Wednesday Morning Rant

mannixape2.jpg

No Such Thing as Magic

Yesterday, news came out that a once-great, once-untouchable movie studio that spent most of its history churning out mega-hit cultural touchstones has finally been forced to begin its inevitable retrenching. Though it will likely prove to be an inadequate and ineffective attempt to stop the decline, Disney announced large-scale layoffs in its Pixar division.

Disney's 2006 acquisition of Pixar was a vision of things to come. It was the start of Bob Iger's acquisition spree that saw Disney take over major studios and media companies for the next decade. For a while, Disney was content to let the bees keep buzzing about and make honey. Along with the rest of the company, however, this changed by the middle of the last decade. Disney was no longer content to let the hive hum along because it had something too valuable for other purposes: its brand.

Disney's mission became not to produce movies, but to create and distribute propaganda. The problem with propaganda is that it largely sucks and there's little market for it. To make sales, you have to rook the audience into thinking it's something it isn't. Sometimes this is unsuccessful and nothing can drive demand, but sometimes the lie works. You tell your customers they're buying X because that's what it's always been, but then you sell them Y instead and laugh all the way to the bank.

The deceit play can work by riding reputation, but that has a limited shelf life. Reducing quality while stamping an illustrious name on the product can let you coast for a bit, but eventually this peters out and then your magic symbol - your laboriously and painstakingly developed brand name and reputation - becomes a symbol of disgust. Just ask the foreign owners of the RCA, Westinghouse, Sunbeam and other once-great names in the consumer goods market how long the name will still be synonymous with quality if you pump out indifferent sludge instead of good products. You can still find trash with those names haphazardly glued onto it, but those names are now just an artifact - an echo of an age before they were reduced to irrelevance.

And so it is with Pixar, Marvel, 20th Century Fox, Disney itself, AB-InBev, Gillette and so on. One could spend all day listing brands that decided to ride the coattails of their own success right over the cultural cliff. The magic symbols they possessed - their all-powerful, semi-mythical, utterly invulnerable brands - were not magic at all. The big brains of board room and ad agency inverted causality. The brands were great because the products were great. A great brand can not elevate a bad product, but a bad product can certainly demean and devalue the brand. The bigger the brand - and the grander the reputation - the more damage is caused by this inversion. Eventually, even a great brand will elicit not admiration or confidence, but indifference or contempt.

The 14% reduction in staff at Pixar is just a down payment on the bill for damage wrought by an idiot elite with the cargo-cult mentality of savages who believed their brands and the accomplishments of their forebears gave them the magic power to dictate terms.

28 Haven't watched anything created by disney in decades. Did take a walk on the wild side with a Paramount/CBS streaming production of Star Trek/Strange New Worlds. The strange new worlds must refer to the pussification of everything from the original series. Captain Pike is a caring, sensitive, new age man who is a gourmet cook. He talks incessantly and comes up with gobbledy gook answers to their dangerous situations. The crew is full of kick ass womenz. Don't get me started on the actors they hire, who it appears are hired based on their sexual peccadillos. One episode was directed by a trans and the main villain was a trans female. Uhuru's actress was bisexual and now claims she's gray sexual. Jeebus.

How? Let's assume pre-COVID, so January of '20.
The price of oil then was about $60 per barrel.
The price of oil now is about $78 per barrel.
Domestic oil consumption is about 20 million barrels per day.

To move the market like that would cost either $360 million per day (about $11 billion per month) or require an increase in production by at least a third.

TV, books, video games, table top rpgs, comics: they're all on the LGBT+ propaganda train. Regardless of what happens to Disney, my sense is that this battle is lost. The propagandists won.

The change isn't by shifting from one institution to another, it's accelerating the shift from centralized entertainment to decentralized.

Mr. Beast is one of the most highly paid celebrities in the world, and he started at 13 making Youtube videos. Still does.

Of course, that's still reliant on a centralized platform, but the creation is diffuse.

Lucas did it to preserve the PG rating. Resubmitting the first film to the MPAA with Han shooting first might have gotten it a PG-13.

Not really. A lot of wokeness has been propped up with borrowed money and as that shrivels in the harshness of either formal default or inflating the debt away, much of what the elite class worries about will become trivial.

Essentially almost everywhere the centralization trend that has lasted the past two centuries or so is dying whether culture, music, politics, etc.

Yet, in a forest dying around them, some will always point to the tallest trees surviving and assume that is the norm.

My personal guess is that Big Music, Big Movies, Big Government, Big Media, Big Political Parties, Big Retail, etc are all becoming to complex and expensive to live onwards.

We are rushing toward some reset of massive proportions--the question is exactly how violent it will be until a new equilibrium is reached.

134 MSNBC, Team Trump rages over biopic depicting him committing sexual assault
The Trump campaign is crying "election interference" over a biopic screened at the Cannes Film Festival that depicts a character playing Trump raping a character playing his ex-wife Ivana Trump.

