Politico Headline: "Democrats in full-blown 'freak-out' over Biden"

Obviously, the Robert DeNiro stunt is motivated by this "freak-out." Democrats need a momentum shift. They had been counting on the four (FOUR!) lawfare trials to provide this shift. But Fani Willis reduced her effort to low comedy and the Supreme Court is examining issues (such as presidential immunity) which may delay the two federal cases.

And this current trial has been a complete disaster. Even if a rigged jury delivers a guilty verdict, the country has heard enough details about Stormy Daniels' and Michael Cohen's absurd testimony to discount the entire case.

So professional make-up wearer Robert DeNiro tries doing something he's failed at in his last ten movies, injecting drama and drawing an audience.

The article notes that donors keep asking insiders what their sense of the election is. That is, they want reassurance that they are not just wasting their money backing a sure loser.

DeNiro's stunt is probably more about giving donors a plausible comeback story than winning actual votes.

I don't think this is going to be enough, with Biden's own bagman son going on trial in June.

(During Pride Month?! DURING PRIDE MONTH?!!)

A pervasive sense of fear has settled in at the highest levels of the Democratic Party over President Joe Biden's reelection prospects, even among officeholders and strategists who had previously expressed confidence about the coming battle with Donald Trump.

Keep talkin' that sexy talk, baby.

All year, Democrats had been on a joyless and exhausting grind through the 2024 election. But now, nearly five months from the election, anxiety has morphed into palpable trepidation, according to more than a dozen party leaders and operatives. And the gap between what Democrats will say on TV or in print, and what they'll text their friends, has only grown as worries have surged about Biden's prospects.

"You don't want to be that guy who is on the record saying we're doomed, or the campaign's bad or Biden's making mistakes. Nobody wants to be that guy," said a Democratic operative in close touch with the White House and granted anonymity to speak freely.

But Biden's stubbornly poor polling and the stakes of the election "are creating the freakout," he said.

"This isn't, 'Oh my God, Mitt Romney might become president.' It's 'Oh my God, the democracy might end.'"

BRB, batin'

... Democratic critics of the campaign's approach -- while agreeing that abortion should be a winning issue -- said they're challenged when pressed by friends to make the case for why Biden will win.

"There's still a path to win this, but they don't look like a campaign that's embarking on that path right now," said Pete Giangreco, a longtime Democratic strategist who's worked on multiple presidential campaigns. "If the frame of this race is, 'What was better, the 3.5 years under Biden or four years under Trump,' we lose that every day of the week and twice on Sunday."

In the swing state of Michigan, Democratic state Rep. Laurie Pohutsky suggested Biden's standing is so tenuous that down-ballot Democrats can't rely in November "on the top of the ticket to pull us along."

...

Whatever the Biden campaign has been doing over the past two months -- and it's a lot of activity, including $25 million in swing-state ad spending, according to AdImpact -- it has had only a limited effect. According to FiveThirtyEight, Biden's average job-approval rating on March 7, the date of his State of the Union Address, was 38.1 percent. As of Friday, it's 38.4 percent.

++++
Again, I doubt it. Doubt it fairly seriously. People on the politicking side of things might be deeply worried, but something tells me that the Politburo isn't too concerned about any of this. The Party will remain entrenched and in charge, Trump or no Trump.

But articles like these are becoming more common. I am not yet of the opinion that the Party will let Trump win in November, but I do think the probability is increasing. This is a lot of "softening up" and if it isn't to terrify the rubes into agreeing - and it doesn't seem to be, apparently being focused on intra-Party positioning - then the odds of it being focused on preparing the rubes for the Party's decision to let Trump win increase.

How does one measure whether one won a debate or not?

In a college debate setting, I could see winning on points and such, but since the point of a political debate is to win votes, not points, then shouldn't the real measure be the election?

And if the counting of ballots has to be shut down in six states in the middle of the night to ballot box stuff like Tammany Hall, wouldn't that help indicate which side won the debate and which side lost?

I think there's an argument for that, but his ties to unpopular policy now makes him more specifically tied to unpopular things. My take is that any Democrat will still be tied to those unpopular things, so if they last second replace him with Newsom (it ain't happening, Biden is going to be on the ticket), it'll Newsom on top of the same unpopular policies.

Maybe the Democrat brand is simply eroding.

The hopeful note in that story is that the Ohio GOP is so dysfunctional that they can't agree on how hard they want to surrender on this topic. Some might say that its failure theater/11D chess trying to seem like they aren't being mean to Old Man Joe but just disagree on the details here, but apparently there is real bad blood between the Ohio House and Ohio Senate despite (because?) they are both controlled by Republicans. Which if true would be some real passive/aggressive BS but I don't buy it.

Boss move would be to say "this law was passed on this date when Democrats were in control. We believe in the rule of law, and the laws apply to everyone."

