Love the Pet Thread, so I decided to share some pictures of my dog with the Horde. This is Trevor, my current German Shepherd. When I lost my previous German Shepherd, Max, several years ago, I knew I had to get another one because they are great dogs. With the help of All-Shepherd Rescue, I adopted Trevor last year. He's now 8 years old and a super companion who loves chasing squirrels and other varmints in the backyard. I sent you several pictures so you can choose which to include. They are, from top to bottom - Trevor recuperating after his first bath, Trevor on his couch (that I am sometimes allowed to share), and Trevor in the snow. Hopefully, he'll be with me for a long time. When I occasionally post, it's as Retired, thank God.What a great dog! Hi! Mitten turns 16 this year. She got a little arthritis, but cosequin has helped a lot; she can jump up on tables again, and bloody my thigh trying to climb in my lap, just like before! Like my other cats, she prefers to sleep on my dirty laundry. When awake, she wants lots of cuddling. Bless the animals and the people who love and care for them. Thanks!Sweet, sweet mitten! Hi KT-after seeing the greyhounds of NR Pax in last week's Pet Thread, I thought it would be fun to send in pictures of the Galgos I am dog-sitting. Galgos are slightly smaller greyhounds that speak Spanish, and are rabbit hunters, not racers, though Galgos are very speedy. Unfortunately, once a Galgo ceases being a good, productive hunter, the owners may abandon or kill the dog. This is allowed under Spanish law, as Galgos are classed as livestock and not as domesticated pets. These two Galgos came to the US from one of the Spanish Galgo rescues. As you can see, they are couch potatoes in the same manner as greyhounds, only changing their sleeping location on the couch as the day progresses. With so much of the greyhound racing venues closed down, retired racers are getting more difficult to find for adoption. A Galgo can be a good compromise choice, though much care should be exercised if you have cats or small dogs. "Cat safe" is not a common Galgo (or any sight hound) trait, and "cat trainable" can mean "as long as the cat doesn't move." LisanA breed that's new to me! Thanks for the great details. They look relaxed. Buckley says he's ready for @Pride! month...Can't be angry at a dog with a face like that, can you? I love the Pet Thread so much. It's so interesting and touching to hear everyone's pet stories. Two of the three in the trio picture (Al the tuxedo and Bing the white guy) have been on the Pet Thread before. They were with the long-haired tuxedo in the single picture, Sy, who died two and a half years ago and it's taken me that long to talk about it. He was such a darling. The gray fluffball came along from a rescue a few months later. They said he came from a hoarding stitution but they didn't specify animal or other but I suspect both. They were surprised that I chose him at the rescue. They said all they did was hide in the corner of the cage and wouldn't interact with anyone. I said that I could see that, but I thought he needed me. He's an odd one. Doesn't speak at all, and it took two years for him to warm up enough to jump on the bed with the other two clowns. Very shy still, and very sweet natured. His name is Jimmie, after Jimmie Lunceford, American jazz alto saxophonist and bandleader in the swing era. I name all my cats after jazz people. Cheers to you, K.T. for all your excellent posts, and to all the morons! Lurker iamfelixJimmie is a beautiful cat. And I know the feeling, not being able to mention the loss of Sy for so long. The three cats look great together. I am sad to announce that on Tuesday, we had to have Duncan put to sleep. He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma back in April and it quickly took a toll on him. He was a playful and lovable boy who viewed every person, dog, cat and rabbit as a new friend. Attached is a picture from the day we adopted him. -NR PaxWe are so sad that you have lost Duncan. He looks and sound like a wonderful dog.

Hi, Lisan! Loved the picture of the Galgos. My wife and I are contemplating adopting one the Greyhound supply dwindles too much.
I remember seeing one in a shelter in Spain. 7 months old, solid black except for its face which was half black and half white. So glad I'm not an impulse shopper. Posted by: NR Pax at June 01, 2024 03:38 PM (lXCUP) 4

Had to go to the vet this week to take one of our dogs (Shaylee) across the Rainbow Bridge.
Vet cried too, because that dog was such a good fighter. She was given 6-12 months to live over four years ago, before she finally started to shut down. Was very happy for 99% of that period. I wish I was at least half as tough as a good mutt! Posted by: Pillage Idiot at June 01, 2024 03:41 PM (HlyYF) 7

lin-duh,
For a "proper" Pride Month celebration, you need to feed your dog several more colors of pens. (Of course, then when the other dogs mock his appearance, it will be a "hate crime".) /sarc off Posted by: Pillage Idiot at June 01, 2024 03:44 PM (HlyYF) Posted by: Pillage Idiot at June 01, 2024 03:46 PM (HlyYF) 11