May 21, 2024, 3:26 PM EDT
By Ja'han Jones

Donald Trump is the talk of the Cannes Film Festival, although not for positive reasons.

"After its screening at Cannes on Monday, filmmaker Ali Abbasi’s movie “The Apprentice” has the cinema community buzzing and the Trump campaign fuming. The biopic focuses on the relationship between Trump and his now-deceased former lawyer Roy Cohn. Cohn’s character is played by Jeremy Strong, who starred as Kendall Roy in “Succession,” and Trump’s character is played by Sebastian Stan, who previously appeared in Marvel's “Avengers” franchise and once starred as rocker Tommy Lee in a biopic about Lee and model Pamela Anderson.

Among the aspects that have the MAGA camp up in arms is the inclusion of a scene in which the Trump character sexually assaults a character playing Trump’s then-wife, Ivana Trump."

140 Biden Can’t Blow the Debates. They may be his only chances to change people’s minds. MONA CHAREN

Trump and his allies have oversold the Biden-is-senile message. Many voters have come to think he is not just old, but drooling and unable to function. The truth is that, though his voice is getting croaky, he messes up words and names sometimes, and he walks quite stiffly, he is very much compos mentis. He has demonstrated this repeatedly; as when he traveled to Kyiv, or Jerusalem, or delivered his State of the Union message complete with unscripted moments. Biden was so sharp at the SOTU, Trump accused him of being drugged.

...Biden also needs a better answer on immigration. Pointing to the GOP’s cynical torpedoing of the immigration bill is one talking point. Even if it’s too late to convince voters that he sees the problem through the same lens they do, he can at least convey through word and deed that he is open to stricter policies.

The majority of the American people have never liked Trump. Biden has given himself two opportunities to convince them that granting Trump another term, however tepid their feelings about the incumbent, would be a disaster.

All of which underscores Lasseter's philosophy that a good story needs to be believable, not realistic.

That philosophy is utterly incompatible with postmodern/critical theory notions that everything must be realistic (diversity, representation, etc.) but nothing should be believable.

PG-13 came about after / because of Temple of Doom (violence almost made it Rated R).

First movie to actually receive the rating was The Flamingo Kid, but it was released in theaters after Red Dawn.

152 I thoroughly expect a bicoastal push to eliminate foreign cultural products from the market. It won't be "censorship," of course, and will be done under the guise of trade policy to protect native industries, but the purpose will be to remove that choice (or make it extremely expensive).

The problem is that essentially it is the industries fighting a losing battle just as they did about music and video streaming. Even the Chinese who are pretty sophisticated at controlling internet traffic cannot stop the signal, nor the news, etc.

Our governing structures worldwide are simply buckling under the strain because increasing complexity renders determining 2nd, 3rd, and 4th order feedback effects impossible.

Already our Big Economic models are essentially producing junk results because they simply cannot handle the complexity of global trade, capital, and human movements. So everyone relies on static models and calls it a day.

Same as Color Revolutions don't build a stable society either as much as the CIA might want it to.

With tremendous action sequences too. The bit where the young son, Dash, learns he can run fast enough to travel on water, and the scene with Mrs. I flying the jet with her kids aboard as the rockets hurtle toward them, were the kind of gems you'd like to see in a live-action movie. It certainly hasn't lived up to the hype, but that's almost always the case. Except if Mr. Beast moved to Rumble or some other platform - or said COVID shots don't work or some other misinformation, I guess - he would be pulled from the platform and his income drop like a rock.

I don't know what the proper phrase is, but youtube is absolutely the brand. Not the brand that people are buying, but the brand that is burned onto the creators.

I think Tik Tok and Onlyfans are also making headway these days, too. But everyone on it is property of the platform. Maybe not legally or in a contract, but they know they'll crash if they move elsewhere.

It would be very interesting to know if Youtube pays Mr. Beast directly for his presence. I'm betting they do.

Real estate inventory is remarkably fluid, depending on the market dynamics at play. Lots of people at any given *could* move if they wanted to, but they won't if they don't see value. "I could sell, but then I'd have to buy something else, so why bother when I don't come out ahead."

At the same time, there are fairly few people who *must* sell for some reason - unemployment, divorce, relocation, etc. They are the margin, and the market moves there very fast. Even a modest increase in "must sell" can move inventory relatively quickly, and if that causes price to decline - and with as inflated as things, that's likely - "could sell, if value's there" inventory floods on to get while the getting's good.

Exactly. This has been a part of the Marxist left's Long March Through the Institutions. Institutions and corporations have not been committing suicide. The Marxist left has been infiltrating them and killing them from the inside.

Which is why I hate this attitude from the right for the past decade plus of just saying "good, let it die". That's not a conservative attitude. So much for wanting to conserve all the good things about America. When the Marxist left has taken all of them over and destroyed them the past couple decades, the response from the right has simply been "that's a shame... anyway..."

