The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"We absolutely want to preserve that unique social character, but at the same time we need to be responsible in how we're managing the beach," Paul Brar, a division manager with Metro Vancouver.<

Quote II

“Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, one by one.” Charles Mackay

The Canadian Cancer Society literally groveled before the transgender community claiming they use the term “cervix” as opposed to “front hole” for simplicity’s sake, because evidently men can have one too.

Philanthropist Andrea Seale, who runs the cancer organization, gave the uber-woke nod to the LGBTQ+ community on a page that is dedicated to cervical cancer, something a transgender cannot possibly get. She genuflected under the “Words matter” section, according to the Daily Mail.

“The non-profit said that ‘many’ non-binary people and transgender men have ‘mixed feelings’ or ‘feel distanced’ from the term cervix,” the media outlet reported.

TOPSHAM, Maine (AP) — A police investigator concluded no criminal charges were warranted after a lobster-themed monster truck clipped a power line, causing some scary moments with live wires falling to the ground. Two people were taken to hospitals.

Several people were injured Saturday when utility poles snapped and a transformer tumbled to the ground at the Topsham Fairgrounds. Witnesses said some people were trapped in portable toilets, which had wires on them.

Topsham Police Sgt. Mark Gilliam wrote in a report released Thursday that the driver was trapped in the cockpit because of a live power line and another wire was draped over an injured man on the ground. The injured spectator, who suffered a fractured vertebra, was taken to a hospital along with a woman experiencing back pain, he wrote. Others sought treatment on their own.

32 The European parliament elections should have surprised no one this has been building for quite some time and everyone knew this was going to happen. No one was actually surprised.

I normally like Dan Bongino, but he embarrassed himself today when at the end of his show, he said the only reason he didn’t discuss the conservative/populist/right wing landslide across Europe was that the Tory’s in the UK are forecasted to lose in the future.

Look, I realize he has to do several hours of a show every day, but he did this at the end of the show and someone should’ve just tackled him. The Tories are far left of the weakest George Bush senior ever had, They are like Michael Bloomberg, but who is left. The populist right in the UK is surging like crazy, Dan Bongino got all of this wrong every single bit about it, His biggest mistake was even commenting on it.

105 84 , I’m not trying to be argumentative with you but trust me it is more power than you think. The mainstream status left has been obsessed with these elections for months. Try checking out a left of center euro news channel such as Euronews, It is all they talk about now they don’t know what to say.

I hear what you’re saying European Parliament is not the same as taking over a nations Parliament. But the Euro Parliament sins laws that constrain the entire region it actually is a big deal. But I do understand your point in the sense that they allow the right to start off and win in that body yet somehow the left tends to find a way to win with their national governments, We will see.

But I say rejoice because this doesn’t happen in a vacuum these guys never got Rush Limbaugh, and the huge percentage of the European voters are voting for rush would vote for, What else can be said?

There’s a well quoted line from Parks and Recreation when someone from Home Depot goes up to Ron Swanson, and Ron simply says, “I know more than you”. Look it is a fine line if you go onto somebody’s store and try to act like you’re the be all and you know everything you’re gonna come off as a douche. But I have seen people in wine stores that literally wouldn’t know a Cabernet from a Cabaret and they won’t leave you alone just to decide which one you wanna pick. Is this only happened a couple times I wouldn’t even mention it because I am very much not a first world problems, guy, but it is kind of a funny thing. At least realize you need to stop bothering someone when you literally have nothing to offer them.

I went to a gaming convention in Dallas/Fort Worth this weekend at the DFW Westin. Looking over the emailed “folio” today and there’s a charge for the hotel’s restaurant/bar—I never ate there. It’s currently after normal business hours but I figured I’d call them anyway.

The person answering the phone said, I’ll have to send that to accounting, they’ll look into it and should call you back, and I’m thinking, okay, no problem, I’ll have to give them a call on Wednesday when they don’t call back Tuesday.

Less than an hour later I get a call from the hotel, same person, she says “I looked into it and it was a different guest who mixed up their room number. I’ve refunded the amount.”

Promise low and deliver high. Almost wanted to say, just refund it to yourself for being so competent.

