What Is Causing the Great Withering of Humankind?

The human species is electing for voluntary self-extinction, just like the anti-human left demands.

Fertility rates have fallen way below replacement level throughout the entire industrialized world, and this is starting to cause major problems all over the globe. Aging populations are counting on younger generations to take care of them as they get older, but younger generations are not nearly large enough to accomplish that task. Meanwhile, there aren't enough qualified young workers in many fields to replace the expertise of older workers that are now retiring. Sadly, this is just the beginning. As I discuss in my new book entitled "Chaos", if fertility rates continue to drop we could potentially be facing an unprecedented global population collapse in the decades ahead. This has become so evident that even the mainstream media is starting to do stories about this. In fact, an economist that was just interviewed by the Wall Street Journal is warning that "demographic winter is coming"...

Fertility is falling almost everywhere, for women across all levels of income, education and labor-force participation. The falling birthrates come with huge implications for the way people live, how economies grow and the standings of the world's superpowers.

In high-income nations, fertility fell below replacement in the 1970s, and took a leg down during the pandemic. It's dropping in developing countries, too. India surpassed China as the most populous country last year, yet its fertility is now below replacement.

"The demographic winter is coming," said Jesús Fernández-Villaverde, an economist specializing in demographics at the University of Pennsylvania.

Here in the United States, if we want to maintain a stable population we need the fertility rate to be at 2.1 or above.

Unfortunately, our fertility rate dropped to just 1.62 last year, which was an all-time record low...

In the U.S., a short-lived pandemic baby boomlet has reversed. The total fertility rate fell to 1.62 last year, according to provisional government figures, the lowest on record.

Had fertility stayed near 2.1, where it stood in 2007, the U.S. would have welcomed an estimated 10.6 million more babies since, according to Kenneth Johnson, senior demographer at the University of New Hampshire.

Our native-born population has been in decline for quite some time.

The only reason why the U.S. population as a whole has not been shrinking is because of the tremendous amount of immigration that has been happening.

But even though it is not shrinking, the U.S. population has been rapidly getting older, and it is being projected that just six years from now seniors will actually outnumber children for the first time in our entire history...

He recounts various other grim milestones of human decline, and then asks what's causing this.

As I have warned my readers for many years, sperm counts have dropped to catastrophically low levels all over the planet.

If sperm counts continue to decline at the rate they have been, eventually most males will be infertile.

Infertility is also at frightening levels among our young women. I am sure that most of you know couples that desperately want to have children but have been unable to do so.

Meanwhile, our culture has become rabidly anti-child and rabidly anti-family, and as a result there are vast hordes of young people that have decided that they never want to be parents.

...

Humanity has become incredibly selfish and self-centered, and as a result we have stopped caring about the future.

All throughout human history, successful societies have always greatly valued marriage, family and children.

But now we have embraced "new values", and we are rapidly destroying the bright future that we could have had.

Coincidentally, my friend Dave Reaboi suggested the video linked below, which may offer insight into what's going on with the human population.

An ethnologist named John Calhoun sought to study the effects of "utopia" on rodents -- from 1958 to 1962, he experimented on rats, and then from 1968 to 1972 he experimented on rats. These were long experiments, charting the rise and fall of populations over many generations.

His "mouse utopia" (called "universe 25") had space for over three thousand mice, plenty of food for all, plenty of fresh water for all. The habitat was cleaned daily to make sure that the mice lived in clean and relative disease-free conditions. Obviously there were no predators.

The mouse colony increased rapidly in numbers -- at first. After Phase A, the introductory phase, the mice began doubling in population every 55 days in what Calhoun called Phase B.

In Phase C, the population growth slowed drastically, doubling every 315 days. Male mice grew frustrated at constant challenge from other male mice, and many gave up. Many females began living as hermits, nesting in high places and never interacting with other mice.

He also observed what he called "autistic" behavior in the mice. And this was before the word "autistic" was thrown around willy-nilly.

From his paper: He developed a term called "behavioral sink" to describe the fall of the mice.

Many [female rats] were unable to carry the pregnancy to full term or to survive delivery of their litters if they did. An even greater number, after successfully giving birth, fell short in their maternal functions. Among the males the behavior disturbances ranged from sexual deviation to cannibalism and from frenetic overactivity to a pathological withdrawal from which individuals would emerge to eat, drink and move about only when other members of the community were asleep. The social organization of the animals showed equal disruption.

