The Classical Saturday Morning Coffee Break & Prayer Revival

52424coffee.jpg

*****

Good morning Horde. It's the start of the summer season. For those of you who prayed for a positive surgery and outcome, "Thank you". This is the first thread of mine since surgery where I sat at the Kitchen table to draft it. This past week's threads were written in bed with my leg propped and iced accordingly. I'm feeling better.

Once again today's Mystery Click was suggested by Hadrian the Seventh. Thanks H7th.

Let us clean up some other housekeeping matters. (Rulz for those of you in Viola, WI)

1) This is and probably will always be an open thread. Feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate away the morning.
2) Be nice to one another even the trolls. We have ways to deal with them.
3) Think about the ER wait time before you run with sharp objects.
4) Have a great weekend!
5) Don't forget to give Annie a big shout out for her work to compile our prayer list week in and week out. Thank you Annie.

*****

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:

3/9 – Hadrian the Seventh asked for prayers for Her Majesty, who is having knee replacement surgery. He’d like prayers for a successful operation, but also an uneventful recovery. Her previous surgery in 2019 (on the other knee) was marked by great pain and the effect of the medication was terrible.
5/8 Update – Her Majesty had to go to the hospital again. Her incision from her knee replacement became infected. They had to open it up again, clean it out, and sew it back up again. Her medical vicissitudes with her knee and eye have made her depressed. She is home again now, and looks a good deal better than when she went in.

4/18 – Misanthropic Humanitarian asked for prayers, as he will be having his right knee replacement surgery on 5/6/24.
5/6 Update – Misanthropic Humanitarian sends his thanks for all the prayers and good wishes. He is home now.

4/27 – JW asked for prayers for Libby, who has a glioblastoma tumor that affects her word choices, so communication is very difficult. Libby has had surgery, radiation, and chemo, but is worse in the 4 weeks since treatment ended.
5/13 Update – The MRI showed that her tumor started growing aggressively as soon as the treatment stopped, plus she has 2 new inch-sized tumors near the treatment area. She is almost completely unable to communicate and feels very alone because of that. Her prognosis has changed from 18 months to maybe 4. Thank you to all who are praying for this total stranger.

5/2 – A Dude in MI requested prayers for dude Jr who is having a rough situation at school. Please pray for a quick resolution and no lasting effects.

5/4 – Sock Monkey requested prayers for a SIL who is interviewing with the Republican county leaders, for the interim position of County Attorney. He’s not necessarily a Trump supporter, but he is definitely qualified for the job and has the values that mesh.

5/4 – Paul requested prayers for the families of the toddlers bombed in Gaza.

5/8 – Fenelon Spoke asked for prayers for the young people graduating from college this weekend and beyond – that the graduation ceremonies might be peaceful, and that the young people going on to internships and jobs and looking for jobs might have a future with hope. Also for peace on college and university campuses.

5/11 – Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd sent thanks for the prayers for his daughter and grandchildren, at the death of the children’s father. The family began tackling the financial side of the situation last week, and learned that because of various programs, his ex-son-in-law will provide support for his children in death that he never was likely to do in life, which is a blessing. This in turn opens a path forward for Lloyd’s daughter and her children to have a place of their own.

5/11 – Tonypete asked for prayers for #4 son. 5/11 was his wedding day, and he asked R. to stand with him. She isn’t his birth mom but raised him after T. died.

5/11 – Taq, rickrolled by Jesus sent thanks to the Horde for praying for his mother the last couple of months. Her fractured hip has healed and she is walking, albeit slowly and with a cane, again. He has made several modifications to the house to make it suitable for her. She spent a month in a nursing home, one of the better ones in the community. Taq and his father spent 12 hours a day there, and half the nurses were kind and full of compassion and half were slow, lazy factory workers who seemed to resent the residents. They also resented Taq and his dad being in their workspace. Taq is grateful that God brought him here, because if he hadn’t ended up in a hospital in 2019 from alcohol, he wouldn’t be here taking care of his folks.