Right so I'll tell a story I've never told here because I don't like to talk about my actual self. So my family from my grandmother down to me has, well, let's call it "something". On the night my wife's father passed in 2005, it was eerie and we were just sitting in silence. He was across an ocean at the time unfortunately.

After maybe an hour or so who knows, I told her that I know this is weird but I feel like he's "over there" in our dining room. I just told her I felt something.

Even more bizarre I told her I had a message for her and it made no sense to me and I felt stupid even saying it but I was going to say it anyway. And the message was literally "something something it were blue".

Now you have to remember the Brits have this weird fucking way of speaking and actually "it were blue" could be a normal sentence from them (meaning "it is blue") even though it sounded stupid to me. All I could think of was the sky. Anyway, my wife immediately informed me of something I had, hand to God, absolutely never heard - Blue was her dad's dog. Blue had turned on him. And he had had to put Blue down.

270 I loved Ray Charles' music well before I ever saw him, which I did sometime around '57-'58. His band was great, he was terrific, and the Raylettes... Wooo- hooo!
Of course, that's the memories of someone who was a hormone-ridden teenager :-)
Here's a unique take on _You Are My Sunshine_. Pay attention to the band break. He could select some great musicians.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ouip-F9oL-c
And this one of _I Can't Stop Loving You_. Despite the typical 50's overproduction of a full string orchestra and chorus, he manages to express the emotion of the song.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YDqwmaI_IdU
He was quite aware of how over the top it is, his comment, "Sing the song, children", sotto voce, makes that clear.

There's no way Joey Bidet makes it to the election as the Dem nominee. They're already greasing the skids with the earliest ever 'presidential debate', before even a nomination. Once it becomes all too apparent Dementia Joe has lost the few marbles he ever had, the Dems'll swap him out. Who is the big question? Kamalalaladingdong? They'll buy her off with something juicy to get out of the way as they know she has no shot. Gruesome Newsom? Why not? A pretty face sells and his face is plastered; takes after his aunt on that score. Big Mike? I don't think even a black Democrat would save them at this point. Too many blacks talking about how bad the Dems are in general, not just how shitty Biden is. And there's not a lot of love for Barry, either. Barry's one of THEM now while Trump's one of US. Funny weird how that worked out. The Mug Shot (Trademark). That was a big self-inflicted, chest-sucking wound by the Dems.

Runs on my dad's side. We call it second sight. But my mom gets flashes of it, too, although she doesn't believe in it.

Case in point, when I was still a teenager, a friend's father was going in for surgery, fairly routine. My friend and her mom wanted me to stay with them at the hospital and then spend the night, as they were always kind of skittish when the dad/husband wasn't home. Well, he made it through the surgery just fine, we went home, but in the middle of the night we got the call that he had taken a turn and we needed to get back to the hospital. So we rushed back, and about 10 minutes after we got there, he died, then about 10 minutes after that, we're all sitting there in shock and my mom walks in, saying she was so sorry to hear he had died, etc, but the thing is, no one had told her. She swore that I had called her, woke her up out of a sound sleep, crying and she couldn't make out what I was saying , but knew what must have happened, so she came right over to the hospital.
But I didn't call her. No one called her, no one had called anyone, we hadn't even called the other siblings yet.

Statist/Socialists hate a society like ours which is dynamic and makes class distinctions meaningless (you can start out poor and be middle class in no time if you want, for example; it's in a constant state of flux). They's rather there be two classes: rulers and everyone else. Their constant aching for a "classless society" notwithstanding. For let's face it, even in so called classless Communist countries, there are the elite and everyone else. In the GDR either you lived at Wandlitz or you were toe jam.

354 In re women not finding Kevin Costner attractive, I obviously can't speak authoritatively on the subject, but I can offer one bit of anecdotal evidence to the contrary.

A friend at work told me about a charity event she and her mother attended somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. Kevin Costner had just wrapped shooting on a film there, and he was the draw for the event, which was mostly a gathering of folks with XX chromosomes. The highlight of the evening was auctioning off a toilet seat from Costner's hotel room which he had personally autographed. Bidding was frenzied, and my friend's mom won by a bid somewhere in the 7000 dollar range.

