I barely even want to cover this. Star Wars is dead and it's not coming back, and this is just more gay/feminist propaganda from Kaffeine Kennedy.

But I guess I have to at least mention this.

The hero of The Acolyte -- the Sith killer, I mean -- has two "moms." Two lesbian moms. And the show claims that one "created" her, while the other mom "carried" her.

This is a science fantasy show.

The "star" of the show then chimes in that this should appeal to "nerds" because, quote, "nerds are gay."

If you think the science is bad on having two moms who "created" a daughter, wait till you see the scene where the hero has to put out a fire on the exterior of a spaceship -- a fire that burns in the oxygen-free void of space.

The show informs us that Homophobia Is a Problem even in the far future of Star Wars -- yes, I know it's set in the distant past, Gay Nerds -- when one of the Sith hero's gay moms tells her that the galaxy oppresses people like us.

Reviews say that the ditzy star can't act.

So why was she chosen?

Well, previously she had appeared in a race-baiting, white-denigrating film called The Hate You Give, and said the point of that movie was "to make white people cry."

Amandla Stenberg, actress in the new Star Wars series, The Acolyte, says "White people crying was the goal"

My sacred duty as a journalist requires me to note that at the London premiere, she did offer fans of Star Wars a living tribute to the twin suns of Tattooine, and I approve of that.

Episodes 1 and 2 were released. The word is that they are slow, boring, poorly written, and badly acted. Former Harvey Weinstein assistant and showrunner Leslye Headland -- there are some conspiracy theorists who think her history with Harvey Weinstein and her sudden rise as a showrunner may be related, somehow! -- cast her Nepot lesbian wife in not one but two roles, and reviewers say you can feel the force of nepotism in her terrible performance.

But the real problems come in episode three, which Allen Ng of Film Threat say destroys Star Wars forever. (Critics received screener copies of the first four episodes.)

Ng hasn't said exactly what causes the breaking, but there are rumors the show actually establishes that the Force is Female.

Gary from Nerdrotic says the show doesn't actually say "The Force is Female," but implies that the Force was created by the union of two lesbian women.

That Park Place:

This rumor comes from scooper WDW Pro, who detailed in a recent video upload, "According to a source that I have, Lorn, Kathleen Kennedy and Leslye Headland are going to do something in The Acolyte that is going to essentially end what remaining fans they have. And that is they are literally going to change the Force, the Force itself, into being literally female, gender female Force."
Later in the video, Pro detailed, "The source who has relayed to me some stuff, they believe this will be so bad that there's nothing left to do except reboot Star Wars. They think Kathleen Kennedy cannot continue or Star Wars cannot."
Film Threat writer Alan Ng has made similar comments. He posted on X, "The third episode of The Acolyte will finally kill Star Wars for the vast majority of Pre-Disney Star Wars Fans. Based on LucasFilm comments of late, they are OK with that."

They said the thing! They said the thing!

This changes the lore of Star Wars completely, of course. Never has it ever been suggested that the Force was "created" by anyone, much less two women bumping clams.

Gary from Nerdrotic points out that this is a major retcon that changes the Star Wars mythology as much as the "Timeless Children" episode of Doctor Who did. In that episode, woke showrunner Chris Chibnall told Doctor Who fans that the Timelords were born from a young black girl, and that young black girl was the Doctor's original and true form.

Apparently episode 3 also Makes Herstory by introducing trans pronouns, too.

The show also introduces the first live-action Wookiee Jedia, and shows why George Lucas had always resisted doing this: Because it's silly and looks stupid.

Why is the Wookiee wearing clothes? Chewbacca didn't, nor did any other Wookiee we saw.

But you wouldn't know he's a Jedi unless he was wearing Jedi Cosplay, so they put him in dumb pseudo-robes.

Oh, I thought maybe the wookiee is also a female, but no, this is one of the few male characters on the show.

There are no white men (spit) on the show, of course.

Oh, and speaking of Doctor Who: The ratings continue to fall. A single episode bucked the trend of ratings going down and down, and that episode had very little of the gay black "Doctor" played by gay black racist Ncuti Gatwa. Only a touch over two million people watched the last episode when it debuted.

In more Disney news: They shut down one of their most famous and most loved attractions, Splash Mountain, because apparently it was themed with characters from Song of the South, like Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox.

