At first I thought that was great; they’d see how legally vacuous is the prosecution’s case and explain that to the rest of the jury. But now I think they’re probably the enforcers… they were guilty votes before the trial even started and they can bully any holdouts that might exist into voting for conviction. It's not that they weren't good, it's that they tasted so strongly of chemicals it was unreal. I guess is both a flaw in the original system, or else a nature in that we get what we vote for good and hard
++++ Both and neither. Most of these people don't win with majorities, or don't win at all. People check out, especially at the local level in big places like NYC. Why bother checking in? It's a rigged game. Tons of people - possibly even a majority - know that it's just theater. Why bother participating when nothing ever changes? We have a nicely "managed democracy" where the managers do whatever they please in any case. The vote is symbolic. It's a necessary symbol, but it isn't meaningful in many or most places. The machinery runs on its own and if someone threatens it, they'll just steal an election. Democracy is flawed. So is every other system. None of those flaws - not of democracy, not of dictatorship, not of monarchy - are necessarily fatal. Few systems devised by man are universally fatal (socialism is a notable exception). The fundamental fatal flaws in all of them ultimately acts as the undoer for all of them: corruption and incompetence. All eventually fall to one or both. As are we. Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at May 28, 2024 08:09 AM (Qn59F) ++++ Yes there is. It won't happen, but it *could* be done. It would look something like: 1. Identify all non-defense discretionary spending and cut 50% of it. 2. Reduce defense spending by 50% (and surrender the empire to focus solely on domestic defense as a result) 3. Shore up the finance side of Social Security. SS is a huge chunk of the budget, but it's deficits are manageable. Increase the tax cap by 50%, bump the rate by half a point and ruthlessly crack down on SSDI. SS is saved. 4. Contain medical costs. Either fix the medical system (hard) or nationalize the whole thing and cut it down (catastrophic, but easier). Probably double the Medicare tax. There. Now there's room in the budget to actually retire debt instead of constantly refinancing it. But too many rice bowls would be shattered, and it would likely result in double-digit unemployment and a minimum 20% hit to GDP, perhaps as high as 30% over a few years. And we'd be back on top within 10 years. But the ruling system might not survive reform like that. So off the cliff we'll go. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 28, 2024 08:20 AM (d04cU) 150

This year, I'm going to avoid commerce and media as much as possible for a month. I don't feel like being part of the spectacle. It's too weird. For the younger generation, this is all normal. But for us ancient old men of 40, it's Felliniesque to watch an entire great nation bow and scrape and grovel for a solid month before the altar of sodomy.
Every school. Every business. Every television network and streaming service. The churches. The military. Everyone must publicly celebrate homosexuality during America's bizarre new Holy Month. There is one very real downside to good carrot cake, though: cost. Proper carrot cake made by someone who knows what he's doing is not a cheap thing to acquire.

We owe them more than our gratitude — they have more than earned access to quality mental health services, job opportunities, housing assistance, and the benefits they were promised. Bush posted on her congressional X account: This #MemorialDay & every day, we honor our veterans in St. Louis. We must invest in universal health care, affordable housing, comprehensive mental health services, and educational & economic opportunities for our veterans as we work to build a world free of war and violence. What would Newsweek prefer Trump say? I think he also said (not a direct quote) that their killing was barbaric and things are ghastly in Haiti, which is true.

Posted by: LinusVanPelt It's actually a funny story, and shows how petty and long-lasting cultural issues are in the Balkans. After the breakup of Yugoslavia, they called themselves "Macendonia", but Greece was all butt-hurt because they have a northern region called "Macedonia", and there's all sorts of bickering over who has claim to Alexander The Great's legacy and such, so it was called FYROM among NATO countries (Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia). In order to join NATO (which requires unanimous consent) and other international groups, they had to change their name to The Northern Republic of Macedonia in order for the Greeks to approve. This way Greece gets to keep the "true" Macedonia, and this country is just the northern section of it. Posted by: Military Moron at May 28, 2024 08:55 AM (JCZqz) 294

Guilty as charged with immediate incarceration while appeals go forward... which will take a decade. Legally speaking it doesn't seem like there's a case here, but it has nothing to do with anything remotely legal or illegal. It's purely political and the legal eagles who pontificate on X don't seem to get this. Posted by: Martini Farmer at May 28, 2024 08:46 AM (Q4IgG) I read some legal explanation that a second (or object) crime was needed beyond the bookkeeping misdemeanors to presto chango turn this into 34 felonies. The prosecutors haven’t yet ID’d the object crime but hinted it could be a NY election statue or maybe a federal misdemeanor. So Biden’s number 3 at DOJ (yep he left DOJ to prosecute this case) is essentially arguing that 1 misdemeanor + another misdemeanor = 36 felonies. And Merchan might well codify this logic in jury instructions! And the object crime STILL hasn’t been stated! How you can defend yourself when the crime hasn’t even been defined?? The more you know, the bigger sham it becomes. Beria is blushing Posted by: LinusVanPelt at May 28, 2024 08:57 AM (xT8gx) 304

Recon of our utility infrastructure, and of key ingress and egress roadways. Foreign front companies actually being permitted to work and map, first hand, our infrastructure. One of the key problems the potential activist base on the right has is...what the hell does one do to really make a difference? Normal politics gets us almost nowhere since the GOPe is still largely controlled opposition (yes getting ever so slightly better...slightly) Civil disobedience gets us treated the same as if we Al Qaeda - look at the peaceful protesters murdered on Jan 6th let alone the thousands arrested on political charges And then...yes...so many people jump to civil war. Well...what does that actually mean? You have a militia you are reporting to? That isn't controlled opposition itself? Because if you act by yourself FedGov will just isolate you and kill/arrest you...and everyone around you too. If you look at the 1776 model the patriots had organizations they had been building up for years to fight the crown both legally...and on the field. As the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducts another assault in the north of Gaza, they face significant criticism from Western officials and analysts who are asking why the IDF is repeatedly going into areas they have already cleared and conducting further operations. Critics claim this behavior reflects a flaw in operational design, or is even proof that Israel’s campaign against Hamas has failed. The flaw, however, lies in their own assumptions.
These critics are looking at IDF tactics through the lens of Western counterinsurgency (COIN), the doctrine that U.S. and European militaries applied in the failed campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq. In the “global war on terror,” Western tactics were to seize a chunk of territory and clear it of enemies through military force. The plan was then to hold the territory through forward operating bases (or FOBs) and try to conduct alternative governance in those areas while providing security. The system of FOBs meant that our enemies, embedded in the local civilian population, always knew where we were and what routes we were likely to use. They could mortar, rocket, and IED us at will. Books are one of the better ways to bribe someone. Have them hire a ghostwriter and then give them whatever bribe/advance you want. If need be you can "balance the books" by having NGOs/government organizations buy copes of the books as well even if literally no one ever reads them. I have noticed that those who say this never do shit other than talk.
One of the key problems the potential activist base on the right has is...what the hell does one do to really make a difference? Normal politics gets us almost nowhere since the GOPe is still largely controlled opposition (yes getting ever so slightly better...slightly) -- We've also just really had all of our suspicions confirmed in the last few years. Add to that how we're the "law and order" side and believe in working within the system - that we now know is infested and incredibly difficult to work inside of because of the infestation. And we've been shown that unapproved speech and/or protest is not allowed. It's a tight spot.
