The ONT Is Always Looking Out For YouTM

The Saturday Night Joke

"Bless me Father, for I have sinned. I have been with a loose girl."

The priest asks, "Is that you, little Joey Pagano?"

"Yes, Father, it is."

"And who was the girl you were with?"

"I can't tell you, Father. I don't want to ruin her reputation."

"Well, Joey, I'm sure to find out her name sooner or later so you may as well tell me now. Was it Tina Minetti?"

"I cannot say."

"Was it Teresa Mazzarelli?"

"I'll never tell."

"Was it Nina Capelli?"

"I'm sorry, but I cannot name her."

"Was it Cathy Piriano?"

"My lips are sealed."

"Was it Rosa DiAngelo, then?"

The priest sighs in frustration. "You're very tight lipped, and I admire that. But you've sinned and have to atone. You cannot be an altar boy now for 4 months. Now you go and behave yourself."

Joey walks back to his pew, and his friend Franco slides over and whispers, "What'd you get?"

"Four months vacation and five good leads...

Brotherly love leads to a Genius Award.

MAY 15--Add a soiled adult diaper to the long list of strange items used as weapons during alleged batteries in the Free State of Florida.

After responding early yesterday to a reported domestic battery in St. Petersburg, cops gave this account of the alleged incident:

“The defendant threw a diaper at the victim striking him in the center of his torso. The diaper contained urine and other feces.”

69 Fwiw, Grateful and I paid a visit to Arlington National Cemetery this morning. The Old Guard places flags at all veteran headstones for Memorial Day each year. The place is worth a visit anytime, but seeing hundreds of stones each decorated with a flag was memorable.

The place was packed at the visitor center. We presume most went to the more well-known destinations. We've been many times before, so we opted for parts of the grounds that are less visited. Good choice. We had full sections to ourselves and went for long stretches without seeing another soul.

We appreciate being able to say thank you. We also appreciate the grounding, perspective, and humility re-set. Hard to complain about minor life inconveniences.

When I took the cover off, I found an end of 12-2 labeled - "Spare circuit. Terminates in box in crawl space." This conductor was capped off and not connected to a CB.

I had to know. Went into the crawl space - there, I found the other end, in a metallic work box, labeled - "Spare circuit. Terminates in #2 Subpanel".

Reminds me of the time I was in Hong Kong on Stanley Island and I saw an orthodox Jew getting a smoke. Went over to him, wished him a "Shabbat Shalom" (it was Saturday there). He mumbled "Shabbat Shalom" back, put his cigarette out, and quickly walked away...
I realized later he wasn't supposed to light a cigarette on Shabbat (prohibition on kindling fire on Shabbat as that is work, so observant Jews don't even light an oven burner on Shabbat) and he must've thought he'd been caught. LOL

98 Trump making a pitch for the Libertarians to nominate him or at least support him at their convention was a ballsy move. Tie this to his on going pitch to Black and Hispanic voters, campaigning in Democrat strongholds, and you have as close as I have ever seen, Reagan possibly excluded, him becoming, or at least approximating, a unity candidate. If nothing else, he is swinging not for the fences but the parking lot outside the stadium.

I love to greet Amish or Mennonites with a hardy "Wiebist?" (How are you?)

102 In a certain institution of higher education which I occasionally had to visit during the course of my career, there was a glassed-over bulletin board in the hallway of the main facility. Every time I passed it, I would always get a chuckle from one notice posted there:

Federal funds to assist Amish industrial training.

Looked it up once and it was quite legit. Even though that was in what's been called the "Buckle of the Bible Belt," none of the faculty or staff were able to see the humor in it. I always pictured a group of very earnest, bearded young men attentively listening to a presentation about 3-D printing and its application to barn-raising.

There are few moments in history where someone changes everything and none of them were without flaws. Trump is being persecuted for having the audacity to take one the most powerful forces on the planet, the US government.

It takes a lot of things to do that including fuck you money and an enormous ego. Trump has both. There is nobody else looking to take his place.

We aren't voting for a boyfriend. We are voting for a guy who will gladly walk into the arena and fight for us against communists who are trying to take over this country. Trump, like everyone who will vote for him, is flawed. I don't give a shit and I'm tired of hearing the But Trump bullshit.

197 Did get my UPS parcel this afternoon.

Tried paying online again early AM and my forced UPS account had the card info stored as my primary payment method properly but it still wouldn't accept payment.

Phoned a nearby UPS Store [after they didn't return the message I left on their answering machine last night] and was told I couldn't pay at a freaking UPS Store in person and would have to do it online.

Told my retailer about the 'not at home' lies and the driver confiding to me that they didn't have enough handheld card readers when my parcel was literally in his truck; and I didn't know if they'd be returning the items to him. He said let me see what I can do.

At around 2 PM a truck with a different driver than the one I'd talked to on Wed and Fri and with what looked like TWO scanners on his belt made the delivery; and the reader accepted my card even with tap, not requiring me to enter my PIN.

202 Let's assume for a second Joe Biden will not be the nominee. He'll either have some medical emergency/death or he will be swapped out at the convention by the Superdelegates.

