With deep sorrow and regret, I have received the bitter news of the martyrdom of the people's President, the competent, hard-working Haj Sayyid Ebrahim Raisi, and his esteemed entourage.

Martyrdom?

Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian were confirmed dead overnight Monday, following a helicopter crash in the northwest region of the country. The discovery puts to rest, nearly 12 hours of uncertainty over the whereabouts and condition of the country's president. Though nominal in power to the Supreme Leader, the incident has led to the elevation of 1st Vice President Mohammad Mokhber as acting president ahead of fresh elections.

President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials were aboard the helicopter that crashed in a mountainous region of northwest Iran early Sunday morning.
The crash has forced Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to install interim leadership for Iran's executive branch.
An Israeli official denied any involvement in the crash, countering Iran's accusations given the ongoing conflict between the two nations.

You'd think, if the engine fails, a chopper would be done, but there's something called "autorotation" it does, which is equivalent to an airplane gliding. It's difficult, and you only get one chance, but it allows for a rough, but survivable, landing.

F-14 Tomcats. The Shah bought them back in the late 1970's. How they get spare parts for them is a real mystery.
The US Navy scrapped and crushed all the F-14's when they retired them, to prevent someone from using parts from them to sell to Iran, who is the only other country to operate the F-14.

I saw a video of that happening recently - in Hawaii I think. I think they disengage the rotor and let it spin freely which creates a little bit of lift right before crash.

The end of the video was a little unclear, but looked pretty damn rough.

239 More than 40 years ago, I worked as a mechanic's helper for a helicopter leasing company in the 4 Corners area of NM. The mechanics were meticulous about their work. I trusted them totally. It's pilots you have to watch out for.

This. I was a Huey and H-3 mechanic in the Marine Corps. Some pilots were good but most of the problems we had were due to F'ed up pilots.

Years ago there was an outfit at Pease AFB that did "Dream Flights". You would go up in a Robinson helicopter with a pilot. He would let you fly it. On RTB, he stopped at the runway so you could try your hand at hovering.

It was a cool flight. Went out over the Nubble Light House in York, ME.

Interesting side note - the Scooter A-4 Skyhawk did not have radar in its first integrations....so the Marines in Nam, like my dad, would all grease pencil in their shots on the canopy to keep track of their accuracy. You got the same aircraft over and over, of course, in your squadron. But take over a squadron that was leaving its aircraft, and you wanted the bird with the least pencil marks on the canopy - because that bird was accurate....

My Dads first year in Nam was a tour in 1965 (that were 1 year tours at the time) - the Marines A4's did not have radar capability - I know because later when I was an aviation supply officer, we had a reserve contingent of A-4s from that later year Skyhawk fly onboard the carrier and not a single one had FLR.

Later, the radar systems, while they did not seem to have solid shot tracking, which was a problem, they did have it for weather.
