Dana Bash and Jake Tapper (!!!!!) Will "Moderate" First Debate ?!?!

Oh. My.

It is lunacy for Trump to have agreed to this! Madness!

CNN isn't even hiding their intent or pretending at moderation by inviting a token Country Club Republican like Hugh Hewitt. It's just a full-on Trump Derangement Syndrome Murderer's Row.

Does he want to lose?

I hope he at least is on-the-ball enough to bring Jake Tapper's book alleging the 2000 election was stolen and brings it with him and shows it to the cameras when Tapper begins his 60 minute harangue on "election denial:"

downanddirtyjaketapper.jpg

So, President Joe Biden puts out a 13-second video challenging Donald Trump to a debate, Trump accepts, and CNN already has it scheduled for June 27. There won't be an audience ... that was one of the Biden camp's demands. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will also be absent, per Biden's demands -- which works out, because co-moderator Jake Tapper has said he would NOT host a town hall with Kennedy because of his lies about vaccines.

Tapper's co-moderator will be Dana Bash ... this Dana Bash:

Jake Tapper's entire show is Trump hatred and DNC talking points for 45 minutes (with 15 minutes of commercials for Viagra).

Why would Trump agree to this?

We'll soon be pining for the Good Old Days of Chris Wallace:

Unrelated: Capitol Hill police discovered a bag of cocaine in the Capitol Building.

A police source describes the coke bag as "larger than Don Henley's discreet on-stage coke snifter" but "smaller than Hunter Biden's weekender crack satchel."

The majority of people already think Trump is being railroaded. This will further that notion.

Not going to say it's a stroke of brilliance or anything, but the optics might work out in Trump's favor far more than having a Tucker Carlson type.

First I thought it was a test for Biden to see if he could change the dynamics of the race. If not, the DNC would pull him at the convention.

My current thinking is the coordination between the HW and Judge Merchan is so deep that they are guaranteeing a conviction and Biden/CNN/Tapper want to hammer Trump over the head with "convicted felon" in a debate, possibly only days after a verdict.

65 "Why would Trump agree to this?"

I explained this yesterday. What choice did Trump have? Biden made this "offer" expecting and hoping that Trump would say no. It was a bluff. Trump called it.

If he didn't, then the media would have universally been screeching that Trump was afraid to debate Biden. (And a lot of comments here would be to the effect that Trump blundered by not calling the bluff.) Any later agreement to debate would be seen as capitulation.

What difference does fighting over the terms mean anyway? No matter what the GOP candidate does, the terms always suck. Always. It's either accept the sucky terms, or don't debate at all.

Oh and I think it's 50/50 that this debate happens at all.

Biden is IS a blithering idiot who has brought the country to the brink of disaster and no debate is going to change that.

Well, that's the thing. Most of them would never admit it in so many words up front because they know full well it makes them sound like monsters.

But if you ask them questions about specifically what restrictions they would allow, they won't agree to any of them.

A reasonable, logical person would then conclude that they are in favor of abortion-on-demand up to birth. But, again, that makes them sound like monsters, and they know it.

They're good people, therefore they can't be monsters, so that leaves them with the choice of either not admitting that that's exactly what they want in those words (it's saying the exact words that makes it true) or they have to convince themselves that what they want is a good thing and not monstrous at all.

110 Meh, an early debate is unlikely to do much to move the needle either way but it will give the political pundits orgasms to talk about it endlessly.

The election is still likely to come down (aside from cheating) to a referendum on the current administration. For the most part, any 'bad' information about Trump is already baked into the cake which reduces any downside (but also any upside) to a debate. For Biden, a good performance will not quell unease about his mental and physical wellbeing nor will it reverse inflation, possible loss of Ukraine too, and other hideous unpopular Democrat initiatives.

So spazz away about the debate--Trump's judgment, etc.

Still leaves us in a hole of the Biden junta's making and hides the fact that Ukraine is collapsing and Europe is teetering. The recent couple of attempted assassinations in Euroland always leads to more violence. The left is losing in Euroland and them losing their shit will cause more political violence there.

Same thing in Latin America land--the great lefty takeovers in Chile, Brazil, and Colombia are leading to repudiation by the economic devastation that the lefties inevitably bring about.

He's had years of extemporaneous speaking experience at the WH. They had to preempt his C-19 conferences with Andy Cuomo because he was doing so well with a hostile crowd.

This isn't 2020. He knows what to expect, and he's going in as the publicly perceived victim. The optics of a 2.5-on-1 will be there for all to see. He doesn't need an audience there (it's a distraction anyway). He doesn't need RFKJ there. He navigated a debate where they seeded the crowd with women (the Welker debate) and he was fine.