With that out of the way, what does Trump do against other Dems? Will the fallout from Biden's policies tar all Dems? Or will Trump soldier on, not giving a shit who he has to beat?

I think a lot of the smugness on the Dem side (calling constituents "clowns" for going to a Trump rally, e.g.) is due to the fact the word is out it won't be Biden as the nominee. They think his miserable approval ratings will be moot when he leaves. I don't think that's going to work. But who knows?

Raises an interesting question of regional idiom - growing up in northeast Mississippi my father and other people of his age group, when talking about getting a driver's license, they would always call it "getting some license."

Much younger than 29 me would ask "shouldn't it be just getting a license?" and Dad would get irritated and say "Would you go to the store and get a molassee?" (in reference, of course, to getting some molasses). Being a respectful young'un, I would act as if that made sense.

Anybody else ever come across this particular type of phrase or was that just something that held sway in the foothills of the Appalachians?

Much younger than 29 me would ask "shouldn't it be just getting a license?" and Dad would get irritated and say "Would you go to the store and get a molassee?" (in reference, of course, to getting some molasses). Being a respectful young'un, I would act as if that made sense.

Anybody else ever come across this particular type of phrase or was that just something that held sway in the foothills of the Appalachians?
Posted by: John Drake Nearing the Caspian Sea at May 25, 2024 11:43 PM (u/Zei)

Well, given that, in another context, "license" implies a degree of moral laxity, "getting some license" could be grammatically correct. Maybe this was a play on words?

Somehow, if this film was ever made in Britain again, it would be from the point of view of those magnificent camp guards doing their patriotic duty and the evil barbarity they suffered when their charges rioted for no reason! The inmates were treated so well! The guards will all be named Mohammed, too.

Posted by: Kindltot at May 26, 2024 12:20 AM (D7oie)

336 I haven't heard that idiom. But it makes sense, a license (countable plastic card) gives you license (uncountable ephemeral concept) to drive.

"License to drive" versus Bond's "license to kill." I don't think he had a plastic card.
Posted by: mikeski

Explained that way, it does make sense. 007 is licensed to kill and one is licensed to drive. The big question, I guess, is why we went to the singular - we go get a hunting or fishing license, we train to earn a pilot's license, and so forth. There may be some evidence there of a attitudinal shift in reference to governmental authority there.

341 Aloha once again.

Couple of weeks back I rewatched Finding Nemo and so tonight I watched Finding Dory for the first time.

Pretty good. Not as good as the original, but I liked it. It felt like a side story with a lot of padding to get it to 90 minutes.

The ending was happy. If the movie had one major flaw it was that. It should have been a downer ending. So...do I gotta give spoiler alerts?...it's about Dory searching for her parents. Briefly it seems as though they're dead but SURPRISE! They're alive. I think dead parents would have worked better and given the film much needed pathos. But late era Pixar isn't going down that road anymore. Very unfortunate.

Still a pretty good movie. Introduced some fun characters and the post-credit scene was great.

Had not considered that angle - the phrase could have originated that way. Dad never seemed to see it as a pun or a similar contrivance, though, so it may have been something he picked up from the previous generation.

Weirdly enough, people of the same generation as my father in the Delta region of the state use a lot of terms that mystify me - one example being an older gentleman saying that he needed to get a "Brinnel cat" to take care of his "ground squirrels". There are also folks who call what you and I would term a Thrush a "Hamser." And dragon flies are called "Snake Doctors."

390 In re abbreviations and acronyms, that same institution of higher learning I referenced up thread had to undergo a process of re-certification every five years or so. This was done by SACS, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. That all-important endorsement that a degree-granting institution was acting as it should in producing well-informed students led to a lot of terms, like "Are you SACS-able," meaning do you meet the educational requirements to teach in a given discipline.

All the regional accrediting agencies underwent a re-organization in 2015 or so, and re-named themselves (in reference to the South) the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, with the proud new acronym SACS-COC. Just as was the case with the poster offering Amish Industrial Training, no one seemed to see the inherent humor of ... well, it kind of writes itself, doesn't it?

I got a pretty, partly cloudy, Blue Sky Sunset pic further up I-45, around Ennis, TX.

Posted by: Puddleglum at work

This is true - reminds me of "Next of Kin," a Patrick Swayze film from 1989. Even though it's set in Chicago, Illinois, it's got Swayze as a hillbilly-turned-cop on the Chicago PD who specializes in dealing with hillbilly-related crime (hey, it was the Eighties, narratives were not the strong suit then) coming into Chicago from Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

His hillbilly kin get caught up in a feud with the local Mafiosi and Swayze has to defuse the situation while trying to save his own relatives. Not an Oscar-worthy cinematic effort, but it does at least acknowledge how far the Appalachians stretch.

So, what would the cutoff be for being really weirded out about finding a link to your spouse like that?

Second cousins can marry in most jurisdictions, but I think I'd want to see a fourth cousin, at the closest.

That would put our common ancestor back in Europe, and I've got no idea who any of those people are. My family isn't much into genealogy.

