Helen or Helena was mother of the first Christian emperor, Constantine. She dreamed that an angel revealed to her the location of the cross on which Christ was crucified and urged her to travel to the Holy Land to find it. She dug up three crosses and, by testing their healing power, was able to identify Christ’s, known as the True Cross.

Saint Helena sits with one foot up on a stone bench in a window alcove, her head resting in her hand, her elbow on the window ledge. As she sleeps, two winged cherubs appear in the sky carrying the True Cross. The deterioration of the pigment smalt has caused the sky to turn from pale blue to yellow-grey.

Veronese’s painting has probably been cropped at the top and bottom. It was clearly designed to be seen from below, and may have been painted as decoration for an organ shutter, perhaps with a now lost opposite shutter showing Constantine.

And the best of those students (undergrads, anyway) are the ones who managed to graduate "on time" after four years. Those guys graduated high school in 2020 and Anthony Fauci stole their high school graduations from them. Thanks to their rulers, they're 0-2 on major celebrations and ceremonies.

Does she have to load it, too? When my cousin was that age, she would do a deliberately bad job in the hopes of not having to do it anymore. Only rigorous enforcement of, "you now have to clean out the dishwasher of chunks of food that should never have been in there, and rewash every dirty dish" broke her of the habit.

165 I'm not a fan of cherubs although these are exceptionally well rendered. But the portrayal of Helena is wonderful with her sleeping pose, the soft colors and folds of her clothing and beautiful skin tones. What really caught my eye was the wood of the cross. It is so solid and realistic, even to a knot in the cross piece. It's such a contrast with the dreamy pose and soft image of Helena.

Sorry, pulp wood mills do stink. But that was most likely my Uncle Elliott. Retired AF, and senior guard at the prison there in Tacoma. He could phart on command and had a grip like a vice. I remember predictions that the Jewish vote was going to crater for Democrats during Obama's presidency because of his open kowtowing to Iran. All that really ended up happening in 2016 was 70% of Jewish voters voted for Hillary and the Republican share of Jewish voters went from 30% for Romney to 24% for Trump. Democrat share increased by 2% from 69% to 71% (I guess there was a lot of third party voting).

This was supposedly because Trump was anti-Semitic, or something.

At this point, I assume that the 70% of the Jewish vote that always votes Democrat are more Democrat than Jewish.

acute sinusitis, on antibiotics now and fever free since Saturday evening. Sleeping a lot, recovering from 99-100 fever for 36 hours.

Urgent care tested negative for covid, flu, and strep. Said it was either a rhinovirus or sinusitis. Since neither Smash nor Junior-ette are unwell, sinusitis wins.

Bp was 136/86, pulse was 82, and oxygen saturation was 99%.

Feeling much better today.
