THE MORNING RANT: The Only New “Records” Involving Tornadoes Are Record Hysteria and Record Media Coverage

Tornadoes have been all over the news recently, with non-stop coverage on most major media outlets. Of course, reporting on weather has long since ceased to be about just the weather events and their aftermath. Instead, we are treated to stories about Planet Earth raging in apocalyptic fury, with all manner of “extreme” weather events resulting from man-made global warming that altered the once-perfect 20th Century climate.

It is reported repeatedly – and falsely - that bad weather is due to man’s destructive reliance on fossil fuels, and that extreme weather events are getting more frequent and more intense because of man’s carbon sinning.

Because spring is the most tornadic season, tornadoes are the current hot topic. (To be fair, much of the media is already reporting as an undisputed fact that this is going to be a record year for hurricanes, even though there have been exactly zero tropical storms so far.)

Every story I’ve read about a specific tornado incident this year includes a paragraph or two with boilerplate language discussing how “experts” blame climate change for tornados becoming worse, or more intense, or more frequent, etc. Beyond that, there has been a blizzard of stories in major media outlets where the topic is specifically about how climate change / global warming is worsening the tornado problem. Here are a few examples.

“In a warmer world, tornado behaviour is changing” [BBC – 5/22/2024]

“Is there a climate change link to deadly, destructive tornadoes?” [ABC – 5/06/2024]

“Climate change is moving Tornado Alley and driving more tornado outbreaks” [NBC – 5/06/2024]

“Storm supercells will become more frequent in parts of U.S. thanks to climate change” [CBS – 02/21/2024]

“Here’s What We Know About how Climate Change is Influencing Tornadoes” [Washington Post – 04/02/2023]

As documented below, this is all simply false. Tornadoes are neither more frequent, nor more intense. In fact, there is currently a trend of decreasing numbers of the strongest tornadoes, which itself is just part of a cycle, of course. From the “Climate at a Glance - Tornadoes” page at The Heartland Institute, here is a graph using NOAA’s own data which shows that EF3 or higher tornadoes in the US (on a scale of EF0 to EF5) have been decreasing over the past half-century.

In fact, it was within the past decade that NOAA recorded the longest stretch of days without an EF3 or stronger tornado. There were 306 days between such strong tornadoes in the US, stretching from May 2017 to March 2018.

During that same recent stretch of mild tornado activity, there was also a record set for consecutive days without a tornado death.

Part of the great dishonesty in reporting “extreme” weather events such as tornadoes is that the likelihood of any specific location suffering a direct hit is very low, just like the odds of winning a raffle are very low. But it is an absolute certainty that someone will win the raffle, and it is also an absolute certainty that about 1,200 tornadoes per year are going to touch down in the United States. Certain communities are going to get hit by a tornado for the first time, an “unprecedented” event. That is not climate change, it’s probability and statistics.

While there may not have been an increase in the strongest of tornadoes in recent decades, there has been an increase in the total number of tornadoes detected in recent decades. But this is not due to there being more actual tornadoes, rather it’s due to improved technology that is able to record tornadoes that would otherwise be undocumented. Shockingly, NOAA still confirms this simple truth at its website. This is from the FAQ section of NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center:

Have there been any major changes or trends in yearly tornado counts?Tornado reports have increased, especially around the installation of the NEXRAD Doppler radar system in the mid 1990s. This doesn't mean that actual tornado occurrence has gone up, however. The increase in tornado numbers is almost entirely in weak (EF0-EF1) events that are being reported far more often today due to a combination of better detection, greater media coverage, aggressive warning verification efforts, storm spotting, storm chasing, more developmental sprawl (damage targets), more people, and better documentation with cameras (including cell phones) than ever. Modern averages of roughly 1200 per year nationwide probably are as close to the truth as we've ever seen. Another few decades of well-documented tornadoes will tell us more. To compare tornado counts before Doppler radars, we have to either adjust historical trends statistically to account for the unreported weak tornadoes of before, or look only at strong to violent (EF2-EF5) tornadoes, whose records are much better documented and more stable. When we do that, very little overall change has occurred since the 1950s.

Tony Heller has done amazing research on old, archived newspaper reports of various natural disasters, including droughts, heat waves, hurricanes, flooding, etc. Regarding tornadoes, here are just a few of the numerous old stories he has dug up. These were all awful events, but there wasn’t national broadcast media giving round the clock coverage to them. Mr. Heller’s links include a snapshot of the newspapers’ front pages if you’d like to see the actual page-one coverage from many decades ago of these terrible weather events.

