT I'll have another upkeep expense very much like that one the following year. And then another expense of the same like the next year.
I think the issue isn't that these companies are excluding the very large, very sporadic expenses, (since 86% are doing this), but are excluding sporadic expenses that are unlikey to be repeated but will have similar costs repeated in some other form annually.

Yup. That's a serious problem, which is one of the reasons this "Non-GAAP" stuff often doesn't pan out.
Staggering numbers of businesses are in the equivalent of "living paycheck-to-paycheck" and those things really *do* count in terms of overall business health the moment interest rates go up.
In a declining rate environment, you can be "profitable" while making literally nothing, just by turning the bond crank again. If rates go up, though, you're finished.

Specifically, I think they changed how they count unemployed. Where it used to be something like, "not employed,still looking" it's now something like "unemployed, still looking, but less than 6 months."
Meaning, anyone who would have been counted under the old definitions, will drop off after 6 months.
That's how the unemployment rate keeps going down while the participation rate goes up-- they are moving active job seekers into "dropped out of the labor force" to lower unemployment.
I'll also bet they are counting under 35 hours as full-time now. I'll bet it's down to 30.5 hours as "full time."

I knew a family many years ago where after like 15 years and 4 kids, the husband decided he was gay and walked out. I can't imagine a sexual urge, hetero- or homo-, that would rationalize that.

Divorce is unlikely to be an immediate loser for women. It's like playing a lotto with stacked odds. The disincentives have piled up hugely at the same time that the number of marriage-quality women has been dropping and increasing numbers of men have no access at all and lots more just check out. I was Administration Manager on one of the international pipeline construction jobs. My biggest financial headache, including the headaches of dealing with the local business' chicanery, was that our Accounting Department got into the habit of coding expenses to "Administration - Other" whenever they got tired of thinking. Mostly they were small expenses, but those numbers all add up and always in the same direction. They could be considerable by the end of the month.
More aggravating was that miscellaneous credits never showed up in that column. Those credits always managed to find a home in some other department somewhere. I had some very nasty fights with the Accounting Manager over this, especially since I was not allowed to budget for non-specific "other" charges.

Sounds like a mid-life crisis where he wanted to abandon all of his responsibilities and live the life of a child again - pleasure all he wants, no one actually depending on him.
I actually knew someone who did that same thing...and yes, he enjoyed lifting the burden of all his responsibilities the most. It must be said he was "no longer a looker" and neither was the gentleman he ended up with...

OT The neighbor just stopped by. His Dad, age 81, is in the hospital, and neighbor said he's going to spend a night or two with Mom so keep an eye on things. Dad had a dose of pneumonia but got to the hospital on time. Things were going well until he said screw this place, I'm outta here. Tripped over some wires and now has a concussion and pneumonia.

Barilla goes from undercooked to overcooked in about five seconds. You need a pasta with a good range - DeCecco has a good two minutes. Also dry pasta is absolutely fine.

I just don't answer government surveys anymore. I've received them regarding agriculture and small businesses I own. The government calls them part of a census.
The surveys take a lot of time to fill out, and really it isn't any of the government's business. As a non protected white male, any information I give the government will likely be used against me.
They send threatening letters for a year or so, then I never hear from them again. Apparently, the government can fine me for this...500 dollars or something...which would be less than the cost of having my accountant fill out the survey forms.

My sister lived with such an a$$hole. He could've been reasonable, but burned the entire value of their house on fighting in out in court using the sleaziest of lawyers. Guess what? The court was not amused. He even held off on child support payments which caused his paychecks to be docked. In the end his kids wanted nothing to do with him.

Walmart Great Value fiber enriched past is pretty good. Doesn't turn into mush if you just cook it firmer than al dente and use it in a crock pot recipe. If you are on a Metamucil regimen, you may skip it. Pro tip.

No doubt he's going to want to bitch at me for an hour about not affording a house on a single income, as this is his favorite thing to do now that he's in too poor health to make physical threats anymore.

254 Cleaning up after cooking. I worked with a guy that was cook on a USN diesel submarine. I went on a tour of one of those boats, and the galley is tiny. He said besides serving up food to the crew in rotation, there was constant cleaning of scullery and serving items. That would be one of the unsung jobs in the Navy.

Don’t come at me, but Bonza Chickpea pasta is pretty good. J has a meltdown every time I eat it and refuses. He orders pasta from Italy and that is what he makes for everyone but me. He is bougie.

257 246 My sister lived with such an a$$hole. He could've been reasonable, but burned the entire value of their house on fighting in out in court using the sleaziest of lawyers. Guess what? The court was not amused. He even held off on child support payments which caused his paychecks to be docked. In the end his kids wanted nothing to do with him.

For Giefman Beslan was her Gaza and I think she just didn't have the distance required to make assessments, and got irate when I suggested a link between her studies, not necessarily causal, that might be useful in prediction.
