Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Meet The PetMorons

sashastridr.png

Hi all. Long time lurker, first time poster. The attached picture is of our first set of German Shepherds, Strider and Sasha. They both loved giving kisses as we made our way up the steps. Unfortunately, they have both passed and we have two more, but this is probably the best picture ever of them together.

Mrs. Raygar

How lovely that you would send us this photo of your beautiful dogs. So sorry that they are gone, though memories of them clearly remain.

northstar5.jpg

Hey I have a great pic here that a local place took of our pup Northstar for Cinco de Mayo. They dress the dogs up and have a little feast with a dogarita and pet tacos. Ole!

Thank you

Banana Dream

Ole! Great photo. You must love Northstar. I notice that the sombrero is not on Northstar's head.

Dogaritas and tacos for pets! Interesting idea.

Cheerio nt.jpg

From Jewells:

This is Cheerio a male Shepherd mix. He was taken from the home by Independence Animal Control because of neglect and abuse. He is very shy and skittish and tends to wander off to be alone when he's outside. Despite me and my colleague coaxing him he barely acknowledged us and spent his time outside walking around by himself. Poor sweet baby. We are hoping with time he'll begin to trust again. No health issues fortunately so we really hope he'll get adopted soon.

Cheerio looks like he has potential. Hoping that he finds a home soon.

Ediet.jpeg

I lost Edie, the Best Dog in the World (fight me!) last week. She was 18 and 1/2 years old and spoiled every day of it. Don't know why, but I think it would make me feel better to see her on the Pet Thread.

I post, SO rarely, as Best Thief in Lankhmar

That photo shows how much she was loved. Thanks for sharing your memorial with us. What a sweetheart.

Our Swiss guide dog Gioia enjoys some outdoor play time in lovely spring weather.

Later, Gioia graciously leads the way to bunk space for her friend Odin, who has two hoomans in hospital.

Odin has found his space away from home, but still looks a bit forlorn.

Gioia also shares some toys with Odin, which perks him up.

Hi KT, it's been a year since I sent you cat pics. There was mention previously about cats cuddling up to fireplaces. Here are Bella and Betty outside of their beds enjoying the warmth of the fireplace. Also, Betty in the pantry messing with a plastic bag and Bella posing for a pic after a good brushing.

The cat-and-fireplace theme is popular! They look cozy. Betty and Bella are beautiful cats.

17 Yay Pet Thread. Nice pet thread. Good pet thread. 🐕

Daisy has been getting me up punctually at 6:30 each morning with whines and collar-rattles and copious muzzle nudges and licks on any exposed skin.

This morning I had my skin under the covers and scooted over out of her reach when she came up rattling and whining. Please, I asked her, just give me a couple of extra minutes! You're early. To my surprise and delight, she went and laid down on her bed. So I got to rest those extra minutes... from 6:27 to 6:30.

We had a nice morning walk.

18 Pynchon, our black cat who is supposed to be an indoor cat, dashes out the door whenever he gets a chance and we're not quick enough to close the door. The cat should be an Olympic runner he's so fast. Can anyone recommend a good flea collar? (Yes; I know I can ask this at the vet, but they'll charge me a big fee to tell me) The last collar we had for the cat (Hartz?) made him itch terribly. Thanks.

Hartz products can cause neurological damage. I'm glad kitty was just itchy. If you can't afford frontline plus, try steelcoat flea drops. Both are safer than revolution. But I can't recommend anything else as safe.

I recall that cats can move faster than a snake so are usually successful at killing the snake without being bitten. As do mongooses (not mongeese? LOL). Mine are good at catching the odd flying thing that gets in an open door, flies, moths, etc.

With cats, first thing is purring, then whiskers in your ear, then you get the licking. If you still pretend to sleep they make biscuits on your chest.

Collar on a flea: use a dissecting microscope;
Moth balls: remove balls from male moths (dissecting microscope or precise karate chop on fly-bys); no more moth babies.

We got the Hartz collar almost immediately after he started itching-Poor thing. It's not the expense of Frontline. It was the expense of a collar and a vet visit (We have having to deal with big expenses for a human boy- at the moment- car and new place to live) that was an issue. Thx for letting me know the generic name for Frontline..

33 Oh that white lab looks just like my male dog Corwin. My female was a dark gold so the puppies ranged from that white to gold with a bunch of shades in between. Because they were yellows, all the puppies were various shades of yellow. I always wondered what color they would be if bred with a chocolate.
We .ived on a pond, in fact owned two acres of the pond, but although he would get wet,was never that enthusiastic.

34 Years ago, I was cat sitting for my sister. She had two black Persians. Nice kittuhs! Anyway, I work mids so my sleep schedule is opposite of most. I was off one day and I woke up about mid afternoon and saw two paws, really close to my face. I looked up and Laura started making happy kittuh noises. The other kittuh, Casper, was trying to roll me out of bed by pushing my hip and also, making happy kittuh noises. More like 'our food dish is empty and litter box needs cleaned. Get up staff'.

