Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Server Move 4AM SundayI'll be moving the entire blog to a new server at 4AM, because as you just saw the old server is having serious problems. This is expected to take about an hour. The site will stay up throughout, but comments posted starting 4AM until I post an "all clear" may not make it across to the new server. My apologies to the readers who went without content while the server was taking a dirt nap, and to the bloggers here who couldn't post their content. Technical details: The virtualisation software we use has gotten corrupted somehow and the automatic startup and monitoring scripts no longer work. The server itself has been up the entire time - it hasn't been rebooted since the datacenter fire was put out three years ago - but things on the server just stop working at random. The only practical solution is a whole new server - which fortunately I was already in the process of setting up.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

The master paused for one minute, then suddenly produced an axe and smashed the novice's disk drive to pieces. Calmly he said: "To believe in one's backups is one thing. To have to use them is another." Posted by: caf at May 18, 2024 07:00 PM (/+mVZ) Just tested here with Firefox 126.0. Was getting forever-looped by Cloudflare's "Checking to see if you are human" test. I ran into this one yesterday when my wife couldn't play a game she normally enjoys over at coolmathgames.com. Turns out it's Cloudflare being snippy about the Canvas Blocker add-on feeding it a false fingerprint. To get past it, you have to go into Canvas Blocker's expert settings and add cloudflare.com to Canvas Blocker's whitelist. Kinda says something about CloudFlare though if they're that intent on tracking your browser's fingerprint, and their anti-bot/anti-DDOS services are used by so many sites now. Anyway, now I can get into PowerLineBlog. Willowed by.. The Ode to Joy was beautiful, thank you KT. I have an ode to joy as well, one $16 capacitor fixed our AC for merely ~$350. I now have 2 of the capacitors in my 'cart' so I can fix it the next time. The guy said this capacitor is the usual failure and lasts anywhere between 2 and 5 years. We've been in this house 3 years. Posted by: Braenyard at May 18, 2024 07:39 PM (lCWOD) I'm not sure what that means. Obviously self defense is the basic principle upon which "ethical war" would be founded. From there one can ask "at what point are my actions no longer self defense?" Not unlike the person who shoots the home invader, and then when he's running away, shoots him in the back. Did the home owner lose the right to fire that last shot? The law would generally say he did. Posted by: BurtTC at May 18, 2024 07:42 PM (ip5GP) 189

Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) at May 18, 2024 07:20 PM (t/2Uw) BUY buttermilk. And do NOT get the "low fat" crap. That's just 2% milk with "butterfat solids" added back into it. 225 ... "Those of you that liked Open Range might also like Broken Trail"
Yep. For a long time with a very few exceptions (LOTR movies, John Carter, Second Hand Lions) the movies I enjoyed most were westerns. The Selleck/Elliott L'Amour TV movies, Silverado, Quigley Down Under, Tombstone, Josey Wales, and so forth. For my taste they are usually better written, better photographed and acted. They also produced the most quotable lines: "slap hot iron to it", "Don't piss down my back and tell me it's raining", "I'm your Huckleberry". Honorable mention to Jeremiah Johnson if only because of the muzzleloaders, beautiful scenery and Del Gue's rants. Posted by: JTB at May 18, 2024 08:26 PM (zudum) 333

As to Publix, they put a sign up at the old FarmFresh down the road, as if they were going to take it over. (It's been empty for some years after FF went under; Kroger took over many of their spots.) Then the sign went away. Then a month or so later, they tore down all of the building except the mini-mall part that still had businesses (a Chinese place, Pizza Hut, a nails place) and are now building a new building there.
I don't hold out hope they're building a new spot for the one gun store/range, nor for Publix. But it will be interesting. Posted by: GWB at May 18, 2024 08:38 PM (zUT35) 375

Posted by: GWB My closest Publix was middle of a strip mall. The demo'd the entire store, a couple on either side, and when they rebuilt it it wider and they also bumped it out front and back. Took about a year... It's a very good location. The side road goes to a big ass dead end area when it crosses the interstate... with shitloads of possible lots in new sub-divisons and almost the only way out is pass the new/improved Publix. As a whole the area is already built out with residential only from the Publix to the interstate (and there will never be on ramps ther). Captive Customers. Mr. Zeus has left us. Her Majesty took him up to Shreveport to deliver him to his new owners, who are on their way back to California from Westminster. We took him in to the vet on Friday for his health certificate. He got a bath this morning before he left, which he did not enjoy. This was his first long-distance trip. HM said he was vocal on the way. But he's met his new family and will be spending the night in their RV before they head off on Sunday. He's a very handsome boy who looks like his great-uncle (and half-brother) Dutch (the Beeg Boy). We hope he has the same success and will do us proud. "But there is a more local cause as well for their refusal to countenance basic realities of military science in their stewardship of Israel’s national security.
Since Israel’s establishment 76 years ago, the IDF General Staff has operated as a closed gentlemen’s club. Only those aligned with the zeitgeist of Israel’s secular, leftist elites have been permitted to enter. In the initial decades of the state, the social and ideological uniformity of the General Staff wasn’t that significant. Israel had no option other than fighting to win. But since the United States transformed Israel into a military client in the 1970s, membership in the club involved embracing a doctrine of subservience and dependence on the Pentagon and the American liberal political establishment. _Caroline Glick Posted by: Braenyard at May 18, 2024 09:32 PM (lCWOD) 517

Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at May 18, 2024 09:07 PM (MoZTd) I was out on I-45 North, heading for Dallas, when that storm rolled in on my path, at about 3pm. I'd left Galveston at about 1:30 pm, and the storm hit (not the light rain beginnings, but THE STORM), when I was just passing The Woodlands, and coming into the Southernmost beginnings of Conroe. Those two locales have damn near merged, anyway. Dark as Midnight, well into Huntsville, where I pulled off the freeway, for both food and refuge at a local McDs. Longest I've ever stayed at a McDs, too. About 90 minutes, till the rain slacked off a bit. Pressed on Northbound. Skies began to lighten a bit, around Centerville. All told, about 100 miles of OMG monsoon, 100 ft. visibility driving. Hell, it became a nice, beautiful sunset evening, by time I made Ennis, TX. Countin' my blessings, here!
