Elon Musk Provided Internet to a Primitive Tribe In the Amazon.
Now They're Living the American Dream.

What's the worst that could happen?

A reclusive tribe in the Amazon finally got hooked up to the internet, thanks to Elon Musk -- only to be torn apart by social media and pornography addiction, elders complain.

We should definitely allow children to keep using the internet.

Brazil's 2,000-member Marubo tribe has been left bitterly divided by the arrival of the Tesla founder's Starlink service nine months ago, which connected the remote rainforest community along the Ituí River to the web for the first time.

"When it arrived, everyone was happy," Tsainama Marubo, 73, told The New York Times.

Yeah, I remember when we were all stoked about the internet, too.

Happier days.

"But now, things have gotten worse. Young people have gotten lazy because of the internet, they're learning the ways of the white people."

...

The Marubo are a chaste tribe, who even frown upon kissing in public -- but Alfredo Marubo (all Marubo use the same last name) said he is anxious that the arrival of the service, which delivers super-fast internet to far-flung corners of the planet and has been billed as a game-changer by Musk, could upend standards of decorum.

Alfredo said many young Marubo men have been sharing porn videos in group chats and he has already observed more "aggressive sexual behavior" in some of them.

It takes a very stable and grounded society to not dissolve morally when confronted with ten thousand videos of hot stepmoms in heat.

"We're worried young people are going to want to try it," he said of the kinky sex acts they've suddenly been exposed to on screen.

Yes, definitely, we should continue treating it as normal and acceptable for children to carry around the entire internet in their pocket.

"Everyone is so connected that sometimes they don't even talk to their own family."

...

Initially, the internet was heralded as a positive for the remote tribe who were able to quickly contact authorities for help with emergencies, including potentially deadly snake bites.

Internet Phase One: This is going to connect the world and allow our scientists to work together to cure diseases.

Internet Phase Two: People stop reading books to scan headlines. People hop on the internet to check a fact and then spend the next ten hours watching an Iceberg video about the history of Bane.

Internet Phase Three: People stop talking to friends and family because of politics and Busty Lesbian Internet Porn.

Internet Phase Four: Man can no longer maintain an erection unless they a Dom Stepmom is stepping on their hands in high heels. The species ends for lack of trying.

"In the village, if you don't hunt, fish and plant, you don't eat."

"Some young people maintain our traditions," TamaSay Marubo, 42, added.

"Others just want to spend the whole afternoon on their phones."

This all checks out.

Tribespeople became so addicted that Marubo leaders, fearing that history and culture -- which is passed down orally -- could be lost forever, they have now limited access to the internet for two hours each morning, five hours each evening, and all day Sunday.

But parents still worry the damage may already be done.

It is already done. People's brains and morality and natural animal drives have been -- what's the word the tech vampires prefer? -- "disrupted."

Below: The nitwit shitlib Jack Dorsey, formerly of Twitter, says that algorithms and AI are "reprogramming" us. I wouldn't care much for his babbling but Elon Musk says he's right.

2 Willowed: Yet the accepted age range goes 10 years younger than this. Someone who turned 20 in 2000 ain't in the same generation as someone who turned 10. The 20 year old grew up in a different world than the 10 year old.

Posted by: Elric Blade at June 07, 2024 12:42 PM (iFTx/)

I'd suggest it's even more narrow than this.

I was born in 1980, my sister in 1985. We may as well have grown up on different planets. Her entire age group is full of people who have spent the entirety of their lives expecting things to appear for them.

It's bonkers.

On the '20% have had a parent come to a job interview,' I concur. In my past life, I was hiring federal agents and associated administrative staff. On three separate occasions, an applicant brought a parent.

In a different case, an employee reached the time in grade to make GS-13 and asked for consideration. I responded with a list of duties I'd like to see her start picking up and courses I'd like her to attend and told her we'd revisit the issue in 8 months.

Her dad called me the next day and wanted to fight about it. She never did get that -13.

23 I have a slightly different take on this. This story about modern tech destroying a primitive tribe smacks of the type of snobbish paternalism that also laments how things like electricity and clean water spoil the spirit and culture of naked primitives living under crushing poverty.