Her Majesty and Diana should be getting to Boise soon, the penultimate stop on their week-long trip to the BCOA National Specialty in Pasco, WA next week. Diana has been a good girl but she's not accustomed to long-distance travel and, away from her home routine, has been difficult about eating and taking care of her business. She also mooches after Mommy's coffee, a real no-no. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at June 01, 2024 04:08 PM (MoZTd) 22
17: Osteo is a nasty disease when it hits greyhounds. At his age, the only option we had was to keep him comfortable as long as we could.
But I will balance out the sad with a funny story about him. There was a place in our yard that was his poop corner. For some reason he preferred going there when he was turned out. One day, there was a rabbit in that area. He walked right up to the rabbit and stared at him for a moment. The rabbit did one hop away and Duncan turned and pooped right where the rabbit had been and walked off. The rabbit had a look on his face that said "This was not how I expected the encounter to go." Cat safe" is not a common Galgo (or any sight hound) trait, and "cat trainable" can mean "as long as the cat doesn't move."
We had two cats for several years that were just fine with our dogs. And when we started fostering, they helped out. Mercutio would rub up against the dog and walk underneath him. The dog was typically frozen in horror at the cat's antics. As for Benvolio, he would walk up to the dog and punch them. And then he would stare at them as if daring them to try something. Between the two of them, we helped Greyhounds right off the track that cats belonged in the house. There was only one exception and he went to a non-cat house. Afternoon, pet folken,
Handsome and beautiful pets today. Iamfelix, your Jimmie looks like he just woke up from a nap. "Damn, another picture? Can't the hoomans just do when we're asleep?" And Bing looks like Miss Linda's late Annabelle. Pure white cats, shorthair or long, seem to be fairly rare. They are at a disadvantage in the wild, I've been told, because they are so visible to predators. Linda's Annabelle was making a living cadging handouts, and bullying other abandoned or feral cats, in our apartment complex after Katrina. She was very much a pet cat; somebody must have turned her loose before the storm -- which with cats is not too bad a thing if you have absolutely no alternative. They can usually hunt. Annabelle did not like other cats. Yet it was her destiny to live with Marie the smart black cat and Angelique the Siberian until they each passed away and left the throne to her. Big black Stirling was sleeping with me, and has leaped to the arm of the sofa to block my lamp light. He's taken to squeaking at me when he wants petting. Little Dagny La Siberienne is settled atop papers on the dinette table. An utterly silent girl, she will occasionally be found sleeping with me when I wake up.
June 11 will be two years since I made the epic trek to Vicksburg and came home with him. One of the best expenditures of my time and gasoline I've ever made. Of course I tell him he's flawed and will have to go back. Doesn't seem to worry him in the slightest. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 01, 2024 04:27 PM (omVj0) 30
NR Pax-I am so very sorry about Duncan, and know your heart must be heavy-mine is for you.
The Galgos are a good choice for Greyhound experienced owners, but also for prospective owners that may be new to sight hounds. Galgos are probably more plentiful than Greys right now-here on the West Coast, there are long wait lists for retired racers (most coming from Mexico), and many of the rescues are limiting their adoption geography. A couple greyhound rescues have pivoted to Galgos as an option with Greys so scarce. I have been around both breeds, and I just notice a bit of size difference, though I know one larger male Galgo that are Greyhound size. State-side, Save a Galgo Espanol [SAGE] has locations in PA and CA-they get their Galgos from Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert (FBM) in Spain-I think FBM is the primary source for most of the Galgos brought to the US. Stirling, however, has some thinning spots in his fur. They are not ringworm; he's not scratching at them. He's still plushy black everywhere else. The vet was at a loss to explain it, and gave him a steroid shot late last year on general principles, but it didn't seem to help. I'll buy a new Shark steam mop and give the carpet a good going over; there may be something in the carpeting that's irritating his skin without being itchy and causing his fur to thin out.
Any other ideas? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 01, 2024 04:33 PM (omVj0) 33

And the whole cat issue with Greys, Galgos and other sighthounds-as NR Pax noted, it is very dog dependent. I have cats who are more timid and afraid of dogs, so I tend toward ultra cautious, and keep the cats separated if dogs are in residence.

The comments are Wokester Horror but the posts themselves are often pretty cool. Wolfus--
I have used calendula for allergic reactions on dogs. You can use a cream on skin eruptions. I use drops that I put in our dog's food because she seems to have some kind of undefined airborne allergy. Seems to work well. I don't know how well it works for cats, but I do know some people have used calendula successfully with them. Posted by: Art Rondelet of Malmsey at June 01, 2024 05:04 PM (FEVMW) 52

Wolfus, you are retiring and/or moving, there is this whole business with Miss Linda, there is this whole stress thing going on. Your cat is picking up on it.