I could be wrong, but women paying several grand to acquire a seat graced by Costner's rear end could constitute proof that women found him extremely attractive.

361 Not sure why so many Americans on the right are playing down the Europe parliament wins. No one is saying those victories mean Trump will win, though I believe he will win and he will win. One thing is about forecasting, and the other is about telling the news of the day. The European see it as a seismic shift and the left there has major levels of panties in a wad. I’m not sure why some Americans who barely knew there was a European Parliament a week ago or playing it down so much. I’m not talking about anyone here by the way I want to be clear about that but I do think some of the people that we listen to are giving us false information. When is a win, It is not a loss.

363 I am no expert on the French legal system by any means in fact, I’m not even a really well skilled amateur. But looking at it as an American to me, it is more important that the European parliament moves right then the French parliament on its own.

Two things I do know about French politics is for the last 40 years. They have based their system on the idea that the French should be in control of Europe as a whole. To them, it is about controlling Europe as a counterweight to the US so the European parliament and the rules they can place on all of Europe, a heck of a lot.

The second thing I know the president is more powerful than the American presidency. It is more similar to the head of Russia. In many European governments, the parliament is everything in the president is nothing not so in France. So the French Parliament, of course, would be great for conservatives to win at least the right kind of conservatives, But if you look at it from a French perspective, the European Parliament is probably bigger and even in a month they won’t be voting on the French presidency.

364 The mention of second sight upthread reminds me of a somewhat unique folk belief still held by many in Appalachia, including the range's foothill region in NE Mississippi - the blood-stopper.

(I should also mention that the belief is also found in the Ozarks, parts of Canada, and the Northwoods region of the US) The blood-stopper was an individual who supposedly had the ability to cause uncontrolled bleeding in a human or an animal to cease.

The whole thing worked by reciting Ezekiel 16:6:

And when I passed by thee, and saw thee polluted in thine own blood, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live; yea, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live.

The blood-stopper would sometimes walk eastwards while reciting the verse, and didn't necessarily have to be near the ailing animal or person. The ability was supposedly passed down through the family bloodline, with the new blood-stopper being a different gender than the previous. Insofar as I can tell, the belief originated from traditions brought over by German immigrants, who also heavily influenced a lot of other Appalachian folk beliefs in regard to the supernatural.

Thanks!

This intense obsession these people have with sex is unreal and sickening. Kids will hit upon it in their own good time, and they just cannot tolerate this.

When I began crushing (ages before the concept was known to me) I certainly did but did not understand the reason. And that was OK. That is called maturation. Growing up. Children will figure this out on their very own, without help. Honestly, I'd be good if sex ed was not done AT ALL in schools and was left to where it should be left to: families. (How humanity survived without it for millenia must be a mystery to some.)

One more thing: I'd be willing to bet that those same hand wringing people would be shrieking with horror if I, say, brought in a Thomas Sowell collection to an economics class, if I ever teach one. Or had them read Adam Smith, Frederic Bastiat or Hayek. "That can't be allowed because, um, er, ah, those concepts are too advanced for HS seniors" or some such bullshit will be said...

381 While I'm thinking about it, a good tip for those wandering the lonely wastes of Central Asia, tell anyone who seems to be operating in an official capacity that you're Circassian, and immediately launch into a spiel about your Khabzeism faith. By the time you're just warming up describing Theshkhue's many attributes and the minor deities he supervises, their eyes will glaze over and they'll just motion you to keep moving. They'll let Circassians get away with anything.

If that doesn't work, tell them you're Canadian and wax enthusiastic about Curling. Same effect, pretty much.

388 382, move to eastern North Carolina and I promise you you will never have to spell it out. You will only get sweet..

The only places in the South I know of where unsweet tea is common though still the minority is parts of Virginia and parts of Texas. I’m sure there are others and if anyone’s up this late, they’ll tell me, but in my years, those are places were people legit from those areas actually choose unsweet but again they are still a minority.