These stories were popular a while back. It seemed obvious that spoiled Western snobs wanted primitives to stay primitive for their own amusement, like animals in a zoo.

Yes, modern tech brings demons. But what is the alternative? We should let the primitives rot in their own shit?

Very possibly. There is a distinction, however, that seems to get lost in the noise.

"The Internet" != "Social Media"

The internet does a lot of things. You check your bank account. You book airline tickets and make hotel reservations. You shop. You get directions. You collaborate with colleagues and peers on tasks. You make phone calls. The companies with which you do business use it for intra-company communications, to manage the supply chain, to maintain inventory, etc. Yes, you can even look up porno and radical literature. But that's the internet.

Social media is the all-consuming, attention-span-destroying, norm-shattering, radicalizing walled garden of psychogenic cancer. The internet has its pluses and minuses and can probably be managed. I am increasingly of the opinion that social media cannot be managed. It's simply destructive to the human condition, especially when addiction sets in when young.

Same effect as broken windows because people are monkey see monkey do. Essentially, for some people, just like alcohol, drugs, etc., they spiral downward creating their own mutually reinforcing community. That is why pedoism is metasizing in society; it is because the pedo is no longer lonely and isolated with their tendency but can find encouragement that others across the globe think as they do.

That is the dark side of libertarianism--a certain percentage of people use liberty to do bad things. The argument is that most people don't so it should not be legally banned. However, societies in the past basically pounded the shit outta deviants through social control and shaming rather than laws.

Not the same thing but in a similar vein - My division had production support responsibilities for over 500 storehouses and repair facilities for a monster electric utility. Of course, this meant 24 x 7 call outs if needed. We always were very diligent in pointing this out during the hiring process. We paid accordingly. One of our new hires, a guy with years of experience in similar type work, rises to the top of the duty board and gets called out in the middle of the night. He, with a bit of help, fixes the issue.

Partly, yes.

It also completely destroys expectations. Everything everyone sees - and produces - is curated. "His life is better than mine, because I see it on social media, and now I'm depressed and miserable because my life is awful. These guys never have constipation or water heater failures or a car repair they can't afford." Or the opposite condition of, "nobody ever has anything go right and everyone is miserable and everything is hopeless," depending on which form of delusion you end up accidentally cultivating. Corrosive regardless.

And then the reward system is bizarre, especially for women. "I get sooooo many likes and so many dudes 'sliding into my DMs'" and whatnot and now the self-perceived value is up in the stratosphere, which breeds misery in the real world where the inflation isn't there to anything like the same degree.

It's all insane, and drives lots of psychological problems.

Actually, what I notice is that people are programming themselves and social media is providing the reward/punishment.

Think I've been sounding that horn for most of a decade.

People are reprogramming themselves by the fact that the fastest, and sometimes the most extreme take for a side gets the applause.

Also funny helps. So you're training and optimizing that synapse pathway for quick, extreme, and derisive reactions.

Also, I've noticed that wokies and the like almost prefer to be seen as an abstraction of their ideology. They don't want any impure thoughts, so it's "Search me, O Twitter, and see if there is any offensive way in me".

So they want to have the parts that will earn them less applause programmed away.

This is *definitely* happening.

75 I'm pissed because I didn't see this argued.

An expired statute of limitations law means a putative defendant charged with the dead law gets to claim factual innocence because the presumption of innocence belongs to a defendant.

So Bragg's felonies cannot be used to convict Trump because they ALL rest on expired misdemeanors.

Why is torabora correct and million dollar lawyers are missing this fact.

The article also mentions advantages to the access. For instance, before Starlink they had to use radio messages to call for assistance (things like medical emergencies). And those messages would have to be relayed through a few other remote settlements before reaching their intended destination.

With Starlink, they can now contact the recipient directly. They've had some in incidents when they called for medical help, and got it much faster than they did in the past.

86 Retro to the last page. This Gen A-B-C work differentiation is the result of the Great Society and all the child and other labor laws the sprang from it.

Anecdotally, in the last century I ran labor.
Many of all races were lazy, they could afford it. The white boy would ask, when do I get off work, how many and how long are the breaks, how long is lunch? The black guy would ask, what you got for me? Neither would take the job.
The illegals would hover over my truck trying to open the locked doors saying, pick me, pick me.

