Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wall Street Journal: Unexpectedly. the Economy Is Grinding to a HaltBest economy in history, Jack! My word as a Biden. Also I was appointed to Annapolis but blew it off because I was a Big Football Hero but Annapolis already had Roger Staubach as a quarterback so I went to the University of Delaware and rode the bench, Jack! David Strom is one of those lucky people who has a subscription to the WSJ, so I'll quote his quote. So income and disposable income actually fell. Got it. An important measure of regional economic health fell:
I know all of you know this, but in case you don't: One of the Fed's biggest tools for influencing the economy is raising or lowering interest rates. When the economy is slow or tipping into a recession, they lower interest rates. This allows the big banks to borrow money at low rates, which they then lend to companies at low rates. The net effect is to magic more dollars into the economy. This is inflationary, of course, but they think that goosing the economy with more dollars is better than a deep recession. When there is too much inflation -- too many of these magicked-into-existence dollars floating around -- they raise interest rates. So the big banks borrow less money and have less money to lend out. The money supply drops, which will, over time, reduce inflation, because inflation is caused by a surplus of dollars which cheapens the value of each dollar. The Fed is currently keeping interest rates at an elevated level to try to sop up some of the excess dollars that have caused 20% inflation over the past three years. So what does the Fed do when economic activity is grinding to a painful halt? They usually reduce interest rates. But they can't reduce interest rates, because inflation is already very high. Biden should be proud. 1970's style stagflation -- which is inflation plus low growth -- is back, baby! Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

The U.S. economy continues to lose momentum. Growth hasn't yet slowed to the point that it would be a concern to policymakers, but it might soon if current trends continue.
++++ Only because they're faking it. The addition - in current, nominal dollar terms - to GDP does not exceed the deficit. All of it is fake. Every last penny of it. *All* of the on-paper economic growth was put on the Federal credit card. Absent deficit spending - which is also the driver of inflation, as it must be because whether you borrow it or just print it, you're counterfeiting your own currency - we are in a recession. Which means that in practical terms, we are in a recession. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at June 04, 2024 12:27 PM (d04cU) 48

On a plane flight last week, I watched "The Ark and the Darkness." It purports to be a scientific explanation for several events described in the Old Testament, particularly the flood. It’s highly religious and accepts the bible as truth.
It was interesting. Was I convinced? No. But some of its critiques of the evolutionary scientists’ theories made good points. I have long been skeptical of some evolutionary theories, particularly when it comes to the end of the dinosaurs. I personally think the meteor theory is highly questionable if not outright bullshit invented for dramatic impact. The movie makes some fairly convincing points that the dinosaur bones aren’t nearly as old as commonly accepted (they found collagen and other soft tissues in dino bones), and that the meteor impact makes no sense. Worth a watch. Posted by: Elric Blade at June 04, 2024 12:28 PM (iFTx/) 65

When the economy is flooded with government spending, there isn’t much to be done, whether or not you love or hate the Fed.
Posted by: Catch Thirty-The33 at June 04, 2024 12:32 PM (8sMut) ++++ The Fed can't fix this. It can defend the Dollar by continuing to raise interest rates, but it cannot fix the problem. The Fed doesn't actually set interest rates - it tries to, and it has more than nominal influence, but it can't *compel* the market to follow its guidance. If the Fed were to set the rates to zero tomorrow, Treasuries - and everything indexed to them - would *not* follow along. The only way to do that would be to directly monetize the debt, which would cascade out into the market because everything is priced in Treasuries and immediately lose control of inflation. The Dollar would die. The Fed can help mediate by using its influence and control mechanisms to make money *more* expensive and thus punish the government for overspending, but it cannot solve the problem. The truth of "jobs Americans won't do" is that no, Americans by and large won't work for the SAME WAGE as an illegal. So when you change the wage, the job will of course be changed to incorporate different staffing levels, more technology/efficiency etc. Very few jobs for which there is no substitution of a different mix of per unit labor costs and other costs.
In other words, almost all jobs can and will be filled by Americans, only the "job" will become slightly different. If I were in their shoes, at this point I would win the election first, then have a select team in the new DOJ prosecute the conspiracy in Florida, where there is jurisdiction due to the Mar-a-Lago raid and some possibility of getting a decent jury. Then bring the Section 1983 civil action after the criminal action has done the discovery work for you.