As an upper limit, if your closest relatives are back 32 generations, you have statistically no genetic information in common, since dividing the human genome in half 32 times leaves you with less than one gene.

470 My all-time favorite is a local family who did one of those send-in DNA tests and discovered their grandparents were brother and sister. It wasn't their fault, they had been separated early and put on orphan trains years later. They just happened to meet each other at a county fair and hit it off immediately, eventually got married etc.
The family quietly discarded the DNA records and asked everyone to just kind of forget about the whole thing.

If that's in reference to the "32 generations with no common ancestors," it is almost literally impossible. Pure Icelander marrying a pure Maori, maybe.

There weren't 2^32 humans alive in that generation. For it to happen, you and your spouse would both have to be inbred several times over, much more recently.

And we all are quite inbred at that level, because I just said the world population was not 4 billion people, 32 generations ago. We didn't get there until about 1974.

In about 7 generations back, the probability of carrying any genes of those ancestors is less than 50%.

Seem to recall the Catholic church wanted what it considered at least 4 degrees of separation, that is: 1st cousins.
him->his father/mother, 1
his father/mother-> his/her grandparents, 2
his/her grandparents-> her mother/father, 3
her mother/father -> her, 4

The amount of separation has changed with time.

492 470 My all-time favorite is a local family who did one of those send-in DNA tests and discovered their grandparents were brother and sister. It wasn't their fault, they had been separated early and put on orphan trains years later. They just happened to meet each other at a county fair and hit it off immediately, eventually got married etc.
The family quietly discarded the DNA records and asked everyone to just kind of forget about the whole thing.

Sounds like that story on TV (real story) where the Mom put all 9 of her kids up for adoption, and most were too young to realize it. One of the older kids did know, and would make sure to ask anyone she was thinking of seeing if they were adopted. Well, one guy say, "No, I'm not adopted", but turned out his parents never told him, and it turned out he was indeed one of her brothers. As he put it, "We went further than I'm comfortable talking about"...

495 When you live in a small, isolated village, eventually you'll be related to almost everyone available. It happens. I found it several times on my Mexican side. I have 2-G grandparents that were related; His G-Grandmother and her 2G-Grandmother were the same person (the common relative's husband might have been different). 7 degrees (or as the Church wrote it, 3rd with 4th degree cosanguinity).

Trying to keep wealth in the family over generations by marrying within the family can only go on so long before the genetic glitch in that system becomes apparent.

506 Serbia and the Balkans in general.
They have an incredibly complex and convoluted system of terms for every single relative imaginable going to at least five generations. Different terms for a 'cousin' for whether they are on the mother's side or the father's, grandparents have different titles, and on and on and on.
I've had people enthusiastically start in on it; my eyes just glaze over and I nod politely. Rakija helps when it really gets into an animated discussion.

509 And, ordered a three-square file for my little set of projects. I ended up on Ebay for a NOS vintage example, Swiss-made. Almost all files in the whole world are now made in India or China, and from forums and such, almost all are total shit. USA hasn't had a file-maker in decades, the Swiss and Germans have outsourced except for certain ultra-pricey product lines. and it seemed I am better off buying a leftover NOS file.
The file advertised on Amazon as being a Grobet was, in fact, a counterfeit! the title was misleading... To get a 'real' Grobet you have to go to their online store, and even then, it's apparently a crap shoot if it's a good one or not, as none of the ones you can easily buy are made in Switzerland.

*****************************************

Even defining one generation as 30 years, 32 generations is a period of about one thousand years, and it would be trivially easy to find two people with no common ancestors during that period. Endogamy within local areas and within specific population groups means that someone's # of ancestors x generations back does not resemble 2^x.

513 This last visit I had a Serb get all enthused about the terms for relatives and earnestly start in on it, which then involved other people...

I explicitly stated, "I don't care, I am not related by blood to anyone here, there are only cultural limitations due to my position as 'brother' to this other guy."

Nobody listened at all and it went on for almost an hour.

Posted by: LenNeal at May 26, 2024 03:49 AM (43xH1)

514 Hard to say exactly (haven't been able to look at records from one 2G-Grandma), but I *think* I don't have any repeats until about 6 or 7 generations away. LIke I wrote, small values of x.

Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at May 26, 2024 03:52 AM (ynpvh)

515 For instance, in Old Serbian Culture, I am prohibited from getting it on with anyone in my Kumovi's family, despite my not being related genetically at all.
I suspect all this business is

1) An effort to avoid inbreeding, always a problem in isolated, mountain-type populations
2) My limitation is likely due to the old practice of my being somewhere in line to replace a deceased family member in a marriage
3) Various inheritances

Posted by: LenNeal at May 26, 2024 03:53 AM (43xH1)

516 It also doesn't help when there are a number of illegitimate kids born to ancestors...a real "Who's your Daddy" situation, as in the records it's listed as "father unknown"...

Eastern European ancestry. I grew up in that culture. Both of my parents were first generation Americans, Dad was Slovak, Mom was Hungarian. My neighborhood was mostly made of that mix, with a few Ukrainian families as well. Much of the customs in Deer Hunter were very familiar to me and to my friends.