Therefore, the ride did a racism.

They revamped it by turning it into "Tiana's Bayou Adventure." Tiana is the black princess from The Princess and the Frog. So they wanted to get rid of Muh Racism, but once something is DEI, it must be DEI forever, so of course it had to be based on a movie featuring a black princess.

The ride is getting terrible reviews. It's had a problematic roll-out with breakdowns and even fires, but word is that it's just boring and that Disney once again cheaped out -- they took out all of the "offensive racist" animatronic animals from the Splash Mountain ride, but only replaced them with a handful of unimpressive Culturally Sensitive Animatronics.

Weirdly, even though the plot of the Princess and the Frog has Tiana being turned into a frog, the ride doesn't feature her in frog form. People are speculating they avoided that because they... didn't want to disrespect a Strong Black Female by reducing her to the state of froghood, even though that was the whole plot of the movie.

So Splash Mountain was problematic because it had Song of the South theming, and now this current ride is also problematic, because the movie promotes the harmful stereotype that black women sometimes transform into frogs.

They also didn't include voodoo theming in the ride, even though Tiana was turned into a frog by a voodoo spell. Reportedly they had PC reasons for avoiding voodoo -- wouldn't want to suggest that any real-world voodoo practitioners turn Strong Black Women into frogs. (They're also stripping out tiki torches and Polynesian theming from their Moana ride -- cultural appropriation!)

Honestly some voodoo theming might have been useful, given the reported lameness of the current ride. The ride is partly a "dark ride," where you're taken through dark indoor spaces, and that could have been a good place for ghosts and skeletons to scare you.

Instead of doing that, they replaced potential voodoo animatronics with... nothing.

Let me preempt any readers and say that I'm bored by this post.

Disney is dead, and it's no longer even worth saying.

You can't. It won't work. At least not for a long time.

They did this with Doctor Who, when they rewrote genesis and made it so the whole shebang got started with a little girl of color being tortured by wicked white men.

You cannot rewrite genesis and have the thing survive. This is an impossibility. When you rewrite genesis, you sully *everything* that came after.

They could repudiate the sequel trilogy and its descendants, but that's just cutting off a branch. It's fairly easy to do. It doesn't, in the mind of the fan, ruin the origin. But after destroying the origin, even rewatching pre-wreckage stuff will be different. It ruins the entire franchise.

Franchise operators need to be *very* careful with - and preferably avoid - prequels and origin stories for this reason. And they should *never* go after genesis. Fill in no blanks. Change nothing. Pretend it's behind a force field, or you risk wrecking *everything.*

There's another video game remake coming out that had one of those "Sweet Baby" DEI consulting firms on it. "Silent Hill 2" from 2001. The problem? A couple female characters in it were attractive. By 2001 graphics standards. One was dressed provocatively, for reasons that were important to the story, but who cares about plot and symbolism right? Have to defeat the "male gaze".

So they made one look like a tranny in a wig and the other look frumpy and unattractive.

Game maker responds it's being remade "for modern audiences."

It never ends with these companies.

Well, it was old but presented in new packaging. The whole hero with a thousand faces thing and Flash Gordon influence.

But...after more than a decade of movies being kind of downbeat overall (Midnight Cowboy was the third biggest movie at the box office the year it came out...today it would be forgotten on a streaming service before it premiered), Star Wars must have been a huge breath of fresh air. Clean, traditional storytelling with good guys, bad guys, and a joyful ending.

The original came out on my 6th birthday. I still remember seeing it with my dad that day. I obviously have seen the movie since so I can’t say my memory of the movie itself is from that day or not. I can tell you I was Princess Leia for Halloween this year and there is probably millions of dollars of Star Wars toys buried in Spangdahlem, DE. My dad was air defense artillery so we were at more Air Force bases than Army.

About 3 years ago, my Samsung Blu-ray player died. We went back to using the Samsung DVD player which is still doing its job despite being older than the blu-ray player.

Do you have any recommendations for a blu-ray player, preferably something that will last longer than 5 years?

Possibly good info: no 4K TV’s, so we don’t have any 4K discs. That could possibly change in the next decade, but is not currently something that we’re worried about.

