Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Sunday Overnight Open Thread (5/26/24)I wonder if CBD feels put out that KT & I are zeroing in on the food thread. Well, it's Memorial Day Weekend, and your last Saturday ONT featured Beef Fizz, which only Muldoon seemed to find attractive. Anyway, this started a discussion of corporate recipes, including Green Jello Salad, sometimes including cottage cheese. I actually invented one such recipe to substitute for one containing mayonnaise, evaporated milk and more walnuts than you would expect, when my FIL was in a rehab center and was being really grumpy about eating. It only has 3 or 4 ingredients, plus water, so I could calculate the nutrition profile for the rehab center dieticians, who are already familiar with Jello and cottage cheese. People seem to like it with sour cream on top. Not keto, but contains more protein than most desserts and it is gluten-free. It might keep your diabetic Aunt Meg from pigging out on the triple fudge cake. Enjoy. KT Lotsa Cottage Cheese and Pineapple Green Jello Salad(Update from KT: I took out the duplicate recipe that I sent to Mis. Hum. It's the same recipe, just formatted differently. The corporate food recipe above is really better with both lemon and lime Jello.) But why Mis. Hum? ...........Because. Stupidity should hurt. So should winning a Genius Award Winner. CAMPBELL, Calif. - A 25-year-old Campbell man was arrested on two counts of elder abuse for incidents that happened this month, police say. On May 4, Nicholas Hosteter allegedly punched a man in the stomach on San Tomas Aquino Road. He quickly took off, but then paused for a casual photo taken by his victim. In the photo, he's seen wearing headphones and a blue sweater. He continued to run away, leading Campbell police to put out an alert where they sought his identity Notice: Posted with permission by the Ace Media Empire & AceCorp, LLC. White will be acceptable office wear beginning soon. Until then, hold off. Memorial Day Weekend, no shirts, no pants, no socks, no lingerie, no problem. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Trump knew he was going into a tough room, stayed on message and gave both some serious concessions and some serious burns, while the LP delegates were incredibly worked up with both serious boos and serious cheers RFK Jr gave an academic lecture on the constitution, vague promises, and got golf-claps for the most part. As a preteen/teen in the mid-60s to early 70s in the upper Plains States I was served so many Jell-O mold desserts and salads I can't remember them all. I don't remember gagging on any. They were a novelty food item at that time in that place. My parents, aunts, grandparents, and great-aunts and I didn't know any better. If a concoction was in a new cookbook, in a TV or magazine ad, or on the back of a Jell-O box, we expected it was good stuff! Not to mention Jell-O was cheap and a way to economically fill the bellies of kids and everyone else.
The one Jell-O mold thing I had the most as I recall was a can of fruit cocktail suspended in every available Jell-O flavor. I became very tired of that one. Posted by: Gref at May 26, 2024 10:43 PM (5fDan) 97

Libertarians have the exact same defect that commies do, being opposite sides of the same coin.
Libertarians believe that Man is "perfectible" if only govt. would leave him alone and let him deal with his neighbors as an unfettered, Free Man. Commies believe that Man is "perfectible", if only govt. gets involved and controls every aspect of the man's life, from birth, education, employment, reading, thought, word and deed. Where are they both wrong? That Man is in any way "perfectible", other than Salvation though renewal in Christ. Libertarians' religion is Humanism. Commies' religion is Atheism. Both, of course, are, and shall forever remain, incorrect. Our Founding Fathers, even the not particularly "religious" ones, understood this, and leaned heavily ON religion, specifically Christianity with it'd Jewish roots and precepts, in their understanding of Man, his frailties and vanities and weaknesses, and designed the most perfect system of checks and balances to protect We the People from Them the Government, ever set down on parchment. They only want us to think that they're the majority. They're not, they're wrong, and they lie. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at May 26, 2024 10:53 PM (e6UQI) 130

...Jim, this is true of some LP, and also the problem with some Christians who think full adherence to scripture will solve all problems.
However, I think the term you are searching for is "spontaneous order" and there is a lot of writing about it by fairly serious people, not stupid dreamers who think the world is not filled with bears and starvation, and also don't believe that people can learn to not be people if they apply themselves. Posted by: Kindltot at May 26, 2024 11:01 PM (D7oie) That's an argument that resides on the edge of that coin, and it's disingenuous, as follows: 1. Spontaneous Order REQUIRES folks from the right side of the I.Q. and Self Discipline spread, in order to work. Community of ex .mil? Spontaneous Order, yeah. 2. Folks from the Low Q., Tribalism and Feral Survivalism "other end" of the Self Discipline spread, will DESTROY those in the Spontaneous Order Camp, every time. 3. We USED to keep #2 out, by means of strong, effective borders and immigration enforcement. Abandoning those, FJB has made the fight, not an "if", but a "when". Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice Yep, La Llorona is definitely a dangerous spirit with a tie to bodies of water, but what she does varies according to different regions of Mexico, Central, and South America. The most common account is that she drowned her own children to win the heart of a callous man who didn't want to be saddled with kids, and she is doomed to wander for eternity sobbing and searching for her lost little ones. It's sometimes said that just hearing her wails means death and disaster, while others have her dragging the unwary to a watery death, after the mode of sirens. Question about the lead photo: the sticks of the bundle of flags held by the soldier in the center are dirt-stained on the pointy end. So was the photo taken during the removal of the flags after some period of display expired, or was it taken when the flags were being set out, and flags were from previous years?