The common source of these disturbances became most dramatically apparent in the populations of our first series of three experiments, in which we observed the development of what we called a behavioral sink. The animals would crowd together in greatest number in one of the four interconnecting pens in which the colony was maintained. As many as 60 of the 80 rats in each experimental population would assemble in one pen during periods of feeding. Individual rats would rarely eat except in the company of other rats. As a result extreme population densities developed in the pen adopted for eating, leaving the others with sparse populations.

In the experiments in which the behavioral sink developed, infant mortality ran as high as 96 percent among the most disoriented groups in the population.

In Phase D, which Calhoun called "the Death Phase," more and more mice began becoming asexual or homosexual. Fertility dropped even among the mice who were still interested in sex. There was much more violence among the mice, including cannibalism and even females killing and eating their own young.

A strange phenomenon was observed in Phase D -- a new caste of male mice called "the beautiful ones" showed no interest in mating with females, and also no interest in fighting other males for the right to mate with females. He called them "the beautiful ones" because their only interest, apart from eating and sleeping, was grooming their own fur.

Some mice began antisocial super-predators -- attacking other mice, biting them and marking them and maiming those mice to make them physically identifiable as "outcasts."

Calhoun said the mice died two deaths -- first of their spirit, then their physical bodies withered.

Eventually all the mice died. He has various theories about why this happened. Maybe it was just a consequence of the stress of overpopulation. The mice's needs were all cared for, but maybe the stress of bumping into so many mice throughout the day changed their behavior.

This was certainly the conclusion seized upon by Malthusians in the 1970s, who began demanding population control to keep the earth from going the way of "universe 25."

Calhoun also speculated that young mice were born into a world in which all the usual social functions (leadership, second-in-command, etc.) were all occupied and, having no place to aspire to in the hierarchy, either checked out of "mouse society" altogether, or else became aggressively antisocial mice.

Another possibility, discussed by the video below, is that external pressures force a pattern of behavior that humans have wound up calling "morality" on a population, and when those pressures are removed, and this pattern of behavior called "morality" is no longer a useful survival skill, a population sinks into degeneracy, conflict, and self-imposed extinction.

Alarming stuff. It's pretty hard not to read that and think, "Oh, we're in Phase C and running fast towards Phase Death."

You know I'm always looking to blame crap on the internet. I'm going to offer my own speculation that while we have not hit (outside of major cities) levels of overpopulation that would case mass insanity, we have created virtual overpopulation via the internet.

In universe 25, the mice had all the food and water they wanted. They even had enough space for over 3000 mice (the population grew to only 2,200 before stagnation and then die-off). So while the mice had enough room to live, they may have been stressed by all the disagreeable interactions they had with so many mice in a day.

Most people, in their real lives, will only have negative interactions with people maybe 10 or 15 times a week. And those will mostly be with bosses and coworkers and family members. Rare will be confrontations with strangers.

But social media gives us the opportunity for 20 or 30 negative interactions with strangers per day.

So maybe humanity, while not in actual overpopulation mode, feels the stress of virtual overpopulation, and reacts like the mice in the "mouse utopia."

I guess that is the most optimistic assessment, because it suggests a relatively easy fix.

The video's pretty depressing so maybe save it for later and watch it Sunday evening. Mondays are always down days anyway.

Thanks to Dave Reaboi for that.

If you want to know more, search "mouse utopia" or "universe 25." There's a lot of stuff about it.

With most real external stresses relieved by relative prosperity and relative security (though a little diminished since the Summer of Love), do people search for new stresses?

Without natural predators to occupy their time, do people go searching for human prey?

35 Calhoun's study was a bit more complicated by the fact that he tried a number of different designs.
The Original one was just an area fenced off in the woods, where the mouse population stayed stable, which is what he used as a standardization metric, and the others were set up with varying ability to access water and food indoors.
The access was restricted in all the "utopias" and had varying bottlenecks that could be controlled by groups of mice. The stress of having to run that gantlet varied, and the results seemed to vary as well.

There were some arguments later that mice do tend to genetically vary, and massively overproduce because in essence mice are prey animals, with the predation on slow and damaged individuals making the fit and agile ones not eaten so much. AFAIK there is no study that looks at possible genetic drift for the mice, though there is the need to explain why the forest enclosure did not have a corresponding crash. There has been a history of boom and busts in Australia where mice have no natural predators, but even there, the Aussies are just happy to have them go away.

