114 WaPo: Arts & Entertainment Perspective
A tour de force of eroticism
John White Alexander painted “Repose” in Paris under the influence of Whistler, By Sebastian Smee, March 10, 2021

In part, "Full of sinuous curves, rich and mellow coloring, and tautly stretched fabric, “Repose” is one of the sexiest art works I know. Painted by John White Alexander in Paris in 1895, it is drenched in a mood of dusky indolence.

In truth, the painting, which hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is almost too seductive. Missing any grace note of gaucheness to save it from its own shameless resplendence, it is a picture that clearly has designs on you. But give into them, I say. Why not?"

I don't find the painting erotic as the writer did, but Alexander's life & the influences on his painting are fascinating. I would likely pass hanging this painting but appreciate its background.

Thanks.

117 This is such a feminine painting. It is all gentle curves in the arrangement of the pillows (what is it with chicks and so many pillows?) which is echoed in her posture. The model's pose is also one that only women could find comfortable and a bit provocative. The soft colors emphasize the overall sense of relaxation, a sensual languor. Very effective.

I guess so. A lot of my neighbors, esp. on upper floors of the dump, have them sticking out of at least one window. My place faces west, though, and gets vicious sunlight from two until seven p.m., so I'd need a unit in each room. The Antifa crowd wearing Hamas towels now will put on Red Hats and burn cities like in 2020. This will be the theater to allow Biden to declare us violent insurrectionists, and lock everyone down under martial law. Absolutely predictable.

And please don't quote the Insurrection act, since when do Democrats care about laws or the Constitution? Which are you going to do write a letter of Reprimand for Joe Biden's permanent record, or put him on double secret probation?

I've used two different types.
First one was 10k btu, and needed a 16" recycled air pipe to catch the large volume of conditioned air. Very good system, was able to take the ambient temp of a tent in full sunlight down to about 80 degrees in July at the fort worth texas naval air station.

Seond one, was what you described, need to run the exhaust theough a tube to the outside. A basic standard window, with a 4"dryer hose sized piece of plywood foe the exhaust hose will be adequate.

Pay attention to the condensate drip system, or you'll have a big wet mess indoors.

155 Per the discussion of Southern manners vs Northern brusqueness in the last thread...

I was raised in rural CO. It's not the South, but it was similar in that regard, and I was raised by a Southern man, and a very well-polished Northern Jewess who taught politeness and respect as core values.

I watched all that go by the boards as we were replaced by West Coast people in CO. They brought their shitty attitude and manners and corroded the culture to the point where it was unrecognizable, at least in the Front Range Corridor. Demolished.

When I got out and went to a real place, it was such a breath of fresh air. Just the other day a short lady at the store walked up and said "excuse me, sir, could you please reach that shelf for me," so I did, and she said "thank you, have a blessed day," so I said "likewise, ma'am!" In Denver, you don't approach people anymore. You don't offer help. You keep to yourself, because social interactions are rare and usually unpleasant when they happen.

Turns out, you *can* go home again. Just not to your old home.

158 Ohio Elections Official Says He Will Soon Exclude Biden From the Ballot. a legislative fix that would ban foreign donations to state ballot initiatives stalled, and "is the price that Democrats must pay to ensure that Mr. Biden is on the ballot, and that he would otherwise enforce the law as written."

There's always a higher court. Such a foolish decision will be appealed. No way one of our two major party candidates won't be on the Ohio ballot without a court battle.

These kind of deadlines have been approved by the courts before. I wouldn't be so sure.

It's a given Biden won't win OH. This mostly affects down ticket races. If dems can't vote for president, a lot won't bother to vote. But who knows, maybe republicans will be the ones who won't bother to vote if Trump runs un-opposed.

it probably won't mean much if Biden runs a serious write in campaign. I wouldn’t even be surprised if he wins Ohio as a write-in.

Why don't Democrats just organize a big Zoom call to nominate Biden and get this fucking thing over with? Answer one technicality being played against us with another?

I could take it, or both, with me when I move. They apparently are not lightweight, running at 75 lbs. or so for the mid-powered models (?). But they roll on wheels, so moving them may not be too bad.

Some of them have timer units. I could set the thing to shut down half an hour or so after I leave for work, and to come on an hour or so before I'd be home. The place would get pretty hot in between times for the cats, though.

The combo of 1 window and 1 portable might run me a good $700. Paying an A/C tech myself to come out, inspect, and recharge the central unit would be about the same (or less? Dunno). If it needs more heavy-duty work, then I wouldn't do that out of my own pocket.

I used one extensively years ago. Two things;
1. You probably have to drain the thing (condensation)
2. Exhaust vent, if needed, will pump hot air out so you'll need a window or door cracked open for it

Attic fan? Luxury! We had a couple of those big box fans, and if I slept under the moving air from one, I often woke up with a headache. No air movement from outside, either, as our apartment was enclosed by higher buildings on three sides, and the back wall had no windows.

When I was twelve Mom bought a window unit. I immediately changed from "sitting outside during summer vacations under an awning and drinking ice water" to "INDOORS, baby!"

Check out rental houses and try out several different types before you buy. Maybe renting is your solution as well? Also need to consider whether or not you are comfortable leaving a window unsecure for the exhaust in N.O. could the exhaust be routed to your dryer? Maybe into the nearest bathrom exhaust fan?

NEWS: FBI SEARCHES AT PRESIDENT BIDEN'S HOMES ALSO INCLUDED DEADLY FORCE POLICY (which is standard)

A person familiar with the Hur investigation confirms that the standard Department of Justice policy statement regarding the use of deadly force was also included in the operations order for the searches at President Biden’s residences in Delaware.