265 My Samsung 4K player doesn't receive firmware updates anymore because Samsung stopped supporting their 4K players.

Ironically, it still plays ever 4K disc perfectly...but newer Blu-rays manufactured within the last 4 years or so tend to not work because there was an update to the Blu-ray disc encoding that needs updated firmware to read.

I'm not broken up about it. I have my PS5 right next to it. And both are above my PS4. And if either of those fail...my PS3 is waiting, unplugged, to be of use right next to the PS4.

270 As for the original SW: It opened in a town an hour away from us, and my then-wife and I drove to see it. It blew us away; we were Trek fans, but also written SF readers, and there were so many hints of and nods to written SF (the sand planet = Dune, etc.).

Also the most visually realistic effects up to that time. The space battle scenes, for instance. We didn't see Luke and Solo firing the blaster cannons, then cut to a shot of the attacking fighter ship blowing up. Oh, no. We saw the whole thing, over Luke or Solo's shoulder -- him, plus the cubby with the blaster, and out beyond the big ship, the explosion of the fighter. Astonishing.

Nearly fifty years on, I still have the memory of that opening scene and how blown away I was by it.

Lucas ruined Star Wars with Return of the Jedi. He finally could afford all the sfx he couldn't for the original SW. He essentially reshot the first movie, and went straight down hill from there.

But I still have SW:ANH and TESBA. I can ignore the deck that follows.

In the Star Wars novels, fighter pilots will intentionally dial down the inertial compensators to around 95% or so because they *need* to feel some acceleration in order to fly properly. They claim it helps them navigate and shoot better when they can feel the g's.

Hey, TJM. Question: I have been rewatching some shows on streaming and have noticed something odd. Was there an analog/digital standard swap sometime in the early 2010s? I have noticed video quality between shows can be extremely uneven, with some being fuzzy as hell and others looking pretty damn good.

I remember there was an over the air switch to digital, but I though it was in the early 2000s.

The amount of stuff that affects video quality is very large, starting with how things were filmed to begin with (film vs. video tape vs. digital, and even within that...what the quality of the capture was...8mm vs. 16mm vs. 35mm...etc.).

There was a switch from analog delivery to digital OTA delivery a while back, but it shouldn't affect a streaming source unless the stream originates from a record at the end of the delivery. Sources should be based on the actual sources.

I am very UN-happy that you cannot get the original cuts of the original trilogy anymore (and haven’t been able to for over 20 years). I think my parents still have a VHS trilogy from before Lucas “realized his vision”, but I don’t have a VCR.

A lot of science fiction books and movies make extrapolations of past and current physics and materials science theories and concepts. When a story becomes totally divorced from science and engineering that readers and viewers believe will be possible sometime in the future, it's a magic story.

Yeah, I don't get that.

Disney has a gigantic balance sheet and huge cashflows, mostly from the "experiences" segment (which is why trouble at Disney World is trouble for the company as a whole). Most of the company is a loser, but it can sustain its losses for quite some time. It's a bad company - badly run, badly managed, bad products, socially corrosive, etc. - and if it keeps up, Disney will *eventually* be a zero - but that zero is not right around the corner.

Of course, the final value of *any* enterprise is zero, but its managers have some influence over that. Disney's executives are chasing that zero, but there's a lot of ruin in an enterprise as large as Disney.

People struggle with the idea that these companies are supposed to operate by the principles of the marketplace.

If a company is supposed to make money, then the decisions being made, not just by Dinsey, but any number of other large corps would not make a lick of sense.

So then, consider the possibility that making money isn't their purpose. What could it be, then, if not making money.

Funny how that should open up some other possibilities, but if you want to cling to the notion that this is about profits and market share and all the rest of that 20th century stuff, you just aren't going to get it.

I think you are also forgetting a central tenet that is usually more important in Fantasy as opposed to sci-fi: Romance. A beautiful girl who is either a prime motive force for the plot or a central element.

It's amazing to me how often story analysis online forgets that central tenet and common part of the human experience. For men, it is about why you do the shit you do. For women, it is about being fought for and won.

There's a very real difference between the Gen-Xers who watched the movies as kids and then moved on, and the millennials who grew up with the "Expanded Universe" and based their whole personality around it.

I will quibble that I don't think the Star Wars trilogy are kids' films, though. They're General Audience movies, which is an important distinction. These days there are no Family/General Audience movies, but back then there were films every generation could go see and enjoy.