We'll see. Trump still has plenty of time to make demands or make excuses for not showing up.

Probably do the 1st one, then be critical of the process and say it's not worth it. He'll complain the moderators were biased and Joe was incompetent. Not worth his time or effort to do the 2nd one.

He, and the entire cult, actually believe the caricature of President Biden they’ve created is real.

He'll debate when hell freezes over. He can’t put a sentence together. They can’t risk him saying Jimmy Connors instead of Jimmy Carter. Or confusing Nikki Haley with Nancy Pelosi. Or thinking Barack Obama is president.

Trump has obviously exhibited poor judgment in the past. This may well be an example of it. But then again it might not be. I take the decision as more one of confidence than strategy.

And I remember that Trump chose to do a CNN townhall instead of participating in a debate with other candidates and this was roundly criticized as well. They will gang up on him and make him look like a fool!

But he did so well all the Left got mad at CNN for their failure to destroy him. AND he defeated all comers in that primary. That he didn't debate him.

So yes Team Biden may have called Trumps bluff. But the possibility exists that he has called Team Biden's bluff.

There have been at least two instances of the media losing control of the narrative during a debate just with Trump. The one where he kept circling Hillary like a shark and it threw her off, and the one where he pretty much ran over the CNN moderator and the audience took his side.

So while I doubt any theories of super-genius, Trump *can* handle this stuff. The Biden demand that there not be an audience is an attempt to cut off one of those tactics, but we'll see.

Those on the right that think Trump has bad judgment will continue to do so and whether or not Trump does 'well or not' in a debate is beside the point.

I personally consider whether Trump or allied groups are doing anything about scrubbing voter lists as more important than a debate and I have pretty large amount of data that show debates rarely affect much of anything even the Lincoln Douglas debates did not help underdog Lincoln from losing to Stephen Douglass in IL way back when. She absolutely did, but that was then. She wouldn't have, BTW, but Romney was a stiff. That's not Trump.

Crowley started this debate moderator interference with her one remark. Wallace expanded upon it greatly with his performance - which exceeded even the norm-breaking that Crowley did at the time. Crowley 'won', but that was the end of her career. Same with Wallace.

We know what is coming. Trump is well aware of it as well - remember that this is the guy that went straight up to Harlem after spending the day in a courthouse. People thought that keeping Trump in NYC would have destroyed his campaign, but of course it did not.

I don't have blind faith in Trump in this regard. I now have years of evidence that this guy is a once in a century political talent. Again, I'm not worried about this at all.

232 Constant interruptions from the "moderators" + mic shut off since Trump agreed not to interrupt Biden* will take care of that. And Biden* will be allowed to filibuster while the moderators sit silently like dreamy star-struck cult members. Which they are.

And anyone with even half a brain - read: reachable people - will be able to detect that. People don't like to watch an unfair fight. It's in us.

233 I also was surprised and disappointed with Trump agreeing to this side show. Why did Biden insist on no audience? He didn't want to see audience members who are Gold Star families? Audience members whose loved ones were killed by an illegal alien? And the list goes on.

There should be an audience and the moderators are a joke but Trump will handle them. No, I don't think that he should have agreed to this and if this turns out to be a big mistake, then Trump will have to deal with it.

296 And yeah I am a cultist because Trump set the conditions to make this a win either way. He issued the challenge and Biden looked like a chicken. Suddenly Biden has changed his position - not Trump.

I would have said either way it goes was a good move for Trump. No debate under Biden conditions is a "safe" move. And what ace considers the only move. Okay.

But going to the debate is riskier. Yes, could turn out to be foolish. But if it doesn't, the greater the risk the greater the reward.

This is legal negligence on steroids.

And it shows that he’s asleep to general cultural and legal news as well. Any lawyer worth his salt knows AI can’t write real legal briefs and that several lawyers have been sanctioned for using AI for that very reason.

This man wanted to be Attorney General or White House Counsel. Take that in.

He uses ChatGPT or the like to find legal authorities. Not Westlaw, not LEXIS, not FindLaw, not Cornell’s website. He uses AI.

I suppose on strategy that could have been employed is Trump insisting on not bypassing (which is what the Junta did here) the "nonpartisan" Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) that has organized and hosted general election presidential debates for decades.

In lieu of that, he could have still decided to these two -- although I can't imagine Biden will be the nominee after the DNC Convention in August unless they're absolutely certain they can Steal it again and rub our faces in feces with this decomposing potted plant again.