46 Too a large extent, this is due to abortion.

According to numbers from the CDC every year from 1973 to 1998, there was 1 reported abortion for every 3 live births.
That's a 25% kill rate, without abortion fertility would be at 2.1 (1.62/3 + 1.62=2.16)
In 2020, the ratio was 1 reported abortion for every 5 live births
That's a 16.7% kill rate - BUT, some areas no longer report abortions but do report births, chemically induced abortions were introduced in 1998, and plan B became available in 2000.
So we don't know the overall kill rate, but it's probably still around 25% between abortion and Plan B.

51 Malthus' main premise was that meddling in population was worse than useless, in taking away the limiting factors without increasing the ability to supply other needs will merely find a new limiting factor which society did not have practice in dealing with.
He also stressed that increasing the purchasing power by reallocating wealth from the rich to the poor would only raise demand without raising supplies, and thus create inflation of prices, that would price the poor out again from the market, as well as the marginally wealthy who were able to make it without the inflation but who would be priced out with the raised prices.

The narcissism of society, the lack of self-sacrifice, the desire for self-perfection and the intolerance of those perceived as unlovely. It becomes a society obsessed with death in its despair. And how does the dystopia end? A disfigured woman with genuine faith and a protagonist who breaks free of his self-centeredness to self-sacrifice.

And yes, it does feel a bit apocalyptic these days and the only cure for despair is the Hope of Nations, Jesus.

74 I may be unscientific but I don’t tend to give much credence to the idea that mouse sociology (if that even exists…. They’re animals so it’s biology not sociology) tells us anything at all about human sociology. I have a spiritual worldview…. Human behavior is all about our relationship (or lack thereof) with God Almighty. As the good Lord says in Luke’s gospel:

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

And of course in another place Jesus said: Who is good but God alone? (rhetorical question)…. Societies thrive when they seek God and they shrivel and die when they don’t….

There was a massive turn around in Russian agriculture in the 19th century that had to do with giving serfs control over their own fields, and reduction and rationalization the power the nobility had over the assignment of fields and labor. The result was that the peasants had a chance to farm for themselves, be successful, have some movement into the middle class economically, and have access to what we call the petite bourgeoisie, in education, and trades. It was the time of the rise of the Kulak when being so meant you had a lot of fat kids who had a future.

Posted by: Kindltot at May 24, 2024 05:59 PM (D7oie)

84 So, who is having more kids now? Ukraine or Russia?

Russia 1.5, Ukraine 1.3. The birth rate among the 20% non-Russian portion of the Russian Federation is probably higher, so among Slavs the birth rates are probably equivalent.

I disagree. Tracking a cycle is completely natural as opposed to dosing with hormones. I suppose you could make a case for condoms but, personally I think sex should be understood as something important with meaning, not undertaken without commitment to the other person involved and open to the possibility of the creation of a new life.

113 " Hindus have the highest peak fertility. About 80% of Hindus in their early 40s have children, with members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints not far behind. However, it’s notable that peak fertility fo--Latter-day Saints -- widely known as Mormons -- is about five years earlier than it is for Hindus. Protestants and Catholics both have a very similar pattern to each other: The peak age for having children is about 40 years old, with about 60% of both traditions being parents at this age.

Those that lag behind are worth considering as well. The group that is the least likely to have children are atheists and agnostics. They hit peak fertility around 42 years old, when about 40% of them have children. It’s noteworthy that, according to this data, potentially half of atheists and agnostics never reproduce. Thus, for these groups to grow, they have to rely on conversion more than retention."

Yes, that's a part of the truth. And to replace the "deplorables" with a more malleable and controllable population.
The Left offers this: We'll lop off your kid's dick or her tits, and kill the babies in the womb. You'll eat bugs, and here's a vaccine that will really hurt a percentage of the population.
So yeah, is there a big PsyOp going on? My two sons are relatively healthy and vigorous. My youngest son at 27 has two kids. But my older son may never marry, which is weird (he's not repulsive in appearance, girls seem to like him).
There are friends of my wife whose kids (adults in their 20's) are really screwed up, and no, I don't think they will ever reproduce.
People are not mice, but in the gross tendencies of large societies, there is a lesson about what people will do and how they react when they feel "crowded out".

148 The thing about the pill is that it doesn’t just stop a woman’s menstrual cycle, it can cause depression and change the type of men they are attracted to.
So, crazier and attracted to more effeminate men does not help fertility rates, nor does the hookup culture it enables.