5/11 – Jewells said the chemo break doesn’t seem to be helping. The swelling in her feet and legs is terrible, and they don’t have an answer. When she goes back on 6/11, if the doctor doesn’t have any other options, she is considering stopping treatment.
5/11 Update – Jewells is feeling much better now that a liter of fluid has been removed from around her lungs.

5/11 – RedMindBlueState asked for prayers for a friend since age 5, who just lost her husband suddenly. Prayer for her and for her boys are appreciated.

5/11 – Mollo, lurker requested prayers for a 7-year-old named Eli who suffered a stroke. Right now he can’t talk and the right side of his body isn’t working. Pray for healing for Eli and strength for his family.

5/11 – J asked for prayers for his wife, who has been experiencing debilitating migraines for years. J prays for her. The kids pray for her. The doctors have done what they think they can do within what they know to do. Maybe she needs prayer more than anything? (Is there any doubt?)

5/14 – Nearsider has a job! This afternoon, Nearsider received and accepted an offer to work as a federal contractor. He will begin on 6/3, and will make approximately 80% of his previous salary. Thank you for all the prayers, concerns, well-wishes, and reach0outs. A very particular thank you to those of you who have hired me to build model aircraft for you – they’re all still going to get done, I promise.

5/14 – DaveT sent an update. We have been praying for the lawsuits related to his home (that a relative took loans out against) and his elderly cats. He has a GiveSendGo set up to help with the costs; please contact Annie for that information. He sends his thanks for the prayers.

5/15 – PabloD requested prayers for Nick. Nick was going to commit suicide, but called a help line and received care. Prayers for strength for him and support from his family are still needed.

5/17 – Grumpy and Recalcitrant asked for prayers for J.J. Sefton of the Morning Report. Please pray that his upcoming surgery and recovery would go very well and that he retains full mental and physical function, and can enjoy the rest of his life without worries.
5/22 Update – J.J. is out of surgery. They think they got the entire tumor!

5/18 – P asked for prayers for his brother, who just revealed that he is suffering from stage 4 lung cancer that has spread to his lymph nodes. The outlook is not good. P prays that he remembers God is with him, notwithstanding his diagnosis.

5/18 – Dash my lace wings! asked for prayers for D, who is in ICU due to a heart attack, and for her husband, R, who is a veteran and a lover of cats and bad jokes, who will be lost if he loses her.

5/18 – Tonypete requested prayers for Carole across the street. She is a delightful 80 year old. Previously she was in great shape, very active. A few weeks ago she took ill and turned out to have previously undiagnosed heart troubles. They hurriedly replaced a valve but it didn’t go well. She continues to leak blood and now needs open heart surgery. She is tiny – no more than 90 pounds - and they fear she will not survive.

5/18 – Screaming in digital will be taking a trip to England. She would like prayers for her mom while she’s gone, and blessings for her sweet cousin who will be looking after mom, and her awesome neighbors who will be taking care of her cat and keeping an eye on the house.

5/20 – Sponge requested prayers for Lady, who had a mammogram this week and they found a mass. She has a biopsy scheduled soon, but won’t know the results until early June. She’s taking it well but is quite nervous, as to be expected. Please put her in your prayers for a clean bill of health.

5/22 – Vmom stabby stabby stabby stabby asked for prayers. She has been in the hospital since Monday with sudden dizziness and emesis. They’ve ruled out stroke. They have noticed nystagmus and it might be BPPV. She is scared she won’t be able to function anymore.

5/23 – Olddog could use some prayers. He is going in for surgery again at 10 am. Squamous cell carcinoma under the tongue. It is not a good location due to the proximity to a salivary gland.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

For those on the Prayer List

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me.

23 Good morning! Amidst the growing madness of the world, let us keep in mind that God is moving among us. A few tidbits to amuse and encourage you.

I'm sure I'm not alone in wondering what is going on in the Vatican. "Is the pope Catholic?" is not the rhetorical question it used to be, but for this past week, the answer was "yes."