“On March 21, 1932, tornadoes killed more than 200 people in the south, including more than 150 in Alabama.”

“On May 25, 1955, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas were devastated by tornadoes which killed more than 100 people. Udall, Kansas was completely destroyed.”

“On this date in 1896, an F4 tornado killed dozens of people near Des Moines.”

“More than 100 people were killed in Illinois by tornadoes on May 26, 1917.”

“On May 27, 1896 St. Louis was largely destroyed by a tornado - which killed more than 100 people.”

The simple lie that weather is becoming more severe is simply disproven by history. In 1900 the city of Galveston, TX was destroyed by a hurricane. It was the worst natural disaster in US history, with more than 8,000 lives lost on Galveston Island alone, and many more killed on the mainland. Not even 21 months later, the town of Goliad, TX was flattened by a monster tornado, with more than 100 lives lost in that small town. If that sequence of natural disasters were to happen now, the climatistas would claim these events were scientific proof that Texas must cease all oil and gas production.

The belief that bad weather is caused by sinners among us is perhaps the most primitive of religious beliefs. Sadly, our ruling class and media are enthusiastic believers in The Sustainable Organic Church of the Carbon Apocalypse. As upsetting as we may find their push for global communism to “save” us from their imaginary eco-doom, it is downright despicable how we “climate deniers” are smeared by the elites as being responsible for tornadoes and hurricanes because we refuse to surrender our freedom to the climate cult.

If the day came that there was never another carbon molecule burned for fuel, and if every human life were extinguished from the Earth to save the planet, there would still be on average just as many tornadoes and hurricanes as before, as they moved through their various cycles of frequency and strength.

The only “records” being set for tornadoes and other natural disasters is record media coverage and record hysteria.

Our lust for climate-destroying fossil fuels drives the demand for new fracking activity to rip hydrocarbons from the loving bosom of our Earth-Mother, and fracking often causes small tremors and there is the potential risk of larger earthquakes as a result of fracking activities.

Areas where fracking occurs are seismically more active than before they were fracked. Our selfish indifference to climate change and unslakable thirst for oil leaves us discontented with merely polluting the atmosphere and triggering extreme weather events and our destructive tendencies now cause the earth to literally shake from the trauma our short-sighted dependence on destructive energy sources.

Violent extraction of resources must come to an end. The earth is for loving, not for exploiting.

75 I have another take on this hysteria about climate change-caused weather events, thanks to wisdom spoken by a grizzled, old uncle many years ago. His advice to my parents when shopping for a new home was this: buy in an area that was one of the first developed in the town. The early settlers built where it was safest from the elements.

As our country has grown, massive housing developments spread farther outside of cities into areas that have long been vacant. Sure, some of it is due to, say, these being a farm site or some other large property. But we all know that "tornadoes always hit trailer parks" because they are built on previously unwanted property within known tornado zones. No doubt these new housing developments are placed in other areas at greater risk for flooding, high winds, fires, etc.. Exhibit A here in Colorado is the town of Marshall. But again and again, we watch the news and see that new developments, such as the town of Parker (SE of Denver) gets hit harder with snow, winds, hail, and recall Uncle Bob's wisdom: the early settlers didn't build in Parker for a reason!

86 I believe anthropogenic global warming is a hoax, but there is good reason to expect a higher than normal Atlantic hurricane season, according to Houston hurricane experts. The El Niño weather pattern should be fading, and with that change comes a decreased wind shear. That wind shear suppresses the formation of hurricanes by dispersing the vertical air column that feeds the wind rotation.

More storms in the Atlantic will be able to organize themselves into tropical storms and hurricanes, not because of Gaia’s wrath but because of prevailing wind patterns. The weather people forecasting this pattern are good at it - they forecast Hurricane Harvey rainfall and motion to a T, way ahead of anyone else. Where they go is anyone’s guess.

This is true. Ohio had a nice number of tornadoes this spring. (If you want to call that mixture of wind, rain, and a little late snow a "spring".) But all of them were in the F0-F1 range, which while unpleasant were nothing in the class of the '74 monsters that ripped up the western portions of Cincinnati and tried to flatten all of Xenia.

Some outfit in Portland, Oregon installed 48 huge windmills on the Peirce Ranch in Wharton and Matagorda Counties. Gonna be a hoot when a hurricane takes them out. To compliment the windmills there are hundred of acres of solar panels near and under them. It's about 30 miles west of where hail destroyed several hundred acres of them near Needville, Tx.

Venice, in particular, is sinking (but you probably already knew that). If the polar caps actually did melt (which is just weirdly unlikely), the ocean would rise a couple of inches.