I don’t advocate eliminating the pill, but it has had a corrosive effect on women apart from stopping surprise pregnancies.

152 So I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (historically known as Mormons) and I know the stereotypes are that we and the Catholics have huge families.

But the family sizes have been dropping, even in our faith. Now that I think about it, my siblings and in-laws are around 4-5 kids each, though I have two. But there are a lot of families who only have a couple of kids. Not as many that have ten or more like, say, 40 years ago. Still, I'd say it's the exception that a married family in the faith only has one kid. Either they have none or two or more. And usually the ones without any are that way due to medical.

The real trick is to get people married at all. Hence the Church is strongly pushing dating and now running "how to date" seminars, classes, and activities for youth and young adults, because dating has practically vanished from society in favor of "Hanging out" which doesn't help you really find a mate. I would recommend such things to other faiths.

Measures announced included waivers on personal income tax for women raising at least four children for the rest of their lives and subsidies for large families to buy larger cars. The ‘action plan’ also extended a loan program to help families with at least two children to buy homes. Every woman under 40 will also be eligible for a preferential loan when she first gets married.
....
“There are fewer and fewer children born in Europe. For the West, the answer (to that challenge) is immigration. For every missing child there should be one coming in and then the numbers will be fine,” Orban said, Reuters reported.

“But we do not need numbers. We need Hungarian children,” he said, announcing the incentives program.

167 As far as evolution goes, I have very little problem with saying our bodies are very similar to monkees, apes, etc. Makes sense: they look a lot like us, so the genetic code between us and them are similar.

The story of the Garden of Eden is essentially the story of two very smart animals (innocents who did not have morality) choosing to become human, with agency and morality and right and wrong. A dolphin or an ape has no conscience or right or wrong. We do. Mankind is more than just our genetic code or physical body, after all.

168 "Falling birth rates are associated with rising standards of living. People don't need children as their "social security system" as much today as they used to."

Correlation is not Causation. Standards of living have been rising for a long time ... when did birth rates start to decline? People may not NEED their own children, but they do need someone's children.

And yes, we live longer (till recently) and better so can better care for ourselves in older age. And tech helps as well ... but ... imo, we need more Americans having their own kids, not importation of a working/slave class that have no allegiance to our liberty/culture.

Yeah, imo that story is very symbolic, more than raw fact. And it is interesting (from the other day) that the 12 Tribes of Israel are the progeny of a man and his two wives and two (?) concubines. Life is .. convoluted.

The times were different ... culture was ... harsh. But we "evolved" into a better place ... with perhaps the founders establishing something unique and awesome. But then, evil never rests.

Gorka has interviewed him a few times on his radio show.

He likes to try and find parallels between different eras -- to study the root causes of civilizational successes and failures; he says the only parallel he's been able to find in history to what is happening to Western civilization today is the "Mouse Utopia" studies (apparently there have been many and findings duplicated) referred to in Ace's post.

Perhaps the point is that there doesn't exist a "natural, open environment" where there is "unlimited food and protection". (So socialism/communism won't work)

But I don't know if we can argue mice/men would leave a crowded environment. Most people who live in cities, stay in cities. Why they do so is an interesting question. From my perspective, do they not know there is something better? It could be they do feel imprisoned.

I yield to NO-ONE when it comes to being an immigration hawk. I'm almost a one issue voter. If a pol is soft on immigration, nothing else can can counterbalance that for me.

Now. In every country I've ever read about, a rising standard of living means fewer births per family. I don't think anyone argues that's just a coincidence.

As living standards go up, infant mortality goes down. People don't have 4-5 children any more in the hope that 2 of them may make it to age 18.

Japan has one of the lowest birth rates in the world. They've worked around that. Not by importing millions of unassimilable Muslims, but by careful long range economic planning.

God created man (adam) in his own image (God is spirit, no man has seen God at any time).

imo, God made formed and created Adam as a complete (3 is "complete") man, body soul and spirit. In the day Adam defied, he surely died. Not his body and soul, but the holy spirit God had given him on the condition of obedience. Adam lived a long time after that, as body and soul man.

Not all men are created "in his image". In the OT men of God had the spirit upon them. Christians can be born again and receive a new birth of holy spirit. Unconditional this time.

The exact forensic audit (by God) of the heart that man must pass is beyond me .. but it is not just a "come down to the altar and say these magic words" kind of thang, imo.