Depressing. And people wonder why more and more Americans are taking the same "that's a shame..." attitude about the Marxist left takeover and destruction of America as a whole.

I worked with a kid who had an abusive girlfriend. She really screwed him up and I doubt he'll recover, really ever.

Life is too short to put up with bad relationships.

Or is that relationshits.

210 At the same time, there are fairly few people who *must* sell for some reason - unemployment, divorce, relocation, etc. They are the margin, and the market moves there very fast. Even a modest increase in "must sell" can move inventory relatively quickly, and if that causes price to decline - and with as inflated as things, that's likely - "could sell, if value's there" inventory floods on to get while the getting's good.

281 How...do you fuck up Pixar? By the time Finding Nemo rolled around it was synonymous with good, wholesome entertainment. Whatever they made would be terrific. People would go to a new Pixar movie just because it was Pixar.

The downfall started with Cars 2. It was such an obvious cash grab. Guys like Brad Bird, John Lassiter, and Tom Doctor left. The list of story author grew longer and had more women. Same with the screenplays.

Disagree - her last output while heavily streamed had no siren song to keep people returning. There have been multiple comments from people into music that I occasionally read suggesting that her last attempt appeared hurried, with not alot of heart, in an attempt to capitalize on all the NFL publicity she was generating with the Chiefs.

I don't like much of her music, but there is a huge fangirl of hers in my family. She agreed - it wasn't a very good effort from Ms. Swift. Taylor is on the top of the world - we will see if she thinks she can coast, cause she is just very tired of the work it took to get here; or whether she thinks her marketing prowess is where it really is - and so she continually degrades her product because she has realized - probably correctly - she is the product, not the mediocre music she creates.

Good point. And at the end there was a nod to the fact that nature is resilient. That actually made a good conversation point with my kids. Certainly not countless skyscrapers of garbage that even billions of people couldn't have generated in the first place.

373 What's funny is that he *did.* He clearly read the intro, clicked through to the linked source, found the number, and then dropped a turd about it. But it's equally clear that he didn't read the entire post because it is literally in there - albeit as a relative figure rather than an absolute.

He knew the conclusion and approach before starting and was willing to put in the work to make his pre-determined shit post, but not to read enough of the original post to determine if it was applicable.

It's hilarious.

Yutes reading comprehension is in the toilet. Why Johnny Can't Read is a damning indictment by a former professor and that is several years old by now. You can find it on the Pope Center in North Carolina website. Pope is an interesting organization trying to reform higher education in NC and the US in general.

Essentially, the internet and endless trolling on cell phones etc have destroyed kid's ability to even absorb written text. Instead, it becomes all jumbled and random picking out facts that are important to the reader, not to the story.

The paid trolls do it for the money and don't give a crap about the response. Other unpaid trolls can be similar to stalker types due to some perceived grievance, some are simply pests that cannot absorb the fact they are unwanted assholes, and others are the sad layabouts that think trolling is 'changing the world' while munching on cheetoes in their parent's basement.

The stalker types cannot handle being abused by the folks here and eventually find another fixation. The pests are with us always and the change the world types by trolling end up dying from malnutrition from eating modern junk food by the cold light of their computer monitor.

388 Disney is an entertainment conglomerate that first and foremost needs to be broken up. The bought Fox and proceeded to do nothing with its catalog of movies. It can make mad money this way but it refuses to do so. (One example)

It would be better off spinning off ESPN, ABC, other channels, and other businesses. To my absolute horror apparently National Geographic falls under them now.

But no, it would most rather focus intensely on propagandizing THE MESSAGE and on buying up IPs it has either no intention of doing anything with or simply destroying them as it has, say, LucasFilm. Never mind.

How? It can’t be by doing things like liberalizing the oil production in this country. He can’t drain the SPR indefinitely. That leaves begging countries ruled by gangsters like Russia or by out and out evil like Venezuela and Iran.

40 Thing is, I don't really see other companies doing much different than Disney (except maybe being less vocal about what they are doing). But movies,
TV, books, video games, table top rpgs, comics: they're all on the LGBT+ propaganda train. Conservatives are always saying "get woke, go broke," but few seem to actually go broke, and the culture is so saturated with this propaganda that short of just abandoning all contemporary pursuits, it's more or less unavoidable. Regardless of what happens to Disney, my sense is that this battle is lost. The propagandists won.

393 70 Oh, and BBC
Bear in mind that I've been watching BBC stuff on PBS for decades.
Just saw Episode 1 of the latest iteration of "Great Expectations". In which:
Pip is a tweener, not a child
His sister is a dominatrix. Her client is the lawyer, who is Asian.
Estella is- you might want to sit down for this- black.
Miss Haversham is (I read some reviews later) an opium addict.
Self-absorbed youngsters ruining everything.
