Meanwhile, "protestors" at Portland State University have held the library now for several days, shutting down the campus while the authorities wring their hands and do nothing.
One of the participants: PSU library occupation update: PSU president Ann Cudd (aka Ann Chud by students) had a “negotiations” meeting with a group of students and faculty around 8PM last night. This is what she said: First, that she will be willing to negotiate *after* everyone voluntarily evacuates the library. Second, that she would grant academic amnesty to students on the condition that they all give her their full government names, and that they would thereafter be on probationary status where they are not allowed to disobey the student code of conduct. Third, that she would use her connections to the district attorney to *suggest* any felony charges be brought down to a misdemeanor. She also threatened expulsion for all students involved. She has acted in bad faith, gaslighted, and lied to the students countless times just this week alone, and more importantly, that’s a fucking bullshit attempt at negotiating. So I’m not surprised the students’ response to this was “fuck you.” Posted by: The ARC of History! at May 01, 2024 12:17 PM (uxCna) 37
It's a shabby dress rehearsal for the Democrat National Convention.
Maybe. I don't think so. I think the Dems are watching to see how much longer this goes on and how it plays both to their base and to the mushy middle. We know this shit isn't 'grass roots,' it's purposefully orchestrated and financed, which means the Dems are controlling this (to the extent they can). If this blows over, I think the DNC will take the chance of allowing some "spontaneous" protests at the convention, but ones that are specifically targeted at Trump, the GOP and SCOTUS. If this blows back in their faces, the convention will be locked down tighter than a chastity belt and the MFM will be forbidden to 'report' on anything the PTB do not wish broadcasted. Any protests not approved by the DNC will be pushed miles away by the 'protect muh pension at all costs!" po-po and the media kept far, far away. But what do I know? If the university decides to play, then the students will know it is safe to join in on the fun. I suspect a lot of students are nervous about it at first, because they have a lot invested - time, money, identity, whatever - in being at the school and don't want to risk it if the administration isn't going to be compliant. Once it's been demonstrated that the administration *is* compliant, I suspect a lot more actual students flood in, allowing the outside orgs to step down other than the local bosses. The instigators can then be reassigned to other targets, the burden of continuation having been shifted to actual students. No idea if that's right, but it's my guess. Further to that, why would a Naperville cop take the offer to work overtime at the convention knowing that Kimm Foxx will prosecute them as well?
Cops don't like riot duty - significant chances of getting injured. They do it when it is part of their job, and they usually get overtime when they are doing it. The hypothetical Naperville cop being offered triple overtime to voluntarily do riot duty in Chicago is unlikely to take that, even without Kim Foxx. One, the guy is incredibly petty. He constantly compares himself to people around him and he's very impressed with himself. Another thing was how he deeply researches issues with an intended outcome. He talked about how he researched the LDS Church's position on abortion with the express intent of figuring out if there was any wiggle room in their statements. Unsurprisingly, even though they are very anti-abortion, he found just the wiggle room he wanted and felt justified in his pro-abortion stance. There are people in the caucus who want to sit down and agree on an agenda. They are willing to give up some of their hobby horses in order to find some common ground. Then there's people like MTG, who are the "true" conservatives. They wont negotiate anything. They are also the smallest part of the caucus, but have held up every piece of legislation because they don't get 100%, which hasn't happened on the history of our Congress. Now I get that we take it in the ass every time they pass something, especially when it's left to the senate. But the reason people are leaving is because people like Gaetz and MTG have simply thrown a wrench in until they get 100% of what they want. That's not how it works either. 315 There are people in the caucus who want to sit down and agree on an agenda. Why shouldn't MTG stake out a conservative position? The GOPe always caves to the left, but the left never moves to the right.
Never. And the GOPe is unwilling to move toward what a lot of conservatives would like to see. I see no problem with MTG staking out her ground and not yielding, because yielding to the GOPe never has a good outcome. The Democrats ... are patient with the process to the point it frustrates the opposition and they cave. Republicans? Nah, bro. Get your face on tv because you don't negotiate in conference and tell everybody how bad your leadership is. It's all their fault you don't "stick together". They do t even appreciate the dumbness or irony of what they're doing. It's a joke now.
Posted by: Vengeance at May 01, 2024 01:06 PM (8bQ1C) ++++ They also have the Republicans. There isn't much if any daylight between them. It's all a joke and has been for a long time. But that is beside the point. Leadership is a core problem, and the GOP doesn't have any because leadership is conducive to winning, which is something in which the GOP is not interested. The same people who routinely call out GOP internal opposition for recklessness usually simultaneously argue that the party leader can't whip the caucus into line and can't do anything to stop Bad Thing X this week. This cannot be had both ways. If the party is real, is dysfunctional and has poor leadership - and it isn't, it is, and it does, respectively - then rallying behind the leader for continuing to fail doesn't help in any way. ======= Just curious, have you ever actually worked on the Hill or in a legislature anywhere? If you had, you would realize that for the most part politicians actively hate you unless you slobber your love for them and slip them a packet of bills. The longer a pol is in office, the more they hate the people because the voters actually think that the pol cares about them and treats them as employees. The pols hate the big donors even more after awhile as the big donors always want a quid pro quo and believe that the legislator is always down to play for pay as whores. Then you have the staffers who are hostages to an elected person's ego. The smart ones flip back and forth among offices in order to eventually sell their connections on K Street like a whore. The righteous ones leave after a time and go to ngos, think tanks, or even gasp---back home and leave DC. Most legislators climbed the greasy pole to get there and they aim to make good for them and theirs as a first priority. Even if they intended to do good at first, the system wears them down to either get out or go along to get along. Posted by: whig at May 01, 2024 01:17 PM (peJ7P) 444

This is beyond parody: My dissertation is on fantasies of limitless energy in the transatlantic Romantic imagination from 1760-1860. My goal is to write a prehistory of metabolic rift, Marx's term for the disruption of energy circuits caused by industrialization under capitalism. I am particularly interested in theories of the imagination and poetry as interpreted through a Marxian lens in order to update and propose an alternative to historicist ideological critiques of the Romantic imagination. Labor Participation Rate trended down from the 1980's and accelerated down under Obama. Under Trump that trend reversed and began to rise ... till PlanDemic. It was at 63.3 in Feb 2020.
In Jan 2021 it was at 61.3. March of this year it had recovered to 62.7, though hard (for me) to say how 10 million illegals are counted in those numbers. fred.stlouisfed.org/series/CIVPART Posted by: illiniwek at May 01, 2024 02:07 PM (Cus5s) 462
"I am grateful to live in country where people can raise their voices (and beat Jewish students up until they have to go to the hospital and yell "Kill the Jews?") Really, Lizzie?. How did you feel about January 6 which was far more peaceful?