The Dems can fix this by doing a Zoom call where they "confirm" Biden by August 7 and then doing their convention on the 23d as planned. It isn't like they are going to put someone else on the ticket. It's their screwup, make them fix it.

201 William Kristol: We're Nearing the Home Stretch. Can Biden Close the Gap? In the fall of 2016, I didn’t really grasp the risk of a Trump victory until I was on TV in September, I think, with a Trump supporter and a Clinton supporter. The Trump surrogate ratted off four or five things Trump would do—build the wall, ban Muslims, get tough on crime, no more Middle East wars, bring back manufacturing. Also, Hillary was bad.

The Clinton supporter, on the other hand, couldn’t encapsulate the Clinton agenda at all crisply. Ironically, I remembered then the remark by Bill Clinton that Americans prefer strong and wrong over weak and right. And I, who loathed Trump and had discounted Trump’s chances, thought: Yikes.

I’m in a Yikes mood again. Trump’s campaign in 2024—for all of Trump’s personal lack of discipline—has intelligible messages: Things were better under Trump. Maybe a guilty verdict in New York—if there is one—will do some damage. Maybe Biden’s financial advantage will start to make a difference. Maybe nothing can really change until the June 27 debate...

217 One thing we need to account for as motivation by the Dems:

They believe they are doing good, that they are the good guys.

So, when you're trying to see if it's "they are failing and desperate" or "they're so confident they're winning, they don't care" the people who think they are the good guys never consider they are losing.
We're talking 3-4 generations now raised on the myth that victory over the bad guys in WWII was inevitable, even more sure the South never could have won.
Nothing is desperate, nothing is out-of-bounds, nothing is too far when you're the good guy that always wins.
Each escalation is not a horror but a kindness to the inevitable loser to reform before you are forced to destroy them.
We are the inevitable losers they see need reformed ....

Democrats will do it again in 2024 because not a single one of them who did it have suffered a single consequence. In fact, they have almost all personally profited from the cheat, like Katie Hobbs going from Secretary of State to governor of AZ.

And what they've done worked. The Party is firmly in control, and there's no reason to expect this to change. They did all those things you mentioned, and hamstrung him. He got virtually nothing through Congress, because the Party said no. He got few of his people through confirmation because the Party said no. He got little reform in the executive agencies because the Party said no. Anyone who was actually on Trump's side rather than a Party collaborator was cut down (as you mention).

Critical Drinker has a good take on it. A good movie and a good story line. But not what audiences are looking for out of Mad Max - we know how Furiosa ends up in Fury Road so a lot of the dramatic tension is gone. And did we really need Furiosa's backstory?

We should encourage the Democrats to speculate about replacing Biden.

Because it's not Biden that's unpopular-- it's his policies.

420 Let's be clear - static analysis has its faults. 2024 is not 2020 is not 2016. Some states have cleaned up the whole mail-in unmonitored drop box BS and others have not. In some places, Republicans have decided well we need to harvest ballots, too. And, to date, the other side is not openly conducting war games about how they will steal the election.

There is no doubt the Dems are going to attempt the same shenanigans because 1 it worked and B nobody got in trouble for it. Whether the attempt succeeds or not depends on a lot of other things that have changed, too.

The only one I know that's been arrested for fraud is the broad in TX that O'Keefe's team reported on. She got tried and convicted.

2024, they've already got 100,000 poll workers ready across the country to be at various polling stations and registered as watchers, so there should be less opportunity for shenanigans.

481 "The Fraud" is not some magical dial they can turn to some pre-set level of deciBidens at will. They won't be as brazen as they were in 2020 because, frankly, they didn't get away with it. Sure, there were no legal or political repercussions, but that in itself was the problem. They needed to let a couple patsies twist in the wind to assuage the public. But they didn't. They went full J6 and hermetically sealed any avenue that even remotely rhymed with redressing grievance. And the people by and large put up with it, because that's what Americans do. Give the story an ending and it will go away. But they can't go back to that well again and get away with it the same way.

Also, 2020 was still coasting on the toadies and henchmen of the Obama regime. They had cohesion and omerta. This Junta is more of a hodgepodge of holdovers and nepots and diversity hires, so there's no one in charge nationally to co-ordinate "The Steal" in the same way.

At least, that's what i figure is going on.

To be fair, that's what Fulton County, GA seems to do every presidential election: Declare some sort of emergency, like broken pipes, then force all the poll watchers out of the building, and once the coast is clear, run run run sketchy ballots through the voting machines. And the judges, the DAs, the Governor, the State Supreme Court, and state legislators just shrug their shoulders and wag their fingers.

I have a good memory. And I remember that the Congress would not pass more funding for the border wall. And delayed the vote as much as they could--in the Senate that "we controlled".

In fact, Trump had to pass a Constitutional test at the SCOTUS to redistribute funding for another project to the wall.

So you can stuff your justification crap.

Oh well, welcome to the party. What made you vote for Biden in the first place? You did no due diligence and study this man's 50+ year record as a BigGov leech and liar?
