7 Also, it [VPN attack] doesn't work against Linux or Android devices, not because they are inherently more secure, but because they don't properly follow the network standard that is being abused by the attack.

I first got involved with computers cuz I thought they were the coolest thing on the planet but I stuck around because I thoroughly enjoy shaking my head at all the goofy crap that goes with computer technology. It's a miracle anything works.

I know this drill inside and out. I learned long, long ago to write down every Windows key you come across with your machines, even the OEM ones. My Microsoft documentation is probably as thick as Donald Trump CIA dossier.

178 Is the entire system overwhelmed with illegals?

Have all the controls and admin bumf-wad on doctors driven out the best? The ones I respected are mostly retired early.

Are there secret lists on who gets good care?

I think that was a key component of Obamacare.

Doctors and offices could no longer easily remain independent, so they all got absorbed into the borg of huge national / international corporations. I have no idea of the details but I bet you can't work in hospitals without being part of the that sort of "Union" too.

As another moron mentioned here a couple of days ago, doctors don't have patients any more. They have clients.

He was #1 in his class.
He scored a 35 (out of I think 36) on his college aptitude test (not SAT the other big one which I can't remember).

I wonder if he was Jewish?

The lad needs to think outside the box - Millsaps in Jackson, Mississippi is a private university that welcomes high achievers and offers a challenging curriculum, loosely modeled on the systems used at Oxford and Cambridge. You "sit for your Finals," just like the Brits do, with a committee of professors in your major who pepper you with questions about the range and depth of your knowledge. My wife always joked that it was one of the few schools in the country where the student athletes were actually students first, then athletes. The fellow mentioned would likely flourish there.

182 Wolfus, I'm sure you know this, but try to get a realtor who's on your side. My realtor was incredibly helpful, not just for the purchase, but for many recommendations and referrals for a mortgage broker, contractor, etc. Although I was born & raised in SC, I'd been gone for about 20 years and didn't have much of a network here apart from my brother & SIL and SIL's parents.

First I have to get a realtor who will, yanno, *call me back*. It's like these people don't care if they get a new customer! I didn't say "I'm not ready to buy just yet but want to scope out the market." No, I let them think I am indeed a potential customer. Which I may eventually be. But, no call or email.

Then there's lenders and home insurance people . . . I'm exhausted already.

183 Definitely put your eyes on the property, but mainly the property directly across the street and beside the property.

Because the people selling it aren't going to take photos of the singlewide trailer where the meth dealer lives.

Try to get in touch with a man. Many of the women I see in our area do it to have "a job" and not be one of those lousy stay at home moms, but most couldn't care less if they sell anything because they don't need to.

The men have expectations because they're generally trying to feed their families.

186 The modern real estate agent is swamped by requests from out-of-staters who maybe want to retire "here" or three states away. They request firm appointments to view a house that will be on the market for 12 hours (or has already sold) "some time next month". If they do reply, the buyer promptly ghosts them for six weeks.

You pretty much must give them dates when you will be in town. If you see three houses on the internet, you can use them as examples of houses you want to see. This gives a good realtor something to work with.

A simple request about a single house some vague time in the future---its not going to be answered. If the agent is any good, they are scrambling to find something for that buyer scheduled to come into town tomorrow.

187 When my wife saw this place she called the number that was on the 'for sale' sign while at the property. The person who answered asked when she'd like to view it and she told them she was sitting in the driveway now.

They went right over.

1000x this. I saw a really nice new build, great price, that looked great for me & mom. Next door, definite meth vibe.

The house we ended up with looked good in the pictures but wasn't top of the list. Soon as I saw it IRL, I started wanting to move in (and this persisted even through my home inspection freakout)

191 The two realtors that I worked with were both women.

You're doing research by phone. It's not hard. Call up a local title company or an attorney. Ask what realtor they recommend. If it's listed, any realtor can show it. Use Zillow to research prices. This area has houses that are sold through a local auction house. Call local people and talk to them. Call the library or city hall. It will save you time in the long run.

195 I'll just leave this here:

"While women make up the majority of real estate agents, they are much more likely to work part time than men. Among female real estate agents, 43% work part time. Male part-time real estate agents account for a much lower share, at just 27%."

I saw a great home in coastal North Carolina. Perfect for me. I drove to the location, noticing ditches on each side of the road for storm water. Got out of the car. Bzz in the ear, thousands of them.

Perfect for me in every way. Except the deal-breaker.

197 The technique now seems to find an empty house and just move in. Be sure to print out a lease to present to the cops so they can't throw you out. In the meantime, you can be looking for a more permanent residence.

201 >>>I have three Windows 11 Pro OEM licenses, except that you don't get the key anymore so I have no way to use them.

With past versions of Windows, there were utilities that could pull off the credentials from an existing installation. I used these to transfer OEM installations to other computers.

Don't know if current Windows allows such. I would be surprised if Microsoft did not close this tax loophole.

204 >Huh. The laptop seems to have found its Windows key after all.

I used to work on the systems that preload Windows in the factories, and the way this works is the Windows client license key is burned into the BIOS firmware. The license key plus the laptop serial number uniquely identifies that laptop to the MS license servers. Doinking around with a Windows install may get you an unauthorized notice, but eventually your system will sync up and everything will be good.

Microsoft has been trying to get away from retailing licenses separate from systems for years. They'd prefer Windows to be permanently welded to the hardware. It's a win-win, really, because if you repave the drive and do a reinstall the system will just re-license itself.

205 Also note to Pixy: I was able to verify that the 2.8K screen version of the Asus M1505 (the M1505YA model) does not seem to be available in North America. Canada and the US only seem to have the FHD model, which is identical except for the wifi chip. Any idea how I could obtain a M1505YA? Does Amazon AU ship internationally?

Posted by: Daniel Ream at May 07, 2024 03:20 PM (0Go0g)

206 Nope, they're reusing the M1505YA number for the FHD models in Canada at least. FFS.