If you haven't seen Pope Francis' dismissive response to female ordination, check it out. He immediately realizes the point of the question, gets visibly bored with the set-up and when he finally gets a chance to respond, leans forward and offers a firm "NO." German Synod hardest hit.

Similarly, when asked if Fiducia supplicans permits the blessing of homosexual relationships, he completely rejected it, affirming that none of the teachings have changed, one can't bless sin, but that everyone can receive a blessing individually. So while not withdrawn, Fiducia supplicans is dead.

And then, just to make sure the rubble bounced, the author if FS, Cardinal Fernandez, was dispatched to Egypt to apologize to the Copts about any confusion. The Vatican released a quote from him stating that Church posiition on homosexuality has not and cannot change.

I don't think so but it was a dark day for the USA. I was too angry to cry.

33 Fernandez, some will recall, said that he personally disliked the official description of homosexual behavior as "intrinsically disordered," so having that statement attributed to him was probably extra painful.

And the choice of sending him was also deliberate. The Copts had been moving ever closer to Rome, and healing a schism dating from AD 451 would be a massive boost to Francis' legacy. FS (which Francis may not have even read before it was released) completely derailed that. So it appears we're in "Clean up that mess you made, Tuco," mode.

38 There's a lot of pessimism about population decrease, loss of faith, etc., but it's interesting that the latest demographic polling indicates that the "nones" (people with no religious affiliation) may have peaked and are starting to decline.

This aligns with record levels of adult baptisms in many dioceses over Easter. The siren song of materialism is wearing thing - particularly when you have rampant inflation and a crumbling economy.

The completely disproportionate response to a football player's commencement speech at a school that most people never heard of and couldn't find even with a Google search shows you how afraid the Enemy's minions are right now. Feminism promised women absolute freedom, and instead they find themselves single and worried about men in dresses swinging their dicks in their bathrooms and taking their athletic scholarships.

This aligns with record levels of adult baptisms in many dioceses over Easter. The siren song of materialism is wearing thing - particularly when you have rampant inflation and a crumbling economy.

Yes, when times get hard people return to Jesus. This world of sin has many tribulations and sorrows. The next world, when we return to the Father and Son, will be better. Fashionable disbelief or neglect of belief will fade in these times, and old teachings and behaviors long neglected will make themselves known again.

The Spirit of the Age is all about credentials. Advanced degrees, visiting exotic places - saying you scaled the highest peak is just another box to check.

Doing the work of raising a family, teaching them faith - these are boring and lame. No one's going to applaud you unless you brainwash your kids into chemically castrating themselves.

My role model for life was my paternal grandfather, a quiet, unremarkable man who started as a machinist, became a teacher, learned carpentry and retired from GW to drive an Airstream and volunteer at the local elementary school. And when he died, the church was PACKED, because of the lives he had touched.

138 As you all know the Catholic Church has struggled to ordain new priests, our diocese has been blessed with a starting class of 15. One will enter the deaconate next week and then full priesthood when ready. I just found out that of my husband's 7 siblings only 3 attend Mass regularly, this includes hubby. His parents were faithful to the church, especially his father, his mom had no problem with abortion and that's a long story. One sister and BIL stopped because priests are too conservative and they want pro choice. Our church has a pastor who is extremely conservative, we love it and the diocese is ordaining priests who are conservative. If this is a trend nationwide other Catholics will leave the church and that is a shame. My hope is that those with no religious affiliation or who belong to other faiths who abhor what theirs have become will convert. I believe this will take a fair amount of time.

Israeli Foreign Ministry makes ambassadors of Ireland, Norway and Spain watch the harrowing video of the kidnapping of five Israeli teenage girls.

The ambassadors were invited by Israel’s Foreign Minister to have “severe reprimand conversations” after their countries announced they would officially recognize Palestine as a state.

In the 3 minute video, the ambassadors saw the kidnappings of Liri Albag, Karina Ariev, Agam Berger, Daniela Gilboa and Naama Levy as they were abducted from the Nahal Oz base.