60 I feel the same way. I know some places will neuter kittens but I think that causes health issues. Fanny was spayed pretty late because she had very light heats and I was worried about how tiny she was. She's come thru surgery a couple of times as yhey removed some death. Troubles is over a year old and got neutered because he's on his third abcess issue.

It's really not going to change behavior. And they will likely have weight issues after. With all those cats, you'll have to neuter and spay earlier than me. I'd try to give them to 6 months.

Posted by: Notsothoreau at May 04, 2024 04:55 PM (yeEu9)

61 Afternoon, pet people! Hope i made it in before the nood. Bella in particular is a beautiful cat. I've never had an all-gray, or as the cat fancy calls the color, "blue."

German shepherds . . . as a boy, a big fan of the Rin Tin Tin Western TV series, I always wanted a shepherd. I also wanted a collie like Lassie. I'm glad now that our apartment lease wouldn't have allowed it, and that my mother was much more a fan of cats.

Yes, in my experience, Hartz Mountain flea products can cause trouble. We put just such a collar on Linda's Angelique, the cream-furred Siberian who found me in a parking lot. She began to shake! We moved fast, cut off the collar, and shampooed her to get the stuff off her. She was okay -- but not long after that she started the thing of climbing in your lap and growling (but not leaving) if you tried to move her. And that lasted the rest of her life. (Though it might simply have been her real, crusty personality, I guess.)

63 My brother and his wife have the exact same dynamic with their rowdy dog, as the husband and wife with the "swimming" labs.

His wife complains that the dog will listen to him but won't listen to her. One time my daughter was there for that exact conversation. My brother replied to his wife, "That is because the dog knows I will beat his a$$."

My daughter responded, "That is terrible, Uncle T. How many times have you beaten the dog?"

He replied, "Never, but the dog knows it might happen if he fails to behave!"

That daughter later grew up to have a dog training business as one of her side hustles.

69 My boyhood cat, Rusty, was not neutered until he was something like seven years old. He'd never sprayed, at least not indoors -- he had the patio to lounge around and play in, and maybe he did it there, but we never smelled anything. Then, at age seven, he started in. We had a hell of a time getting him about eight blocks down the street to the only vet we knew. (We didn't have a cat carrier and had to go with a cardboard box.)

He came through it all fine. Though in those days (1972) they kept the patient overnight. He was still dopey when he came home. He checked out each corner of the ground floor to make sure he was back home, then went to "his" recliner and squeaked. I put him in it and he slept off the rest of the dope, and was fine.

73 Buster reminds me of one of my Goldens, Boomer. The dog was part fish. He would constantly sneak away if we were out in the yard and hit the beach.

The best part was his attempt to sneak away in slow motion as if moving very slowly would make him invisible. I'd say "I can see you" and he would freeze like a statue, wait a few ticks and then continue with the creeping.

Big, happy clown dog who lived to swim.

77 Ben Had,

Buckley just caused me to fall, hit my head on the wall, and smash my knee on his hard chew bone.... This dog is going to be the death of me!

80 I liked the "3 extra minutes" of sleep story.

My wife had a friend that had a massive Bull Mastiff. Whichever spouse got up first let the dog out on work days.

Usually, at least one of them got up early on Saturdays. One Saturday, they both slept in. The dog tried several times by subtle methods to inform them that it was wakey-wakey time.

They still didn't respond. Finally, the dog decided to grab the corner of the mattress in its mouth and drag it to the floor with two adult humans riding on the mattress. They mutually agreed that it now was a good time to get up.

82 Buckley takes Simparica Trio for fleas, ticks, heart worms, and internal parasites. It is very expensive.

Ben likes horses ... because they never race between your feet!

P.S. Hope you survived your injuries. Is Spawn out competing this weekend? I vaguely recall that there were some higher-level competitions coming up?

86 54 How about cats and neutering age?
Also is it different for males vs females?
Posted by: Ciampino - The unkindest

One of my good friends is a vet. She recommends spaying and neutering at 5-6 months. You definitely want to spay a cat before a first heat to eliminate breast cancer, which is aggressive in female kitties. For males, it stops spraying before it starts, because once it starts it may not stop, even after neutering. It also stops the vocalizations of intact males that can be not fun, esp if they smell a cat that is in heat.

She feels the same for dogs, except Dobermans. They should have a first heat because they get weird bladder issues. This is the only breed she recommends waiting on.

No, I had him by the collar and he didn't want to go where I wanted him to... He's getting strong. I might be dropping him off at your place for doggie boot camp/training... 😎😂

88 >>What a great story. He sounded absolutely loveable and entertaining.

He was a very good boy. His goal in life was to be happy and make everyone around him happy and he mostly succeeded.

We have an elderly dog who is blind and hard of hearing. She follows me around and is constantly under foot. I am very careful both to avoid injuring her and to protect myself.

95 The Golden I have now won't go near a pool, but I have to keep him on a 25' leash when we go to the beach because he loves the ocean. It wouldn't be bad except that he goes out way too far and I'm always worried he'll get caught in a rip tide. The long leash allows him to crash around in the waves and keeps me from having a nervous breakdown.