The real fear right now (according to Internet fear mavens), is the magnetic poles swinging (there's a lot more to this, with tectonic shifts based on the magma core becoming off centered and unsymetrical, which is apparently already happening), and in the ensuing shift, the seas would slosh GREATLY and temporarily flood a lot of coastal areas around the world. Might kill millions.

Friend of mine used to fly pipeline patrol in Alberta. The western part of the province is heavily forested. When flying pipelines out in the west country, he ran across tornado tracks, marked by downed trees. They begin, run a distance, and end, and never passed within sight of a road or human habitation.

Group prayers do seem to have an effect. I've seen it with the church men's group I joined. We routinely get notifications about prayer requests through the GroupMe app. Then we acknowledge we are praying for whatever. Shortly thereafter, we often get a report of a positive outcome, even for dire situations.

We had this discussion on the ONT a couple of months ago. According to Publius, who has been studying that stuff for years, what should happen is that the Earth's field becomes chaotic, going from a dipole to a quadropole configuration, and then settles in to the reversed dipole configuration. There seems to be no indication of mass extinctions associated with such reversals in the fossil record. So, probably a big nothingburger when it finally happens.

We can't actually measure the wind speed. Wind tunnel tests were run on assemblies of typical construction assemblies and the level of damage was tabulated.

The damage after a real tornado is observed in the field and referenced back to what was observed in the wind tunnels.

The media will always grab the wind speed from the tables (I think we all use the modified Fujits scale ) and report it as factual wind speeds. But we can't (unless someone has figured out a way I don't know about) actually measure them.

I would be surprised.

Elections are fiction, but they're a useful fiction. They're expected. They're central to national identity and power legitimacy. Every system has the symbols and rituals of legitimacy. No matter how often they're violated or how obviously useless or broken they are, they will *always* be observed, even if just to keep up appearances.

In Red China, the Party semi-regularly ices one of its own people to keep up appearances and has courts and everything else. It doesn't need them to technically function, but it *has* them because they have to. In the US where legitimacy - in concept, though not in fact - stems from the people, the people *must* be given a voice, even if it's just to shout into a vacuum. Elections serve that purpose.

People will put up with a lot if you give them an excuse to pretend to believe that things are functional and that there are rules. If you take that away, things tend to get sporty.

There is no actual support in the US Senate for actual principled conservative judges. Even Reagan fouled up with his half assed ones.

Simply put, stare decisis of bad decisions is the exact opposite of what you should aim for. Judicial restraint where you fail to correct injustices as they occur is the same as justice delayed is justice denied.

Both of those principles that Federalist Society holds so dear create a ratchet effect in law where everything bad or unjust is conserved. That is Federalist Society (and std. GOPe) conservatism aka surrender to the left.

She think I'm an independent who hates them all (which isn't far from the truth) and I kept telling her I wasn't comfortable with them trying to take him off the ballot or put him in jail.

On my way out her door I said I was looking forward to the election being the way she wants it - "just like they do it in Iran". One guy on the ballot.

I think you might be underestimating the anger of the American people. Millions of people are waking up to what we've known for years. They conspiracy theorists were correct.

A lot of people, even people who voted for Trump, didn't believe the claims of election rigging. After what they have seen over the last couple of years and particularly over the last couple of months I think just about all of them believe it now.

Trump raised $39 million dollars last night in small dollar donations. That's a lot of anger.

If you want anger, Joe, check out the pro-Trump posts by the Blacks on social media. The regime's policies with housing and aiding the illegals was the wakeup backhand long held back. They are angry at being so casually taken for granted, and they sympathize with Trump as a man being persecuted by the system for daring to challenge it. If the Democrats don't put energy into winning the "urban vote" they may be in for a surprise.

The regime's money is gone and inflation will continue to spiral and that will grind the faces of those who don't own assets that keep pace with inflation. Basically any more government spending will cause more pain and inflation to those not directly getting the money. Even the poor are finding their gimmedats don't go as far now. High interest rates that may even go higher will continue to kill business investment and that in turn will kill the GDP. Legal uncertainty due to Lawfare makes it worse.

It is fairer to say that a lot of casual low info people don't pay attention to much politics until it becomes an imperative. Rising voter participation rates is usually a marker of a) fraud in some nations or b) repudiation of the current regime.

When occasional voters self activate instead of partisans, then whatever predictions of what will happen politically don't jive with what happens.

Essentially, Trump is building an independent coalition that hates Dems and only slightly less hates GOP in office. To the extent that RFK figures in, ditto.