There has been a big increase in vocations, and our diocese ordained two priests this year, with seven more due next year. We went from a dozen seminarians at any given time to 30. We've also gone from closing convents to opening new ones.

But there has also been an overall drop in some areas because "cultural Catholics" - like Biden and Pelosi - aren't bothering any more. My mother was one of 5 children raised in the Church, only one of whom still attends Mass. Yet the grandchildren have returned and almost all of the great-grandchidren attend Mass.

Our parish went through a profound shift as Covid hit, with contributions dropping sharply as old people quit because of the return to orthodoxy, the removal of hippie decorations and the restoration of icons, getting the bongos out of the sanctuary, etc. But the young people are much more engaged and fervent.

Simply stated, what is it you hope to accomplish by turning it over to an outside group or Adult Protective Services? What is your goal?

Exceptions would include if they are posing a threat to someone else (e.g. driving dangerously).

225 Morning all. I heard from my friend Pastor Joe, the one who had the brain surgery in Feb. Yesterday he had his 3 month post surgical MRI. Apparently his doctor was suspecting something, because he viewed the MRI and called Joe before he even got home.
There is something suspicious on the MRI and he has to go this Wednesday to have more tests and to see the doctor.
I asked him how he felt about this, and here's his answer -
"' In the words of King David, May I dwell in the house of the Lord forever'"

Please pray for him and his family. Thank you.

Secular materialists think only of this world, and that's why they resort to bullying because they know it would work on them. If you threatened even the mildest violence, all the super-atheists would "say the words" and then laugh because they didn't mean them and you're done.

They find people of faith frankly terrifying because it raises the awful possibility that there is a God and an afterlife. It also exposes their own cowardice, which is intolerable.

Unfortunately, dysfunctional families are becoming the norm, and what I would suggest is, for ALL of us, wherever we find it, if you have the opportunity to be the mentor, the loving substitute, the inspiration for a kid who doesn't get it from home, be that. Do what you can. Plant seeds,

Many have risen out of dysfunctional families because there was someone... all it takes sometimes is one, who inspired them to rise out of it.

268 Going back waaay upthread to my updates on Pope Francis, the important thing to understand right now is that the left knows that all their supposed gains hang by a thread. Their victories were based on lies backed by other lies and sustained by more lies and it doesn't take much for the whole thing to crash down.

They also know how they've acted when they had power, so they know what they will face should the wheel turn.

It's kind of like "Pride Month" writ large: if you shout that a sin isn't sinful loud enough, you think you can drown out that tiny voice telling you it's deeply wrong. That voice never really goes away, which is why they constantly have to talk about it, affirm it, and demand you affirm it.

For a long time, people humored them, but that's ending, and it terrifies them.

The border thing is tricky because right now there are no good answers. You have people in need. They shouldn't be here, but they are because the government is inviting them.

So do you let them starve, or aid them? Yes, there is also some hinky back-channel stuff where Catholic Charities are living high off the hog on this thing, but in terms of individual people, suffering people, that is a need.

Now the issue is that the government has no plan, it has created this crisis, and violated the law in the process. So Caesar's not doing his job. That's the root of the problem.

292 I have seen Catholic discussions on how borders are both man-made, but God has permitted them and they preserve order. God created nations for a reason, so maintaining them is consistent with the faith.

But again, the issue is that rather than have a vote, we have people just refusing to fulfill their oaths to enforce the law.

Soon to be a national holiday. I already practice my commemorating, by finding someone dying of a fentanyl overdose and kneeling on his neck.

It's not hard to do, people, you just have to step over a few homeless people who are NOT currently overdosing on fentanyl. But there aren't that many of those.

300 Thanks Ace-Endorsed. Good way to view it. Hope that Catholic Charities can handle the cash burden, many churches cannot help. Some struggle to keep their lights on and candles on the altar.
In our church volunteers keep things going with our aging infrastructure. We are doing ok and just raised the needed cash and pledges to expand and improve our outdated church. For us I believe it was the influx of refugees from CA, AZ, OR and WA that saw the needed and supported the improvements.