I would argue that the internet is the restoration of the pre-Babel "unity".

We, humans who know better than God, think it will bring peace and progress (because we're such good people), but it will bring more strife (because we're not as good as we imagine).

The Bible says two things about human potential of note.

1. Together we can do "anything".

2. And in the end: if God had not intervened no flesh would be left alive. (Take note, Fauci and Gates)

So, when we're given back the power to do "anything", what we will end up doing is pretty much the extinction of life.

Shaming cultures can work without the need for a lot of laws but at the price of societal constipation. Islam.

Arguably, shaming people like posting bad checks or posting their pix for shoplifting is superior than engaging the legal system. If you want a libertarian society, then you have to have society control miscreants rather than government.

He's smart...but doesn't dedicate himself to understanding things if they aren't obvious from the getgo. He gets super frustrated in those instances.

But, his reading is improving. He finished Harry Potter 5 and chose to pick up Treasure Island next. He has to summarize what he's read to us after the end of every chapter, and he's been getting better and better at it. I'm kind of surprised at how complete his summaries of Treasure Island are getting, especially considering the higher language level.

158 I used to study culture clash types of events. My favorite study was that of Capt. Cook's first visit to what is now called Hawaii. The natives couldn't believe their eyes, they thought Cook, his ships, his crew were advanced technological beings, even gods. It went poorly following that.

Arguably, shaming people like posting bad checks or posting their pix for shoplifting is superior than engaging the legal system. If you want a libertarian society, then you have to have society control miscreants rather than government.

It's *what* your culture deems as honorable or shameful that makes the culture decent or crappy.

Honor and Shame are not these plantonically ideal intransitive things that exist on their own. What is it that is shameful? Being a useless layabout? Sure. Using words that start with the same letter as your mother-in-law's name? Uhhhh... OK I guess, have fun with that. Helping an Untouchable when they're in peril? Yeah, no, fuck you, your culture sucks.

However, Anthropologists used to acknowledge the "guilt" culture. And when they recognized such a thing, they would point out that in a Shame culture, you are wrong because you are undergoing shame.

So, shame can often be an expression of social dominance rather that a real principle you've actually deserve shame for violating.

When I saw that the Shame/Guilt culture distinction had vanished, I read around and asked around, and found, largely from talking to a more conservative degreed Anthropologist, that actually remembers that distinction in the field, that the reason they got rid of that distinction was that "guilt" culture mainly referred to the Judeo-Christian tradition, and all the analysis that favored the maturity of the Guilt Culture seemed to favor the Western tradition.

Anyway, Dolley and I got into a small argument the other day when I said it was the longest of the 7. She's the Potterhead between us, so her knowledge must be right. I was right.

Also, she had to think about it if the final book was one or two because of the movies.

Book 7 could have used a big of editing when they were wandering around the forest for FOREVER. Instead of the radio as the device to know what’s going on in the outside, she should have just followed around some of the other characters.

218 When I saw that the Shame/Guilt culture distinction had vanished, I read around and asked around, and found, largely from talking to a more conservative degreed Anthropologist, that actually remembers that distinction in the field, that the reason they got rid of that distinction was that "guilt" culture mainly referred to the Judeo-Christian tradition, and all the analysis that favored the maturity of the Guilt Culture seemed to favor the Western tradition.
------------
Zoroastrianism was the first guilt culture. I am of the POV that Christ was brought Zoroastrianism to the west. Romans were hero worshippers. Winning was all that mattered - mercy was seen as weakness.

See, they can just come right out and say it, and I agree with them. Their ways are not our ways. All people are not the same, despite a century of gaslighting targeted to exploit our empathy and convince so many deluded White people to ignore this plain and obvious truth. Our ancestors made our society for us---in their own words, for themselves and their posterity--not for foreign tribes. These people are not suited to live in it or to use its inventions. That's why we used to have nations--actual nations.

That is the dark side of libertarianism--a certain percentage of people use liberty to do bad things. The argument is that most people don't so it should not be legally banned.