CONTEXT: yesterday, former President Trump suggested that the Biden administration wanted to kill him during a search of his Mar-a-Lago estate. A fundraising email read, "Joe Biden was locked & loaded ready to take me out".

The FBI said standard protocol was followed, no additional steps were taken and there was no departure from the norm.
This news about the deadly force policy also being in place for the FBI searches at Biden's homes underscores that point.

Spent most of the day at Ft. Pierce federal courthouse to cover two hearings in classified docs case.

Special Counsel team's frustration with Judge Aileen Cannon is really evident.

And it's glorious.

David Harbach, one of Smith's lead prosecutors and usually a cool customer in court, had a series of mini temper tantrums this morning. At times pounding his fist on the podium and clapping his hands in anger to emphasize a point, Harbach was totally unprofessional, demeaning, and petulant.

Cannon asked Harbach to "calm down" during one diatribe about accusations DOJ threatened one of the defense attorneys to get his client to flip on Donald Trump.

He kept trying to argue with her--Cannon also remains measured most of the time and is no fan of antics--and when she asked him a question about an issue, he shot back "that's not the right question."

A few reporters in the media room even gasped.

Harbach is flailing bc his case is imploding.

DOJ never thought their dirty, sloppy, corrupt tricks would see the light of day. Biden regime never thought information such as the FBI's operations order related to MAL raid that included lethal force guidance would ever be made public.

But Cannon is systematically dismantling this case by holding hearings (like today) and ordering the unsealing of key motions and evidence. She is a one-woman wrecking crew and Smith's team knows there is very little they can do about it.

And she is nowhere near finished. Just this week, in addition to the unsealed motions posted yesterday that revealed details about the MAL raid, Cannon ordered the unsealing of several motions filed earlier in the case.

I'm working on a Substack post for the weekend on the nature of the motions today and the proceedings--but suffice to say Jack Smith's team already appears deflated and defeated.

Posted by: Montec at May 23, 2024 10:33

Sure. But it's dry, and high-altitude, and there's breeze most of the time. That makes that kind of heat less horrible.

When it's low-altitude, and humid, and still, it feels worse.

The tradeoff of course is that high-altitude sun, with no atmosphere to blunt the UV, roasts white people like Christmas hams. As nasty as the humid heat can be, you're way less likely to get awful sunburns, melanomas, etc.

270 Well, there's attic fans and attic fans. Many systems do have fluttering ducts that draw from the living space, but another way is to draw air through the eaves and out through the end of the house, keeping the air-conditioned area sealed off. This does away with ceiling heat, and the "heat-shock" radiance of the insulation just under the roof that gets soaked through with sun heat.

I have a flat roof over half the second story, and put in foam trays between the rafters above the insulation, evacuated by a common duct and a single roof fan. It extended the no-air-conditioning season by a month on each end of the cooling season, and cut down the A/C load by a noticeable amount.

My house is *just* old enough that it wasn't built with central A/C (it was unusual where I live for a house to be built without it, but not rare). The house was built for it, but it was never installed. I have a whole-house fan that was blocked up when the A/C was installed, but it's still hooked up and if you hit the switch, it *will* come on. I need to finish removing it. Running a whole house fan on a system that's been converted and blocked is bad. I want to remove the possibility.

It’s semi-erect and bleeding slightly, but there’s gauze on hand to soak things up. Bobbing in and out from under the skin at the shaft is an inch-long needle (technically a cannula since it’s not sharp and is going into a small hole already created by a needle) attached to a syringe that contains hyaluronic acid. This same type of filler that’s been injected into countless lips is now being used to pursue a plumper, thicker look — except in this case, it’s one most people won’t see.

321 NOAA can't tell me if it'll rain today, tomorrow or the day after. They can't tell me what the high or low temp will be today or tomorrow, nor tell me how cloudy or clear it will be.

But, sure, they know it'll be an "above average" year for Hurricanes. Just like it was last year, the year before that and the year before and....

323 You have no idea how disgusted I am. I lived in a house for 31 years from when it was 5 yrs old.
My electric bill with TXU Monthly Averaging was between $275 & $300 a month for one bedroom and bathroom less. The month before last month's $115 dollar bill? $108.

329 I live in a humid climate. The currently unoccupied house next door has a swamp cooler mounted in the window. How does that even work?

I can't see any way that it would. In CO some people had them in their houses -- a dry climate, true, but the air felt damp all the time. In humidity like this . . . no.

335 Had the same thing twice over many years. In both cases it was broken and/or unsecured wiring for the blower and took about one minute for the right mechanic to find and fix.

Posted by: L - If they do it with you, they'll do it to you, too at May 23, 2024 10:15 AM

Had this happen at my apartment as well. First time the system was out of refrigerant. 2nd time there was a wire on the outside blower that had become disconnected. Probably accidentally when maintenance had been weed whipping around it. But it was nice that the second time it was a really quick fix to just reconnect the wire.

Do you have ductwork? Have you checked the filter?

I just changed the filter a couple of weeks ago. As for ductwork, no clue. The air was cooling fine until yesterday -- and I would have noticed, as it's been hitting 80+ every day for a long while now.

337 I figured it would just demolish A/C efficiency.

And you'd be right, if the area being ventilated isn't sealed off from the A/C area. I might as well mention (since this stumped a buddy of ours all winter): if you have a woodstove or fireplace, you'll want to lock out all those ventilator fans during your heating season. His attic door didn't have a threshold seal, and the house developed enough draft through the eaves to back-draw his chimney. He thought he had a broken stove plate.