All the money allocated for defensive fortifications around Kharkov was stolen - there was an article a couple of days ago in Ukrainskya Pravda explaining in detail how this was done.

The BBC interviewed a Ukrainian commander confirming that there are no defensive fortifications in the area.

Building and manning fortifications all along a 500-mile front is impossible for Ukraine. They have to rely on intel to provide the most likely near-future Russian attack points, in-time to adequately mine, fortify, and man against them. Predict wrong, and the Russians gain an advantage. The Russians were and probably still remain masters of battle zone maskirova.

When it is an open seat, possibly debates might make the difference but debates where there is an incumbent tend historically to be a referendum on the incumbent.

Late debates in October (or now in September due to early voting in some states) are more likely to sway the race than in the heat of summer.

Political pundits and political communication types basically believe the public are idiots and will swallow anything. That may work when times are great but trying to shine a turd with purty words doesn't work so well when the incumbent is seen as the source of the ills.

Kind of like primitive belief demonstrated in Excalibur (the movie) that because the king reflected the health of the land--if the health of the realm sucks then the king is at fault and should die/be replaced to restore the health of the realm.

But still...it's time to stop pretending that journalists are impartial, disinterested observers. And stop expecting it. Stop praising conservative leaning moderators for being so "fair" which invariably means going easy on the Democrat and using some of their attack lines on the Republican.

No. It's time to stop pretending. Have two respectable partisans from each side ask questions of the other candidate. By "respectable" I mean while clearly biased, not absolute lunatics like Keith Olbermann. Let's say that the moderators actually answer all Biden's questions for him and cut Trump's mike when he's halfway through making a good point. So what? As far as I can tell, what we see as the audience just looks like the coverage these news outlets give Trump already. Trump is attacked and doesn't actually get to defend himself back. That happens already, every day, during every 'news' program. What would make this different? If the fail case is the status quo and what is going to happen anyway, what's the actual error here for Trump to roll the dice?

I don't really see how Biden benefits from this sort of arrangement because in no case do I see it as actually him making any sort of a coherent or witty response to Trump. These "news" outlets are already hosting one-sided debates against Trump every day where Trump doesn't get to actually debate back. This kind of just seems like all upside to me.

But again, I'm an idiot. Tell me why I'm wrong.

'Supreme Court upholds funding structure for CFPB'

In part, "The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the manner in which the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is funded.

The opinion was written by Justice Clarence Thomas, who reversed the decision of the 5th Circuit. Justices Neil Gorsuch and Samuel Alito dissented.
...

Then, last year, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the CFPB's structure is unconstitutional because, instead of an annual congressional appropriation, Congress set the agency's funding at a capped amount that comes from banking fees paid to the Federal Reserve System.

The government appealed to the Supreme Court because many other agencies are similarly funded, including the Federal Reserve itself; the FDIC, which insures bank deposits; the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, which charters and regulates all national banks; and potentially even Social Security and Medicare, which are funded by a specific tax."

500 Say what you like, but Biden without his pet teleprompter is going to be hilarious (and a disaster). I have no doubt that he will have the questions prior to the debate, but that will only compound the issue. Short term memory is required.

Trump, on the other hand, has been spending his time giving off the cuff speeches to thousands. And, on top of that he has the added qualifier that this is indeed a one sided benefit to Biden. Easily brought home in opening and closing statements.

I think Biden's offer (which was accepted by Trump without edit) was supposed to be denied so they could draw out the process and never have a comparison of the two on the same stage. Trump's team accepted without reservation, and Biden's team was hoping he wouldn't.

These "news" outlets are already hosting one-sided debates against Trump every day where Trump doesn't get to actually debate back. This kind of just seems like all upside to me.

It's not ideal for Trump, but I also don't see how it could be a disaster either.

Biden's handlers can try this but remember, Biden has note cards whenever he talks and these cards tell him what to do - Pause - sit - stand here, etc. He fights with a teleprompter to read his answers. Biden is not going to remember his preparations without an earpiece, a lot of note cards with instructions, and a kick ass drug cocktail. Biden's performance at a debate is a wild card - it can go either way.

566 In the before times the media had the veneer of being objective and fair and we ached to prove they were "biased" while they were busy handing questions to the D beforehand.

And where CNN and Trump are concerned, they don't have this veneer. True or False?

Don't bother answering.

567 I'm sure Trump will handle this situation as he did with the earlier CNN interview that the same folks said that he shouldn't do.

We have too many bedwetter commentators in the "conservative" movement. Should get their undies unbunched.