Jim, spontaneous order appears when groups of people have to figure things out on their own.
Decent functioning spontaneous order requires some background in how a group gets along, and either a commitment to some sort of fairness, or working out some sort of way to correct individuals that decide to steal The difference between a tiny village in Papua New Guinea and the Apple corporation is the cultural tools used to get groups of people to work for a common goal as a way to satisfy their needs, not that one group has no masters, and the other has masters all over the place on their necks all the time Posted by: Kindltot at May 26, 2024 11:56 PM (D7oie) 275

Even in the most pacifistic "seeming" societies, what appears as Spontaneous Order is pretty much always the result of one faction having won out over the other.
And most often, those conflicts were decided long ago, by bloodshed and mortal combat. Just 'cause the Tropic Islanders may seem all Tahitian and mellow now, doesn't mean that their history was any different from the mean of Human History as a whole. IOW, they fought their way to Pacifism, and won. And they'll enforce that Pacifism with extreme prejudice, too, if required. Just ask any cruising sailor who has tried to stay longer than a mere reprovision in a Tahitian port, sans the correct Visa, paperwork, and proof of self-sufficient funds as verified by their bank in any given nation. Tahiti's Coast Guard WILL tow that sailor aboard his boat, out to sea, and give him his new course heading, with orders to never return. If there is an attempt to change it for something the power brokers like better, well, there better be a lot of power at hand, and a lot of unintended things are going to happen since things are being done out of order. Look, have you ever tried to get a Mexican construction crew to do something they didn't want to do? Posted by: Kindltot There does seem to be some definite overlaps. Indo-European origins could account for some of that, but it doesn't account for those myths and folktales outside of that ethno-linguistic grouping - like the universality of accounts of a great world-altering flood that is survived only by a fortunate few. Alan Dundes did some great work on possible origins of folklore well-worth reading, although Jan Brunvand has severely critiqued his methodology. The Cadillac was the better made car. The Continental was absolutely the masterpiece of style.
But the Chrysler Imperial was the Lord of Excess in it's time. The specs didn't list "curb weight", but instead, it's Displacement in Tonnage. On one level Beauty and the Beast is a retelling of the Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche. But it is also the story of Petrus Gonsalvus, born in 1537 with a genetic condition causing his entire body to be covered with long hair. This brought him as a youth to the attention of Henry II of France, who made him a court favorite, educated him, and found out he was highly intelligent. Henry arranged a marriage between Petrus and one of the ladies of his court, who fainted at the sight of him. But she came to love him and they had many children, some of which inherited their fathers condition.

But, the only thing that Tex should see of them from here out, is CGI/AI video, of each kid being killed in the same manner he killed for Manson, and worse. The CGI/AI of the kids being flayed, disemboweled, hanged, drawn, quartered. And new variations on the cruelties played in his cell, each and every week, forever. My brief window of lucidity, which I mostly spent asking JT about his birdbath, has passed. Goodnight, All:

Posted by: John Drake Nearing the Caspian Sea at May 27, 2024 03:10 AM (u/Zei) I tend to think a lot of Oz' critters will kill you. I mean, a dingo really did eat the baby? According to reaction videos of US animals/nature by non-US types, the opinion seems to be that our animals can kill us, too, even non-predator or non-venomous critters like elk and moose, even a decent-sized buck in rut. The alligators, though, get 'em every time, except those Aussies since salties are a helluva lot more deadly than alligators. As for snakes, they have two species of taipan and the eastern brown, more than equal to our four venomous snakes, and there's a few more Down Under I didn't list. That doesn't include insects, spiders and the like. So, yeah, a whole bunch of critters want to kill you Down Under. Watching this Aussie-heavy content is getting to me - I've developed a sudden urge to sing "Waltzing Matilda" and to read the other "Bush Ballads" of Andrew "Banjo" Patterson. I'm checking to see if "The Man From Snowy River" is in my blu-ray collection. I'm suddenly wearing a bushranger slouch hat with one of the brims pinned and getting misty-eyed about the Great Emu War. i ... I have become a...oh God...were Aussie! Ned Kelly was misundetstood! Transportation was a barbarous Pomme practice. Don't watch NCIS Sydney - it's too late for me, but you still have hope! I..I'm driving on the left side of the road and Paul Hogan is in the passenger side suggesting we hunt sea crocs! Avenge me!

My high school class keeps an active FB page to advertise for reunions (we are in the post-50th anniversary phase now) as well as to let us know the sad news about classmates who have moved on. There was such a notice for Mary K the other day. She was someone with whom I had been in school since kindergarten. I knew her by sight, but I cannot recall ever having engaged in prolonged conversation with her. In high school, some form of cancer caused her to lose a leg and she walked with crutches clear up through our graduation ceremony. Her life after high school sounded mundane, according to her obituary, until she came back home to care for her dying father. Then she blossomed, after a fashion. She became a favorite aunt for her siblings' children and in the best of ways -- taking them on excursions, and so forth. It was mentioned that she in effect raised two of her nieces or nephews as well as two of her grandnieces or grandnephews. She had an open and generous heart that belied the lifelong consequences of her having had cancer. She sounded extraordinary. I regret not knowing that she had lived in our hometown for at least two decades -- I would have liked to meet her again. Two things for today. The first is a continuation of the Australia conversation. This is a what I would say is a very fine pro-military, not necessarily pro-war, song from Australia. Beccy Cole, from 2005, 'Poster Girl (Wrong Side of the World)'. I somehow heard it when it came out and I loved it, even bought it. To me it's very softly moving. And a beautiful voice. YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/bdfs9m89 This is a bit more lighthearted. When you watch this short 12-second video, you see just about everything for which the men we honor today have given everything. I'm not trying to be rudely humorous. But 12 seconds says a lot. 'X': https://tinyurl.com/2h59vp6c Posted by: RickZ at May 27, 2024 04:15 AM (emlEe) 470