Of Course people from every state have unsweet drinkers that’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying something that is normal in a Southern state. I’ve seen it in parts of Texas and parts of Virginia.

389 Didn't work for Lawrence.
Posted by: Way, Way Downriver

Yeah, that didn't turn out well for him. Although after the publication of Seven Pillars of Wisdom and the David Lean movie, the press were able to locate the now far advanced in age Turkish officer who Lawrence claimed to be his abuser.

It was reported that he laughed at the accusation and said the whole incident was fabricated. That doesn't mean he was innocent, I know, but T.E. Lawrence wasn't always completely frank and honest about his experiences in WWI, and the man definitely had a few kinks - in particular, he often paid a few of his military friends to flog him in the fashion he alleged the Turks had done.

391 387, so I was going through basic training when Full Metal Jacket came out. My drill sergeants told us that platoon was “a pussy movie”, which it was, and FMJ was the best. And this was coming from Army drill sergeants. Looking back, you probably don’t want drill sergeants hyped up on Full Metal Jacket, but that is the way it was.

393 In AIT we had a guy named Pyle and he really got abused. He legit should not have been there. He was some jag guy who thought it would be cool or the right thing to go through basic training and AIT. He was way too old and they really treated him like crap. Legit his last name was Pyle, Wrong time for sure but they didn’t treat that guy right for a guy who never should’ve been there in the first place,

395 391: in the Military Crimes papers, controlled by Gannett (which makes them Statist government mouthpieces), they occasionally do readers polls on the 100 best war movies. Saving Private Ryan is always #1, FMJ #2. Every time I have seen them, anyway.

398 Virginia voted Ford in 1976. Some would say Virginia gets credit for not voting for that dummy. Carter, unlike every other southern state. And they do give them credit, but it does show where statism held sway, and I guess a lot of government workers supported Ford. Some might say that results shows that Virginia was less southern than the other states but either way they were right on that one.

They say Trump might win Virginia this time I don’t believe it. I know the vast majority of County will vote for Trump just like they did twice, but in my opinion, there’s no way the deep state is going to lose in the deep state. I hope I’m wrong. It would be fun.

During the period I lived in the UK, I occasionally partook of the Brit version of tea and enjoyed it, and Chinese restaurants often offer a well-prepared Green Tea which I like. Given the Slavic way of consuming tea, I wonder if the high number of immigrants from Eastern Europe who poured into Texas influenced how tea is consumed there - it's like how Shipley's, founded in Houston, offered and still offers Kolaches.

Yeah. I get the sense that VA outside NoVA is quite based. But NoVA has too many people and will pull VA into the void with it.

Why can’t those government types go to the MD SSR? It’s more their speed anyway.

409 A 1971 episode of Cannon on MeTV. Amazing how 95% of the cars (mostly Fords, as usual with Quinn Martin shows) are American, big ones like Galaxies and Cannon's own Lincoln coupe, with the occasional Mustang, or a Cadillac coupe in a parking lot.

We didn't start seeing Mercedes on American TV shows, with rare exceptions, until later in the '70s.

Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33

I hadn't realized that - googling around does indicate that a Kolache is more commonly a pastry, and that does make sense. I think the Shipley's version was adopted from the local Czech population, but the traditional Czech Kolache is more in line with a pastry dish.

You could make the argument that the Shipley's variant is a very American thing - traditional foods making their way into broader American culture and evolving and changing as they do so.

Posted by: John Drake Now Thinks It Might Be A Heat Mirage at June 11, 2024 04:02 AM (u/Zei)

411 Even compact cars in early '70s shows were American, like Ford Pintos. Of course in 1971 we hadn't had the first oil "crisis" and people had not started turning to Japanese makes yet. TV would reflect that by the late '70s and early '80s.

Yeah, me too - a Shipley's cherry-filled or chocolate-filled would really fit the bill. An éclair would also work.

Speaking of delicious pastries, a donut shop near my Mother-In-Law's home offers Bearclaws, which is awesome, but they make them to look like human hands. I mean almost literally, with a thumb, four fingers, and a palm. Has anyone else come across this, or is it just a local eccentricity that the donut shop so far doesn't feel the need to explain?