568 On a first order approximation, I get why this seems stupid for Trump to do. But I wonder if he's got some specific plan to combat the moderators. Biden absolutely cannot think on his feet, so all Trump needs to do is to get him off the script that the moderators intend to provide.

I guess I'm less pessimistic than Ace on this one. What Trump's got in his favor is he absolutely knows he's walking into a trap, so if he's got some way to neutralize it, this could be fatal to Biden's campaign.

Its trivial. Just say to Biden - Look, we don't need these saps getting in the way, let's just ask questions of each other. Are you afraid of debating me without these two helping you?

then let the chaos begin.

571 step back bedwetters and think ...

Biden ABSOLUTELY didn't want any debates ...

He offered to debate with conditions he hoped would cause Trump to decline ... (just like the bedwetters want)

what do you ALWAYS want to force you opponent to do ? The thing he DOESN'T WANT to do ... (like debate)

A hour of Trump bashing will only increase his poll lead ... and hour of even handed questions will hammer Biden (and increase Trmps lead) ...

seems like a win-win ... and thats before Trump (WHO ALWAYS HAS a hostile interviewer in all appearances) turns the tables on the moderators once or twice or trice during the debate ...

572 I'm not one for the "four dimensional chess" BS - but I think I see the outline of an actual strategy here. Trump's numbers have gone up with every piece of lawfare aimed at him, and he is very good at selling the victimhood persona (required in 2024). I think they have made a choice to lean in to the persecution.

My theory then is that the Trump camp wants the debate to be so incredibly unfair to Trump, that your average normie can't deny it, and he can use the experience to further ingratiate himself to voters who feel shit on by the elites.

Not saying it's a good strategy, but I think this is the play.

573 >>407 Ok, someone explain it to me like I'm an idiot. What does the actual fail case for this debate look like? Because when I'm picturing it, I'm having a hard time seeing how it can end up as bad as some people are making it out to be.

rewatch the Chris Wallace debate, which Trump did in fact lose, because he was barely permitted to speak, and Wallace answered Biden's questions for him. Asserting, for example, that Hunter Biden had NOT made millions from overseas influence-farmers.

If you don't want to bother watching that, then you're not honestly asking a question, you're doing stupid rhetorical questions shit and acting dumb.

The election hinges on a very small number of people in the swing States and swing precincts who are very susceptible to assholery and asshats like Tapper/CNN.
The instant agreement by Trump to ALL debate terms set by Biden was / is unnecessary . Trump did not negotiate. He agreed instantly to Biden's first debate proposal. VERY un- Trumpian to agree wholeheartedly with the first proposal to anything.

574 Yeah it's entirely possible that Trump and his people are just overconfident - in both Trump's ability and in Biden's senescence - and it's as simple as that.

I hope not because I agree that Joe will perform well at the debates - and by "well" I mean he will shuffle over the incredibly low bar that everyone will have set for him.

And if Biden's sponsors don't believe he will, then we will see the much anticipated medical emergency shortly before the debates.

575 I love how so many commenters think that having a debate on even ground or a home field advantage will show up if they keep digging into the pile of sh*t that is th MSM/Dem Party ...

so no debates is what they wold end up with ... Tell me again how undecided voters swing to Trump with no debates ???

the extra hour of Trump bashing in the debate will be a tny tiny fraction of the non stop Trump bashing that happens every night on the MSM ...

but how much time does the MSM allow voters to see of Biden mumbling his way thru press conferences/interviews or public appearances ... an hour in a debate will expose voters to t10 times the amount of Biden gaffs as they are exposed too now ...

576 The one thing I would like to see Trump ask for is that the moderators mic's get cut off once a candidate starts to answer a question ...

Posted by: The Dark Lord at May 16, 2024 03:10 PM (DBAaD)

577 Mr. President, don't touch that hot stovetop! It'll burn you!

Trump: "Yah I think I'll rest my balls on that stove, it looks comfy! Where's Maggie Haberman, I need help with my fly."

Posted by: Smoothbrain McShitlib at May 16, 2024 03:26 PM (N/oGZ)

578 94 Debates do not change minds. Everyone who hates Trump will still hate Trump no matter how well he does or doesn't do. Everyone who thinks Biden is a blithering idiot will still think he is a blithering idiot no matter if he wanders off the stage during the debate or if we get dark Brandon.
Biden is IS a blithering idiot who has brought the country to the brink of disaster and no debate is going to change that.

At this point you have the current President (LOL) and the former President. Both are complete known quantities. We have their track records to compare.