302 What's all this fuss about boarders? Boarders can provide a source of income for elderly folks who have a spare room. And it provides someone a place to stay for a short period of time without having to sign a lease. There's usually a nice home cooked meal involved, too. My grandmother had boarders in her house for years. Usually really nice folks and she appreciated the company.
What? Oh. Never mind...

The problem is it is not people in need. It was people in need when the border patrol was actually able to do their job and separate the ones in need from the leeches, criminals and terrorists. The majority now just want free benefits and the opportunity to steal the American dream from the people who are actually working to earn it.
The people actually in need are being harassed, raped and stolen from as they are the most vulnerable.
The NGOs and Chruches and Synagogues should be the first to support the way the old system worked not lining their pockets on the new illegal system.

We can feel bad for the criminals, and we can pray for criminals, but they're still criminals. Those criminals are hurting innocents.

I want to make criminals stop hurting innocents, and I think that's not only an honorable pursuit but the Christian thing to work towards. '

Enabling criminals to continue hurting innocents is not.

That goes back to the government. That's who has the spigot, and when these people are literally dumped on communities, one can't just let them starve in the streets.

I think the tide has somewhat turned from when Trump was president and people were belting out prayers for the kids in cages. It's now clear that we cannot just import the world - or its cartels.

I was, too.

From "defend the weak" to "defend the rights of the poor and needy", I reject the criminals and will protect the innocents from them all I can. We are called to do that.

The criminals damage families, schools, incomes, etc. I reject them and want to protect the innocent.

I feel for the criminals, similar to the way I pitied George Floyd and Harvey Milk. I refuse to enable them.

It's interesting how similarly it ties to abortion now that I think about it.

That's a good theological point - the Church teaches that we are to judge actions by their fruit rather than their intentions.

First off, they aren't nuns. Nuns are cloistered.

They are sisters who are no longer affiliated with the college. It's a sad attempt to grab attention and maybe some leftist donations. Note that they do not wear habits, so these are one of the dying 1970s-era organizations.

379 There was a certain old woman who lived near our cabin, at 8,600 ft elevation in the Sangre de Cristo mtns. She was widowed, a retired NYC school teacher who had lived there for 30 years. We first met her in her 70's and she died at 91. In her later years she would park her car at the highway gate and hike the half mile to her cabin when the snow was too deep to drive. She would drive to town about once a week, going a cautious 40-45 mph on the highway. She was garrulous and eccentric but did not have debilitating dementia per se. Some of our neighbors conspired to steal her car keys and hide them from her. They insisted that she move into town to an apartment for the winter, and went so far as to arrange a place. She steadfastly refused and continued to live at her longtime home in the hills. She was found dead on her couch at home one morning by the oxygen delivery guy. This was her long-stated desire.

She died on her own terms and we respect her for that.

383 And I'm glad you think it is easy to shorten URLs on a phone.
Posted by: Notsothoreau at May 25, 2024 11:17 AM (yeEu9)

Phone user here. I keep TinyURL in my favorites. When I want to link a story I copy the address, tap on over to TinyURL, grab the shortened url there and bounce back here and VIOLA!

Super easy, barely an inconvenience.

A little practice and all your linkenings will go super smooth.

Eat your feelings, Sonia. Glazed donuts are your friend. Be happy to send a few boxes of fresh Krispy Kremes your way. Daily.

388 224 Prayers requested for our grandson. Kid is probably not going to graduate from high school due to poor grades. He'll be here for about a month before going to summer school to make up for the deficiencies.

Or not. He'll be at a non-woke YMCA camp for 3 weeks so his perspective might change.

He's not stupid. Just not interested in school. Bleak future awaits. His family is (to put it nicely) "dysfunctional."

Sounds like me. I hated HS and just did not care.