I believe the single most important economical statistic is "Consumer Confidence." The economy is always about the future performance (as is consumer confidence).
Currently, CC sucks because the Biden Administration couldn't sell a floatation device to a drowning man. Quite frankly, they have nothing to sell since they purposefully submarined the US Economy to accommodate political goals and aspirations. Nearly 775,000 customers in Texas were without power at 9:50 a.m. Central Time
Central and northern Texans face Tuesday's most serious threat of severe weather. In the wake of morning storms, additional storms are likely to fire up in the afternoon. Large hail, lightning and wind gusts as strong as 80 mph are the main threats with any storm. A few tornadoes may also occur, according to the National Weather Service. Sweltering heat will accompany the storms across portions of Texas - part of a sprawling heat wave that has been baking the South in recent days. A less serious risk of severe storms stretches across swaths of the Southern Plains and a small portion of the Southeast, including most of Texas and parts of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and western New Mexico, according to the Storm Prediction Center. _AccuWeather Posted by: Braenyard at June 04, 2024 12:55 PM (5LFjM) 269

HP-35 came out when I was a college freshman. $795. Professors laughed at the kids in class with one. However, they were finishing their tests in 20 minutes, versus the hour that those of us with slide rules took. The next year, the HP-45 came out, and the -35 dropped to $395. Professors started buying them, and using them. Tests went to 60 minutes if you had a calculator, and you could get about 1/3 done with a sliderule. TI brought out the SR-50 at $225. I scrimped and saved to buy one to avoid flunking out.

There have been show trials throughout American history such as the Peter Zenger case, the Scottsboro Boys case, and so on. When the task is a legal one and all of the assembled are competent lawyers, then a low key lawyer within the local system can achieve wonders with a jury. This was no such situation. When it is a political task--you need junkyard dog lawyers that make it clear in a shit storm that everyone gets the face in it. 302 I agree about Trump's lawyers. They are prohibited from actually putting on a defense. The Judges keep good witnesses from testifying even if totally relevant. In this last trial, the defense was not even provided with what the crime was. How can you put up an adequate defense if you don't even know what the charge is?
Posted by: Sharon Actually, Merchan limited the scope of the former FEC Commissioner Bradley Smith but could not exclude him totally. Defense could have called him. There is also Allan Weisselberg, the Trump CFO, that could have been called by the defense. There are ways that a crafty lawyer can weave by questions into forbidden territory and the judge creates a Streisand effect when the judge in name only inevitably rises to the bait. Essentially, the Trump legal team was laying grounds for an appeal rather than confronting injustice up front which is a much more trying to avoid mistakes strategy than challenging the injustice up front and rubbing the jury's face in the pile of shit case concocted by Bragg and Co. To some extent, yes. But competent lawyering even in kangaroo courts does help set up appeals. See my comment above about the expert they inexplicably didn't put on. Not only did that undermine their trial strategy -- although I agree the trial was so corrupt I doubt anything would have made a difference -- but also their appeal strategy.
Posted by: Elric Blade at June 04, 2024 01:00 PM (iFTx/) This is the kind of second guessing that the peanut gallery always engages in from the sidelines. And if his trial team had instead been laser-focused on appellate issues, they'd be faulted for not focusing on trying to win at trial by being too distracted by appellate issues that may or may not fly after a trial loss. Planning to win on appeal is not a great strategy in the average criminal case, in general, and the faith people seem to have in appellate courts is questionable at best given how determined half the country is to cook Trump's goose by any means.

Posted by: Duncanthrax at June 04, 2024 01:04 PM (a3Q+t) =================== JJ Sefton had a Motley Fool article yesterday about M2 declining in a manner that previously has always led to a depression and massive unemployment. It also pointed out "this time could be different" because of the rapid covid increase in M2 the previous couple of years. But the Fed did that because velocity declined rapidly, meaning money changed hands many fewer times (people stayed home), which has now reversed, and so .... it's hard to figure. The sale was mandated by Congress in the budget bill, but it's not clear how it got there. There was a GAO report that said the existence of the northeast gasoline reserve was wasteful, but sometimes these things are just "Brer Rabbit" theater to give a rationale for what they already wanted to do anyway. That said, I'm generally in favor of the government selling assets rather than borrowing money. They should start with the trillion-dollar student loan portfolio. Ulan Bataar is a very metal name for a city. I think I want to go to Mongolia.
Posted by: Pug Mahon It used to be just "Ulan Bator," which I think is cooler, for some reason. Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at June 04, 2024 01:35 PM (v6JzV) It's because of all the sheep, Baatar Posted by: Hatari somewhere on Ventura Highway at June 04, 2024 01:42 PM (NtVYv) 571

first it was "you gotta floss, it is the only way to avoid cavities"
then it was "you gotta floss after each meal it is the only way to avoid cavities" Then I swear when I did that I got told to floss more often. At some point I figured it was like masks or losing 10lbs, if you fail to do it and you have problems then it is clearly your fault and if you do it and you have problems anyways, then you did it wrong and it is not the fault of the medical establishment that is giving you impossible tasks like some evil magician in a fairy tale. I just can't wait until they drain the Strategic Oil Reserve completely in the runup to the election as we get into a hot war with Russia and the Chicoms invade Taiwan.

can't wait until they start taxing unrealized gains at the federal level.
SHould be fun paying $5k or $10k every year for the privilege of being allowed to make mortgage payments on my home. BTW, Pinochet did nothing wrong except not go farther. Posted by: Smoothbrain McShitlib at June 04, 2024 03:29 PM (N/oGZ) 577
